VIDEO: Rodger Rampage Victim’s Dad Blames NRA, Gun Owners’ Rights for Son’s Death

I can’t even begin to imagine what it would be like to lose your son to a crazed lunatic, as Richard Martinez did yesterday when his son, Christopher Ross Michaels-Martinez, was murdered by Elliot Rodger. And I can understand his need to create some sort of meaning in the meaningless, random shooting of his son–to blame some concrete, “preventable” reason. But the Second Amendment and the NRA’s vigilant defense of it is not the reason his son died. It has nothing to do with it. In fact, someone who is mentally disturbed, by law, is prohibited from owning a gun (federal background checks required for gun purchases have kept millions of mentally unhealthy individuals from owning guns, and perhaps Rodger’s illness wasn’t apparent in the federal database).

And, so, despite his right to grieve and what is clearly incredible sadness and loss of a loved one, it is unfortunate that this father chose to use his grief spotlight to engage in politics. Note also that Rodger stabbed to death three of his roommates prior to the shooting spree. Perhaps we should have knife control in America, too?

Note also that police were asked to check on Rodger not long before his rampage took place and they reported no issues:

Police had interacted with the suspected murderer before Friday. Officers interviewed Rodger on April 30 in a welfare check requested by his family, Brown said. Officers concluded he was “polite, courteous” and downplayed any difficulties. Rodger told officers he had problems in his social life.

Police did not look for guns or report anything that might have prevented Rodger from obtaining guns after the visit. The thing is, there is NO law that would have prevented Rodger from obtaining guns, other than complete gun control or requiring an examination by a psychiatrist. Since Rodger had Asperger’s Syndrome, was this on any medical or government record of his? Apparently not, or laws in most jurisdictions (not to mention, again, the federal database used for background checks prior to gun purchases) likely would have ruled him incompetent to obtain firearms due to competence issues. And he could have purchased guns illegally if he had wanted to.

Again, I feel for Mr. Martinez. But his tragic loss should not equal our loss of Second Amendment rights or any infringement thereof.

BTW, I’m sure I’m “not allowed” (by the mental illness PC thought police) to blame Rodger’s behavior on his Asperger’s, just as I was “not allowed” to blame or form any tie whatsoever between Adam Lanza’s massacre at Sandy Hook and his autism. When I did that, over a year ago, self-appointed celebrity queen of autism, Holly Robinson Peete, repeatedly attacked me on Twitter. When I looked into her autism charity’s spending and noted it’s mostly waste and money to fly Ms. Robinson Peete all over America for self-promoting television appearances, including on ABC’s yenta hag-fest “The View-opause,” she stopped responding to my tweets, blocked me, and wouldn’t answer any questions.

Oh, and what about the incessant need of all younger generations in our Facebook and Twitter generation to be famous because social media has fed and massaged that need? This guy, Rodger, was certainly bitten by that bug and took it to an extreme. Guns had nothing to do with that.

I agree. It is amazing that a grief response has now become so politicized. As noted by Debbie, Rodger began his rampage by killing three men. Long ago, we might have asked if he had some latent sexual tendencies that might have stirred him to hate women so much, but not now.

Oh please, Worry. I take “manifestos” seriously when the Moooooslim family god allah is mentioned, and I take them seriously when a 22-year-old with Asperger’s writes on and on about not getting any sexual attention–from women. A gay 22-year-old man does not hate women; he would typically regard them as irrelevant, excepting female friends. A mental case does not go on a murder spree based on the irrelevant.

Debbie’s info on his Asperger’s is clearly relevant, if only to. explain why chicks wouldn’t give him the time of day. His ruminations that his family status wasn’t high enough to offset his behavior were, in fact, incisive.

I have two things to say:

1) I don’t fault the father for blaming lack of gun control for what happened, even though as Debbie points out lack of gun control had nothing to do with this. He is probably being comforted by foolish people who don’t know any better and at a time like this one reaches out for anything that seems like it might be able to help.

2) As the father of two learning disabled children, one of whom has Asbergers, I can say that Asbergers had nothing to do with this and shame on anyone who claims it did. He may have other mental issues that contributed, but the Asbergers certainly did not.

I also can’t believe that Asbergers can be used to justify the taking away of someone’s Second Amendment rights. There is no reason someone with Asbergers should be prohibited from owning a gun.

Respectfully, I_AM_ME, I have to disagree in part with your claim that Asperger’s was irrelevant. I very clearly distanced him from others, in particular women, who would not give him the time of day. That wouldn’t be enough by itself, but to pretend that it is irrelevant is just not plausible.

skzion – You make a valid point. My son has had some social problems due to his Asbergers, however he would never hurt anyone. This kid must have had some other severe problems that made the social isolation more difficult for him to handle in order to pull off this rampage.

The above having been said, my son’s schools stepped up to the plate and provided therapy to help him. His Mother and I also paid for outside therapists. He stll has some problems relating socially (We had a civil divorce three months ago and now my ex is trying to extort me before she will acccept a religious divorce, all of which at least indirectly contributes to his social issues) but we have managed to minimize them.

If you were to ask me, I’d say that Planned Parenthood and NARAL are both more to blame for, say, Casey Anthony’s 2008 murder of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee than the NRA and Second Amendment supporters / advocates were for this latest massacre.

His hatred of women is chilling. Someone his age should realize rejection is a fact of life – men do it to women, too and there is nothing personal about not being interested in someone you’re not attracted to.

Some people don’t want to grow up! At my age, like Castiglione’s courtier, I have become less honest but become more sincere. Age improves with wisdom and the more we live out our lives, we know the world is not fair. But that is never a reason to take it out on others.

I do hope Richard Martinez gets the death penalty. What he did cannot be undone. Its a profound lesson that humanity is a compound of good and evil. We cannot be human if we were angels and we cannot be human if we were demons. Only when we learn to balance human nature can we find all we seek in this life.

And some of us will fail at it terribly. That too is a fact of life that will remain with mankind as long as it inhabits this world.

Its a fact of life that more gun control laws won’t change. Taking away our right to defend ourselves allows murderers to get away with the mass slaughter of innocent people.

I can understand the need to lash out but I have to ask would I be doing this on the world stage so soon after losing a family member.
I’ve wondered if there is a relationship between forms of autism and sociopathy for some time now.
Are they a special type of autism? Aspergers turned on its head somehow?
What they have in common is an inability to experience real human empathy.

You can’t be but overwhelmed by this parent’s profound grief. This grieving father’s grasp for relief from the depths of anguish is understood with ease. But sad, too, is the lashing out at the purely innocent NRA. Implicit in that indictment is a call for government action. Scapegoating the NRA and looking to further gun legislation– symptomatic of the surreal monomania of the Left– is helpful only to the hopeful for quick, “waiting right before our very eyes” solutions. A grasping at straws; desperate as Catcher in the Rye’s Holden Caulfield feeling he has no one to talk to but his ten year old sister.

The devastation randomly wreaked on the innocent begs to be addressed outside the realm of political feel-good non-solutions. You’d think Left, right, and in between could all at least agree on that.

It’s not being widely reported by the media, but Mr. Martinez actually delivered his speech while he was standing on top of his son’s fresh corpse. The reporters present, though aghast at Mr. Martinez’s bad taste, tactfully avoided filming the base of the podium. Kind of like FDR’s wheelchair, folks.

Incidentally, I for one am HUGELY relieved that the grief-stricken father is not blaming the person who, you know, actually SHOT his son dead. Whew, what a relief! And he didn’t waste much time, did he? He was all johnny-on-the-spot with his little political speech.

Didn’t this little Thai ladyboy closet case also, like, run down four people with his car? Why aren’t people angrily demanding more federal “car control” laws? I mean, what a sick society, right? Just about anyone can run right out and buy a car

That’s right, I said scripted. And there is a talk radio host who has wondered about it on more than one occasion.

Whack job puts society on notice that he’s a whack job about to explode and do something terrible, but somehow “falls through the cracks.” Whack job then goes out and actually does something terrible, and up pops someone to blame the NRA and urge more gun laws.

Sorry Mr. Martinez for your loss, but I’ve seen and had my own share of tragedy, and you lose points for your idiotic politicizing of this terrible crime. What about the car and the knives, as others have mentioned? A law abiding citizen with a carry permit could have stopped this before it got out of hand, although not have prevented all the deaths, especially the three who got stabbed.

Mr. Martinez, if you and I are standing outside the gates of The Kingdom on Judgment Day, and God pops his head out the door to say ‘there’s only room for one left,’ I’ll say ‘take him.’ But in the here and now, despite your well earned grief, you’re also a political moron with an agenda. Shame on you. You can have my NRA card, IF you can get past my two 24″ machetes and pluck it from my cold, dead hand.

I have no doubt they did. If they had , the two young women and your son would have been spared and for you today would have been just another mostly ordinary day.

Yes, indeed, the Second Amendment is NOT the problem.

The real problems are the two elephants in the room that nobody wants to talk about: (1) the rise of Islamic terrorism and the public’s acceptance of it; and (2) the rise in the stupidization of America.

After the 911 mass murders, instead of a lockdown on the spread of Islamic fascism in America there has been, instead, nonstop Islamopandering. The many Islamoterrorist acts since 911 have only inspired copycat murders of civilians. Only instead of using bombs, they use guns to kill groups of people.

But the other elephant in the room is the stupidization of America. When James Holmes went on his killing spree in a movie theater, an astonishing number of idiots were Tweeting how good looking, cute, and nice Holmes seemed to be. After the Boston marathon bombers, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were identified, Americans began Tweeting how cute the killers were. And now, with Elliot Rodger, Americans are Tweeting how “hot” and “cute” Rodger is. Instead of vilifying these barbarians, they are hailed as sex symbols by the species I now refer to as Boobus Americanus.

As those of my type are clearly outnumbered by the Boobus Americanus, unfortunately, the rest of us can only look forward to more of the same acts of random, senseless violence.

Asperger’s individual here. Never thought I’d be compelled to say something on this message board. I was lucky enough to have enough role models around me who talked to me like a person and had patience with me. When you meet one person who has it, you meet one person who has it. Even if I didn’t have the right people around me, I always had a sense of right and wrong and responsibility. I’d like nothing more than for people to stand up and say that in any situation you are in, you are the common denominator.

Btw, Debbie knocked it out of the park in her analysis of Autism Speaks. No one with autistic anything like them, and their propaganda is why productive, responsible people like me easily feel ashamed of themselves.

In my opinion, the 22 year old dead murderer was probably NEVER told, “No,” until he left home. He did not know-or did not want to-how to handle being told, “No.”
2:1 this “kid” had been on a chemical cocktail since Kindergarten; probably due to over stimulation by his parents…”guilt, little quality time with his parent(s) (Be still and know…” It’s the typical, “poor little rich kid.”
As far as the grieving father: Whack job Communist period. Sorry for his loss, but STFU and take care of your child’s memory period. …wonder if he has a “coexist” bumper sticker.
Aside:
How many of the billions of males “hate” females, and how many of the billions of females “hate” men? BFD. What’s next? “Hate” crime legislation??? Aren’t radical feminist always bloviating (sp?) about “equal” rights?

Hollywood has taught people if they don’t have palatial mansions, lots of money, cool cars, fame and beautiful people hanging from their arms, they’re not really “in” America.

Elliot Rodger had more advantages than the poorest kid in life from the American sticks, yet he was never happy. You would think he would be a poster child for Hollywood and American materialism.

Life doesn’t work like that. And the poor dead girls? They are not part of the Hollywood lifestyle.

I read your articles on anti-semetism and how you hate the cruel treatment you recieve at the hands of the Muslims like Lola Elzein and the man who posted that horrifying picture of Daniel Pearl.

However in here, you are trashing people with Asperger’s categorizing them as violent.
I am one of those people. A female in her 20’s who lives with Asperger’s who shows no signs of violent behavior.
And here you are stereotyping me the way that the Muslims do to you.
Now, there was an orthodox Jewish man in New York who killed a child and Muslims were yelling that is the nature of the Jews.
Which is not.
But see, you get blamed on a daily basis by people who scapegoat you for being Jewish.
You’re hated by Palestinians who hate you for something you can’t help.
But you still want peace and acceptance.
Well, as a person with autism, I do too!
I want acceptance from people!

But how can we get acceptance if all we project is hate towards one another?
You hating on the autistic isn’t going to gain you acceptance or tolerance from the Muslims and the Arabs.
Think about it:
Don’t judge or condemn others or generalize them as all the same.
