Weekend Box Office: Manchester By the Sea (America, Hillary-Style)

By Debbie Schlussel

manchesterbythesea

I took off the last week or so for Thanksgiving and some good stuff I plan to announce soon. As for movies, I’ll try to put up my review of recent past movies. The only new one this weekend is “Manchester by the Sea.”

This movie is a dog (with apologies to canines for the comparison with this tripe-on-film). We’re taking Gitmo torture material . . . though I’m not sure we can torture anymore because Trump’s James “Mad Dog” Mattis says we can’t torture terrorists.

Most movie critics are raving and gushing over this piece of crap (and heaping the awards on it) because it’s an anti-American, pretentious, tragic bore. And they eat up that stuff. When it’s not incredibly long, slow, boring, and the cure for insomnia, this movie is incredibly miserable and dreadful. If you don’t like that kind of stuff, most film critics dismiss you as a simpleton and not sophisticated enough. The movie critic emperors wear no clothes.

This film is a Hillary-Clinton-style attack on working-class American life (and, frankly, all American life). The movie basically says that the working class in America have horrible lives filled with tragedy, boredom, poverty, drudgery, and mishaps. It all sucks and is completely hopeless, the filmmakers want you to know. Yeah, that’s the ticket, Hollywood . . . to selling fewer tickets. Anybody who reads my review and then pays to see this anyway is a glutton for punishment. You would have more fun literally flushing the ten-bucks-plus you’d have paid to see this, down the toilet. Oh, and it stars the poor man’s Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck (although I would argue that Ben Affleck is also the poor man’s Ben Affleck).

The story: Affleck is a janitor in Massachusetts. He is the maintenance man at an apartment complex and is miserable. All of the women come on to him (why is not apparent–he ain’t all that). And, then, he gets a call that his older brother (Kyle Chandler) is dead. His brother had a heart condition (or something–I was so bored an annoyed by this excuse for a movie that I didn’t care enough to pay much attention). And his brother had a will making Affleck the guardian of his brother’s son a/k/a his nephew. The nephew is a sleazy jerk of a high school student who is sleeping around with several female students. The nephew is also disrespectful to everyone, including his hockey coach whom he attacked and swore at.

Affleck doesn’t want to be his nephew’s guardian. He’s selfish. He doesn’t want to change and upend his life and he doesn’t want to move to Manchester By The Sea, the Massachusetts town where his brother lived and where his nephew lives. He’s divorced and, we later learn, was befallen by a great tragedy involving his children–a tragedy of his own accidental making. His nephew’s mother cannot be found or reached for most of the movie. Then, she is reached, and we find out she is now a devout Christian–something the movie mocks intensely, because that’s what Hollywood does to Christians (but never Muslims).

On top of that, the movie is filled with annoying, distracting flashbacks–more than enough to give you a headache.

This movie was incredibly grey (not fifty shades of it, just one–which is more than enough) and depressing and a totally pointless waste of time. It’s like a bad reality show of someone’s awful life. Why would you want to pay to go see that when you can see it every day on the streets and other locales of America?

Like I said, this is the stuff of high-quality Gitmo torture material (plus it fulfills their view of America as a miserable place and American life as something to be condemned–so it might make a great ISIS recruitment video). I’d show it to the Muslim terrorists over and over again. They’d beg for mercy pretty quickly.

This is garbage.

Why do lefties love these boring, depressing movies so much? I used to date a guy who was a knee-jerk Democrat and he loved to stay up all night and watch Ingmar Bergman films about couples who hate each other and people who commit suicide, etc. He would mock me because I thought these movies were crap, and prefer movies that are entertaining. He said I wasn?t intelligent enough to understand what Bergman was trying to say about “the human condition.” I told him that I wasn’t depressed enough to find those movies entertaining or uplifting, and I left.

MIG: Smart girl. That guy is the typical, unduly smug and arrogant, condescending moron. Sounds like most of the movie critics I know, who look down on me because I don’t BS myself and rave over the “magic” of this total crap. DS

I’ve got to strongly disagree with your ideas about movies. There are many forms to film entertainment and to cinematic works of art. True, people like uplifting movies and enjoy escapist entertainment, some more than others. But for me, just as I don’t want a diet of only candy and carbs, which taste good, I don’t want my movies to be all sweetness and light either. Rather, more often than not, I want my movies to be emotionally and intellectually nutrient dense, if you catch my metaphor.

I am no Democrat or Lefty by any stretch, but I think Ingmar Bergman is ranks as one of the great directors, particularly his earlier works like Wild Strawberries and The Magician. Bergman came from a film era in which some stellar filmmakers had their own unique style and vision, such as Fellini, Kurosawa, Truffaut, Hitchcock, Bunuel, among other greats.

Granted, movies from these directors are not for everyone, and I would never force my broad and eclectic tastes in art on someone who isn’t receptive to it.

I also happen to think Laurel and Hardy are one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, but I’m well aware that many people, women in particular, don’t find them as funny as men do.

On the other hand, I’ve known some guys that can’t sit through a movie unless there are lots of explosions, gun blasts, and gratuitous violence.

So, I think it’s a mistake to assume that “Democrats” or “Lefties” like “boring” movies. In fact, I’ve seen some Democrats/Lefties pretend to like Bergman just so they can appear to be part of the intellectual cognoscenti.

For another look at this issue of politics and so-called “boring” or “depressing” movies, consider the late critics Siskel and Ebert, which were an interesting team because they would frequently disagree on films as works of dramatic art, as well as entertainment. I recall each selecting their best picture the year, and Siskel picked a film called Shoana and Ebert picked The Color Purple. I had already seen both movies so I was intrigued about why they picked the films they did. I don’t know if you’ve seen these films, but Shoana is a very long, slow, serious, and frequently depressing movie dealing with the Holocaust in Poland. But it is also a powerful work of art. On the other hand, The Color Purple is a conventional Hollywood movie, made to be “entertaining,” while appearing to be “artistic.” But the Leftist movie of these two is not Shona, but The Color Purple, and if you know Ebert as I knew him, you know he veers “Left.”

RA: Nothing wrong with a sad or even “dark” movie if there is a point to it or it is entertaining and makes you feel something. My objection to these miserable, dark, anti-American pieces of garbage is just that: they are miserable, dark, anti-American, and pieces of garbage, in addition to being pointless and boring wastes of time. And, of course, not the least bit entertaining. And I think that was MIGirl’s point. These movies today are not even close to being in the same category as those by Ingmar Bergman who was a master, as well as the other greats you mention. There are few (or more accurately, none) like them today. DS

      Got it. Thanks, Deb.

Speaking of Hollywood and the anti-America crowd, one of the side benefits of this election that I was looking forward to was the prospect that so many of them would live up to their promises and would move to Canada or overseas if Trump won.

Oh well, it was a nice thought anyway.

On the bright side they did show Massachusetts as being a boring little hell-hole.
Liberals have been in charge there since forever. If liberalism worked then Massachusetts should be a paradise by now.

To piggy-back on Steve G’s comment (which is spot-on, BTW…)…the area the film takes place here has a nickname…”Manch-Vegas”…that should tell you how Libtards feel about the placed deemed very White Trashy.

Libtards are an odious lot. All the things they supposedly love and defend…single-parenthood, hooking up with losers and having kids with them, pre-marital sex, poverty & welfare, living like a slug. public schools…they REALLY hate…but they give lip-service to this type of crap living to use the dopes who live like that for their own (the Libtard, that is…) power grab.

So as Steve G. said…if Libtardism was so fabulous, this MoonBatty State would be the best one in the Union. It ain’t. It’s a ridiculous, border-less insane asylum…full of fools who are Libtards or who live like fools and think Libtards love them!

I totally agree with Debbie’s assessment of the movies. I saw “Arrival” today and did not want to as I remember Debbie’s review. She said it was boring and it was so boring I dozed off several times. I could not wait for it to end. No more movies for me.

Ralph, that’s what I don’t get. They all promised to leave the country, Cher even promised to go to Jupiter. NASA should put together a (wo)maned mission to Jupiter, or maybe one of its moons, and put Cher on that.

The ironic thing – why do these people want to migrate to Canada, or UK, or those countries? A lot of them are pals of the Castros – why not just go to Cuba? Or Venezuela? Similarly, a lot of them are Islam sympathizers. Palestina Jolie should move to Gaza. Since they think that Leftism and Islam are so great, they should move to real Leftist and islamic countries.

I’ve stopped watching movies for years – just do it once in a blue moon, and the most recent one I watched was the Halloween movie that was out recently. Similarly, I don’t have a TV at home: I have Sirius XM in my car radio, and also listen to it live on my iPad. One thing good about all this negativity is that I’ve avoided spending thousands of $$$ on things like a TV or monthly cable/satellite subscriptions, and just watch things on YouTube

On the plus side, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 released their trailer (with Baby Groot), and it looks fun

The moment I saw advertising for this movie on Facebook I knew it is a material that would not sell too much tickets in the regular cinemas. Which means it has to be a piece of garbage suited for limited release only.

You are completely and totally right. The movie is long, boring and devoid of a plot. I didn’t like the main character or the teenage kid. I didn’t care about them. I wanted to punch Affleck’s character in the face. I felt no sympathy for his one dimensional cardboard portrayal. I thought Michelle Williams’ talent was wasted in the movie. The film is a total downer, and when it was over (the last scene), a woman in the audience yelled out. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” It just ends, although not quickly enough. Save your money. This thing is a dud from beginning to end.
