Being famous shouldn’t spare one from justice. The truth is Debbie – is that celebrities are not held accountable for the crimes they commit because people can’t believe famous people could do an evil deed.

As if. I guarantee every one that if Polanski wasn’t famous, he’d be serving a good many years behind bars right now – today. That said, if he is ever extradited here, I’m not holding my breath waiting for him to receive long overdue justice.

I read a book about Polanski many years ago that grossed me out. I believe he had an affair with Nastassia Kinski (who was very beautiful) when she was just a teenager. He is a sick man. There was stuff in that book about degrading women that enfuriated me. I also saw an interview with the late Sharon Tate that left me very down (she was asked about “appearing nude in films” and gave the usual vapid response about “it would have to be in good taste” or something like that. And then she was murdered). What I don’t understand is why the State of California is freeing 40,000 convicts. Actually I do know why: they are broke. I do not defend this man but if the State is so broke, why are they pursuing this?

JulieJ, its not about the money. I think a felony crime is the only crime that doesn’t have a statute of limitations. Polanski fled the US to avoid a prison sentence. He may be an accomplished director and filmmaker but he’s also a criminal, a rapist and a pedophile. In Hollywood, they only choose to see the side of him they want and they avert their eyes to the rest. As I said, being famous ought to confer no immunity from the reach of the law.

Apparently the reason why Polanski jumped was because he thought the judge was going to reject the plea deal and give him a harsh sentence. Polanski should just go with the authorities willingly and throw himself at the mercy of the court.

It is an example of a wealthy celebrity getting treatment that no mere mortal could expect. It is amazing that the left rages against wealthy people being treated differently in court for the crimes that they commit, until one of their own finds themselves in this situation. Roman Polanski admitted to the offense, pled down the crime to something almost minor, and then refused to accept even a nominal sentence. In addition, he paid off the victim monetarily in an undisclosed settlement(preemtive witness tampering to prevent a retrial), which was even a further admission of guilt. Roman Polanski is an arrogant child molester who has laughed at us for years from his gilded exile.

Since Whoopi Goldberg tried years ago to coerce her daughter into having an abortion, it doesn’t surprise me that she said what she did. And the networks continue to report this as if the case had not been prosecuted; he plead guilty and was slated to go to federal prison in California, the same prison where Chuck Colson had been initially incarcerated. Also, they continue to refer to it as statutory rape, since the girl was underage. That would refer to consensual sex with a minor. He drugged and sodomized the girl. They continue to cite that the victim does not want to see this go any further; not uncommon for a rape victim to want to put this in the past, but it still doesn’t exonerate Polanski. His own statements about others wanting or thinking about having sex with girls is just self-justification and projection. Those idiots in Hollywood insist that after this long period of time, he must be rehabilitated. The man is unrepentant and absolutely not remorseful at all. Not to get preachy, but it says in the NT that it would be better for a man never to be born than to hurt a child; that he would be better off tying a millstone around his neck and casting himself into the sea. I would recommend that anyone who feels strongly enough about this should look at the petition signed by all the Hollywood folks, and boycott their movies, plays, TV shows and books, since they don’t deserve anyone’s patronage after defending someone who raped a child…RAPED, not “underage” sex. She didn’t have sexual relations with him; he RAPED her. Even if you don’t watch that idiotic excuse for entertainment, you should call ABC and tell them how offended you are that one of their celebrities is defending a RAPIST. If you look at Mr. Polanski’s biography, it shows that he remarried in 1989. He was 56 at the time. His new wife was 23. I know that 23 is a lot better than 13, but that’s still a little creepy.

Parents are supposed to PROTECT their children from this kind of danger! It is child abuse if they don’t. This girl was raped by more than one person.

I am boycotting the Today show and its sponsors over their defensive treatment of that pedophile Polanski. I read the transcript of the trial and had to go to the bathroom since I began heaving, imagining if one of my daughters had had something like that happen. I think we have got to send a message to Hollywood. This is a defining moment I think in the rotting decay they have created and continue to impose on our society. This man was referred to by the LA Times back then as “Hollywood pedophile” implying that he had done this before. And we know he had a sexual relationship with Natasha Kinski at age 15 after he left the US. I bet there are plenty more and I would bet he used drugs and alcohol before to accomplish this. The poor woman now probably doesn’t want to dredge all this painful stuff up and be the subject of the press. I hope this will not be swept under the carpet as a minor matter. To me this is a defining moment about the complete breakdown of any morals in our entertainment industry and noncable networks. What has our country come to?

I’ve read (can’t remember where, sorry) that he had lawyers trying to make the guilty plea go away, arguing that the prosecution wasn’t trying to extradite him. This reminded the DA’s office that the case existed and they decided to go after him.

From a political standpoint, I think going after him is great for the DA. While Hollywood will be angry, the rest of the voters will like the idea of not letting millionaire molesters get away with this.

The case reminds me of an essay Orwell wrote about Salvador Dali. Dali was a great artist but was disgustingly antisocial and physically violent towards women. You can lie about climate data and state the science is settled. You can go on television and say a tax isn’t a tax. You can also, it seems, rape a child for several hours and flee the country.

Roman Polanski is a great filmmaker. His work deserves the acclaim it’s received. Roman Polanski raped a child. No work of art, no scientific discovery, no military or political success makes that okay. He left the country, which stopped the clock on the statute of limitations. He should suffer the legal consequences of raping a child and fleeing prosecution. I hope that after he has served his time he makes more movies.

Perhaps the essence of the culture war and the political struggle is that one side feels there are absolutes and the other side doesn’t.

you are polarizing the issue. he was guilty, but the punishment was not equivalent to the standard sentence of the time. considering the trauma the man had dealt with during the era, you would consider that the judge would have empathy. it was obvious that it was anti-semitism. he wasn’t getting a fair trial. …I’ve read a bit about the trial and I don’t condemn underage sex, but considering our government does regular business with countries that have organized marriage with 12 year olds in their legal system… it seems a bit arbitrary to throw the book till we cut off all ties to Saudi Arabia
