Free Papa John’s Pizza Today . . . If You Drive a Camaro

By Debbie Schlussel

As readers know, I like to give you the info on free stuff, even if it’s not necessarily kosher stuff I would eat.

For my gentile readers, Papa John’s has an interesting promotion, giving away free pizza today for owners of Chevy Camaro cars (or you can borrow one for a friend).  Our friend, reader/blogger/Vietnam vet Robert John Mallernee, has the details.

While Papa John founder John Schnatter’s  1971 Chevy Camaro Z28 is a very cool car, I personally think $250,000 is a ridiculous price for it and an incredible waste of money.  But it’s his money.

And the story behind it is a great story and a very smart marketing promotion.

Pizza isn’t kosher, even without meat? Just wondering.

F: Pizza is kosher without meat. But Papa John’s is not a kosher restaurant. DS

Debbie, when I want to order pizza with non-Jews they think I should be willing to get a pizza with “half meat”. I insist that the meat on their half would ruin my half. You have to draw the line somewhere.

I am an atheist Jew who grew up in an Orthodox Canadian family. In Canada they have a much higher orthodox percentage. You can not mix meat and dairy and the rear half of a cow would not be considered kosher.
I guess if you have soy substitute for cheeses you can make a kosher pizza but it has to go through a careful rabbinical inspection to pass.

Greets- I am an Orthodox Jew who grew up in an Orthodox family. The cow is a kosher animal. Period. Certain parts are not eaten by Orthodox Jews (i.e. sciatic nerve area- forbidden by Torah scripture). However, of course both MILK and MEAT produced by cows is capable of being kosher. As long as accepted Orthodox laws are followed in preparing the meat, it is Kosher. Meat & Milk are not consumed TOGETHER because of RABBINIC prohibition based on Torah scripture “thou shalt not eat a kid seethed in it’s mother’s milk”.

All restaurants/foods consumed by Orthodox Jews must be certified as Kosher by a known acceptable Orthodox authority. Kosher food is a lot more complicated than most people understand, as there may be processes involved in manufacture that could involve non-kosher items, even if the food itself does not contain those ingredients (i.e. animal derived “food grade” lubricants on factory processing machines…i.e. you don’t use petroleum based grease on rollers used to make food items, various food colorings and other “base” ingredients may be animal or even INSECT derived, like SHELLAC red food coloring, derived from the LAC bug).

In regards to pizza- the CHEESE must be kosher, as many cheeses are made using ANIMAL renet, which is NOT KOSHER. And of course all contact surfaces must be kosher- which is why an observant Jew will not eat “plain cheese pizza” from a non-kosher pizza restaurant. It’s not just about mixing milk & meat.

Debbie – I laugh when I think my first car was a 1967 Camaro – 327 275 hp V8, a front “bench” seat that GM made – only 6,000 examples – in 1972 I tried for 6 months to sell it before getting $1,000 for it.

Would like to know the story of the $250,000 Z28 – that seems pretty high. Although the craziest Camaro sale was a 1969 – factory made with a 427 big block – a “special order” option – skinny bias ply tires – went for $700,000 – before our current economic problems, of course.

One of the most beautiful body designs ever out of GM.

Mine?

1970 1/2 LS-396 Big Block SS Camaro. Bright Screaming Yellow Zonker yellow, black interior with houndstooth check cloth seat facings. Open grille, blacked out rear panel. 400 hp.

Lowered it a half inch, cranked on heavier sway bars front and rear, installed the new era of gas shocks and these new inventions called radials from Pirelli. Then a a new Carter carb and redesigned easier breathing headers. Sweet babbling buddha that was an extremely fast and rock solid handling car. I LOVED IT. It was also a cop-magnet.

But, at age 18 I learned an important lesson. I could afford the car, and college (or) I could afford the insurance gasoline, oil, maintenance and sundry expenses and college. I could not afford the car and college at the same time.

Ran an ad for it and my father bought it. SOB even dickered on the price leaving me $1,000 short of breaking even providing another important lesson.

But what a hoot to see him later at 80 years old stooped, slumped shouldered with his fedora and glasses barely seen over the door sill in the driver’s window two hands on the wheel rapping the throttle and making great lion-roar bass notes at a stop light next to some kid in a Datsun.

Life is sweet.

(after begging him to sell it back to me when he tired of it he somehow forgot and let it go for $500 to a factory foreman at his church in 1990)

I bought a 1972 Camaro in December 1972 with the money I saved during basic training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT). It had everything I wanted on it and I ordered it that way. Mine was light blue. Had a 350 ci with a 4 barrel carb. It would get up and go!!! Gas was 27 cents per gallon and they pumped it. I drove it until I was shipped overseas. Gave it to my little brother. Who blew the engine 🙁
My cost was $3000.00 total. The Z package was about $1000.00 more.

Brings back memories especially since Schnatter’s home town of Jeffersonville is also my home town.

Maybe he will sell his replica Camaro or give it away!!!

You remind me … I can still remember the amount on the Contract.

$3,696.95

Sheeesh. That is really ugly compared to my 1969 Camaro. Rather sad really.

The Song “Bitchin’ Camaro” by the Dead Milkmen comes to mind.

Brief Synopsis: Pittsburgh closes out its dynasty
with an impressive victory over the Rams. Here,
beauties didn’t necessarily take precedence over beasts.
Everything seemed to have a more buttoned-down, modern
appearance than, say, the current Ford Focus.
