Weekend Box Office: “Alice,” “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “Ghost Writer”

By Debbie Schlussel

Nothing new that I highly recommend at the box office, this weekend. Here are my reviews:

*  “Alice in Wonderland“: My full review is here.  Director Tim Burton and screenwriter Linda Woolvertoon ruined Lewis Caroll’s charming “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and turned it into a feminist, anti-male, anti-marriage propaganda flick.  So sad.  Again, read my complete review.

See the Pattern?: Three Muslims Held in Anti-Gay Shooting

By Debbie Schlussel

A couple of years ago, I told you about Muslims who brutally beat a gay Georgetown University medical student, and they made it clear that it was because he was gay.

No, There is No Purple Jihad; Just Jihad Against Purple

Some people whined that the two Muslims were just random gay-bashers and that there was no pattern.  Well, I guess the executions of gays all over the Islamic world, under sharia (Islamic law), isn’t a pattern.  Nor is this latest incident, in which three Muslims shot BB guns at a man they thought was gay.  And authorities believe that these Muslims have been targeting gays in a series of similar attacks.  Religion of Peace, baby:

Three cousins from Hayward have been charged in San Francisco with a hate crime and assault for allegedly firing a BB rifle at the face of a man they believed was gay, an attack the men videotaped, authorities said Wednesday.

Mohammad Habibzada, Shafiq Hashemi and Sayed Bassam, all 24, are scheduled to be arraigned today in San Francisco Superior Court. They are free on $50,000 bond apiece.

Student Visa Fraud Ring: How Many From Syria, Turkey Disappeared in US?

By Debbie Schlussel

Two more Americans sold out their country–and thankfully got caught by sharp ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents, who investigated and arrested them. It’s called “Operation Class Dismissed,” ICE’s largest bust of student visa fraud ever. Good job, ICE agents.

icebadge.jpgfloridalanguage

Lydia Menocal and Ofelia Macia ran the Miami-based Florida Language Institute, which was mostly a phony school, designed to make money by providing foreigners phony student visas and making $2.4 million from the scam. They did this for 600 foreign national aliens, only five percent of whom were actually legitimate students. The rest never showed up to the school and were only “enrolled” so they could enter and stay in the U.S. to do who knows what.  Read the indictment. And note the blonde chick stock photo, above, the phony school used on its website. Whatta crock. How many blonde chicks are named Mohammed and Manuel?

“Gloria Steinem in Wonderland”: Hollywood Turns Alice Into Feminist Manifesto, Anti-Male Action Flick

By Debbie Schlussel

If you’re planning to see Disney’s new version of “Alice in Wonderland,” know that it really isn’t Alice in Wonderland at all. It’s Gloria (Steinem) and Betty (Friedan) and Susan (Sarandon) in a high tech, souped up, feminist wonderland.  It’s like NOW (the National Organization for Women) invaded a kids’ flick and turned it into a horror movie.  There’s nothing wondrous or wonderful about it. It’s dumbed down baloney.

aliceinwonderlandgloriasteinem

Gloria Steinem’s Fantasy, Not Lewis Caroll’s Charming Classic

The new “Alice” is about the horrors of marriage and how, even back in the 1800s a young girl knows more about business and trading in far off lands than a wealthy English tycoon.  The movie, which debuts in theaters tonight, bears very little resemblance to the classic Lewis Carroll fairy tale, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”  While the 3-D effects were okay and some of the movie was cute, the destruction of Carroll’s charming tale is a huge disappointment.  And it simply wasn’t “Alice in Wonderland.”  It was the feminist manifesto fraudulently and deceptively dressed up in that name.

Absurd to the Nth: Even Honest Abe is Now in the Vampire Biz?

By Debbie Schlussel

My late maternal grandmother, Adela, a Holocaust survivor, used to say in her frequent Yiddish/English mix, “Ehrein the business, Ehrein the business.” It’s a saying, which translates into, “He’s in the business, [and] he’s in the business.” But it really means that everyone’s in the same racket. My dad and I used to jokingly use this saying and laugh about it. But, sadly, the joke is now on the American consumer because . . . everybody’s in the same racket.  There are no new ideas.

abelincolnvampirehunterhonestabevampire

Please, Make It Stop.

Hollywood just announced a movie remake of the “Gilligan’s Island” TV show (which, itself, had at least two TV movies with the original cast).  And, as you know, everything coming out of Tinseltown is all remakes and sequels by the gazillions.  And then there are the vampires.  Enough, already.  Ditto for the doomsday/apocalypse/zombie deals.  Please, come up with something new.

And this lack of creativity–this epidemic of rip-offs and remakes–has silently spread through all other forms of entertainment.  Sucking on the teat of the “Twilight” series hot vampire dynamic and the “historical fiction” novel baloney, everyone’s now either in the vampire biz or they’re walking through life with their best buddies Jesse James and Winston Churchill. It’s annoying.

And now, apparently, even Abraham Lincoln was a . . . vampire hunter? HUH?! It’s like a bad SNL skit. Oh, and the book, “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”–as if the whole thing isn’t absurd enough–features a storyline involving Edgar Allan Poe researching a lesbian vampire story. This gushing Vanity Fair review is enough to make you cringe. Sadly, this is not a joke:

More Gitmo Catch & Release Regurge: Gitmo Dude Now Taliban #2

By Debbie Schlussel

Remind me again why we’re spending gazillions for our soldiers to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan . . . while we release Guantanamo Bay Islamic terrorists to restock the Taliban pond.

gitmoterrorist.jpg

We Had Him Like This; Now He’s Mass-Murdering Our Soldiers

New slogan:  We’re fighting them over there . . . so we can fight them over there after we release them from Gitmo?

You’d think that with the repeated return of Guantanamo Bay Islamic terrorists (you know the ones everyone keeps telling us aren’t terrorists) to positions of leadership in Islamic terrorist movements and masterminding more attacks on Americans and other innocent civilians, we’d finally get the hint.  But, no, there are more important things to worry about . . . like art therapy courses for the future planners of the Flight 253 Undiebomb.

And now, a freed Gitmo detainee is heir apparent to the Afghan Taliban’s second in command position.  Abdul Qayyum is leading the battles against U.S. troops in Marjah, Afghanistan and has risen through the ranks in his 14 months back on the battlefield after his Gitmo R&R.  His assistant in planning the attacks on U.S. and other troops is another former Gitmo guest, Abdul Rauf.  And we’re returning them back to the battlefield because . . .?  Blame both the Bush and Obama administrations and the U.S. Supreme Court for punting on this issue, as this week, the Court declined to hear a case on the Gitmo Uighurs, and the Obama administration found them a home in Sweden (a home for those who weren’t already enjoying ice cream and swimming in their new Caribbean home).

A man freed from Guantanamo more than two years ago after he claimed he only wanted to go home and help his family is now a senior commander running Taliban resistance to the U.S.-led offensive in southern Afghanistan, two senior Afghan intelligence officials say.

Skip Peet’s Coffee, Go to Starbucks: Which Stores Support Gun Control?

By Debbie Schlussel

There’s a new battlefield in the war to defend the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.  And it’s at the stores in which you shop.

nogunsallowed

calipizzakitchpeetscoffee

Gun control advocates from the Brady Campaign are targeting stores and businesses that abide by state open carry laws.  They’re waging war against stores that allow patrons to carry their weapons in states in which the law allows that.  And they’re giving businesses “no weapons” signs to post.

But, thankfully, most large, national businesses are smarter than that.  And it’s not about ideology.  It’s about the bottom line.  If you don’t allow people to carry guns who are licensed or otherwise legally allowed to do so under the law, you’re angering a lot of potential and longtime customers.  And, especially in this economy, most businesses can’t afford to be left-wing Big Brother.  Unfortunately, “most businesses” don’t include Peet’s Coffee and Tea and California Pizza Kitchen, which won’t allow guns in their stores.  These businesses DO respect the Second Amendment and allow guns in states where its legal:  Starbucks, Wal-Mart,  Home Depot, Best Buy, and Barnes & Noble.

World Too Busy Attacking Israel to Heed HAMAS’ Latest Admission on Assassinated Mabhouh

By Debbie Schlussel

While the world continues its hilarious Keystone Kop-style “investigation” of the assassination of key HAMAS official Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh–and continues its usual attacks on Israel, HAMAS made an interesting admission.

They Are Heroes–Even More Than We Knew . . .

abuabedhitsquad

Alhamdillullah [Praise allah]: The Complete “Abu Abed” Hit Team

mahmoudalmabhouh

Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh, Now with the 72 Re-Virginized, Desecrated Israeli Bodies

It’s not like we didn’t know that Mabhouh a/k/a “Abu Abed” was the key weapons smuggler in the Iran-to-Gaza HAMAS weapons network.  But HAMAS now admits it and reveals yet more about his savagery.  Yet, despite this confirmation that Mabhouh’s erasure from this world was a  huge net plus, the world continues its stupid look at credit card records for false identities, which will prove nothing.  It’s comical, really.

Also comical, but not surprising in the least, is that I only saw the HAMAS revelation in a teeny-tiny, one-sentence blurb I might normally have missed, in today’s Wall Street Journal.  Didn’t see the news on any nightly newscasts or in any other major newspapers.  And even the tiny hint in the Journal didn’t include the story about how this animal celebrated by the corpse of Israeli soldiers.  Like I said, Israel did the world a favor eliminating this barbarian.

The right-hand man of a Hamas leader assassinated in Dubai has confirmed Israeli claims that his boss supplied weapons to Palestinian militants.

About “The Hurt Locker”: Yes, It’s a True Story; No, It’s Not “Left-Wing”

By Debbie Schlussel

As those who’ve been readers since last summer know, I really liked the Academy Award-nominated film, “The Hurt Locker.”  I put in in my top five films for 2009, and I voted for it in several categories as a member of the Detroit Film Critics Society.  You can read my full review here.

jeffreysarverhttp://2.bp.blogspot.com/_wkMSc5DjQ18/SLUGWPv2vSI/AAAAAAAAEzc/DCAlmpREMMQ/s320/The+Hurt+Locker_poster.jpg

In summary, the movie is fantastic in that it shows us not only how tough it is to serve our country, but the risks our soldiers take every single day so that we don’t have to–how they constantly put their lives on the line (and their families, too).  And it shows how good our soldiers are to the Iraqis and their kids, who really don’t give a damn in return.  That’s important, as is the fact that our presence in these places–where we refuse to fight a tough war, and, instead, are making nice with a hostile enemy and constantly defusing bombs–is futile.  Unless we are willing to kill people and destroy things, we lost in the first place (and in the case of Iraq, we handed it over to Iranian-backed leaders who will ultimately make it a satellite state of the Ayatollahs, as it basically is now). Some liberals, including director Katharine Bigelow, and some conservatives say it’s an anti-war movie. But that’s in the eye of the beholder. In my view, the movie is extremely patriotic.

But now that the movie is up for an award on Sunday’s Oscar telecast (where I think it may win Best Picture or will, at least, win Best Director), it’s come under fire from some mainstream media reporters who found a few soldiers willing to nitpick the film to death over tiny minutiae that are completely irrelevant (like uniforms that aren’t accurate). And I’m getting hate-mail from ignoramuses who think they are conservative, telling me I’m somehow a liberal Democrat because I liked the movie.  These are people who probably didn’t even see it, people who don’t read this site, or they’d have a clue.  Sadly, they don’t.  They’re citing a ridiculous article in the liberal Washington Post–no fan of the America’s Armed Forces–to call me out for liking the movie.  HUH?!  Next, they’ll be citing the Soros Nazi-funded Media Matters and MoveOn.org. It’s as ridiculous as the Sarah Palin litmus test posed by far too many airhead faux-conservatives who mindlessly put personalities above all principles.

UPDATED: Massa Says Cancer Recurrence; Uh-Oh: Are We Headed for . . .

By Debbie Schlussel

**** UPDATE: Roll Call reports that liberal Dem Congressman Eric Massa is not seeking re-election due to a recurrence of cancer. If that’s the case, my heart goes out to the guy, and I hope he beats it. That contrasts with the Politico claims of sexual harassment against a male staffer. If that’s not true, it’s a shame that the site would report it, especially as someone is fighting cancer. More reasons why you never know what to believe in the mainstream media . . . as in not most of it. END UPDATE ****

. . . Yet another “I am a Gay American” resignation speech?  Sure looks like it.  The story–if it’s true–of liberal Democrat Congressman Eric Massa is yet more evidence that times have not “changed,” and that being gay can still be used to blackmail people, including and especially those in the military.

ericmassa

Dem Congressman Eric Massa Resigning After Just One Term

Think real hard about this story, and then re-evaluate whether the U.S. Armed Forces should really drop its “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Policy.” (And that’s in addition to the unit cohesion probs when straight soldiers are forced to sleep in close quarters with gay ones . . . or women, as the Obama administration is now going to do with submarines.)

Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) will not seek reelection after only one term in office.

According to several House aides – on both sides of the aisle – the House ethics committee has been informed of allegations that Massa, who is married with two children, sexually harassed a male staffer.
