Black Kid Admitted to All 8 Ivy League Schools Isn’t What Media Claims

By Debbie Schlussel

** SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATE/CORRECTION **

Most mainstream media outlets are gushing and slobbering over Kwasi Enin, a Long Island “first-generation American,” who was admitted into all eight Ivy League schools, including Harvard. The feat is extremely rare and we are being told what a genius this kid is. Well, given that, you’d think this guy is the valedictorian of his class and that he scored in the top percentile of the SATs, right?

quasienin

WRONG. In fact, Enin ranks number 11 in his class at William Floyd, a public school on Long Island. And he only scored in the 99th percentile of Blacks on the SATs, but not in that percentile, when he’s compared to everyone else. And that’s the thing. This guy is very smart, but he’s only a “genius” when he’s compared to other Black people. If there were no affirmative action–and he was compared to everyone else–he probably wouldn’t have gotten admitted into a single Ivy League school.

But that’s the problem with affirmative action. It’s not fair. He’s compared only to other Black people. And Whites are only compared to other Whites plus everyone smarter than them (such as Asians). It’s not about standards of intelligence and academic achievement. In fact, when I read today’s USA Today article on him, I could also read the subtext: “He’s smart . . . for a Black guy.” USA Today drooled:

His SAT score, at 2,250 out of 2,400 points, puts him in the 99th percentile for African-American students.

Um, why are we being told how this guy compares to other Blacks on the SAT? How is that relevant? And a better question is: why aren’t we being told how this guy did on the SAT compared to everyone who took it? The answer to that is that his score falls below the 99th percentile for everyone else, especially Whites and Asians, and it is likely not good enough for admission to any Ivy League school–but for his minority status–let alone all of them.

Blacks should be insulted by this. But they aren’t. They continue to demand this insult to their intelligence and achievement, called “affirmative action,” maybe because they know that in many cases, such as that of this over-hyped Enin guy, they aren’t “the smartest guy in the room.” In Enin’s school, there were 11 other students who performed academically better than he did. Do you think all of them–or even any of them–got into all eight Ivy League schools? No, they didn’t, or we’d have heard about it. And the reason is probably that they are White or not of the preferred minority status.

More:

But Enin has “a lot of things in his favor,” says college admissions expert Katherine Cohen, CEO and founder of IvyWise, a New York-based consulting firm. For one thing, he’s a young man. “Colleges are looking for great boys,” Cohen says. Application pools these days skew heavily toward girls: The U.S. Department of Education estimates that females comprised 57% of college students in degree-granting institutions last year. Colleges — especially elite ones — are struggling to keep male/female ratios even, so admitting academically gifted young men like Enin gives them an advantage.

He ranks No. 11 in a class of 647 at William Floyd, a large public school on Long Island’s south shore. That puts him in the top 2% of his class. His SAT score, at 2,250 out of 2,400 points, puts him in the 99th percentile for African-American students.

Kwasi Enin, whose parents are both nurses from Ghana, is not the first person to be admitted to all eight Ivy League school. But the reason he’s being pimped on us to no end is that he’s Black and his parents are immigrants. There is an agenda–no, two agendas–going on here. It’s not just that he’s a male. There are plenty of White males who did better than he did on the SAT, and they didn’t get in to all eight Ivies. I wonder how many of the ten kids ahead of him in his class are White males, and yet, again, they didn’t get into all eight Ivy League pods of pretension.

When I first saw this story in the middle of the night on a newscast, I thought, “You see, minorities claim they are discriminated against in college admissions and the SATs, and this Black guy got into all eight Ivy League schools!” But as I looked further into the story, I saw that, yes, there was discrimination at play here.

Racist discrimination in favor of this Black kid, which can only mean that somebody White with better grades (such as the 10 classmates who did better than he did at his school) and test scores (such as anyone who scored in the actual 99th percentile of SAT scores) was rejected on the basis of race and having too pale of a complexion.

***

One other thing: If you look at the SAT score percentile document posted above, you’ll note that Enin may have scored in the 98th percentile, at least compared to Whites. You might argue that this still shows he’s a genius. Yeah, but the fact is that there are plenty of Whites who scored in the 99th percentile who didn’t get into Harvard and Yale and Princeton and Brown, etc. And the competition is that tough at that level (even though many of these so-called “geniuses” are actually not too bright, except on paper).

He was given a leg up solely based on race.

**** UPDATE/Correction, 04/02/14: Yesterday, the source article used for this post stated that Enin’s parents were both doctors and studied medicine. Today, it’s been corrected to note they are both nurses, and, accordingly, this post has been corrected, as well. ****

If you agree with this article, and you have never been accepted into an Ivy League University, then your hateful comments are irrelevant.

The Truth on May 11, 2015 at 3:25 pm

The average sat score to get into most ivy is 2100+ so he should still have gotten in. Many Asians are turned away in favor of Whites, so Whites are the greatest beneficiaries of AA.

Lina on May 16, 2015 at 4:32 pm

Actually, it’s a myth that Asians are shunted aside by Whites in admissions to Harvard and Yale. The raw data collected by Ron Unz shows that Whites are actually hit the hardest by Affirmative Action policies, then Asians. Asians have a very high percentage of top people in academic settings, but in terms of raw numbers, Whites have the most, and are the most discriminated against by far. Do yourself a favor and look up Ron Unz’s work on Ivy League admissions and the discrimination involved.

That said, Ivy League schools are vastly overrated these days in all areas. The science departments are still very good, but in other areas they are nothing more than brainwashing academies relying on reputations from decades past.

Cry me a river Debbie. His grades would still have gotten him in.

Valerie on June 6, 2015 at 3:35 pm

Oh Debbie.

I like how you sit here and try to make yourself feel better by targeting a kid. Oh, what schools did you and your children attend? It doesn’t matter what his scores were he got into every ivy league school. The reason people are making it such a big deal is because stupid fucks like yourself make it seem like Blacks are not able to do anything. He is a success story no matter what color he is. And the only reason people mention his immigrant parents is because he is Black. But if their skin was white that would not even be a topic. There are millions of white immigrants that come over here but aren’t treated poorly. Due to the fact they just blend in with the dominant group in society. Lastly, go tell your parents and your children its time to pack your things. We have to go back to the country we came from because we to are indeed fucking immigrants..

you people sound dumb with your sh*tty stereotypes!!!! there is no best college!!!!! on June 9, 2015 at 6:48 pm

So first of all, I’d like to establish a baseline. There are top schools. The reason why these are top schools is because these schools provide tangible benefits later in life.

Harvard, Princeton and Yale have the most selective companies come to their campus to recruit and help you get into the best grad schools.

So let’s say you say you want to make a ton of money but don’t want to start your own company.

Princeton says great: Major in Finance. Work at Goldman Sachs as an investment banker. You will make 150k when your 22. At 24, you will move on to Private Equity or a Hedge Fund where you will make 400 – 600k. And by 28 you will be making closing to 800 to 1 Million at the Private Equity or Hedge Fund.

Let’s say you say, I want to be a Doctor.

Harvard says great. We will help you with a pre-med track. We have MCAT classes and a robust alumni network of people that attended the best med schools including our own here at Harvard.

Let’s say you want to be a Professor.

Yale says great. We will help you find a field that you are passionate about and then help you with the GRE’s and then facilitate your application to the top PH.D programs including our own here at Yale.

Very few schools can say and do these things, but the top schools can. That’s why the top schools matter and that’s why people attend top schools. They don’t want to leave their lives to chance.

Anyway, about this guy. Affirmative Action obviously still exists, but the purpose of it is diversity.

So what you have to think about is that this black kid, despite all of the difficulty there is being black, he still performed pretty well.

So if he’s a poor black kid, that’s fighting all of the temptation to just play sports. Fight the temptation to do drugs because your neighborhood is poor and the other kids are doing it. Probability says his parents are working two jobs or didn’t get a degree. He did pretty well even when faced with this hardship.

So forget about diversity for a second. He had a tougher life.

Is it fair? Maybe / maybe not. I’m not sure myself. I’m Asian American and schools have passed over me because I’m Asian American. Does that piss me off? Sure. But, I also know that my life is easier than that black kids.

Affirmative action tries to make up for the fact that black kids have it tougher to perform than white or Asian kids. I’m not saying this is the correct way of doing things, but it’s essentially helping level set.

Think of everything on the college application as as set of points and you need to surpass X points in order to be admitted.

Grades
Test Scores
Letters of Rec
ExtraCurric
Hardship*

Affirmative Action is just plus points to the hardship category.

So what’s unfair would be a rich black kid that goes to a prep school and gets admitted more easily. So that would be unfair, but wealth black kids are underrepresented.

So I just wanted to give you the non bullshit answer.

Kenneth Chen on June 13, 2015 at 5:35 pm

First off, I am a black man and have recently been accepted to Harvard among other Ivy League schools.

I think everyone reading this post can clearly see that it is garbage, catalyzed by an ignorant bias writer. First and foremost an SAT score of 2250 is phenomenal. That is ABOVE the average score for any student accepted to Harvard and it is over 100 points higher than the average black student ACCEPTED to Harvard.

Now the reason people like you don’t understand how someone ranked 11 got into Harvard is because you haven’t been through the college process in a millennium. Today colleges look at applications holistically. At my school a valedictorian has NEVER gotten into Harvard, because all they do is study. You need to have extracurricular activities in order to woo colleges.

I really wish you had done your research before posting this rant of pure ignorance and hate. The fact that you claimed an SAT score of 2250 is not good enough for an Ivy League alone shows me that you really know nothing about the college admissions process.

Jeffery on June 29, 2015 at 3:21 pm

This article is spot on. All these comments are affectless and assume so many different things that is is laughable.

Bottom line is this kid got accepted to these schools because he is black. BOTTOM LINE. Does not matter if he is smart or is his SAT is great, he got accepted because of his COLOR.

Ron on July 6, 2015 at 2:34 pm

Kwasi Erin is not “black” he’s “Nigerian”. They are educated people…

Michelle on July 25, 2015 at 3:20 am

This article is dishonest. The young man that was referred to in this article was in the 99th percentile for everyone that took the SAT. He was in the 2 nd percentile of his graduating class. The SAT scores of successful applicants to Ivy League universities range from 2100-2350. With an SAT score of 2250, this young man was comfortably in that range. Successful applicants to Cal Tech had the highest average SAT scores at 2300. If you really want to be scientific and truly transparent, you should look at the median scores as well.
Mr. Enin applied himself and excelled. The is no reason to try to diminish his accomplishments. He is an inspiration not just to blacks but to everyone.
I don’t think that the author of this article did her research. Here are some average SAT scores for a few elite universities. MIT-2220, Columbia-2215,Dartmouth-2190, Yale-2255, Princeton-2255, U Penn-2170 and Stanford-2215. No matter how you look at it , Mr. Enin was an extremely strong candidate. I don’t understand why Debbie takes issue with the positive attention that this young man has received. It is well deserved . I know of several blacks who graduated from elite schools. Debbie, this is not an aberration. Most of these people went on to grad school and are continuing to enjoy their version of the American Dream.

Cruzan on August 2, 2015 at 1:51 pm

Typical white whiney bs article. So upset that this young man is probably smarter than anyone in your family’s history, and you can’t fathom how he was able to do it when you were not. Let’s see maybe it’s because unlike you and your ilk he was taught to work hard. See he isn’t white so he can’t go through life goofing off and sleeping around and smoking pot,and doing heroin and still expect to get a job like you. I willing to bet you got your job from having either strong knees or a hell of a back.

Laughingatyou on December 9, 2015 at 6:00 pm

False ! 2250 is a +99% percentile for white students ! For black students, ony 1 out of 3 000 get this level.
By the way, 2250 is the average SAT of Harvard, Yale and Princeton (only Caltech is at 2300). The kid is brighter than more tha, 60% of the kids (the median is under the average because of positive discrimination for minorities) who will study there.

So if you are against positive discrimination for blacks, this young guy is the worst case for you argument.

Bruno from Paris on December 27, 2015 at 6:07 am

I don’t know what the author of this article is trying to prove.African guys graduate top of their class a the hardest scientific schools here in Europe(ecole polytechnique,,,,)where there is no affirmative action. What is so special about Harvard,MIT……?There are a lot of Africans excelling in their schools
Jelani Nelson:Harvard,Institute for advanced studies,MIT
Demba Ba:MIT,Harvard
John Dabiri:Prof at Caltech,Macarthur fellow
The list goes on …..
I think it is time to end this affirmative action bullshit that demean black people. Then we shall see if blacks cant succeed without affirmative action, provided that white people control their jealous and resentful natures

“Um, why are we being told how this guy compares to other Blacks on the SAT? How is that relevant? And a better question is: why aren’t we being told how this guy did on the SAT compared to everyone who took it? The answer to that is that his score falls below the 99th percentile for everyone else, especially Whites and Asians, and it is likely not good enough for admission to any Ivy League school–but for his minority status–let alone all of them.”
Um, Debbie, dear, why are you lying so flagrantly? A 2250 score places Mr. Enin in the 99 percentile range for everybody who took the SAT. I guess you think you’re cute when you lie. Please share with us your SAT score. I know it was a long time ago, but do make the effort.
SAT Composite Score Range Percentile Range

2250-2300 99 to 99
2200-2250 98 to 99

Kwasi Enin on May 5, 2016 at 4:31 pm

This is an old post, but I hope you read it. Your argument is based upon a number of incorrect, or at the very least, highly debatable assumptions. First that standardize tests are the single most important factor for admission, and that they are the best indicator of performance and outcome. They simply are not. Elite colleges use a holistic assessment, including essays, the student’s extra-curriculars, high school course load and the quality of school they attended versus their performance in the school relative to his peers. For all you or I know, he scored extremely high on all counts – 11th out of 650 students puts him in the top .01% of his class, so essentially the same as the #1 kid and something that advisors do not differentiate between. As for the predicted performance outcome or potential, most experts estimate that standardize tests are only about 6-8% accurate in predicting outcome, so they are far less important a factor than your argument assumes.

Secondly, the students starting point matters. It is well established that a large percentage of white and Asian children, many of whom are also comparatively affluent when compared to urban students of color, benefit from the ability to pay for multiple test takings as well as for tutoring. Something poorer children and children of color do not have the benefit of as often. When comparing the scores of white students to all other students of color, based on sitting for a standardize test the first time, and prior to any tutoring, the scores are much more similar, indicating that the performance metrics are far more similar than would otherwise be indicated.

Thirdly, and more importantly, your argument assumes that a class full of only “merit” based students, who would be predominately white and Asian, would make for a more interesting learning environment for the students, and that it would expose the students to at least an equally rich and varied perspective. It wouldn’t. This isn’t my opinion, it is a fact. And the fact is, that research has proven time and time again that homogenous learning environments make for far less inquisitive students who lack an understanding of the larger, more diverse world. Conversely, heterogeneous populations tend to produce more intellectually curious, open-minded students who understand the perspectives of the larger world. A larger world where the population is, in fact much, more diverse than most college campuses. Students learn as much, if not more from each other as they do from professors, so it inaccurate to say that they are likely to learn as much from a homogeneous group as from a heterogeneous one. College admissions are not an award, but instead an attempt by each college to admit the most well rounded, interesting a capable class that they can form from the group of applicants.

Fourthly, based on a desire for a diverse student population, this young man was likely chosen, in addition to his excellent scores (and they were top scores no matter how you slice it), amazing essays, impressive extra-curricular participation and other criteria because of three demographic factors: 1.) his socio – economic status, 2. his gender (because far more girls apply to college and perform better on standardize tests than boys), and 3.) his ethnicity.

As a college professor, I am here to tell you that a class full of the same type of students, gender, socio-economic status, race, etc., makes for a very boring learning environment, and allows students to incorrectly assume that their similar perspectives are the only legitimate ones, which is not only incorrect and dangerous, it sets them up to fail in the real world, where heterogeneity increasingly reigns.

most importantly however, and even if you reject my argument in kind, I believe you should be careful what you wish for. California passed a “merit only” proposition. The outcome? Last year’s accepted class at UCLA was comprised of almost 33% Asian females! The further result has been that many students of different races, including white students who were accepted at UCLA choose not to attend, citing the overwhelmingly homogenous Asian population as too limiting and stifling! It is generally accepted and understood that a classroom comprised entirely of men discussing gender issues or even broad economic issues impacting both genders, would be limited by the perspectives and life experiences of men alone, and therefore limiting the discussion to their own perceptions. No one argues that adding women to the mix would improve the discussion. well, the same goes for socio economic status and race!

Assuming that affirmative action is somehow reverse discrimination, is in many people’s estimation, an overly simplistic and incorrect assumption. An assumption born out of the misconception that all scores are equal despite the differing starting point of the student. Balancing incoming college classes with even a modicum of racial, gender and income diversity is not only the best way to level the playing field of unequal primary educational opportunities, and to ensure performance parity overtime, it also helps ALL of the students who comprise the population of a given campus, to have access to more varied and rich experiences and the benefit of other views and perspectives.

Finally, given that these are private institutions and not public ones, shouldn’t they be allowed to admit who they choose? Most people who oppose affirmative action, also oppose the government infringing upon a private organizations right to do what it pleases. If so, shouldn’t they get to decide? Or is it simply because they are deciding to do it in a manner which is different than you prefer that bothers you?

Mike Bailey on November 1, 2016 at 2:47 pm

GETTING INTO COLLEGE ISN’T ALL ABOUT GRADES. One of the most important parts of the application is the ESSAY(S) about why you want to go to that college. You can be smar, but a horribe fit for the school, so they won’t ake you. There are also extracurriculars and things you do outside of school.

Furthermore, you need people with different experiences and backgrounds so that everyone can learn from each other. If you go to school with a ton of kids JUST LIKE YOU you won’t learn a single thing (non-academic I mean) that will make you more worldly and will help you grow as a well rounded adult. Are there others smarter than him? of course, but grades and scores don’t define a person’s qualifications completely.

colleges want PASSIONATE and INTELLIGENT LEADERS, not just the smartest kids of every school. You need to look at the WHOLE PROFILE of the person, not just a snapshot of what YOU deem to be the most important part. The kid is obviously more than just smart and black if all 8 of the ivies accepted him. It’s not just a coincidence.

m on December 15, 2016 at 12:40 pm

I started to write a lengthy comment but then I decided not to. My thought is what would be the point and as a teacher who is actually doing something to change the lives of children instead of deflate and belittle them I could probably use my time more wisely.

Barb on February 12, 2017 at 4:53 pm

One wonders why white students, even three times more of them, aren’t smart enough to accomplish the same feat.

The reason is obvious. I think that is the point. Getting into any other one school may be in the cards if your scores and grades are good . But Zuckerburg wouldn’t have gotten into all 8.

Having said that, I’m happy for this student. Additionally, white legacy and the children of wealth, black and white, get affirmative action too.

Bob prince on April 5, 2017 at 3:36 pm

Racist and jealous White woman goes on Internet rant to belittle Black teen. Did the rant make you feel better, or do you need to see him lynched and his balls removed, before you can feel good about yourself as a White person?

The number 1 beneficiaries of affirmative action are White women. So it’s interesting to see you get so upset about it, but using a Black person as a target. The reason why affirmative action became necessary, is because many White company owners and HR people wouldn’t give minorities a fair chance. We sadly still have people that cling to the mindset of slavery, Black codes, and Jim Crow. The kind of people that can’t feel good about themselves, without people of color being worse off, lesser than, oppressed, or abused.
