Feel Old?: ROCKY Turns 30!

By
Do you remember when the original “Rocky” movie came to theaters in 1976? If you do (it won an Oscar for Best Picture that year), perhaps you feel old.
But don’t despair.
This month, “Rocky” turns 30. But that’s also a reason to give you hope in your old age. This year, Sylvester Stallone is both reprising the uplifting “Rocky Balboa” role that made him a star (in “Rocky 6”) AND turning 60. We think he is in very good shape for his age, judging from this December photo . . . especially with roughly one “Rocky” installment per decade of life and a lot of bad movies in between.

Rocky Balboa/Sly Stallone: Now and Then

Sly Stallone and the , both up there in age and both making comebacks. Very refreshing in an age where the Lindsay Lohans and 20-somethings of the world rule.

I know how you feel…
(Hey, I’ve been feeling old lately… And I wasn’t even around in ’76!)

Sorry Debbie, but I just don’t think yet another tired Rocky movie is a good thing. The original was great and the second and third were very good, but Rocky should have retired and stayed retired after the third movie.

I think that Stallone did have at least one good movie besides the Rocky series. I saw his FIST back in the 70s. It’s a take off on the Jimmy Hoffa story, how Hoffa got a start as a tough guy and labor organizer fighting against management goons, etc. The first half of the film is pretty good and keeps up the viewer’s interest. But the second half somehow falls flat. Of course, the Jimmy Hoffa character, played by Stallone, gets killed or vanishes somehow. But we knew that. In any case, a lot of the film is realistic, methinks. And I am a former Teamsters’ Union member [also formerly with the Seafarers International]. So I know a little about unions going back to the sixties. No doubt a lot of folk around Detroit are even more familiar with the solid rock unions of yesteryear than I am.

Sly was good in Rambo too. And Cop Land. He looks great, I always liked him. He’s been in some great terrible movies, remember Cobra?
