Bill Bonds–Nazi Lover, Jew-Hater, Drunk Driver, Liberal Newscaster–Buh-Bye

By Debbie Schlussel

Bill Bonds, who dominated Detroit television news in the ’70s and ’80s, is being mourned throughout Southeastern Michigan as some sort of great journalistic icon and saint. But Bonds, who died yesterday at age 82, was an open Nazi-lover, Jew-hater, serial drunk driver, shameless liberal news anchor, and all-around hypocrite, who should not be missed. He definitely won’t be missed by me. Cue the music for “Only the Good Die Young, #751,283,977.”

billbonds

Before cable TV, there were only three major broadcast television stations in most major cities. And their newscasts were dominated by liberal liars and propagandists. At Detroit’s ABC affiliate, WXYZ-TV a/k/a Channel 7, the newscasts were dominated by Bill Bonds. He is Exhibit A of why it’s a good thing TV news is no longer as influential and dominant as it once was. Back in those days of dominant local TV news, Bonds regularly gave us his unwanted, unsolicited commentary and fake grandstanding parading as a newscast. And his commentary and grandstanding included lots of anti-Israel, pro-Nazi, and anti-conservative rhetoric.

Whenever Bonds read news stories about Israel under attack or spurred to war by its brutally vicious Arab Muslim neighbors, Bonds would regularly make anti-Israel comments. When the INS arrested and deported Valerian Trifa–a Romanian Orthodox priest who was a Nazi, member of Romania’s Iron Guard (the Romanian version of the SS), and led pogroms against the Jews of Romania which killed thousands–Bonds let his audience know how upset he was. “Why don’t they just leave that poor man alone?!” Bonds exclaimed on his newscast about this Nazi who lied on his immigration documents. (Trifa lived a long life in the U.S., despite Romanian-Jewish dentist and immigrant Charles Kremer’s fight to have him brought to justice since 1957, and he finally got the U.S. government to do something.) I was just a kid when Bonds did this, but I’ll never forget how angry my parents were, because we had the Channel 7 newscast on at our house when he said those words.

Bonds would also regularly give us his stale dose of liberal comments on news stories he was reading on the air. Back when Republican Senator Orrin Hatch was still a conservative, Bonds was incredibly rude and obnoxious to him on the air during a satellite interview–so much so that Hatch walked off live on the air in mid-interview. This treatment was solely because Hatch was a conservative and was discussing the Contract with America. While Bonds is credited for “going toe-to-toe” with late Detroit Mayor and racist demagogue Coleman Young, that characterization is false. In fact, it was mostly empty grandstanding and typical Bonds bloviating bluster. Bonds and Young were good friends who would laugh about it off the air, knowing that Bonds never ever actually asked Young any deep, incisive, tough questions. Ever. And Young continued to run Detroit with his deeply corrupt machinations without Bonds ever saying a word on the air about it.

Bill Bonds pretended on the air to be a blue collar man of the people. But he was no such thing. His blue collar bonhomie was bunk. As was his liberal pretense for “diversity” and equality. Bonds was a wealthy man who lived the good life, drove fancy cars, lived in fancy houses, and had a longtime membership at Oakland Hills Country Club, the ritzy Detroit area club that did NOT allow Jewish or Black members during most of Bonds’ time golfing on its greens. Today, the club has a handful of token Jews and Blacks as members. (For the record, I believe that private clubs should be able to admit–or exclude–whomever they want. But Bonds, a liberal, pretended he believed otherwise.) My mother used to see Bonds go into a private room to get his hair done at the fancy Birmingham, Michigan salon where she got hers done. Bonds, who wore a very obvious toupee was there to get his rug sewn back into the hair he had left on the sides of his pompous head.

Bill Bonds was a complete drunk and alcoholic, often slurring his words on the air. That was the only fun part about watching his newscasts. Despite losing his own daughter to a drunk driver, Bonds was repeatedly arrested for drunk driving and drunk driving accidents, including one in which he was inches from killing a teen driver (and then punched and hit the teen). If Bonds did this today, when drunk driving is no longer tolerated, he’d have been a convicted felon who served years behind bars. In those salad days of the TV news business, Bonds reportedly had a contract for a million dollar annual salary for life. But that quickly ended as his alcoholism and drunk driving incidents increased, and Channel 7 fired him in 1995.

Bonds was never really interested in journalism or hard-hitting news, contrary to the endless claims in last night’s coverage of his death. In fact, he wanted to be a celebrity more than anything, and he fancied himself a showman. He had minor roles playing a newscaster in two movies in the early ’70s, including “Escape from the Planet of the Apes.” And with his success in Detroit, he twice tried to make it in the big city. But his stints as an anchor in Los Angeles and New York were both failures, and he had to high-tail it back to Motown.

After he was fired from Channel 7 in the ’90s, Bonds tried to make it on another station, in a return commentary gig at Channel 7, in two radio shows, and was given every other opportunity in the world. But he failed at all of them. So, he had to become a pitchman for a cheap furniture store’s ads on TV. Then, it warmed my heart to see this conceited, self-important, sleazy, Jew-hating, Nazi-loving liberal reach a new low when he served as the paid TV spokeswhore for Michigan’s sleaziest ambulance-chasing law firm, “The Law Offices of Sam Bernstein.”

During the endless non-stop coverage of his death last night on Detroit media broadcasts, many of his former media colleagues kept repeating this: “there will never be another Bill Bonds.”

Well, thank G-d for that. One was more than enough. Sadly, there are far too many of his kind in our media to date.

Only the Good Die Young. Bill Bonds, dead at 82. Buh-bye!

He also wore a stupid looking rug. That in itself indicates a low IQ.

A great article. Now how about a run down on all the other Bill Bonds on MSNBC, CNN,ABC,NPR, etc.,etc,.

On an unrelated note, I’m beginning to think the rumpus over CIA torture really shows how our national security establishment can’t defend what’s right from wrong. Or to be more exact, these days it actually forgives some of the most evil people in the world as shown in the following story.

The North Koreans say the Americans are coming to their country to get Americans who love Communism there released rather than letting them stay there and rot.

If I get it straight, our intelligence chief can negotiate with the thug runs North Korea to bring our traitors home safe and sound but he can’t touch a hair on the head of Islamic terrorists because that’s inhumane.

Hilarious. And more evidence of why our country is sliding into oblivion.

NormanF on December 14, 2014 at 12:27 pm

My, my my…wearing a bouf’ed out woodland creature on his dopey head ain’t the only thing this talking rug had in common with James Traficant.

Great column and I love to know there are others like me who like to tell it like it is when jerks cark it. That’s how I roll.

Boston’s retarded Mayor Mumbles Menino (lover of funding Mooooslim Mosques) recently shed his mortal coil and you would have thought that marble-mouthed hack was a saint who died. I was the only one who remembered him proper as an annoying Libtard who was Boston’s greatest embarrassment. It was disgusting to behold. This place is full of fakes and I guess that border doesn’t stop at the edge of this moonbat infested state!

I also enjoyed this article because buffoons like Bonds are regional well-knowns and every area has them. We tend to forget that. Howie Carr always talks about our regional well-knowns and it’s always funny to remember…or sometimes annoying.

Buh-Bye Bill Bonds! Glad I never knew yee!

So mildly disapproving of the deportation of a priest in one single case makes this newscaster an “open Nazi-lover?”

Debbie seems to think that everything is “pro-Nazi.” She’s like the Jewish version of Al Sharpton – constantly running the fake outrage machine.

D.B. Palmer on December 14, 2014 at 10:55 am

“Federal officials said a speech in Bucharest by Archbishop Trifa on Jan. 20, 1941, touched off four days of attacks in which 300 Jews and others were killed.” from NYT

Trifa was a member of the Iron Guard ( Romania’s Nazi party). D.B. Palmer, or what ever your name is, those that defend Nazis are Nazis. You Mr. Palmer are the one that is “running the fake outrage machine “; not D.S.

FS on December 14, 2014 at 11:31 am

F.S.: Wait, I’m confused – are you now trying to claim that this NEWSCASTER was in Bucharest in 1941 as well?

If you think that everyone who disagrees with deporting someone 35 years after the fact is automatically a “Nazi,” you should probably get out of this country right away – it’s probably about 90 percent “Nazi,” by your reasoning. Probably more than 90 percent. Of course, you should also add in the people who believe in this newscaster’s right to free speech, as well. They’re “defending” someone who “defended” a Nazi – therefore they are all Nazis.

Nazis, Nazis everywhere – oh my! Obviously, your views are NOTHING AT ALL like Sharpton’s race-paranoia. Obviously.

    D.B. Palmer on December 14, 2014 at 4:06 pm

Huh? Palmer (not sure what the DB stands for, but it’s none of my business, nor I could careless), have you read anything that DS has sourced to the table in the past?

If you’ve read anything that the woman has written, you wouldn’t have used silly “moral-relativism” of somewhat correlating her to Al Sharpton, as NormanF interpreted, she has NEVER been responsible for the deaths, or physical injuries of anyone. Now, is this me saying that the woman, Ms. Schlussel is perfect? Answer, no, she’s not perfect, and she’s been wrong on a few occasions where I’ve disagreed with her and have used “logics” and “analytics”, not using logical-fallacies.

And speaking of logical fallacies, you’ve also used a fallacy of “appeal to emotions”, meaning in your mindset, anyone’s metaphysical worldview that’s antithetical to Debbie’s, she computes them to “Nazi’s” or a Nazi, etc., I’ve been following and reading the lady’s work for over 5 years and she’s NEVER called anyone a Nazi because their views differentiates to hers. So I don’t know what you equated her to Al Sharpton, where she’s NOT even close to being or thinking like him!

      Sean R. on December 14, 2014 at 10:33 pm

It is never too late to deport mass murdering scum.

Bonds can burn in Hades. Glad I don’t live in Detroit.

      Occam's Tool on December 15, 2014 at 12:07 am

Debbie isn’t fighting for a special privilege or inciting to divide people on the basis of national origin.

Jews have the right to pursue justice. By the way, the exhortation to do so is found in the Hebrew Bible. And Valerian Trifa was a Nazi and didn’t deserve American citizenship, period.

D.B Palmer, Debbie Schlussel is the exact opposite of Al Sharpton. His racist incitement actually resulted in the death of Jews in Crown Heights.

Debbie has done no such thing. Check your facts before spouting off baseless accusations.

Never heard of this guy until now,but apparently a few people noticed his passing.

Someone posted a video on Youtube in 2012 of Bonds losing it when taping a promo for the evening newscast.

Return from the Planet of the Apes? Apt description.

Little Al on December 14, 2014 at 3:18 pm

I remember Bonds’ short-lived stint with New York’s Channel 7 a.k.a. WABC-TV in 1975-76, he co-anchored the 11 P.M. newscast first with Roger Grimsby and then, after Bill Beutel returned to anchor with Grimsby at 6 P.M., Bonds was paired at 11 with once-and-future Boston anchor Tom Ellis (I presume likewise liberal-left) before returning to Detroit in late 1976. Also, when Bonds did his role in Escape from the Planet of the Apes, he was in the middle of his failed L.A. stint at that Channel 7 – KABC-TV. But given what Debbie noted about his particular track record, I presume the R.I.H. wishes would be too good for him?

I remember seeing Bill Bonds in the early 1970’s signing autographs at a grand opening of a Burger Chef in Grosse Pointe.

Lars on December 14, 2014 at 8:23 pm

Being from Windsor and having a mother (and all of her family) who was from Detroit, Channel 7 News was on in our house too. I also remember my mom talking back to the T.V. when he was on. She didn’t like him either, probably for the same reasons you didn’t. Like you said, only the good die young…

Karen G. on December 14, 2014 at 11:21 pm

Question for DS:

Back in the day, there was a news anchor in Little Rock named Ruth Spencer who was unabashedly ultra-liberal. Eventually, she left for Detroit where she still works. Is Spencer still an ultra-liberal propagandist or has she become more objective?

CR: She continues to be a liberal . . . and a brainless moron. DS

Looking at that rug of Bonds’ on that vidcap, one wonders how he managed to conceal the $6.98 price tag hanging over it. With a ‘piece like that, you expect that to peer out anytime. But his voice didn’t just betray his drinking, one wonders if he was a heavy smoker as well, besides his pro-Nazi, anti-Jewish, uber-leftist sentiments (I almost typed “sediments,” which would have been more apt in his case).

ConcernedPatriot on December 15, 2014 at 11:13 am

Is it possible Mr. Bonds has Received (BY MISTAKE) a Hebrew Keyboard addressed to You? Please Advise.

Simon on December 15, 2014 at 5:31 pm

Learn something new everyday just about. Knew about the drunkenness and daughter stuff. I didn’t care about the news on t.v. back in his hey day, and don’t recall much about him except his self important air he always held. Got to think of Ron Burgandy when I see him or hear of him. Now I really know enough to seriously dislike the dead jerk. Good report.

He sounds like he was the local trash heap of local news.

Seriously…Bill Bonds was widely known/well established and recognized especially for his distinctive excellence!!! In1977 he drew more than 40% of the television audience for his 5pm telecast!! Bill faced adddiction demons that millions still face everyday. …….STOP THE HATE!! May he rest in peace!!

Hitler and Stalin had pretty high ratings too in their day. Your point, gentlemen?

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on December 17, 2014 at 10:31 pm

Bill was a dick, I remember him also. I was not political then, because I was a kid, but today there are douche bags on both sides of the isle. Bonds must of been a real dick wad, politically. I was looking for the drunk video of him on air, they must of took it off. He was as shithead as a drunk too.

fred on December 18, 2014 at 5:19 pm

Your a bad Jew.

Sam loves ham on December 19, 2014 at 7:00 am

Wow, a lot of hate here!
I also grew up watching Bill and he was hard to take much of the time. I’ll give you that. It got to the point where I simply could not sit through an entire broadcast. He was definitely an egotistical blowhard.
But, is it really necessary to spew all this hatred? Debbie, I think maybe you need to take a chill pill. Calling hi a Nazi lover and a Jew hater is really over the top.
