So, This is “Female Empowerment”?

By Debbie Schlussel

Today’s USA Today gushes over a Baghdad internet cafe that caters to women only.  We’re told by the sub-headline that the cafe is wonderful because it’s “empowering and safe” and “helps close gap on skills.”

ishtarinternetcenter

Only in the Middle East would we applaud a “separate but equal” facility for women as “empowerment.”  Only in the Islamic world would we applaud a facility that is separate because Islamic men are so intolerant of women and so animalistic in their behavior that they cannot and will not control their impulses of seeing women, especially women in the workplace and on computers.  That’s why this single-sex cafe is considered “safe” for women.  They are considered open meat by these men, this religion, the Arab Street.

The day when we see women in Iraq able to walk around without their hair covered in rags (hijabs)–as they are covered in this new “empowering” facility and all over the new, “democratic,” Saddam-free, Shi’ite-controlled Iranian satellite state; the day when we see women able to interact at a co-ed internet cafe without worrying about being raped or abused by Islamic men because their big toe or ugly hair turned on some oversexed guy in a standard Saddam/Assad mustache; on that day, they’ll actually have taken a step toward empowerment in the Islamic world.

And even then–even with the most freedom for women in Middle Eastern societies, they’ll still hate America, hate Jews, hate Christians, hate the West, hate Israel.

So, all of these PR efforts in USA Today and the rest of the mainstream media to tell us how democratic and equalitarian and contemporary Iraq is becoming under extremists Shi’ites, is a lot of bunk.  And it’s all academic.  Irrelevant.

Here’s a wake-up call for these fantasists:  Women are not empowered in Iraq or anywhere in the Islamic world.  When they are, it’s window-dressing covering up for  Islamic males who act like animals and might get turned on uncontrollably to the point of rape by someone’s curls or knees.

And even when they are not and women are “empowered,” it’s simply in a weird unity, a bizarre unison of hatred, jealousy, and desire to destroy us in the West.

So, I really couldn’t care less about Azhar Al-Sheikhli’s Ishtar Internet Center internet cafe for women in Baghdad.

And neither should you.

The only thing you should care about is how much in American tax dollars is going to subsidize this exercise in compliance with a Sharia world we helped create by “liberating” Iraq to the Iranians and their Shi’ite minions in Iraq.

We have this kind of segregation still in metro Detroit. There’s a cafe in Clawson on 14 Mile, east of Main, that won’t allow or serve females.

John N on September 23, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Exclusivity is good. If, let’s say, a country club wants to keep out Jews or Muslims or people who wear towels on their heads or don’t leave tips at restaurants after being served professionally or Democrats or Republicans or trans-gendered, Conservative Satnists, I don’t care.

I don’t care if the Democrats race-bait. I don’t give a shit about double-standards or hypocrisy.

Do whatever works. That’s all that matters.

If a Southern Strategy works, then it works. If it doesn’t, to bad

If you’re going to be a savage, then be a sophisticated savage.

We’re not at war with Arabs or Muslims because they are Arabs or Muslims or because they are not Christian.

We don’t support Israel because it’s the Jewish State or because “The Jews” control the U.S. Government.

Arabs are this. Arabs are that. Jewish are this. Jewish are that. blah-blah-blah-blah….

Then I guess you would have no problem letting your wife, girlfreind, mother, sister, etc live as sub-class citizens????Maybe you agree with Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali who compared uncovered women to uncovered meat….I hope the women you know happen to come accross this post and your comments…

I guess you are allowing others to deal with you as they see fit, since you seem to have no real concerns about it. You are indeed being silly.

Is the purpose of this blog to promote the right of muslin women or to promote the hate against muslin in general?

Each religion has their own taboos. Ultra orthodox Jews do not believe women have equal right either. Recently, they removed the two female ministers from the photos in their newspapers. Women can not pray at Western Wall and many others restrictions. But Roman Catholic is not much better. Why single out conservative muslin belief in gender equality?

I would say that he was quite clear. Please provide your proof. Also, Ultra Orthodox Jews make up such a tiny part of the world’s population that it is a farcical example. Why not answer for Islam, which allegedly holds well over a billion souls?

        Sorrow01 on September 24, 2009 at 5:43 pm

The Jews may have an ancient custom not letting women pray at the wall…actually there is a room where they can pray..it holds about 40 women…I am a Catholic and I know there is no such rule in the Catholic faith…women can’t be preists…that’s it..It’s nothing compared to the neanderthal
barbaric, savagery that is purportrated by the muslims

Here are a few of your so-called “taboos” of the muslim faith

In the muslim faith if a woman is raped you have to have 4 quality male muslim men say it is so…if you can’t produce them then you are subject to death

In the muslim faith if a woman is convicted of adultery she is buried up to her neck and is killed by having rocks thrown at her

In the muslim faith a girl as early as the age of 6 can have her vagina mutilated

In the muslim faith a girl can be sold to a pervert (married) as gs 6 years old

These are just a few off the top of my head. There is not enough room to post the barbaric offences against these women.

It is not a typo that I did not capitalize the word muslim. The muslim religion gives no respect to me as a woman, and I’ll be dammed if I give any back.

C: This comment about the Jews and the Wall is absolute bullcrap. I’m a woman and have prayed at the Wall many, many times. Stop fertilizing on this site. You don’t know what you’re talking about. DS

Charmaine on September 23, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Charmaine, there is a room but we are also accorded the right to pray out in the open on part of the Plaza. We are separated from the men by a screen but we may approach the Wall, touch it, put in notes and sit there for a reasonable amount of time to meditate, pray and just “be” in the Presence. And yes, it is real and definitely evident. I live here. I go to the Wall regularly.

      MK750 on September 24, 2009 at 4:42 am

Sorry about that. My research on the subject was hastily done. I read a couple of stories about a lawsuit to allow women to pray there that was lost. Now I feel like a real reporter for the MSM…again my apologies.

Charmaine on September 24, 2009 at 7:31 am

We most certainly can pray at the Western Wall! We just can do it next to the men. There’s nothing wrong with a dividing screen in that setting. Our focus is to be on G-d not our husbands, boyfriends or that cute IDF guy who looks so gooood in his uniform.
As for the rest of your post, I agree.

    MK750 on September 24, 2009 at 4:39 am

Yes, only recently women were allowed at the extreme right of the Western Wall. If you believe that is equality, then restricting black people to the back of the bus was equality too.

People should really have some facts before they flap their scheiss kissers…

“Ultra orthodox Jews do not believe women have equal right either. Recently, they removed the two female ministers from the photos in their newspapers. Women can not pray at Western Wall and many others restrictions.”

You assigned a title to a small, fringe group, who are NOT truly “Torah observant” Jews. Those of us who actually study the Torah and are Torah observant give woman GREATER rights than men, as we see Women as the highest point of creation (if you read Genesis, you will notice that everything mentioned as being created is “higher” than what came before, i.e. fish are created after water. The last thing mentioned as created is a WOMAN). The Torah also gives rights of inheritance and divorce, amongst other rights, that no one else gave to women at that time in history (3,300 years ago).

And of course, women do INDEED pray at the temple mount/wall. Men & Women are separated in Orthodox holy places because Judaism sees the typical man for what he is- a pig, with difficulty controlling his thoughts. So women are kept out of men’s view…so the men don’t peep at them or think “improper” thoughts during times of prayer, etc. And men have more religious obligations than women, cause women don’t need their minds to be occupied with something other than sex all the time like we men do… 😉

PS- my wife dresses “modestly”, i.e. no short skirts or ass-hugging, camel-toe showing pants. Darn it. I find it highly amusing when I’m on the train and I see women tugging on their too-short skirts because they are embarrassed that if they move, something will show…

Go figure.

Isn’t it amazing that westerners, both American and European, seem to hold the images of muslim women in headscarves as something to be held up in esteem. Why? I simply see women who are enslaved, no matter what their position in life is. Enslaved to an archaic religion that is simply the most brutal belief system I have ever seen.

Nice rant, but a a good point is made here! I like the way Debbie saw through this propaganda piece and picked it apart.

I couldn’t help but notice that at least one and possibly two women in the picture are not wearing hijabs. But the important thing is that the women-only internet cafe is a clear sign that the forced segregation of women and men continues in Iraq.

Think about this folks! If women have to go to a women-only internet cafe to use the internet, how the heck are they supposed to use computers and the internet in the WORKPLACE? Hmmm? Here in America, we take it for granted that women work with men in the same workplace using computers and the the office network. If Iraqi society won’t tolerate (for whatever reason) women and men sitting in the same building and/or office to use computers, it’s a good bet that women don’t stand a chance of getting jobs in Iraq.

So it all looks good in the newspaper, but looking just slightly below the surface, it’s quite nefarious. As such, the USA TODAY story is really just a propaganda piece and I think Debbie did a good thing by calling them on it.

There is NO Santa Claus on September 23, 2009 at 9:50 pm

I really don’t know what the big fuss about women only internet cafe. In a religious society where women can not show their face, being able to use internet in public is a tremendous progress. This is even one step beyond being able to go to school.

Even today, women only schools are still every where even in the US. Is it a symbol of backwardness? I don’t think so, unless you equate conservatism with backwardness.

We all love to see the day when women rule the world. There is a theory that the conflicts in the world are due to testosterone. Being able to be educated appears to be a step in the right direction.

But there is free lunch on September 24, 2009 at 1:34 am

You’re right, Debbie, separate but equal just isn’t good enough. Which is why gay people should be able to get married and not have to settle for civil unions!

WOW Debbie you say: ” Islamic men are so intolerant of women and so animalistic in their behavior that they cannot and will not control their impulses of seeing women, especially women in the workplace and on computers”

I didn’t know these things about Myself since i’m a Muslim Egyptian man born and raised in Egypt!

From the way you write you seem a little full of hate and intolerance, you actually sound alot like the Fanatical Muslims which i myself also hate..your just another side of the coin!

Also what is wrong with a womans only internet cafe? Do you think everyones culture has to be just like YOURS? Maybe these women feel more comfortable this way, some of them, their culture & way of life is not “American” as you wish it to be…I’m from Egypt & i’ve never seen a womans only internet cafe, but i’m sure there are some, because thats what some women would choose there..

I also see all your writing about “Palestine & Israel” maybe you should go live in Gaza for a few days then come write us a blog about how “innocent & nice” the poor Israeli Govt is..

I’m no fan of Hamas, actually i hate all RADICAL & OPPRESSING organizations, but i do understand why there is a Hamas, why there is a Hizbolla..the reason is simple, Israel’s oppression of the Palestinians, Many Israelis even protest what their Govt does to the Palestinian MUSLIMS & CHRISTIANS ALIKE…No Religion weather it be Muslim, Christian, or Jewish condones what Israel does…Beign against Israel’s oppression doesn’t make anyone “Anti-Semetic” it makes them “Anti-Israel”.. Its the uneducated & simple minded who actually acuse all Jews of being Zionists, this is not true, many Jews are not Zionists & support Palestine!

I guess what just happened in Gaza this year was ok..surrounding the entire Gaza population, putting a blockade on them for 2 years, then when they Rebel they are COLLECTIVLEY PUNISHED…i guess its like Lebanon 2006 when 1800 Lebanese & Beirut was Bombed as if it was world war 2 because Hizbolla kidnapped some Israeli Occupying soldiers from the SHEBA FARMS (occupied Lebanese Territory) ya that gave Israel the right to BOMB ALL BEIRUT & KILL ALL THOSE PEOPLE!

Again your tone shows alot of Anger & hostility..i am one of the first to attack Fundementalists, specially when they say they are Muslims, because they give a bad name to my Religion..i respect all religions and good people..but it seems you only respect some relgions and if anyone is associated with it, they must be Radical nut jobs..

Tarek M. Salah on September 24, 2009 at 6:36 am

    Tarek-
Go sell your bullshit to a farmer.

Explain between 1948 & 1967, when “Gaza” and the “west bank” were OCCUPIED by the newly invented “Trans-Jordanians” and your own countries armies… why did EGYPT not allow the “palestinians” to become citizens of Egypt if THEY wanted to? Why did EGYPT not ANNEX Gaza, or make it part of Egypt, or make any other claim on it?

Explain pre-1948, when Arabs/muslims regularly marauded and raped, tortured, and murdered Jews (Hebron, 1929 anyone?). Explain the “Grand Mufti” Husseini, the nazi lover who visited with Hitler and helped form a volunteer muslim DEATH’S HEAD unit, the LARGEST unit of the German army?

Explain HAMAS’ charter, (the HAMAS who you “understand”), specifically articles 7 & 13, which call for the GENOCIDE of ALL JEWS, not just for the destruction of Israel, and specifically state “there will be no peace” or treaties?

Explain Hizballah/Islamic Jihad’s (who you “understand”) bombing of the US Marine barracks that murdered over 230 Marines, who were there PROTECTING the citizens of Lebanon.

Explain, if you can, the ISLAMIC HADITH that states “the day [of Judgement] will not come about until you fight the Jews and KILL them”.

And yes, we know that the dictatorship called “Egypt” is essentially a secularized country; when the Muslim Brotherhood gets too worked up over something, the government sends in troops to kill them (cause of course muslims kill more muslims than anyone else).

Explain how, for hundreds of years, while the land you call “palestine” was under control of the Turkish Ottoman MUSLIM empire, it was nothing but a barren, rocky backwater, not fit for a Sultan to ever visit. And how only after Jews started returning en-mass in the late 1800’s and draining swamps and building successful farms and other businesses, giving JOBS to many Arabs, leading to massive IMMIGRATION of Arabs from OTHER lands.

And I’ve been to Gaza… long ago. While it was a shit hole then (under so-called “Israeli occupation”, it was better than it is now, under the control of phony crooks who pretend to care about religion and the people. Where’s Arafat’s wife these days? What does she do for a living? Oh yeah, why should a BILLIONAIRE’s wife work? How did Arafat BECOME a Billionaire, considering he never actually WORKED? What could the poor, oppressed, occupied “palestinians” do with a billion dollars? Hmmm…. EAT? DRINK? BE MERRY???

(And let’s not forget the recorded statement of Arab leaders declaring “we are not “palestinians”, we are Arabs”)

    Yeah. I thought so.

Doda McCheesle on September 24, 2009 at 2:22 pm

This is for Tarek:

There is nothing wrong with a “womans only internet cafe” in and of itself. The problem is that to use the internet woman must use a “womans only internet cafe”. They don’t have the option of using one that is co-ed.

The rest of your article simply shows your ignorance of the facts (For instance even the Zionist hotbed United abomiNations does not recognize Sheba Farms as being part of Lebanon and agreed Israel does not occupy any Lebanese territory).

I_AM_ME on September 24, 2009 at 8:13 am

You know why they have segregated internet cafes? It makes it easier for the men to identify the women who use these places so they can stone them at a later date. Besides, the women like these segregated places because then they don’t have to deal with sticky keyboards with sheeps hair all over the place.

BTW, I’m sure most of you know that segregation is going on all over the civilized world now because of men who don’t have common decency. In Japan, the subways have gotten so bad with the subway cars packed with people like sardines that there are perverted men who grope women all the time and cannot be ID’ed. Now in Japan they have segregated subway cars to alleviate this problem.

Jarhead on September 24, 2009 at 10:20 am

Forget ‘hijab’s’. I’m all for donning the full-bodied ‘chador’. In fact, it’s a route we may want to consider here in the West. We are far too preoccupied and obsessed with physical appearance. Our self-indulgence is eating us up.

Imagine getting to know someone without being influenced by their looks? We’d truly find the essence in everyone. Yes, I do like the concept of the ‘chador’. We could really listen to someone’s heart that way. The only thing I’d do is have a brown or maybe dark grey version for the men so at least we could distinguish the genders; we can’t rely on height alone.

THK (Toronto, Canada) on September 24, 2009 at 10:23 am

Yes, but that does not happen with Moslem men. However, why not be a trailblazer yourself in this area. I think it would be good for your to don a large garbage bag when you go out in public, and only speak when you are spoken to.

I think wehen we stop seeing 13, 14 or 15 year old girls going back to places like Yemen, to marry a man they have never met, but actually allow them to develop their mind through education and social experiences, then the Muslims as a culture may advance. If you don’t think they are infiltrating our society, keep deluding yourself. They are slowly and quietly taking over. They have no regard for western culture or customs or courtesies except they want to take us over financially. You watch. It is going to happen.

Musiccgirl on September 24, 2009 at 10:40 am

The consensus of the Orthodox Jewish community has been that women are ineligible to becoming rabbis; the growing calls for requests for Orthodox yeshivas to admit women as rabbinical students has resulted in widespread opposition among the Orthodox rabbinate. Rabbi Norman Lamm, one of the leaders of Modern Orthodoxy and Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva University’s Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, opposes giving semicha to women. “It shakes the boundaries of tradition, and I would never allow it.” Writing in an article in the Jewish Observer, Moshe Y’chiail Friedman states that Orthodox Judaism prohibits women from being given semicha and serving as rabbis. He holds that the trend towards this goal is driven by sociology, and not halakha. In his words, the idea is a “quirky fad.” No Orthodox rabbinical association (e.g. Agudath Yisrael, Rabbinical Council of America) has allowed women to be ordained using the term rabbi.
