Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – Just Okay (All the Bad Guys Are White; Heroes All Minorities)

By Debbie Schlussel

I saw the new Star Wars prequel, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” yesterday morning, under heavy security and lock and key. But it ain’t all that. The movie–which debuts in theaters Friday (early screenings Thursday night)–was just okay. Plus, I couldn’t help but notice a stark casting decision: all the evil Empire leaders are old White men, and all the rebel leaders and heroes are minorities (including a whiny Muslim dude) and a perpetually-miserable chick.

At some point, one would expect that people will get sick of Disney/Lucasfilm serving up what is essentially the same Star Wars movie plot over and over again with more and more politically-correct, watered-down characters. But apparently not yet, as this movie is expected to do blockbuster numbers at the box office. Still, the movie is exactly that: a watered-down rehash of the original Star Wars movie from 40 years ago, with flat, boring characters picked for their nationalities and non-White status only. The story is okay, but there’s no magic here, no excitement the way there was for Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and his suave smart-aleckiness, no naive but noble Luke Skywalker. Instead, we get New Coke . . . or probably Crystal Pepsi, because it tastes flat and it’s so clear and obvious you’re being served up an inferior imitation of the original thing. Mediocrity gets old . . . eventually. Though not in America.

Yes, there are a few characters from Star Wars movies past, including Darth Vader. I won’t reveal those familiar old faces who make cameos, but I’m not spoiling anything by telling you Vader’s in this (it’s in all of the trailers and press coverage). And at least one evil old White man from the original is back, too, courtesy of the magic of computer and digital regeneration. But the story isn’t that exciting. Been there, seen that. And it was done better the first four times, including in last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which I liked a lot better (read my review), despite it’s verge into political correctness. This one is over the top in that department. I mean, we’re talkin’ hitting you over the head with a two-by-four with it.

All of the generals and directors and commanders of the Empire look the same: old, White, and evil-looking. And the rebels are some Hispanics (Diego Luna and they even rehabbed Jimmy Smits from some crypt), some Asian dudes (one of them blind), some Black guys, a dour chick, and a Pakistani Muslim–Muslim-grievance-theater rapper and actor Riz Ahmed, who plays Bodhi Rook. I’m bummed there was no Egyptian transsexual vegan knitter. Would it have killed them to have even just one White male rebel hero? Or was Jedi “White privilege” used up in the first Star Wars flick? Maybe I can start a hashtag: #EvilEmpireSoWhite. Funny how the #OscarsSoWhite isn’t whining about no minorities cast for those roles.

The movie takes place before the original and after the Jar-Jar Binks fiasco set of movies. There aren’t any Jedi Knights or Kedi warriors per se, although we know that there is a Force and it is with some of the characters. Still, the Force seems to be missing most of the time, if not all of it. The characters are boring, the story is full of holes, and as I noted, it just lacks any charisma or magic. There’s no charm here. And it’s missing any kind of warmth, the kind you felt with the original Star Wars trilogy, back in the day. I guess maybe that’s the times we’re living in–a colder world.

Felicity Jones–the dullest, most overrated actress on Earth–is a dud as the heroine Jyn Erso. She looks bitter and sour all the time, and her acting is equally unremarkable and unenthusiastic. Even though, supposedly, the Force is with her (or something), it’s hard to believe that she has the chops of a male MMA fighter. But in today’s Star Wars world, everything has to be chickified (” target=”_blank”>as it was in last year’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”–again, read my review). Just how many times must Luke Skywalker be remade into a girl? She’s the daughter of the White male architect of the Death Star. But she’s been captured and joins the rebels. Plus her dad isn’t as evil is you might think. She and a band of others–again, all minorities–come together with the Rebel Alliance to steal the plans for the Death Star. That a band of rebels stole those plans, was referenced in the original Star Wars movie, and from that, the filmmakers created this movie.

There’s no Yoda here, but there are the traditional scenes of aliens in a bar, however so brief. And there’s the usual magnificent John Williams music, although the Darth Vader theme is muted and the main Star Wars theme is as well (at least until the closing credits roll). There’s also a more rudimentary droid than the shiny gold C3PO we’re used to (why do all Droids have an English accent?). The studio asked me not to provide intricate details of plot points or to give away twists and other spoilers. But, sadly, other than the cameos I alluded to above, there really aren’t any of these to give. The movie just wasn’t that suspenseful or exciting.

I didn’t hate this movie. And there is–per usual with Star Wars flicks–stark good versus evil, which I like. But I hated the PC casting. And I just wasn’t very overwhelmed (or whelmed in any way) by this movie. It’s just a churned out factory product, and nothing I’d watch again like I did with other Star Wars movies. While it’s not objectionable, it’s not that likable, either. It’s just . . . okay. Color me disappointed.

As Darth Vader might say, I find this film’s lack of imagination disturbing.

Forget the Evil Empire. I’ve met the Mediocre Empire. It’s called Disney.

***

BTW, I say all of this as someone who is a tremendous, life-long Star Wars fan. (Since we aren’t Trekkies, are we “Warsies”? We don’t have a term.) My late father took me to see the original when I was just seven years old. In a day when parents still cared about what their kids consumed, he went to see it first. “Kids, you have to see this great movie!” he said. When it comes to Rogue One, I can hear my dad wondering, “Is that all there is?”

Debbie, did you get the impression that this movie is trying to project the evil empire as a replica of Trump’s America, and the heroes as the assorted coalition of Feminists-Illegals-Muslims-Blacks opposed to him?

I’ve read that this movie is being boycotted by Trump fans b’cos of its anti-Trump bias – like here.

I: Well, it is anti-White and definitely the Hillary-Clinton/Liberal fantasy view of the world, so in that sense it’s kinda “anti-Trump,” but I didn’t see it as against Trump specifically. Just liberal crap. DS

Infidel on December 13, 2016 at 1:37 pm

The script for this movie would have been written several years before Trump even announced he was running for President.
So the movie isn’t specifically anti-Trump.

But it is certainly total PC liberalism.
Did any of the characters have on T-shirts saying
“Coruscantian lives matter” or maybe “Occupy Naboo”?

    Steve G on December 13, 2016 at 9:33 pm

WOW. All the bad guys are white. A big generalization from just a few characters portrayed. Why not all evil stormtroopers are black because of the one character and only black actor in SW7?
BTW all white people are evil in real life, but they rule! Woo hoo!
As Obiwan always said rightly so, it’s about perspective. The old Republic was evil, so the trade federation formed to get freedom from unjust government. The Empire was formed to secure peace. The rebellion was formed because of stupid liberal fantasy narratives about artificial and foolish notions of right and wrong and everyone should be socialist and communist.
Everyone needs to STFU. Except me of course.

Satan’s first attack is against God’s order of creation. God created Man and then created Woman. God – Man – Woman through Marriage. God’s order of creation. Hollywood and modern society attacks this. If you think and meditate on this it makes sense. Satan is always attacking God’s ordered societ.
Let me know what you think!

btw The last time I went to an actual movie theatre was 3 years ago. I went with my parents to Mutant Ninja Turtles at the Frisco mall after church on a Sunday.

Great review, Debbie. I’ll be avoiding it like the plague. I hated every one of the other ones, other than the original three, so I wasn’t planning on seeing it anyway, but you just gave me all the more reasons to not see it. Maybe I’ll watch it on one of the movie channels in a couple years and fall asleep on the couch like I do with the other Star Wars and Harry Potter movies.

Brian Roou on December 13, 2016 at 4:55 pm

Last film I actually saw in a theater was also from Disney- “The Black Hole.” I am now seeing it as a prequel for all things to come from that studio.

We should not be surprised by the victory of sub-mediocrity as the new standard and by pop culture sinking further into the abyss. It is a sobering thought to consider that it was not too long ago that Kennedy had the vision to put a man on the moon, while today, Obama has achieved his vision to put one in the ladies restroom.

Ralph Adamo on December 13, 2016 at 5:32 pm

It sounds like Star Wars has become an Affirmative Action endeavor, rather than a cinematic one.

Worry01 on December 13, 2016 at 5:56 pm

Wow you are racist

Anna on December 13, 2016 at 6:08 pm

Oh wow, Anna, is that the best you can do? A knee-jerk “progressive” utterance of “you are a racist?” Did the thought ever occur to you that DS is pointing out that this movie is racist because it cannot be an accident that all of the villains are old White men and the heroes are all non-Whites? Or is “racism” only a mindless one-way street to you?

Ralph Adamo on December 13, 2016 at 7:14 pm

Nowadays, being called a racist just means you are paying attention

tommy helms on December 13, 2016 at 8:29 pm

    Wow you’re a liberal.

    Ken B on December 15, 2016 at 8:06 am

These movies are primarily focused on overseas box office, especially China and other parts of Asia. They give up a bit in the US, but most of the rest of the world gets to hate on white men.

adam on December 13, 2016 at 6:29 pm

Disagree. ANti-White sentiment is almost exclusively a faux ‘rebel’ Anglo-Saxon nation degeneracy. People in China like America and White people. They think we are nice and hot.

The anti-White racism was strictly made by Hollywood elites. It betrays their true view of European civilization. They do not hide it anymore.

From the review on FoxNews.com… “Composer Michael Giacchino has the unenviable task of being the first composer not named John Williams to score a “Star Wars” movie. Giacchino has unequivocally written a knock-out score steeped in “Star Wars” tradition without sacrificing his own unique voice. The score features memorable themes – something that is also very difficult to accomplish in 2017 – while occasionally weaving in some of Williams’ classics. Jyn’s theme, which grounds the entire score, is a highlight in Giacchino’s body of work.”

Given “The Donald’s” meet-and-greet’s at Trump Tower with the likes of Kanye West (uggh!), it would appear that Debbie’s prediction in one of her previous articles, that the “Trump Revolution” would have more in common with Mel Brooks’ 1987 parody Spaceballs than with the original 1977 (released) Star Wars film, would seem to be coming to pass. How much are any of you willing to bet that among those he’ll be photo-op’ing with at the Trump Tower lobby before long will be Hillary, herself?

Oh, yeah, and as for this Star Wars “rogue” film: Count me out, too. I presume that it’s “rogue” in the sense of it going farther away from George Lucas’ vision. Besides the whole PC/liberal-left cacophony and every such cliche in the book (the show “diversity” of people looking different but thinking alike).

ConcernedPatriot on December 13, 2016 at 11:18 pm

I see…so illegal SPACE aliens are just as heroic to liberals as the earthly kind.

YCHtT on December 14, 2016 at 1:30 am

I wasn’t planning on seeing this movie. I’m still not going to. I,too, saw the original “Star Wars” when it first came out. I enjoyed it. It seems like these people are GOING out of their way to remove ANYTHING that made “Star Wars” so special in the first place.
And,just for the record,I didn’t like the 2016 version of “Ghostbusters,”either. The special effects may have been better than the 1984 version, but not as much fun to watch. It seems like there are far too many in Hollywood who seem to want to make movies only for people who think like they do and no one else. And,they’re surprised when NO ONE in America wants to see their stuff? Perhaps if they weren’t so busy trashing their own country, they’d be in much better shape. When will Hollywood ever learn?

Ghostwriter on December 14, 2016 at 7:29 am

I noticed something missing in the ratings for this film – a Hillary Clinton (with that famous shot of her eyes bulging and her facial expression particularly twisted). Especially given the presence of Felicity Jones and her particular role.

As to ‘Ghostwriter’s’ query as to when will Hollywood ever learn: I suspect never. Far too many in that community have drunk the Kool-Aid to crawl out from under.

ConcernedPatriot on December 14, 2016 at 8:32 am

Thank you Debbie for this review. From the looks of things this looks like Disney took the cast of Quantico and threw them into a outer space. The only difference is the lead girl is White instead of Indian. I guess from here on out there won’t be a strong White male character like in the first Star Wars back in 1977. I still remember how it was with my Dad and brothers having fun watching Luke, Han, Michelle O er, I mean Chewbacca, Leia and Obi-Wan Kenobi taking on Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, Grand Moff Tarkin and the Death Star. I guess in the world that we live in now White males in movies and TV will either be bumbling idiots (Kevin Can Wait), snarky Conservatives (Last Man Standing)or nonexistent. They will also be portrayed as evil in movies (The Sum of All Fears)and District 13. We must never portray Muslims or minorities as evil less we offend CAIR or BLM and where is the fun in that. Thankfully I’ll be able to use the working towards wrapping up(literally) Christmas shopping as an excuse to skip this movie. I’ll either wait until the first of next year or when it comes out on DVD. Either way to this diehard Warsie(thanks Debbie) the Star Wars pc-ness is starting to get laughable on a galactic scale.

Ken B on December 14, 2016 at 9:33 am

Oh no! Where will we go to see white men in a leading role in films???

You’re acting just as oppressed as the people you hate, and with so much less justification! It’s hilarious to see.

Wanton on January 8, 2017 at 8:44 am

I have never sat through a whole Star Wars movie. My all-time favorite Sci-Fi movie is “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (original – 1951). Although the special effects lacked badly back then, the story, the materials and technology that was brought to Earth by Klatuu & Gort, were decades ahead of that time. Lasers, high strength polymers, neutralizing the power grids, the explanation of space flight (by Klatuu), all spot on.

Muzzcrusher on December 14, 2016 at 10:44 am

M, you can’t even talk about the 1951 “The Day the Earth Stood Still” in comparison with today’s sci-fi attempts, as the “The Day” is other-worldly by comparison.

“The Day” had a great short story as a base, a great script, a first-rate director (Robert Wise, who edited “Citizen Kane” and directed one of the best-filmed musicals, “The Sound of Music”), an amazing musical score (by Bernard Herrmann, best known for composing scores for Hitchcock’s best movies and “Citizen Kane”), and some fine acting by Michael Renee and Patricia Neal.

So, in spite of some cheesy special effects by today’s standards (with the role of Gort played by Lock Martin in heavy “robot” suit, who was the doorman from Grauman’s Chinese Theater, where star placed their handprints and footprints in cement; and a spaceship make of wiid, wire, and plaster of Paris), “The Day” (1951) still ranks as one of the best sci-fi films of all time.

Ralph Adamo on December 14, 2016 at 5:34 pm

Plus, I forgot to mention that George Lucas was a great fan of “The Day” (1951) and named two of the alien bounty hunters in his Star Wars trilogy “Klaatu” and “Barada Nikto.” To those familiar with “The Day,” those words are very important. Indeed, the fate of the Earth depended upon them.

Ralph Adamo on December 14, 2016 at 5:37 pm

We won’t be seeing it! Thanks for the heads up Debbie!

Samantha on December 14, 2016 at 4:50 pm

Ugh. I was done with “Star Wars” when Lucas really lost it…as he was producing the 3rd one…it was supposed to be “Revenge Of The Jedi” and even in the 80’s he went PC & soft and changed it to “Return Of The Jedi”. I was out even before it hit the theatre…and I was glad because I saw they had silly furry bears running thru’ it. I am still annoyed by it and have never seen any “Star Wars” films other than the 1st two…and I was big-time into them. I still geek out when I see stuff from them…my story was kinda like DS’…my Dad saw it and took all us kids to see it over and over again. We LOVED it.

Maybe it is for the best…I would be a complete Star Wars geek if I liked the 3rd one…I think I focused on “Blade Runner” and “Indiana Jones” after that. Anyway, these geeky Star Wars flicks suck because the geeky fan boys and girls who like them suck. They are very weird and strange…and I usually like that combo…but here, it is not even a little bit cool. Just icky. Yuck!

What a disappointment. Anyway, I have big love for the first two but anything after that I don’t care about…

Skunky on December 14, 2016 at 9:08 pm

Even the trailer put me to sleep. The anti-white bias is strong in this one, but they put in two Asian heroes to appease Chinese/Malaysian movie-goers.

DS_ROCKS! on December 15, 2016 at 11:57 am

Star Wars. Wasn’t that big in the 70’s?

JeffT on December 15, 2016 at 1:09 pm

Thanks Debbie. Will boycott it.

Frank on December 15, 2016 at 8:55 pm

It is amazing that people are unaware! I liked Star Wars , it was fresh and inovative. However, by far, to this day, The Empire Striles Back was the best. Directed by a Jew, Irwin Kirshner, who ignored Lucas’s I aged ability to screw things up! It was dark, and my major criticism of that film, too much time on Yoda’s planet. BTW, I was only 14 at the time.

Tov on December 16, 2016 at 4:45 am

The main character is white… But since it’s not a white male, it’s racist?

And if you paid any attention to SW lore, there is a reason the empire is filled with such a lack of diversity: the Emperor is a speciesist and a bigot. It is literally in print.

Keep on fighting the good fight, though. We really need to make white men feel more comfortable in cinema.

Tom on December 16, 2016 at 7:55 pm

It is literally in print, but weirdly I don’t think that was Lucas’ own idea. I could be wrong, but it seems like an extrapolation by the book writers from the fact that all the Imperial troops in the first three movies were human, which was probably actually budgetary.

In the prequels Palpatine has a ton of alien henchmen.

eloris on December 17, 2016 at 2:35 pm

Not all films have to fit the stereotype of the feel good space operas of the original trilogy we were promised a gritty dark war film and it was delivered. Also the empire is an order composed of male officers so that might explain your complaint. Also this film is not just good vs evil the good guys are bad as well they kill people in cold blood and watch while innocents are killed.

Jack on December 17, 2016 at 7:51 am

Oh lord…. Something else to boycott for you lot. Just checking that you guys know that the villains for the last 40 years of Star Wars happened to have white skin. Including one voiced by a black actor. Seriously. Get a grip on reality. Sounds like the same inane comments that episode 3 was anti-Bush. Yawn. The actors were fine, and fit their respective roles. Ever think it just gets boring looking at white faces in the same roles? This whitey does. Donnie Yen was freaking awesome. Go ahead with your boycott people, and continue seeing whatever it is you want to see in these movies, no matter how absurd and delusional that it is. Leaves more seats to the rest of us.

John-Paul on December 18, 2016 at 2:48 am

Just a minor correction, the music for this one was actually composed by Michael Giacchino (though based on Williams’ original scoring)

CB on December 18, 2016 at 5:22 am

hmm I watched it last night, well I fell asleep 30 min in. After being introduced to the black colored c3p0s. I didn’t know what was going on in terms of time and occurrence.
As for the White are villains and blah blah, could it be that all movies would need to be portrayed this way because Whites are in the superior position of contol. Would it be believable if you had other ethnicities in control? Also as these libs flip things and put other ethnicities in control they will become the evil villains and Whites will be the heroes. See how that works

MrBigBrain on December 19, 2016 at 12:15 pm

Seriously? You have a problem wih minorites being the hero or something? Why are ppl like you abe to exist? What a bitter bitter world you live in… what minorites took this country from you? Stop hating on jones…compare your picture with hers end of story..maybe if you looked like her you woudnt be so bitter…

nawyaw on January 1, 2017 at 9:23 pm

Jesus, you lot are more obsessed with minority representation in movies than the people you hate! It’s hilarious.

Wanton on January 8, 2017 at 8:39 am

Movies and TV regularly make white males the bad guys while making non-white people look good. Look at “The Simpson’s”, with the bumbling white male police chief who’s always saying stupid things and is always being corrected by his highly intelligent black deputy. The show “Bones” has the white males on the show regularly look like idiots while their black female boss is perfect.

The murderers on the “CSI” series were almost always white males, but every single show always had plenty of good black male characters as policemen, firemen, paramedics, detectives, and so on. And you could always count on the show having the white killer being led off in handcuffs by a black policeman at the end of almost every show, even though most of the policemen you see are white. Why did that almost always happen, I wonder?

The “Columbo” series never had one black murderer on a show. They were always white, but good black cops and other characters were seen from time to time, and the show had a black cop be a regular later on.

All “The Matrix” movies had all the bad guys be white, with two even being albinos, but everybody in the movie who was black or brown or yellow was on the good side.

It’s really rare to find a movie or TV series with a black villain, but almost every movie that comes out has a least one good black character in it, like about every TV show. I could go on and on.

Anyone who denies the liberal media isn’t PC is living in unreality.

Jon on January 13, 2017 at 5:29 pm

This is just dumb to see something like a Star Wars movie and say its like “Oh this is racist for having the bad guys all white!” That proves you need to shut the f-ck up Debbie because if you read the star wars lore and some cannon comics you would know that there are minorities in the Emipreof high power.

Wooop on February 10, 2017 at 8:20 pm

I’m not the only one, apparently.

I don’t think this is PC, rather it’s about $$$. Disney marketing and execs trying to maximize profit. The white male is already a captured demographic for Star Wars. I also think it’s why they got the director they did — malleable to influence from above. They weren’t looking for an auteur or trying to cast for chemistry. They wanted a director who would follow orders and be a technician, and a cast that would appeal to the widest audiences around the world. Hell, they even had Forest Whitaker sporting an African accent because I guess they realized they didn’t have enough people born on the African continent in it to appeal to those markets.

Reticuli on March 21, 2017 at 12:54 am

I’ve watched the movie and could not help myself but notice exactly the same thing. Took a time after the movie to google why this movie is so over rated despite many issues one of which all characters have simply zero personalities, i was not excited to watch them at all something was always off like actors were forced to play the role that does not fit them.
