Gen. James Mattis Cost Marines Lives, Limbs – Refused to Reinforce Vehicles After Assigned, Promising to Do So, BUSH Pentagon Report Says

By Debbie Schlussel

trumpmattis

Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis is at fault for the loss of many Marines’ lives and limbs, according to a BUSH-era Pentagon Inspector General Report citing his neglect, negligence, and what is a clear case of dereliction of duty. He was too busy setting up sweetheart business deals for his future and pimping faulty products on the U.S. Armed Forcs. Mattis has Marine blood on his hands, and that alone should disqualify him for the job as Donald Trump’s Defense Secretary.

But you won’t read about this in most of the mainstream media and definitely not the conservative media and talk radio, where Mattis is being uniformly and unanimously lionized and beatified for sainthood . . . sainthood he doesn’t deserve. Mattis has a lot of Marine blood on his hands because he ignored orders and his own commitment to use reinforced vehicles so Marines didn’t get blown to bits, the report says. At the same time, while he could not be bothered to protect the men and women in his charge, Mattis was busy trying to force a faulty blood-testing system on the Marine Corps so he could cash in on it later.

The cult of personality surrounding Mattis, despite many disturbing incidents involving his conduct both inside and out of the military over the years, is simply disgusting. There is simply no critical thinking occurring and not much attention to good investigative reporting on about this man and who he really is (just because he gave some past occasional lip service to political incorrectness). Instead, people are raving over this guy as some kind of Patton (who actually won his war, FYI), and some sort of war hero. He is no such thing. Don’t believe the hype.

Mattis has claimed he “paid a price” in Marine lives because of America’s support for Israel. That’s BS, and I’ll address his anti-Israel comments and the whitewash of same by the whoring JINSA (which can be bought for the right price–I have inside info) in a later post. But Mattis’ extremely neglectful behavior regarding the much needed, reinforced MRAPs in Iraq is what cost many Marines their lives (and limbs), and he should have been court-martialed for it. The Marines paid a price for Mattis’ neglect. His behavior on that alone should disqualify this man for the top Pentagon job. He has Marine blood on his hands, and it’s an outrage. And it’s not me saying so: it was the BUSH Pentagon. I’m surprised and disappointed that I’ve seen this well-documented story ONLY in one mainstream media source, and that it basically died.

Retired Marine Corps general James Mattis, currently under consideration for Defense secretary by President-elect Donald Trump, oversaw a key command in 2005 that failed to field urgently needed combat vehicles to Iraq to protect Marines from roadside bombs.

A 2008 Pentagon inspector general report singled out the Marine Corps Combat Development Command, which Mattis commanded during 2005, for its role in failing to act on an urgent plea for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles to replace vulnerable Humvees. [DS: MRAPs are resistant to IEDs, whereas Humvees are not.]

The result, USA TODAY found in 2007, was a months-long delay in fielding MRAPs. Those trucks, with their V-shaped hulls that deflect bomb blasts, eventually replaced nearly every Humvee in Iraq and Afghanistan after Defense Secretary Robert Gates made them the Pentagon’s No. 1 priority. Gates did so after reading about their superior protection against roadside bombs to Humvees in USA TODAY.

Instead of acting on the plea from Marines in 2005, the command under Mattis accepted the Marine Corps commandant’s decision to replace its poorly protected Humvees with better armored ones, the inspector general determined. The request for MRAPs subsequently languished.

“In reaction, the Marine Corps Combat Development Command stopped processing (the urgent request) for MRAP-type vehicle capability in August 2005,” the inspector general found.

The inspector general’s report did not mention Mattis by name, just that he was head of the Combat Development Command at the time of the requests. Mattis, the report said, was asked in a March 29, 2005, Marine safety board meeting to review the feasibility of acquiring MRAPs, but that review was never conducted.

Command officials failed to develop a course of action for the urgent request for MRAPs, seek funding for them or appeal to another Marine Corps body to field them, the inspector general wrote. Finally, the command “did not, as it could and should have in July 2005,” request that Marine commanders take the request to the Joint Chiefs of Staff “to address an immediate and apparent joint warfighter need for an MRAP-type vehicle capability.”

Mattis said in an interview with the inspector general’s team that he directed that work continue to fulfill the urgent request, but that he did not know why the work was not performed.

Wow, aren’t you glad that Mattis was so “on top” of this? This is the same type of Defense Secretary he will be. Too busy to care about Marine’s lives and limbs. And what he was too busy doing will outrage you. I discuss that later in this post.

Pentagon officials had known long before 2005 about the Humvee’s vulnerabilities. Their flat bottoms transmitted the force of blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) buried in roads directly to the troops they carried. Military officials declared them a “death trap” in such attacks as early as 1994. By 2003, Pentagon analysts were writing to the Joint Chiefs of Staff about the superiority of MRAPs to Humvees.

One Pentagon analyst complained in an April 29, 2004, email to colleagues that it was “frustrating to see the pictures of burning Humvees while knowing that there are other vehicles out there that would provide more protection.”

Shortly after the invasion of Iraq in 2003, IEDs became the insurgents’ weapon of choice and No. 1 killer of American troops.

Yet officials in the Marines and Army resisted MRAPs, hulking, expensive vehicles. Gates changed that in 2007 and launched a $50 billion program to outfit troops in combat with the superior protection offered by MRAPs.

Mattis is declining all requests for interviews, according Marlon Bateman, a spokesman for the Hoover Institution where Mattis is a fellow.

The Marines’ urgent need request for MRAPs was submitted in February 2005. “MRAP vehicles will protect Marines, reduce casualties, increase mobility and enhance mission success,” the request read. “Without MRAP, personnel loss rates are likely to continue at their current rate.”

At a critical meeting on safety in late March 2005, Mattis heard directly from Maj. Roy McGriff III, the Marine who had drafted the request for MRAPs.

McGriff briefed the plan: Continue to armor Humvees but buy MRAPs as fast as possible and phase out Humvees. Mattis agreed and told the room of generals and lower-ranking officers, “That’s exactly what we’re going to do,” McGriff recalled in 2007.

But he never did it. He’s not a man who keeps his word, even if it means hundreds of his men will die and/or lose their limbs, get disfigured faces, etc.

But the plan, and the urgent need request, died there. By June 10, 2005, a status report on the request said the Marines were holding out for a “future vehicle,” the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle that was more nimble than the MRAP and better protected than the Humvee.

The Army doesn’t anticipate fielding its first units with the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle until 2019, the Marines a year later.

As U.S. involvement in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan wound down, the value of MRAPs became clear. In 2012, the Pentagon estimated that replacing Humvees with MRAPs saved the lives of as many as 2,000 troops.

“There is absolutely no question in my mind that thousands of troops are still alive today because they were riding in MRAPs when attacked by IEDs,” Gates said in a statement in 2012. “I have heard that firsthand from countless troops on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. Quite simply, MRAPs have saved thousands of lives and limbs.”

And how many hundreds of Marine lives and limbs were lost because of the inaction of James Mattis? We’ll never know, but you can bet it’s a lot. When I was doing my regular appearance on Larry the Cable Guy’s show on his SiriusXM channel on Friday, Larry (a/k/a Dan Whitney) remarked that General Mattis traveled to see the families of the Marines under his command who died. But that’s the least he could do, since many of them died due to his utter negligence. The man should be behind bars.

So what was “Mad Dog” Mattis busy doing that was so much more important than protecting the lives of his men? Plotting the war? Nope.

General Mattis was busy writing e-mails and having conversations trying to pimp the faulty blood testing of Theranos, a company that he soon made big money off of–joining its board just two months after leaving the Marines. I’ll get more into that in a later post, but note that while he was overseeing Marines in Iraq, he had many personal direct conversations with Theranos founder and chief Elizabeth Holmes on how to help her get the Marines to use the defective tests and how to tamp down negative info about the tests at the Pentagon. They clearly had a deal going on, since he joined Theranos’ board very quickly thereafter.

“Mad Dog” Mattis’ priorities are clear: making money off of sweetheart deals before saving American servicemen’s lives.

Um, isn’t that the insider/swamp business Donald Trump said he was going to drain? (If it isn’t, what the heck is?)

With Mattis (and several other appointments), it’s very clear: Donald Trump isn’t draining the swamp. He’s replenishing it.

James Mattis’ incompetence was bad enough when it was just the U.S. Marine Corps. Now, it will be the whole Pentagon. How many more lives of our service men and women will he cost us?

“Mad Dog” Mattis’ behavior should make you mad.

General Mattis believes that he can make Islam safe by converting them to democracy. This is ridiculous.

Thanks for digging out this horrific source material Debbie! I have not seen this information reported, as you say, anywhere. I await your article on this mans anti Israel blather, in as much as he follows the singular, moronic, non historical notion of just about everyone; be it left or right – Israel’s so called “occupation” of the Arabs in Judea being the reason for all our problems in the Middle East!
It should be entertaining and profoundly pathetic, ( if not laughable) to say the least!!

One does have to wonder who specifically is advising The Donald on all these appointments. First Betsy DeVos, now this. Jimmy Carter, in saying Trump would be “malleable” as President (as was brought up at the time on this site), may be a lot of things (all bad), but in this instance, a senile fool he ain’t. Mattis certainly sounds like a throwback to the days in the Civil War when soldiers on both sides were wearing and working with likewise shoddily-made goods (i.e. uniforms, shoes, artillery) pimped on them by fly-by-night companies, that potentially cost them life and limb, too.

Am I crazy to notice that when Trump named Mrs. DeVos and the “Mad Dog” to their respective positions, he was wearing a blue necktie? As in, “blue state”?

I was out of the Marine Corps for 13 years when I first heard of Gen Mattis and was working in Iraq as a security contractor. He changed the motto of my former division, the 1st Marine Division from “FIRST TO FIGHT” to the silly “No Greater Friend – No Worse Enemy”. I immediately disliked him. Thank you Debbie for covering this; I know about it from USMC friends of mine who served under Mattis during OIF who saw him for what he really was, a self serving phony who cared nothing for his Marines. Not only is this MRAP deal scandalous, but Mattis was so obsessed with beating the US Army to Baghdad (not part of his mission; just inter-service rivalry) that he let weapons caches go unsecured and bypassed them. These weapons were later employed by the enemy killing many soldiers and Marines. Semper Fi

And now Trump has nominated Ben Carson for HUD secretary. Aside from being a complete moron on the issues of the day, I can’t imagine any reason for Carson’s nomination for this post, save for his being black. I can sort of see him as Surgeon General, but Secretary of Housing and Urban Development? No way.

With the naming of Mattis as DoD secretary, it’s clear The Donald is out of his league, far more bluster than brains. His advisers, most of all Steve Bannon, are promoters of Red State lowbrow political culture.

Primetime on December 6, 2016 at 11:21 am

Sobering though posts like this are, it is a reminder that on many cases where the Left screeches against a nomination, it is 99.99% for all the wrong reasons. Mrs. DeVos is on the same page as the teachers’ unions on Common Core (and presumably the Islamopandering propaganda “curriculum”), for instance, yet you wouldn’t know it from Randi Weingarten’s shrill op-eds in newspapers. Same with “Mad Dog” Mattis, where the Left is mad that (as they see it) he wouldn’t continue the reckless social engineering and further castration of the military as carried out under Obama (i.e. women and LGBTQ…XYZ’s into combat).

Concerned Patriot on December 6, 2016 at 11:35 am

So much for eliminating waste and fraud from the Government like he said in his campaign. Of course we all knew that was hogwash, but to have it proven a month-and-a-half before he takes office?

Of course when he decided not to pursue any legal action against Hillary, that should have been a clue. If he excuses corruption against the biggest offender, it stands to reason that he will excuse it against the near-big as well. As always, the little ones are likely to suffer.

While some of his cabinet picks are dicsouraging, after much thought, I don’t want to write him off before he even takes office. One never knows, and he does play some of his cards very close to the vest.

Little Al on December 6, 2016 at 1:11 pm

I’m just not getting why Trump is shuffling the original hand he was dealt. When he started, people speculated that he’s have Rudy in DHS, Christie as AG, Carson for HHS or Surgeon General, Bolton for Secretary of State, and so on.

Ok, I have nothing against him having nothing for Christie, although Sessions should have gotten DHS if Rudy doesn’t want it. He has done well w/ some of the picks, like Tom Price.

But the people who’ve been suggested for secretary of state – except Bolton, none of them are foreign policy experts. If he wants to put Romney in his cabinet, this ain’t the job for it: Obama was right about Romney in that the latter lives in the 80s. Nikki Haley is totally unqualified for UN ambassador: if he wants to promote Lt Gov McMaster, he could have sent Haley to Delhi. How would CEOs of Exxon or a failed ex-CEO of HP even work? And in Fiorina’s case, she’s totally pro Islamic, and opposed to his policy on letting the Russians handle Syria. I do hope that his Secretary of State pick is not anti-Israel the way Gen Mattis is.

The other thing – instead of leaking or parading the choices in public, like it was the Apprentice, these things should be done behind closed doors in the Trump Tower. And even better, he should organize video conferences w/ whoever he wants to talk to, instead of having a parade of people in and out of that building, just feeding speculation.

Infidel on December 6, 2016 at 1:44 pm

Fret not; Twump’s confab with Algore, announced today, will set him straight.

It’ll be interesting to see how many cabinet picks and czarships will arise from this goober summit.

VFR on December 6, 2016 at 2:07 pm

One thing I forgot to mention – making Reince his chief of staff. That job should have gone to Bannon. I have nothing against Reince, but I don’t think Paul Ryan should have his guy be the top guy in the White House.

On the RNC, I’d like to see Corey Lewandowski back at the head of the party. The party needs to be purged of the RINOs, which won’t be done by an Ann Romney or a Mercedes Schlapp. It needs someone who will at grassroots level uproot anti-Trump RINOs and replace them w/ anti-Islamic activists. I’d also like to see Sherrif Joe Arpayo be given the top job at DHS

For press secretary, I’d like to see Ann Coulter get the job. Yeah, I know many of us here have reservations about her, but you need someone who can give the media the finger, and no one can do it better than her. Not Ingraham, not Conway.

Infidel on December 6, 2016 at 1:57 pm

    Infidel,
I agree Bannon should have gotten the job as Chief of Staff. The Rinsed Prius is just too cozy with Paul Ryan. I’d like to see Governor Jindal as head of the RNC. He seems capable and Either sheriffs Arpayo or Clarke as DHS head. Press secretary should go to Michelle Malkin. I think Coulter would be send the girly men in the press room running to their mommies or their editors. Not so much with Michelle. You know what on second thought you’re right. Ann would be perfect.

KB: Fraudkin??? Hilarious. Have you really been reading this site all these years? An affirmative action plagiarist thief who is largely an ignoramus and completely a shrieking, selfish, uber-narcissist fraud who had a weird pedophiliac crush on Muslim Zayn Malik? Um, yeah, that’s the ticket. NOT. Ann “F-ck the Jews” Coulter? Again, um, NO. DS

    Ken B on December 6, 2016 at 3:40 pm

Debbie that part of my post about Malkin and Coulter was meant to be tongue and cheek but it appears that my joke fell a little flat. I’ve known for years what kind of people these two are due to my own research but mainly from your hard work on this site. I know that one’s a plagiarist stalker and the other is best buds with Jew hater Pat Robertson. I still however, do think both Jindal and Clarke or Arpaio would be great RNC and DHS heads respectfully.

KB: I didn’t get that it was a joke. However, FYI, I disagree that Pat Robertson is a Jew-hater. I’ve met and spoken with him on several occasions and am very confident that he is very pro-Israel and pro-Jewish (even if he does try to convert us). He has said some stupid things about the Holocaust and so on, but I think he’s okay. DS

      Ken B on December 7, 2016 at 12:27 pm

Sorry Debbie I got my “Pats” mixed up. I meant to put Pat Buchanan and not Robertson as being friends with Coulter. Thanks for the info about Mr. Robertson as I only catch him sometimes when he’s on The 700 Club.

        Ken B on December 8, 2016 at 9:06 am

        Ken,

Debbie is clueless about PR. His supposed affection for Israel notwithstanding, he, along with other supposeded Evangelicals including Jerry Falwell,Billy Graham,John Hagee,Bailey Smith, etc have made truly anti-Semitic comments over the years. PR has written and blathered about various Jewish “conspiracies” about banking and money.

If that’s not bad enough, PR and others of his ilk have proclaimed that truly vile, corrupt Jewish anti-Semite “Rabbi” Daniel Lapin to be their Jewish spiritual adviser.

Lapin is so anti-Semitic against his fellow Jews that none other than David Duke has praised Lapin as a “righteous Jew” who speaks the truth about the evils of the Jews.

S: Um, I’m not clueless about him. But maybe you are. You definitely are about Hagee, who is a tremendous philo-Semite and friend of Israel and the Jewish people. I’ve written about the scumbag anti-Semitic Islamo-pandering con artist Lapin on this site repeatedly, which you’d know if you bothered to use the search engine or were a regular reader. No idea about Bailey Smith. Never heard of him. DS

Scott on December 11, 2016 at 3:11 am

          Debbie,

I stand by my point, you just don’t get or you’re in denial.

I don’t need to use the search engine, I’m well aware you’ve condemned Lapin in previous posts. This further bolsters my argument that PR,etc are anti-Semites.

A true philo-Semite would be repulsed by Lapin’s anti-Semitism and would want nothing to do with him. As I’ve already stated, PR and his gang admire Lapin and have proclaimed him as their “rabbi”.

In other words, in my view, it’s BECAUSE of Lapin’s anti-Semitism that PR and his gang as well as David Duke admire Lapin. When a Jew spouts anti-Semitism, it’s sweet music to the ears of anti-Semites who use the Lapins of the world as “proof” that their anti-Semitic garbage is true.

Philo-Semite Hagee has terrible comments about the Holocaust which he sort of did and sort of didn’t apologize for. He’s made numerous conspiratorial claims about the Rothchilds leading a conspiracy to take over the world’s money supply (PR has made similar claims). He claims the anti-christ will be a “Jewish half breed” like Hitler was, etc, etc, etc.

Like his fellow gang members, his alleged affection for Israel is strictly related to his religious theory of a 2nd coming, not because of any love of Jewish people.

Support for Israel is not a get-out-of-jail-free card against claims of anti-Semitism.

It’s truly sad and appalling that due to world-wide anti-Semitism and the geo-politics of oil, Israel has so few friends in the world, and must rely on the likes of those clowns for support.

Scott on December 12, 2016 at 2:33 am

          Scott,
You’re incorrect. The Christian Evangelical community has been strongly supportive of Israel and Judaism. However, the Jews that have been supporting the Left are a real problem for Jews and for Israel, and likes of the Jill Steins and the Bernie Sanders exemplify that. Fortunately, some of the more influential Leftist leading billionaire Jews, like Haim Saban, who gave about $12 million to Hillary Clinton’s campaign, have been coming out on the offensive against anti-Israel Judeophobe Keith Ellison. He even got the Leftist ADL to reverse its position on Ellison.

As for David Duke, he will latch onto anything that he thinks will even remotely give him some credibility, like a leech, in an attempt to promote himself.

Yes, many Christian leaders from the Evangelical community have said some dumb things in the past. But their commitment to Israel and support for Jews is unquestionable, as will be readily apparent if you would take the time to look into their many programs in support of Israel and Jews.

Not for nothing have the Leftists and the real Judeophobes recently made strong efforts to try to drive a wedge between the Jewish community and the Christian Evangelical community.

Here’s a relatively recent article on Pastor John Hagee:

One big difference between Ryan and Reince — Ryan supported Hillary and Reince pulled out all stops for Trump to succeed. This was one of the picks I supported, since Reince proved his loyalty to Trump under fire.

I was also a little surprised to see the hostility against Carson. His IQ is probably at least 20 points higher than those of his detractors, and he has had intimate experience with the inner cities all his life.

Trump met with Al Gore. I’ve got a bad feeling about that.

CornCoLeo on December 6, 2016 at 7:17 pm

Little Al, I happen to like Reince for precisely that reason: that he stood by Trump even though there was a lot of pressure on him from the establishment to do a Bob Dole on him. I however don’t like the idea of a Ryan choice getting that spot.

KenB, Michelle Malkin, as Debbie has pointed out, is very soft on Islam – having lionized guys like Zain Malik. Since the inner staff is generally pretty good about opposing Islam, Malkin wouldn’t be a good fit there.

I: You have too much faith in Trump when you claim his “inner staff” is generally pretty good about opposing Islam. Based on what? In fact, they’re the ones who recommended he backtrack on waterboarding terrorists and having a Muslim ban, so how is this “generally pretty good” in any way, shape, or form? Fraudkin is a plagiarist thief, complete ignoramus, and total hack with zero ethics and even fewer skills. She would be a great fit in a dumpster. That’s about it. Her weird pedophiliac crush on and defense of Zayn Malik’s Muslim extremism is just the tip of that lowlife iceberg. Mattis is a “fake hand-off”. Don’t waste too much time on him. He won’t get the nomination.

Spend too much time on Mattis and Trump will slip someone you REALLY don’t like through the system. The Mattis nomination is a deliberate attempt to distract our attention; just like a half hand-off in football.

The Sec. of Defense has traditionally been held by civilians; not flag officers (competent or otherwise). Trump wants you and everyone else to hem and haw over this selection so we don’t notice some other clod he’s going to nominate.

Didn’t you girls play football when you were in High School? 🙂

TINSC, I can’t agree that Mattis won’t “get the nod.” The odds, unfortunately, favor him. The RINOs think he’s great and the Democrats adore him because he thinks and talks just like they do (or would like to do), and for exactly the reasons that Debbie opposes him. From a policy standpoint, he’s like John Kerry or even worse.

Ralph Adamo on December 7, 2016 at 6:04 pm

      Ralph:

The Secretary of Defense shall be a civilian. Period! The law prevents Mattis from serving. History prevents him from serving.

Since WWII, only one exception was ever made: George C. Marshall. This guy is no George C. Marshall!

When Marshall was appointed Sec. of Defense in 1950, Congress had to pass a special law over-riding the restrictions placed on commissioned officers (in the Regular Armed Forces; not the Reserves0 from serving within 10 years of retirement. (This restriction has now been reduced to 7 years, but the general practice is more like “never”).

The Secretary of Defense is not supposed to be a civilian. It’s not only an unwritten law from the founding of the Republic. It is the law. Chances are slim Mattis will be our next Defense Secretary.

Trump either made a bad choice or he is deliberately distracting us from something else in the appointment process.

Frankly, I’m more concerned about Keith Ellison becoming Chairman of the DNC. The mere fact that the DNC is considering him should tell you something.

      Sincerely,

There is NO Santa Claus on December 7, 2016 at 9:18 pm

        TINSC,
There’s plenty to be concerned about. So much so, that there’s no need to prioritize. As for Mattis’s appointment, yes, he needs a waiver. But there’s so much support in the Establishment for him, that the waiver will turn out to be a mere formality. I wish it were otherwise, but I find it difficult to imagine a serious inquiry of Mattis’s record covering any of the issues Debbie has raised–or will raise in future articles on him.

Ralph Adamo on December 8, 2016 at 2:16 am

As a Marine who was in Iraq and Afghanistan, though I never worked for Gen. Mattis, I can appreciate the reluctance to buy incredibly expensive, heavy vehicles to mask the incompetent war strategy by the commander in chief.

It’s easy to snipe at people without even knowing what their reasoning is. Mattis is not insane. He had reasons for his actions. You are welcome to disagree with his conclusions, but you shouldn’t dismiss them as being incompetent or evil.

Marines are supposed to be offensive and shock troops. These vehicles are incredibly big, can’t go a lot of places because they’re too heavy, have a dramatic impact on our deployability, and really don’t address the real problem.

The real problem is that we were too spread out, not allowed to bring the fight to the enemy, and were more concerned with politics than with winning a war.

I’ve been in all kinds of vehicles. The MRAP and the MATV are just ridiculously big and expensive. I don’t agree that increased protective measures is the best way to win a war. It’s the best way to sit and wait for politicians to quit a war but it’s not effective at winning a war.

I also don’t agree with the ridiculous body armor we were forced to wear all the time. Have you ever tried to run in that heavy gear? The enemy could run (literally) circles around us. I would gladly give up the illusion of safety for the ability to run faster so my men could chase the enemy down and kill them quicker.

The best way to protect your Marines is to make them more effective at killing the enemy. General Mattis was right to derail the MRAP.

S: In fact, he had no reasons. He said he would do it and was ordered to (he disobeyed orders and was derelict in his duty) and just never did because he was too busy concentrating on setting up his post-military business opportunities, such as his constant work on behalf of Theranos, which was totally unethical. You may think MRAPs are heavy or slow, but in fact they saved thousands of lives and limbs. You can’t have it both ways. The Marines were begging for MRAPs. Clearly, you are in the minority. And, BTW, nice try at an insult (which was deleted/edited out). DS

Skyler on December 6, 2016 at 11:55 pm

So, despite your portrayal that his behavior was outrageous, there is a different opinion that you claim is a minority opinion. I don’t remember polls being taken on the issue, but I could accept perhaps my view is closer to 49% than to 51%. A commander doesn’t take votes. He is supposed to accomplish a mission. How he does it is his decision. Congress commissioned him to act or not act, to purchase hardware or not. He justification for his decisions was reasonable, even if you disagree.

I think if you poll Marines, you’ll find closer to 95% really admire the man despite your claimed flaws. There are no perfect men. He’s about as close to the ideal I would hope all general officers aspire to. I think history will bear this out. Time will tell.

Skyler on December 8, 2016 at 12:33 am

Skyler, if Mattis is the military “ideal,” then John Kerry is the civilian “ideal.” Mattis thought that Kerry did a fabulous job, and, in fact, Mattis will probably consult with Kerry to get the inside take on how to best imitate him. Trump should have just asked Kerry to stay on instead of pretending that he was implementing his version of “change you can believe in.”

Ralph Adamo on December 8, 2016 at 2:28 am

I agree with Skyler’s take on this. I commanded advisor units spread around Iraq and got to travel in Hummers, Blackhawks, Hueys, Hinds, Cessnas, C-130s, pick-up trucks and the “Rhino.” Discounting Skyler’s disdain for the strategy, occupying a country the size (and psychosis /sarc) of California requires mobility. The MRAPs were late to the party, expensive, and only useful for convoy operations. Further, when the MRAP production rate swung to full-rate, the airlift system’s capacity was severely overburdened and subsequent contracts to Volga Dnepr ran in the $10s of millions. Your decade-late observation, “he had no reasons,” is specious at best. Senior leaders make decisions and those are based upon current knowledge. While I can neither support nor defend his nomination as the next SecDef, belittling his record on MRAP funding, production and fielding is a road laden with mines.

Mattis is a real Jew hater who praises Jew hater John Kerry’s take on Israel, more in that vein. He also supports Muslim immigration to America. The Trumpkins in the conservative media including Frontpage have gone all ga ga over Mattis because he “talks tough”. Even though he is just a clueless dhimmi.

L: Longtime readers know that Frontpage has NEVER had a clue. They also praised and lionized open HAMAS supporter and Jew-hater Robert Novak and other Muslims. David Horowitz attacked George Zimmerman and said that Treyvon Martin was a “fine young man.” Daniel Greenfield repeatedly trolls this site and I’ve caught him ripping me off. He admitted to stealing at least 10 of my posts. They suck. WHY are you reading that piece of crap site? DS

Lawrence on December 7, 2016 at 8:32 am

There’s always been something about Daniel Greenfield, aka “Sultan Knish,” that struck me as creepy. Now I know.

Primetime on December 7, 2016 at 12:52 pm

Wanted to add: Trump cannot be trusted, too willfully clueless and self-absorbed. Watch him do nothing on Muslim immigration. Talks tough, it got him elected. Now time to screw his supporters over. Hope I am wrong but that is how it looks from here.

Lawrence on December 7, 2016 at 8:36 am

Yeah, America’s support for Israel definitely isn’t one of the main causes of Arab and Muslim hatred of America. Our support for Israel has actually helped to improve our relations with the other countries in the region. Supporting Israel also provides America with all kinds of benefits. I won’t bother with listing any of those benefits though because there’s just way too many to count.

MuslimsControlTheMedia on December 7, 2016 at 11:13 am

Excellent work, Debbie. Investigative journalists are nearly gone. You are in a class by yourself and a treasure!

NancyB on December 7, 2016 at 11:52 am

Trump just selected Marine Corps General John Kelly as DHS Secretary.

Great column! I think last week Mike Church reminded his listeners (I am currently a “Bernie Sanders” listener to his show…I only say that because I think that label for free-loaders like me is very LOL…and true! Anyway, I explained this because I find the label very funny but that is indeed what I am…but will be paying for the privilege soon! Promise! LOLOL!) not to just knee-jerk wave their flags and start saying YAY!! He reminded us to research on “Mad Dog”…and he was right.

THIS SITE is where I learned how to do that…which is why I am glad I did NOT fall on the CW bandwagon…plus the stuff I have been mired in since June 2014 has taught me DEFINITIVELY that you MUST do your homework and FACT CHECK. The truth is not always what you think it is.

DS helps remind us we must never forget to continue to do so. Facts matter. Even if it is someone on our so-called political side. We gotta know the facts. I appreciate that and this place is where I learned so many years ago that you MUST do your due diligence. Thanks DS!

Skunky on December 7, 2016 at 6:20 pm

I noticed there was some speculation about his nickname, “Mad Dog.”

Y’know, it COULD be that nobody has ever seen General Mattis and Christopher Russo in the same place at the same time. Kind of like Andy Kaufman and Tony Clifton.

Just a thought.

Libbies are ridiculously paranoid. Reading their nonsense on Twitter they. either want to stop Donald before inauguration, somehow prove he is illegitimately the president, destroy the electoral college, whining about pop vote but they fail to realize the amount she won by is approx the amount she won Cali by. Dumb dumbs. So it doesn’t rep the country.

Then they are absolutely paranoid about Russia. I’m lost, how come they aren’t paranoid that we sold them a ton of Uranium? im trying to fig out what has Trump done? Also don’t we want a good relationship with Russia, or no? I’m totally lost on this issue.

MrBigBrain on December 11, 2016 at 2:25 am

Y’know, if only his name was General Matisse.

Then, . . .

it could be said that he is an expert at . . .

the ART of war.

ROTFLMAO!!! Okay, hold the tomatoes, please, I don’t want my clothes permanently stained. Eggs are fine, they’ll come out in the wash, and I eat a lot of eggs anyway.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on December 11, 2016 at 12:29 pm

Love this site. I’m responding to someone who was asking about the Russian infiltration and how it works. This is the one issue that’s so big, it seems like reporters are shying away from it. I personally can’t wait to see DS slay this topic, as we need someone like her to do a true accounting of something that my father, a Reagan-loving man from the way back, could not conceive happening today.

I will say this – it’s terrifying. And pervasive. Russia has been hacking not just sites to turn the tides of mega-powers Putin would prefer be run by people he can ‘manage’, but also, he runs campaigns through his Russia Today (RT) network, is friends with people like Manafort, and hires thousands of paid trolls who whip up whole groups of people into throwing in with people who aren’t in their best interests. (I saw an interview with three paid trolls who were hired out of Eastern European countries – one had like 12 IDs on Breitbart, not sure about the others). Got to give it to Putin in one regard – he knows how to run hate. Debbie, we’ve never needed you more.

    Agnes M. on December 12, 2016 at 9:26 pm

I guess my question is, If America can sell Uranium to Russia and tons of it, how worried are they really worried about them. How come the fact that Donald plans on working with them worse than Hillary selling Uranium. Isn’t Uranium used for bomb making?

MrBigBrain on December 13, 2016 at 2:00 am

Apples and oranges. No, more like apples and crocodiles. Putin hacked into both parties’ documents and plans, which sounds, on the face of it, simply that he was just helping Trump. (And which did help him get elected.) But now that he’s gained the presidential role, Trump should be very concerned that they know his people, his style, and his gamebook. Why he was invested in putting Trump in power, we don’t yet know, but had this happened when Reagan was in office….let’s just say the times might have changed but not the intentions. President Reagan would have never stood for such, God bless his soul.

    Agnes M. on December 13, 2016 at 2:38 pm

Thank you, Debbie, for doing the heavy lifting and putting your findings and insights before the public. A prophet is never popular in his own country, but hopefully a chosen few will get the message and work at least to mitigate the harm. (It is clear that some very senior people are watching this site.)

As you imply, Trump’s nomination of “tough military men” for key cabinet will most likely turn out to be a major mistake. The “ruthless military man sweeping ruthlessly cleaning up the mess left by effete pantywaist civilians” is a pop culture trope.

In reality, to become a flag officer requires precisely the “political skills” that everyone detests in senior civilian government functionaries: ignoring UNPOPULAR PROBLEMS, supporting incompetent and corrupt superiors and colleagues, feathering one’s own nest (and helping others to feather theirs), etc.

Would love to be proved wrong and to at least see some real attempts to clean out the Augean stables in DC and nationwide, but not holding my breath.

Trump will inevitably disappoint many of those who voted for him, for a broad range of reasons, but at least it does not seem that he positively hates the country and will work to destroy it. We must be grateful for small mercies.

We have dodged a huge bullet (hopefully) by keeping out Hillary and her bizarre cabal. Hillary has always been a doctrinaire, boundlessly ambitious B student driven by Alinskyite zeal.

Hillary would almost certainly have started a hot war with Russia, destroyed (Europeanized) our entire legal system, and flooded the country with Muslims as cat’s-paws to undermine the traditional working class and make the country ripe for totalitarian elite rule, a la Merkel.

Guardian Angel on December 15, 2016 at 9:22 am

You know what is rich. Really rich. CNN giving Donald crap because his cabinet is White, but CNN is being sued by 30 Blacks for discrimination. Class action suit, with 3yrs of monitoring and evidence. Ha ha. CNN is beyond fraudulent.

MrBigBrain on December 15, 2016 at 7:59 pm

Good that the post by “Estelle Sherman” was removed, means Debbie’s around here. I was going to jump on that yesterday, but didn’t have the time. It also seems that the trolls don’t like to play as much as they used to.

Too bad, I’ve got a few fun things for the next group that attacks here. But sometimes these random trolls attack a thread that’s pretty much expired in terms of core members having exhausted relevant commentary. They’re pretty dumb in doing so because not many are looking in at that point, but it ruins articles for the archives.

Looks bad when comments on an article five years old have stupid stuff throughout the commentary. C’mon trolls, get hip, keep your attacks current, LOL!!! I should have time for play this weekend if y’all are around. Be afraid, be very afraid. ROTFLMAO!!!

Hmmmmmmmm, maybe that was Richard Sherman instead of Estelle, still mad that Debbie doesn’t think he’s as smart as the PC world does. He’s been a bit . . . volatile lately.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on December 21, 2016 at 9:39 am

I have to hand it to you, you really do your homework. I am beginning to regret that vote. 🙁

Pat in Michigan on December 22, 2016 at 12:13 am

Now we see that not only is Mattis “too busy” to care about Marines’ lives and limbs as Debbie noted, he’s also likewise “too busy” in terms of the current drive by Obama-holdover radical social engineers to foist “transgenders” onto women in showers. That plus the particular influence of the First Daughter and First Son-in-Law . . .
