Mayweather Jr. v. Pacquiao: Who Are You Rooting For? Who’s Gonna Win? Do You Care?

By Debbie Schlussel

Yes, I know the grammatically correct way of saying it is, for whom are you rooting? So, tomorrow night is the big boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. Who do you think will win? Who do you want to win the fight? Do you care? Why or why not? Here’s my take, since many have asked . . . .

I’ve lamented the death of boxing on this site several times. Although I often wince like the girl that I am each time a boxer’s punch hits his opponent’s flesh, I do like watching a good fight. I think the decline of boxing has in many ways correlated with the increase in America’s softness, the Bruce Jennerization of America. But, as Mark Twain might say, maybe I exaggerated the reports of boxing’s death. I thought MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) had eclipsed it for now, but I guess I was, at least temporarily, wrong.

Tomorrow night’s fight has generated more interest and more buzz than any boxing event in years, probably decades. And why? Neither fighter is that glamorous. Neither one is a showman like Thomas Hearns and George Foreman were in yesteryear.

Mayweather has been convicted of domestic violence five times in the last 14 years. But he’s the highest-paid athlete in America, maybe the world. He has a boxer’s swagger, but it’s just not entertaining. I can’t remember anything cute or memorable he’s said. But I do remember the frightening (and Muslim) Mike Tyson saying he would eat a boxer’s children, then eating Ear of Evander (Holyfield) and Leg of Lennox (Lewis). Not that we need a repeat of any of that.

I like Manny Pacquiao’s devout Christianity (he was born Catholic and became an Evanglical Christian) and record of charity to so many poor people in his native Philippines and elsewhere. He’s very generous and very humble. There’s little swagger there, despite his status as a Filipino politician and a singer. Oh, and did I mention that Pacquiao endorsed both Harry Reid and Governor Moonbeam a/k/a Jerry Brown? (Thanks to reader There Is No Santa Claus for the tip.) That’s a turn-off. Why would a born-again Christian support two of the pallbearers of the coffin of traditional social values and family in America? It doesn’t make sense, whether or not Reid (who thankfully is retiring) is a boxing fan and promoter.

Still, I like Pacquiao better because he’s the underdog and looks to me like “the little guy,” and so I’m rooting for him. I think he may get clobbered by Mayweather, though. It isn’t just women Mayweather can beat. He’s undefeated against all men and girlfriend/babymamas he’s ever fought.

Will I go see the fight? I’m not sure, but probably not. The Jewish Sabbath ends just as the fight is scheduled to begin, and I don’t think I want to pay big bucks toward either of these guys in the fees that movie theaters and bars are charging to see it (I don’t have cable but wouldn’t pay the pay-per-view fee either, if I did).

I don’t care much about it. It’s just interesting to see that this fight has people talking about boxing again the way they haven’t in America in a long time. And it’s fun to watch a good fight where the competition is tough and well-matched. This fight, given the ages of the boxers, should probably have happened about five years ago, though.

So, in Pacqiuao V. Mayweather, who are you rooting for and why? Who’s gonna win and why? Do you care? Why?

I, for one, am glad that boxing is back (for now).

Don’t care. Boxing is a dead sport in my eyes since MMA.

I don’t have a particular interest in this fight, but I appreciate that the bout has generated considerable enthusiasm among fight fans. At the end of the day, I believe that Mayweather will prevail over Pacquiao–though I expect it to be close. Then, of course, there will be the inevitable rematch.

Hopefully, it will not be a one-sided bout. But, I would not pay that kind of money to see the fight, no matter what the outcome was.

I’m rooting for Pacquiao. As you’ve stated above he’s far less of a jerk than Mayweather. He’s left wing, but he does still have redeeming qualities.

Not so confident that he’ll win though. Mayweather gets any decision that he wants in Vegas. I still think Castillo beat him in their first fight, but he didn’t get the decision. The sport has always been somewhat crooked like that, but certainly ramped up in the last 20-30 years or so.

Most of all as far as the death of boxing I lament the loss of prestige of the Heavyweight division and championship. These two Welters have by far the most hyped and prestigious fight in years. Meanwhile the Heavyweight Champion of the World fought last week. It was on regular HBO, not $100 PPV and nobody paid attention. Maybe it’s because we haven’t had an American champion in a while. Or maybe it’s because the announcers like to hype the jerks and the controversy and the recent Heavyweight champs haven’t been those types of guys. Don’t know but whatever the cause it’s another strong masculine tradition that we’ve had for decades, now gone well down the tubes in this nation of girly-men and crazy feminists.

I’m antithetical to boxing, I’m more of a pro-wrestling fan (TNA Wrestling); but I think Mayweather will win the match tomorrow due to his in-ring experience and superior “win-lost” record. Pacquio is capable of winning the match tomorrow night, it can go either way DS!

If it is close, Mayweather will get the decision. There are already riots over sports events, and given the current volatility, the officials will be afraid to give a close one to Pacquiao.”

Pacquiao’s support of Harry Reid? Probably has more to do with Las Vegas’ importance as a boxing center than anything else. A savvy marketing decision.

For what it’s worth, Mayweather is the same guy who broke up with his girlfriend / fiancĂ©e Shantel Jackson about a year ago after she had, as he put it, “murdered” their unborn twin babies in an abortion (and the always odious, always despicable Gloria Allred sued him after he published the sonograms). Whether this is a factor in who to root for, however, is another matter altogether.

I am rooting for Pac Man. Yet the fight would have been much more interesting in their prime. Say five years ago. Too bad they coukd never come to an agreement to pull it off back then.

I recognize that Floyd Mayweather will probably beat Manny Pacquiao but I have to favor Manny because I can’t bring myself to favor a shameless egocentric wife beater. Manny is a considerate, kind, and generous boxer, full of love for his fellow man. I sincerely hope Manny wins!

Donald Gilleland on May 2, 2015 at 10:47 am

I’m rooting for whoever beat Harry Reid like a drum.

Drafted in 1969. I joined the Navy. I was too scared to go into the Army. I am ashamed. That said, I had 24 fights (They called them “Smokers”) in the Navy. I was about 50/50. The toughest guy I ever faced, was a counter puncher, who fought in the Silver Mittens. Seriously, the Silver Mittens. He was in “Supply”, a cook. Cool guy actually.

I am now and always have been, a violent, red blooded son of the American Empire.

I am ok with bloody constraint, but, I can’t watch it anymore. I hate seeing anyone get hurt, unless they deserve it. Violence for money disgusts me.

I am old.

chuck lowe on May 2, 2015 at 1:06 pm

Mike Tyson (Muslim) there is a disconnect right there. You know Mike Tyson and people like Kareem Abdul Jabbar etc, are no threat. Pointing that out, why?

MrBigBrain on May 2, 2015 at 4:22 pm

Rooting for Pacquiao.
Boxing is fixed.
Mayweather will win.
No matter what, the mafia clowns that run the sport will give the decision to their money man, end of story.

theShadow on May 2, 2015 at 7:13 pm

I am in Pacman’s corner.

mbm on May 2, 2015 at 7:42 pm

Money won. Pac-man is the better man, however.

Occam's Tool on May 3, 2015 at 9:58 pm

Like you, I did not watch the fight. I care not to give my wife to a serial woman beater.

I like amateur boxing; especially Golden Gloves. Outside of that, boxing is pretty much politics and corruption.

Think about it! The NFL couldn’t let Ray Rice go without response. NASCAR couldn’t let Kurt Busch go without response even thought Busch was found innocent. There are not sanctioning bodies in pro boxing. If HBO and Showtime can bake a boatload of money, the fight goes on without scrutiny of the boxers’ integrity.

If you want to watch good boxing and grownups mentoring young kids, I highly recommend Golden Gloves. It may be amateur, but it’s fun.

Sincerely,

Kanye says Beyonce should have won!

Jim on May 6, 2015 at 1:23 pm

This Debbie is clueless about southeast asians, most southeast races behave like Manny regardless of whether they are muslim or christian or animist, etc… Its just their demeanor (Read Sir Alfred Russell Wallace to understand more). But dont mistake their lack of swagger for being humble!! I suspect Debbie isnt gonna respond to me as usual. But, AGAIN, this is AVERAGE southeast Asian demeanor. She should read Alfreds book “The Malay Archipelago”, which I suspect she hasn’t, and how he divides the races into 2 groups: Papuan-like races and Malay-like races. He (Alfred) is a friend of Charles Darwin, and Darwin at one point was accused of stealing scientific material from him.
