Great! I enjoyed that video. I am black and can swim. During the JIM CROW era, in the South blacks went to the creek
or ponds on their land and we had a ball. Urban or city ones didnt have the swim and they are the ones who are angry. They should have stayed in the South! smile

I am part black and I can verify that “we” are not as buoyant. In junior high despite being small I was probably in the top 10% in running ability. Yet during swim class I was at the bottom along with a few other black kids who were bussed into my school.

That barbershop clip was hilarious, and the subject of Black folks and swimming will always provide some interesting feedback! Ironically, I just went to the barbershop this morning! The ongoing topic of discussion was health care reform and as you can imagine, it was pretty lively! Those town hall meetings don’t having anything on the “spirited” discussions that go on in Black barbershops!

As a swimming instructor I get frustrated with parents who project their fears of water onto their children. To me, this seems especially prevalent among African-American parents. White parents will warn their kids about the dangers of water but they won’t usually scare their kids to death about those dangers.
