Joker: Liberal Apologism For Anti-Cop Thugs, Terrorists & Criminals

[(Remember, you can hear my movie reviews most Fridays on “The Larry The Cable Guy Show” at around 10:35 a.m. Eastern on SiriusXM’s Jeff and Larry’s Comedy Roundup Channel 97 and every Friday on the Richard Dixon Show on Birmingham, Alabama’s Talk 99.5 at 1:30 p.m. Eastern.)]

Joker (Rated R), the unnecessary “origin” story of the comic book and movie villain, is a textbook exercise in liberal apologism and excuses for evil. Don’t waste your time on this pointless celluloid screed.

I sat through this two-hour, one-minute waste of time–in theaters today–getting angrier and angrier about the hype surrounding this big nothing. In fact, it’s far worse than a big nothing because it’s chock full of excuses and “reasons” why we should be sympathetic to the criminally insane. Why we shouldn’t feel disgust with them, but instead commiserate.

The message of this movie is: evil White men and their White privilege, as well as the general category of the One Percent, are the bad guys. They made him do it. So did the evil White cops. These are the real bad guys, too. Not Joker (played by Joaquin Phoenix). The one White guy we should hate is not really a villain. He’s the hero.

It’s not his fault he’s a terrorist and criminal. He was forced into it because he’s a disabled, poor, bullied, sad guy who had no other choice. Just like the 9/11 hijackers and Boston Marathon Bombers and Fort Hood Massacre-ists and San Bernardino Mass Murderers had no other choice because, after all, they were “other-ized” for being Muslim. Minorities who commit crimes are poor and discriminated against, and they, too, are “forced into” this life. And the many Muslims over the years who did dry runs on planes were all “mentally ill.” Yeah, that’s the ticket . . . if you’re an idiot. I’m sick of being told to have compassion for this kind of evil, which is what this movie did for two hours plus.

Um, no thank you. That’s the “logic” of mindless cult followers of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. And sadly, the millions who will go see this sad synthetic cross-dressing as cinema will come out “thinking” (if you can call it that, rather than what it is: the absence of thought) the same way. And that’s probably the way they came in.

More than a decade ago, on this site, I decried the celebration and glorification of “The Joker”–who is, in reality, nothing but a terrorist–in a previous Batman movie. Now he isn’t even “The Joker.” He’s just Joker, like Cher and Barack and Michelle and Hillary and Bill and Bernie and sundry others who don’t deserve to be known by one name because they simply aren’t “all that.” And he’s celebrated even more in this movie. I have the same complaint here . . . on steroids.

On top of that, this movie is a poor amalgamation/rip-off of several movies most of which, themselves, weren’t that great. There’s the wanton media celebration and Manson-esque hero-worship of pointless murder a la Natural Born Killers. Then, there’s the nutjob fan idolizing a late-night talk show host/comedian to the point of crime and violence a la The King of Comedy (which shares a star with this film in the uber-left, self-important tantrumist Robert De Niro). And finally, there’s the weird dancing and utterances of a murderous criminal a la Silence of the Lambs (a far better flick than this crap). So unoriginal was this movie that I was waiting to hear, “It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.”

And by the way, this overdone trend of entertainment industry fetishization of clowns has grown tiresome. In real life, most of them are just nice working-class stiffs trying to make a living in the midst of bratty, spoiled, unappreciative, cellphone-addled kids. Time for showbiz elitists to give ’em a break.

This movie is chock full of the litany of usual crap we typically hear from liberals who implore us to be “sensitive” to and “understand” the “root causes” of Islamic terrorists, inner city criminals, and other assorted malefactors they’ve chosen to turn into folk heroes (a motley crew that now also apparently includes Joe Biden and his hands and nose and Hunter Biden and his business dealings).

We’re told from the beginning that Joker f/k/a Arthur Fleck is afflicted with mental illness and a condition sort of like Tourette’s Syndrome, causing him to laugh uncontrollably in inappropriate situations. He can’t help it. He also is badly abused by everybody even though he’s just a hard-working guy trying his best to make a living in thankless gigs as a clown. It’s not his fault. People bully him. Especially three evil rich White frat-boy types who mock and beat him. They deserved to be killed because they are the epitome of White privilege. So does the supposed rich evil White capitalist father of Joker, who abandoned him and his crazy mother. Ah, and then there’s the mother. She’s mentally ill and has her grown son bathing her while she’s completely nude. That’s on top of the abuse she inflicted on him when he was a kid.

All of these occurrences are the “back story” of why Joker is forced to do what he’s done, why he’s serial-killed innocent people, who this movie implores us are “not so innocent” and actually “deserved it,” along with all the cops who are murdered here. They are all White and evil, too, along with their upper-class White capitalist, men-of-industry counterparts, symbolized by the young Bruce Wayne’s (future Batman’s) titan of industry father, who is just a jerk that abuses “the (working class) help.”

Sorry, but this slow two hour drag of an Elizabeth Warren campaign speech wasn’t entertaining for me. It was and is disturbing. And not in a good way. Not in a way that makes you think. Only in a way that makes you regret you spent money and time you’ll never get back to see this attack on Whites and capitalism made by hypocritical uber-liberal Hollywood Whites and capitalists who try to pretend they are neither. These are the same people who hype this movie for money and couldn’t care less about copycat violence resulting from this garbage. And yet if a Joker came to your neighborhood, they want to take your guns and rights away from you and leave you defenseless, while they live in their heavily guarded, gated, manicured, mansioned enclaves. We really didn’t need a “back story” or to learn about “the origin” of The Joker. Lalaland elites just needed more cash in their bank accounts and they knew suckers would predictably pay like the lemmings they are to see this dumbassery in droves.

They should have left the letter “R” out of the title of this. It’s just a Joke. And it’s on you.

Thanks for saving me two hours of my life, Debbie! I was tempted until I read your review.

Love your reviewes ,keep writing!!! Your “Joker” review was ,as usual, the best I’ve read. My memory is not great ,but it seems P.J. Media and Breitbart both ran reviews, that, confused more than enlightened. Did the movie glorify Incels? Was Hollywood attacking average America, I don’t know?

What’s important here is Schlussel keeping tabs on the film industry and reporting the brainwashing crap that is being unloaded on the general public.

I doubt any readers here would have gone to see “Joker” except by mistake or before reading Schlussel’s review.

The insight that Schlussel provides in her film reviews is of actual value rather than the brain-dead reporting of many other reviews.

And for those rare movies that are worth seeing…

Thank you Debbie Schlussel for your reviews in both cases.

I too am from Detroit, living in the Los Angeles area. I believe you are related to Rosie (Meckler) and Mark Schlussel that I have known since I was a young child…

Good review Debbie, speaking of clowns, there are good ones and bad ones. Politically correct ones are of course the good ones. Who can forget the Rodeo clown who mocked Obama at Missouri State Fair banned from performing. But surprise surprise, in 1994, a President George H. W. Bush dummy was set up at a rodeo and actually attacked by a bull. No outrage ensued. Nobody was banned or fired. Just a thought.

Great & deserving review much appreciated but if you think Joker is leftist garbage try sitting through the latest installment of Designated Survivor (S03) – makes Joker look like a joke!!

I don’t think I’m going to see “Joker.” It’s just not the movie I want to see. I’m going to put this on my must miss list.

Glad you are back Debbie, I read an earlier review and was going to take my wife to see this show(she really didn’t want to go) so you saved us the aggravation, thanks!

Debbie–

Bravura job! What a passionate review, and attack on the obviously self-hating Hollywood elites.

I think the main reason that the stars have to isolate themselves is not so much for security, but rather that the public would soon despise them if they knew what most of them were really like.

Where are the moguls, now that we really need them?

Good points but “The King of Comedy” is a great film.

V: Agreed/Great minds . . . . I loved “The King of Comedy.” It’s the other films this ripped off that I didn’t think were so great. Thanks. DS

All muslims are violent. Evil is central to Islam. What else do you expect from a ‘religion’ invented by illiterate Bedouin sheep-rapists?

Thank you, Debbie. I so very rarely go to theaters to see movies anymore, because the writing is terrible, the acting is bad, and the morality is worse.

There was a time a Marxist inversion of the Batman mythos would have been applauded by Salon etc.
Batman wasn’t and I think that’s primarily because race is largely irrelevant for the main protagonist which doesn’t sit well with today’s intersectionality critics.

Love your reviews ,but please direct us to the one or two movies out there that don’t suck.

mark dunn on October 18, 2019 at 11:45 am

In fairness, the movie could also be understood as a meditation on how a disturbed society creates its heroes.
