Bill Bonds–Nazi Lover, Jew-Hater, Drunk Driver, Liberal Newscaster–Buh-Bye
Bill Bonds, who dominated Detroit television news in the ’70s and ’80s, is being mourned throughout Southeastern Michigan as some sort of great journalistic icon and saint. But Bonds, who died yesterday at age 82, was an open Nazi-lover, Jew-hater, serial drunk driver, shameless liberal news anchor, and all-around hypocrite, who should not be missed. He definitely won’t be missed by me. Cue the music for “Only the Good Die Young, #751,283,977.”
Before cable TV, there were only three major broadcast television stations in most major cities. And their newscasts were dominated by liberal liars and propagandists. At Detroit’s ABC affiliate, WXYZ-TV a/k/a Channel 7, the newscasts were dominated by Bill Bonds. He is Exhibit A of why it’s a good thing TV news is no longer as influential and dominant as it once was. Back in those days of dominant local TV news, Bonds regularly gave us his unwanted, unsolicited commentary and fake grandstanding parading as a newscast. And his commentary and grandstanding included lots of anti-Israel, pro-Nazi, and anti-conservative rhetoric.
Whenever Bonds read news stories about Israel under attack or spurred to war by its brutally vicious Arab Muslim neighbors, Bonds would regularly make anti-Israel comments. When the INS arrested and deported Valerian Trifa–a Romanian Orthodox priest who was a Nazi, member of Romania’s Iron Guard (the Romanian version of the SS), and led pogroms against the Jews of Romania which killed thousands–Bonds let his audience know how upset he was. “Why don’t they just leave that poor man alone?!” Bonds exclaimed on his newscast about this Nazi who lied on his immigration documents. (Trifa lived a long life in the U.S., despite Romanian-Jewish dentist and immigrant Charles Kremer’s fight to have him brought to justice since 1957, and he finally got the U.S. government to do something.) I was just a kid when Bonds did this, but I’ll never forget how angry my parents were, because we had the Channel 7 newscast on at our house when he said those words.
Bonds would also regularly give us his stale dose of liberal comments on news stories he was reading on the air. Back when Republican Senator Orrin Hatch was still a conservative, Bonds was incredibly rude and obnoxious to him on the air during a satellite interview–so much so that Hatch walked off live on the air in mid-interview. This treatment was solely because Hatch was a conservative and was discussing the Contract with America. While Bonds is credited for “going toe-to-toe” with late Detroit Mayor and racist demagogue Coleman Young, that characterization is false. In fact, it was mostly empty grandstanding and typical Bonds bloviating bluster. Bonds and Young were good friends who would laugh about it off the air, knowing that Bonds never ever actually asked Young any deep, incisive, tough questions. Ever. And Young continued to run Detroit with his deeply corrupt machinations without Bonds ever saying a word on the air about it.
Bill Bonds pretended on the air to be a blue collar man of the people. But he was no such thing. His blue collar bonhomie was bunk. As was his liberal pretense for “diversity” and equality. Bonds was a wealthy man who lived the good life, drove fancy cars, lived in fancy houses, and had a longtime membership at Oakland Hills Country Club, the ritzy Detroit area club that did NOT allow Jewish or Black members during most of Bonds’ time golfing on its greens. Today, the club has a handful of token Jews and Blacks as members. (For the record, I believe that private clubs should be able to admit–or exclude–whomever they want. But Bonds, a liberal, pretended he believed otherwise.) My mother used to see Bonds go into a private room to get his hair done at the fancy Birmingham, Michigan salon where she got hers done. Bonds, who wore a very obvious toupee was there to get his rug sewn back into the hair he had left on the sides of his pompous head.
Bill Bonds was a complete drunk and alcoholic, often slurring his words on the air. That was the only fun part about watching his newscasts. Despite losing his own daughter to a drunk driver, Bonds was repeatedly arrested for drunk driving and drunk driving accidents, including one in which he was inches from killing a teen driver (and then punched and hit the teen). If Bonds did this today, when drunk driving is no longer tolerated, he’d have been a convicted felon who served years behind bars. In those salad days of the TV news business, Bonds reportedly had a contract for a million dollar annual salary for life. But that quickly ended as his alcoholism and drunk driving incidents increased, and Channel 7 fired him in 1995.
Bonds was never really interested in journalism or hard-hitting news, contrary to the endless claims in last night’s coverage of his death. In fact, he wanted to be a celebrity more than anything, and he fancied himself a showman. He had minor roles playing a newscaster in two movies in the early ’70s, including “Escape from the Planet of the Apes.” And with his success in Detroit, he twice tried to make it in the big city. But his stints as an anchor in Los Angeles and New York were both failures, and he had to high-tail it back to Motown.
After he was fired from Channel 7 in the ’90s, Bonds tried to make it on another station, in a return commentary gig at Channel 7, in two radio shows, and was given every other opportunity in the world. But he failed at all of them. So, he had to become a pitchman for a cheap furniture store’s ads on TV. Then, it warmed my heart to see this conceited, self-important, sleazy, Jew-hating, Nazi-loving liberal reach a new low when he served as the paid TV spokeswhore for Michigan’s sleaziest ambulance-chasing law firm, “The Law Offices of Sam Bernstein.”
During the endless non-stop coverage of his death last night on Detroit media broadcasts, many of his former media colleagues kept repeating this: “there will never be another Bill Bonds.”
Well, thank G-d for that. One was more than enough. Sadly, there are far too many of his kind in our media to date.
Only the Good Die Young. Bill Bonds, dead at 82. Buh-bye!

He also wore a stupid looking rug. That in itself indicates a low IQ.
