About Roman Polanski’s Defenders & NBC News

By Debbie Schlussel

I really didn’t want to post about Roman Polanski (other than many readers have asked me to) because I have little to add to the obvious facts:  he drugged a thirteen-year-old girl (three decades his junior), and he had sex with her.

romanpolanski

Rapist / Child Molester

It’s pretty simple:  that’s rape.  That’s not rocket science or brain surgery. Although, to some of Polanski’s many clueless defenders it might be rocket surgery.

The indignance over America’s desire to bring him to justice is ridiculous.  It really makes no difference how long ago it happened or whether or not the victim forgives him.  You could say that about a gazillion domestic violence cases and teacher-teen student sex cases.  And I never hear anyone come  up with such excuses in those cases (except their defense attorneys who are rarely successful).  It makes no difference that Polanski made the terrific film, “The Pianist.”  I love that movie, but he’s a criminal, a rapist, and a child molester.  And he must pay. Also irrelevant: that his pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by followers of Charles Manson. That’s tragic. But it doesn’t allow him a free pass on raping a young girl.

I didn’t have time to post this before the Jewish Holiday of Yom Kippur, but just before the holiday started, I watched this NBC News report, below, and found it interesting that Newsweek film critic David Ansen defended Polanski and referred to his arrest as a “vendetta.”  Sorry, but it ain’t a vendetta.  It’s justice.  I couldn’t determine if Ansen has kids (I suspect for the obvious reasons that he does not). But if he had a son or daughter who was drugged and raped when he/she was thirteen by a 40-something-year-old man, I doubt he’d be calling Polanski’s arrest after decades of being a fugitive, a “vendetta.”

The same goes for Debra Winger and Whoopi Goldberg, both of whom also defended Polanski. Well, maybe Whoopi would defend the rape of her daughter or granddaughter. You never know with that nutjob, a very sexually loose former straight person. Also, disgusting was that not once did the NBC report mention that the victim was given alcohol and drugged.  That’s material here to how heinous the crime was, not just the woman’s age.

That scumbag should rot in US prisons and be left to the same fate as the other molesters inside.

DS_ROCKS! on September 29, 2009 at 6:00 pm

Will Nancy Grace and Jane Velez-Mitchell say justice was done or will they do a Michael Jackson and forget about any old child molestation accounts? They jumped the shark on MJ. Polanski and MJ were artists who molested children.

Whoopi is utter filth. As for Whoopi, I don’t know if you ever heard the comparison sports announcer, Chris Myers, made of Whoopi Goldberg and the Detroit Lions. If you haven’t heard it, it is hilarious.

Being famous shouldn’t spare one from justice. The truth is Debbie – is that celebrities are not held accountable for the crimes they commit because people can’t believe famous people could do an evil deed.

As if. I guarantee every one that if Polanski wasn’t famous, he’d be serving a good many years behind bars right now – today. That said, if he is ever extradited here, I’m not holding my breath waiting for him to receive long overdue justice.

NormanF on September 29, 2009 at 6:40 pm

you are right on, Debbie.

BB on September 29, 2009 at 6:46 pm

If that was my daughter, I wouldn’t be giving the creep the time of day. His past accomplishments (and family tragedy) are irrelevant. They don’t excuse the fact he committed a crime and raped a young girl. Its time for Polanski to face the music.

NormanF on September 29, 2009 at 6:51 pm

Let him rot in jail. They should treat him like any other rapist.

johndorda on September 29, 2009 at 7:08 pm

I don’t know what bothers me more. The fact that this idiot drugged and raped a 13 year old girl, or that the morally bankrupt denizens of Hollywood are circling the wagons to defend him.

White Rook on September 29, 2009 at 7:13 pm

I guess that given the trashy movies Hollywood puts out it represents self-interest or self-preservation for these Hollywood “luminaries” to support him.

Little Al on September 29, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Those who defend Polanski seem to resonate much louder than their numbers and authority.

Mmm Mmm Mmm

Debra Winger? Isn’t she in: Officer and What Have You Done Lately?

Sam Adams on September 29, 2009 at 7:44 pm

I read a book about Polanski many years ago that grossed me out. I believe he had an affair with Nastassia Kinski (who was very beautiful) when she was just a teenager. He is a sick man. There was stuff in that book about degrading women that enfuriated me. I also saw an interview with the late Sharon Tate that left me very down (she was asked about “appearing nude in films” and gave the usual vapid response about “it would have to be in good taste” or something like that. And then she was murdered). What I don’t understand is why the State of California is freeing 40,000 convicts. Actually I do know why: they are broke. I do not defend this man but if the State is so broke, why are they pursuing this?

JulieJ. on September 29, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Anyone who would defend and downplay the rape of a child quite possibly has similar inclinations themselves, in my opinion.

tempus fugit on September 29, 2009 at 8:14 pm

JulieJ, its not about the money. I think a felony crime is the only crime that doesn’t have a statute of limitations. Polanski fled the US to avoid a prison sentence. He may be an accomplished director and filmmaker but he’s also a criminal, a rapist and a pedophile. In Hollywood, they only choose to see the side of him they want and they avert their eyes to the rest. As I said, being famous ought to confer no immunity from the reach of the law.

NormanF on September 29, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Someone should just outright blow the bastard’s brains out with a shotgun at point blank range. Justice served.

Steve Harkonnen on September 29, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Apparently the reason why Polanski jumped was because he thought the judge was going to reject the plea deal and give him a harsh sentence. Polanski should just go with the authorities willingly and throw himself at the mercy of the court.

Norman Blizter on September 29, 2009 at 10:08 pm

And one more thing:

I liked The Pianist, but I thought Gangs of New York was better and should have won the Oscars for best movie, director and actor that year.

Norman Blizter on September 29, 2009 at 10:12 pm

It is an example of a wealthy celebrity getting treatment that no mere mortal could expect. It is amazing that the left rages against wealthy people being treated differently in court for the crimes that they commit, until one of their own finds themselves in this situation. Roman Polanski admitted to the offense, pled down the crime to something almost minor, and then refused to accept even a nominal sentence. In addition, he paid off the victim monetarily in an undisclosed settlement(preemtive witness tampering to prevent a retrial), which was even a further admission of guilt. Roman Polanski is an arrogant child molester who has laughed at us for years from his gilded exile.

Sorrow01 on September 29, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Polanski’s defenders are part of the reason why I read movie reviews but don’t go to movies.

P. Aaron on September 29, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Get this. Woody Allen is calling for his release……..WOODY ALLEN! LOLOLOLOLOLOL The husband of his once common law daughter…….

hermster on September 29, 2009 at 11:49 pm

The only thing I heard was that the mother was complicit in this as well. She is now dead and that she made her a little older then she was. It still is very sick though.

adam on September 30, 2009 at 12:13 am

Since Whoopi Goldberg tried years ago to coerce her daughter into having an abortion, it doesn’t surprise me that she said what she did. And the networks continue to report this as if the case had not been prosecuted; he plead guilty and was slated to go to federal prison in California, the same prison where Chuck Colson had been initially incarcerated. Also, they continue to refer to it as statutory rape, since the girl was underage. That would refer to consensual sex with a minor. He drugged and sodomized the girl. They continue to cite that the victim does not want to see this go any further; not uncommon for a rape victim to want to put this in the past, but it still doesn’t exonerate Polanski. His own statements about others wanting or thinking about having sex with girls is just self-justification and projection. Those idiots in Hollywood insist that after this long period of time, he must be rehabilitated. The man is unrepentant and absolutely not remorseful at all. Not to get preachy, but it says in the NT that it would be better for a man never to be born than to hurt a child; that he would be better off tying a millstone around his neck and casting himself into the sea. I would recommend that anyone who feels strongly enough about this should look at the petition signed by all the Hollywood folks, and boycott their movies, plays, TV shows and books, since they don’t deserve anyone’s patronage after defending someone who raped a child…RAPED, not “underage” sex. She didn’t have sexual relations with him; he RAPED her. Even if you don’t watch that idiotic excuse for entertainment, you should call ABC and tell them how offended you are that one of their celebrities is defending a RAPIST. Sorry for the capitals, but it’s like written shouting, since they seem to be deaf. Thanks always Debbie for a great column and a righteous stand against evil! g’mar chatimah tovah. Hope I got that right.

Doug Belcastro on September 30, 2009 at 4:57 am

Ooooooooowwwwww, he faces MONTHS in jail.

Tell you what. Since Poland just recently voted to chemically castrate first-time sex offenders, why not let them do it to Polanski? Oh, that’s right; their government is one of the groups OUTRAGED over this.

Never mind…

Dave M on September 30, 2009 at 6:48 am

I am not defending Polanski. I think he is a very sick person. However, I want to know how the state of California suddenly found money for this case while releasing 40,000 dangerous criminals into the public.

JulieJ on September 30, 2009 at 9:14 am

The influx of Marxism and Islam to america has reduced her common sense. Both support pedophilia and every thing anti Bible. The religion of islam is Arab Imperialism posing as a religion and Marxism is anti Christianity as is Islam. The so-called members of christendom treated Jews so badly in Europe that Karl Marx a Jews became a Luthern to live. This was sad, so the religion of Marxism was born. A god-less society from the bible’s view is now dead and the new god of Islam and Marxism is alive and well. Jews and Christians of goodwill need to wake up and read their books and fight back and realize how they have both been used.

JulieJ on September 30, 2009 at 9:14 am]

By releasing 40,000 dangerous criminials? It’s their job, they’re already paid to do this. And it’s not like they need another trial, he already plead guilty to the crime over 30 years ago.

Norman Blizter on September 30, 2009 at 10:53 am

This is EARLY RELEASE – REPEAT – EARLY RELEASE!

JulieJ on September 30, 2009 at 12:10 pm

Why would Hollywood be so fervant in defending Polanski? Simple: Hollywood is overwhelmingly Leftist/Libertine( I’m assuming Polanski is also ), therefore,Leftists who have sex with underaged girls are “good”( No matter how many hundreds/thousands of times they do it ),whereas if an artist on the Right does the same thing, even if it were only once,he is “evil”( Because it’s “hypocritical” for such people to do such things, even once, even if it were a moment of weakness )the same defenders of Polanski would be screaming for him to never be allowed to make another film as long as he lives.

Phineas on September 30, 2009 at 12:02 pm

There is something else here that no one is talking about. It is not as serious as the rape of a child (not even in the same universe) but no one is talking about it and it is very serious.

In addition to punishing this maggot for drugging a child and raping her, how about punishing him for jumping bail and remaining a fugitive for all these years?

I_AM_ME on September 30, 2009 at 12:09 pm

If you look at Mr. Polanski’s biography, it shows that he remarried in 1989. He was 56 at the time. His new wife was 23. I know that 23 is a lot better than 13, but that’s still a little creepy.

Bill on September 30, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Another reason to boycott Woody Allen movies (besides his self-hatred and hatred of Jews) is his defense of Polanski. I can imagine what Mia Farrow must think.

JulieJ on September 30, 2009 at 12:35 pm

[JulieJ-Another reason to boycott Woody Allen movies (besides his self-hatred and hatred of Jews) is his defense of Polanski.]

Besides the fact this his movies show he hates being Jewish, I believe Woody Allen should be boycotted because he sleeps with his daughter.

    I_AM_ME on September 30, 2009 at 1:00 pm

“Do not have Christians or Jews as friends”. That is in the Koran. And thanks for elevating the conversation.

JulieJ on September 30, 2009 at 12:44 pm

Whoppi says it wasn’t “rape rape” therefore plain rape is OK with her.

What an ass.

jlp4221 on September 30, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Hollywood should file for Chapter 11 protection, if you can file for moral bankruptcy.

Richard on September 30, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Polanski used champagne and qualudes, and then raped and sodomized a thirteen-year-old.

Who in their right mind could defend him? You have no moral compass if you do defend him.

He was convicted (plea bargain?) and fled. He needs to serve his time, plus lots of counseling for his behavior. He needs to learn from his mistake. Let’s hope he assumes room temperature in the near future so our daughters will be safe.

goldenmike4393 on September 30, 2009 at 12:58 pm

The Chris Meyers quote on Whoopi is beautiful! It appears, sadly, that almost 40% of respondents would have Meyers fired for the comment. And Whoopi has a child? Somebody actually hit that? That’s beyond disgusting.

Spiffo on September 30, 2009 at 1:04 pm

Salaam Let me start by saying this. I am a 21 year old MUSLIM, married mother of three girls (2 year old twins, and a 1 year old) I am also disgusted by this man and his actions and think he deserves the strictest of punishments. Also, the Qu’ran is not anti Bible. Its pro Peace!

Essence on September 30, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Polanski’s evil perverted carcass should be kicked to the curb, then thrown under the bus, then deposited under the jail and the key to said under-jail resting place be chunked into the deepest part of the deepest sea.

That said, I do believe that the PARENTS of the then-13-year-old girl who was posing nude for a then-44-year-old amoral film director who was feeding her champagne and quaaludes and then having his wicked way with her, should also be brought to trial. Parents are supposed to PROTECT their children from this kind of danger! It is child abuse if they don’t. This girl was raped by more than one person.

And yes, Whoopi, I mean RAPED RAPED. You ignoramus.

WAKE UP, PARENTS. As much as is in your power, it is your responsibility to know where your children are, who they’re with, and what they’re doing. Always.

JennyPennifer on September 30, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Anyone who has childern or half a brain should know this guy should be locked up with Bubba and let him Butt F*** him everyday for the rest of his life. Put a nice wig on him and he has the frame of a little woman! I am supprised he could even get his little d*** out of his pants!

Doug on September 30, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Someone should carve the word PEDO into that f*ckers forehead! >:(

Eric on September 30, 2009 at 3:57 pm

I am boycotting the Today show and its sponsors over their defensive treatment of that pedophile Polanski. I read the transcript of the trial and had to go to the bathroom since I began heaving, imagining if one of my daughters had had something like that happen. I think we have got to send a message to Hollywood. This is a defining moment I think in the rotting decay they have created and continue to impose on our society. This man was referred to by the LA Times back then as “Hollywood pedophile” implying that he had done this before. And we know he had a sexual relationship with Natasha Kinski at age 15 after he left the US. I bet there are plenty more and I would bet he used drugs and alcohol before to accomplish this. The poor woman now probably doesn’t want to dredge all this painful stuff up and be the subject of the press. I hope this will not be swept under the carpet as a minor matter. To me this is a defining moment about the complete breakdown of any morals in our entertainment industry and noncable networks. What has our country come to?

cindy anderson on September 30, 2009 at 11:50 pm

I’ve read (can’t remember where, sorry) that he had lawyers trying to make the guilty plea go away, arguing that the prosecution wasn’t trying to extradite him. This reminded the DA’s office that the case existed and they decided to go after him.

From a political standpoint, I think going after him is great for the DA. While Hollywood will be angry, the rest of the voters will like the idea of not letting millionaire molesters get away with this.

The case reminds me of an essay Orwell wrote about Salvador Dali. Dali was a great artist but was disgustingly antisocial and physically violent towards women. He also claimed in his autobiography to have been a necrophiliac in the past. http://www.george-orwell.org/Benefit_of_Clergy:_Some_Notes_on_Salvador_Dali/0.html

Orwell’s point was that being a talented artist didn’t absolve the artist of sins or crimes. It used to be the tradition that priests weren’t subject to the normal court system but instead were judged by an ecclesiastical court. The self-selected elite seem to feel that this concept should apply to them. If you are a liberal, you can leave women to drown in cars while you establish an alibi and sleep it off. You can lie about climate data and state the science is settled. You can go on television and say a tax isn’t a tax. You can also, it seems, rape a child for several hours and flee the country.

Roman Polanski is a great filmmaker. His work deserves the acclaim it’s received. Roman Polanski raped a child. No work of art, no scientific discovery, no military or political success makes that okay. He left the country, which stopped the clock on the statute of limitations. He should suffer the legal consequences of raping a child and fleeing prosecution. I hope that after he has served his time he makes more movies.

Perhaps the essence of the culture war and the political struggle is that one side feels there are absolutes and the other side doesn’t.

Orwellian on October 1, 2009 at 12:19 am

you are polarizing the issue. he was guilty, but the punishment was not equivalent to the standard sentence of the time. considering the trauma the man had dealt with during the era, you would consider that the judge would have empathy. it was obvious that it was anti-semitism. he wasn’t getting a fair trial. …I’ve read a bit about the trial and I don’t condemn underage sex, but considering our government does regular business with countries that have organized marriage with 12 year olds in their legal system… it seems a bit arbitrary to throw the book till we cut off all ties to Saudi Arabia

Noah David Simon on October 1, 2009 at 8:16 am

Debbie, Thanks for posting some condemnation of this common felon. YOU GO, GIRL — keep takin’ on the evil monsters of this world, no matter who or what they are! I can’t understand why the French want somebody like this in their country. I’m sure he has created new victim populations everywhere he has gone since fleeing American justice, as sex crimes have the very highest recidivism rates of any class of offenses. Of course he will claim that he was forced to flee by a corrupt judge who went back on his word regarding the plea agreement. Fine. We have a system in place to address such alledged abuses. It is called the court of appeals, not Air France!

Greg Solomon on October 2, 2009 at 1:37 pm

I’m surprised that they allow you to talk like that in the jail that the US has become. Most of the westerners which I know seem to have locks on their mouths.
