40 Years Ago Today: The Yom Kippur War & Its Lessons

By Debbie Schlussel

I can’t let the day go by without noting that today is the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the Yom Kippur War, Israel’s victorious war against its Arab Muslim neighbors. On October 6, 1973, the Yom Kippur War began and concluded on October 25th. Israel won the war, despite being surrounded by a coalition of Muslim Arab nations bent on its destruction and led by Anwar Sadat, eager to fill the shoes of his predecessor (the leader of Arab nationalism, Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt), with his friend Hafez El-Assad following close behind.

Syrian Soldiers Surrender to Israel in Yom Kippur War

While we are constantly told that we must respect Muslim traditions, holidays, and religious observances, the Yom Kippur War was yet another example of Muslims’ lack of respect for ours, yours, and mine. They attacked on what is one of the two holiest holidays in Judaism, Yom Kippur (the other is Rosh HaShanah). And the attack also occurred during Ramadan, because Islam is always a warring religion, no matter what day it is. They want us to respect their religious observances, but they do not respect ours OR their own.

The attack is billed as a “surprise” attack (the CIA was clueless about it), but there were signs that it was going to happen. Golda Meir knew about Arab plans of impending attack because of the excellent intelligence of the Mossad. But she chose not to launch a pre-emptive attack, a mistake that cost more lives of Israel soldiers than would have been lost had she gone ahead with pre-emptive action.

And Israel defended itself and was victorious, despite the opposition of self-hating Jew, Henry Kissinger (who, today, continues to have Israel’s enemies, including Saudi Arabia, as his high-paying clients). Kissinger did not want President Richard Nixon to help the Jewish State (he always opposed Israel while in positions of power). Although Kissinger is credited by some sources with allegedly wanting to aid Israel in the war, it’s not exactly the case. It was Nixon’s Chief of Staff, General Alexander Haig, and the President, himself, who were on Israel’s side. They initially chose not to cut off aid and arms to Israel and helped it prevent Egypt and the Soviets from blocking and controlling the Suez Canal.

Eventually, however, Kissinger cut off the supply of arms to Israel and blamed it on others in the Nixon Administration, even though he made that decision. In his writings and statements, he said that he wanted Israel to “get a bloody nose,” and that he did not want to embarrass the Arabs. Fortunately, Israel refused to listen to Kissinger’s baseless demands that it stop fighting, and it continued in battle until it surrounded the major divisions of the Egyptian Army. Despite Kissinger’s cut off of weapons from Israel, Israel still miraculously won the war, like the Jewish Maccabees who beat the Assyrian-Greeks. And even though, today, this anniversary of the Yom Kippur War is a national holiday in Egypt, that is yet more Muslim and Arab nationalist propaganda because Israel did, in fact, win the war, and Egypt lost. Big time.

The big mistake here was that Kissinger, in concentrating on his pan-Arabist pandering, failed to see what was going on here. Egypt was getting all of its support and weaponry from the Soviets, and this was a proxy War between Communism and the West (Israel) in the Middle East. No surprise, though, since Kissinger always did the wrong thing while occupying power (and later while out of power and accepting Saudi petro-dollars for his lobbying efforts). Kissinger, always a legend in his own mind, believed that, while serving as a negotiator between the sides after the war, he helped lessen Soviet influence in Egypt, and, therefore, the Arab Muslim Mid-East. Not so, because as we know, the Soviets long had their hands deep into the Mid-East and its many deleterious hydra–Syria, the PLO, Libya, Yemen, and so on.

Despite Israel winning the war–and with it the territorial and other spoils of victory–the country was constantly forced to self-amputate and “give back” what was hers. That is a demand never made on any other country, Western or otherwise. Israel has since given up the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt, and is under constant pressure to give the Golan Heights up to Syria. This is despite the fact that Israel won these lands in 1967’s Six Day War (another war initiated by the Egyptians and Syrians) and the fact that Egypt and Syria started the Yom Kippur War to reconquer those lands, which they failed to do. It is a sign of weakness and mush to give up these lands despite winning several wars over them. A sign of Western weakness vis-a-vis Islam, Muslims, and their never-ending jihad.

Reader Tov Klein has more insight in comparing the Israeli War of Atonement, as the war is also known, with today, and how the Jews haven’t learned:

Debbie:

As October approaches and it will soon be the 40th anniversary of the Yom Kippur war, I must make a statement.

From what I read, the troops were thinned at both the Sinai and Golan. The Mossad warned of imminent attacks. Our good Jewish Secretary of State [Kissinger], said that Israel should get a bloody nose. I believe that the cabal of scum–Kissinger and [Israeli General Moshe] Dayan–agreed with this strategy.

My father believes it was a miracle. 2,600+ soldiers died in the initial attack. It was easier to mobilize the troops due to the holiday, which I believe was known. That is why it was agreed upon. Israel was peace starved, which is a shame, because they now had defensible boarders. The US was pressuring them, just as now, and they took the gamble.

What happens in the future? They surrender Sinai, and later Gaza, all to better the “American interests” in the Middle East. To put it bluntly, America pimped Israel, which is a shame for all the Israelis and all of us North Americans!

Do we have no choice?

Sadly, he is right. And, unfortunately, we have no choice in the matter. Israel’s borders are now less defensible than ever, and if it is pressured to give up more land in the waning days of Obama in yet another misguided “peace” deal, it will be a disaster.

Those were the days–after Israel’s victory in the Six Day War of 1967, the Yom Kippur War of 1973, and it’s successful raid on Entebbe in 1976–when Israel and the Jews were respected worldwide. Now, as Israel appeases and speaks loudly but carries a toothpick, anti-Semitism is at its highest levels in decades. Israel and the Jewish people are seen as weak and appeasers.

The lessons of the Yom Kippur War–40 year later–still haven’t been learned by those in power.

How true and nauseatingly hypocritical. Like when we helped filthy GB defend the “Falklands.”

DSR: Great minds think alike, as I was thinking of the Falklands, but that is not even a good comparison, since Israel has always been Jewish land and Jews have lived there for thousands of years. The Falklands is hardly British land by any stretch, and its “connection” to the Brits is tangential at best. DS

Thank you for the continuing education, Debbie. That war occurred shortly before my 17th birthday. How time flies, and how true the saying that the more things change, the more they stay the same. One of the biggest shames regarding Kissinger is that he is not only a legend in his own mind, but in the minds of many misguided Americans as well.

Thanks for keeping it straight. Time Marches On*, as we and the rest of the human race continue our march toward attempted self-annihilation. Thank God for His existence.

What Debbie failed to mention was the reasons that started the YKwar and the reasons behind the outcome. Despicable, narrowminded, and ethnocentric bigots such as Debbie likes to depict the war as savage arab hoardes attempting to destroy the jewish people.

But thel facts show in the beginning the indigenous Palestinian population welcomed Jewish migration into Palestine. However well documented jewish terrorism and massacres perpetrated by the Irgun and other groups murdering and blowing up Palestinians in their attempt to eradicate and ethnically cleanse the country is what started the war. And thanks to US military and financial aid to these criminals is what ensured their victory. Debbie you are a disgusting vile racist pig. A complete embarrassment to the jewish people and judiasim. But I understand your need to demonize the Palestinians considering the whole world is opening their eyes to the many crimes committed against humanity by the israeli govt.and no amount of hasbara will close the flood gates

The Soviet Union wanted Israel destroyed because Israel’s modern rebirth was a testament to the truth of the Bible and its prophecies concerning Israel. If Israel was destroyed, the God of the Bible was made a liar.

Kissinger initially opposed Reagan’s rejection of detente and his confronting the Soviets. He sold out South Vietnam. I saw him recently on Sean Hannity’s show where Hannity thought he was wonderful. It shows a lot about Hannity’s judgment. Kissinger is no great American and is a self-hating Jew. He has a lot of company out there.

Obama is pro-Muslim and anti-Western, hates America and hates those of European descent. He sees Israel as an illegitimate result of Western power imposed on the Muslims, who were always peaceful until the Pope began the Crusades. (The Pope began the Crusades as a defensive move against Muslim’s extirpation of Christianity in the Middle East and its threat to Europe). The Papacy may have saved Western Civilization by doing this.

God will preserve Israel just as he has preserved the Jews and their customs. Their survival for 2 thousand years from attempted extermination by Muslims, Christian Protestants and Catholics, along with the communists, socialists and Kissingers of the world, is a miracle and proof that the God of the Old Testament – the same God of the New Testament – will fulfill the prophecies that Jerusalem will be the City of God, Whose Son will rule with a rod of iron from there.

CC: Hannity is a know-nothing moron who is completely ignorant, unless he’s rattling off talking points someone else wrote that he’s been given or plagiarizing others’ work, like mine (which he did repeatedly). He also said Kim Kardashian is a great role model and has a great head on her shoulders. And he thinks Ted Koppel and Pat Buchanan are great and promoted Buchanan’s Hitler book. That he is also ignorant on Kissinger is no surprise. I’d be surprised if he actually knew something about anything, other than how to defraud people via his “Freedom Concert” scams. DS

Another lesson about attorneys from someone who has worked for a LOT of them. They don’t sleep much. Debbie posting replies at 2 a.m.

You sure Hannity didn’t say Kim Kardashian is a great ROLL (like in the hay) model, Debbie? ROTFLMAO!!! I doubt that as well, LOL!!! Hannity didn’t seem to realize his “You’re a great American” act tired about the third time he said it. He’s a robot, that’s it. Can’t open up a TV show without turning to a famous country singer and uttering the phrase. Ugh. Shame. The lack of sincerity just turns people like me off, who want to believe some of these people are real.

Not surprised, really. God had a rather difficult time with the prophet Jonah. Bad enough he had to learn his lesson by being slowly digested by a whale or whale shark, but then he still proved to be a rather “free spirited” sort.

At the end of the whole episode, Jonah gets angry because God kills the fig tree he was shading himself under. God says to him, Sup witchoo dawg? You’re worried about a fig tree? I sent you to warn a city, where there are SIXTY THOUSAND PEOPLE WHO DON’T KNOW THEIR RIGHT HAND FROM THEIR LEFT!

One of my favorite passages in the Bible. And just goes to show the condition of the human race. Guy has a job as a prophet but he decides to take a cruise. Finally, the boss catches up to him, and after he finishes his job, he contends with the boss telling him, ‘I know you’re a good dude and you’d do the right thing, that’s why I went on the cruise.’ Meantime, we have a city with enough people to fill Yankee Stadium who don’t know their right hand from their left.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. That’s why the human race will have to learn the hard way.

Hope you get some sleep, Debbie. Take care of yourself. America and the world needs you, despite the Hannibots in our midst. As a matter of fact, it’s BECAUSE of the Hannibots in our midst. Sucks to be an American these days, . . .

as our chickens come home to roost. I don’t need to be reminded, because the roosters around here crow at just about every hour of the day and night.

There is a novel I read a while ago. It was about a Secretary of State who was considered a genius. Whenever there was a problem in the world, he prompted solutions that were very complex, and considered ingenious by everybody.

But it turned out, somehow, that after each of these ‘solutions’, the Communists became stronger. It turned out, at the end of the book, that the Secretary of State was a Communist. While I have no basis for saying Kissinger was a Communist, the novel’s theme, after making adjustments for conditions on the ground, seems characteristic of much of the diplomacy of the past century. Certainly FDR’s and Obama’s, a considerable part of Ford’s, Bush I’s, and Clinton’s, and that of Congress during much of the time since the mid 1960s.

Little Al on October 7, 2013 at 12:56 am

I don’t necessarily mean that all or most of those practicing diplomacy were Communists or equivalent, but they were certainly often influenced by interests other than the best welfare of the American people.

Little Al on October 7, 2013 at 1:00 am

And that has been the great deception, Little Al, the Communist indoctrination of the American citizenry, without the Americans citizenry being aware of it. That’s how great deceptions are carried out. If you are aware of the deception, you can’t be deceived, but the American people have been deceived badly. Don’t be shy, because your premise is all too correct.

There is plenty of evidence to suggest this premise is correct. I understand that the old guard Soviets changed their tactics some time around the collapse of the old Soviet Union. Rather than try to go head up with the U.S., they merely brought their message to us in much more subtle ways. It is my understanding this was in fact stated in Communist Party literature of a quarter century or so ago.

The way to win is simple: never give up or give in.

The Israeli Protective Wall is fantastic.

Occam's Tool on October 7, 2013 at 5:46 am

O’sT, I beg to differ. Yes, the barrier keeps out many terrorists. But besides the fact that the separation barrier is sending the Arabs a message that all land outside of it will soon belong to them, hiding behind a wall is no way to defend a nation. This is not the middle ages. Walls can be over-flown by aircraft and missiles. The only good defense, as always, is a good offense. Take the fight to the enemy to safeguard your civilian population, and fight until the enemy can no longer mount an attack against you, or their unconditional surrender. What is missing today from the aftermath of 1967 and 1973 is the complete fear that the Arabs had then of the Jews. They saw Israel’s military might, and especially the Israeli will to fight, and cowered in fear. Israel loses its legitimacy when it allows the U.S. to determine its ability to defend itself, and when it signals that its ancestral heartland is merely “occupied” territory.

phillip slepian on October 7, 2013 at 9:19 am

Thank you Philip. That is exactly right. We have set up a “national” border. As Sean R always says, “a nation is defined by its borders…” The wall is a disaster but even many people in the Shomron here don’t see that. They like the false feeling of security it gives them so they can live their suburban lives and not defend the Land like true “settlers.”

And thank you Debbie for showing Meir’s true colors and not painting her as the Jewish Joan of Arc as so many people do.

Islam does like to tout accomplishments that are often non-existent. Israel pushed back and demolished Arab forces that were on paper far superior to those possessed by Israel in 1967 and 1973.

As for Henry Kissinger, he is one of the most overrated foreign policy analysts in the 20th and 21st centuries. His accomplishments include knifing South Vietnam in the back, We could also look at Salt 1, in which the redoubtable Henry Kissinger allowed the Soviet Union to effectively gain a permanent lead in nuclear armaments versus the United States. No, Henry Kissinger was not some shrewd hero.

worry01 on October 7, 2013 at 9:29 am

The Book “Good as Gold” written by Joseph Heller, writes about how Jews in the government gave up their identity to fit in the power structure.

It is a novel, based in large part on the ever large, ever dense Henry Kissinger, a man completely devoid of morals or sensibilities, and a tool of the Rockefellers. The ultimate whore.

The very anti-Semitic CIA had informed the Israelis and the US government that no attack by the Arabs was imminent. Unfortunately, Nixon advised by and encouraged by “Adolph” Kissinger, strongly advised the Israelis against a pre-emptive strike, a mistake that haunts them to this day. Nixon after being stalled by Kissinger, Nixon, going against his advisors, sent massive aid to Israel (He liked Golda Meir…in the 1950’s, she had even babysitted Nixon’s children when she was in the Israeli embassy in Washington DC).

While Israel owes the US so, so much, they should recognize that the US will never use military force to defend Israel if Israel is on the brink of destruction. The Jews are on their own.

Yes, in spite of the anti-Semitic cries by limp dicks like Buchanan, the US never entered a war at the behest of Israel. In fact, let’s look at who we have fought for:

Bosnian Muslims
Kosovan Muslims
Libyan Muslims
Kuwaiti Muslims
Iraqi Muslims
Lebanese Muslims
the PLO Muslims
Afghani Muslims

Just remember that next time someone claims that the US is fighting Israel’s wars. And if no one is around to witness the conversation, follow up your rebuttal by kicking the person in their testicles.

Jonathan E. Grant on October 7, 2013 at 10:07 am

One of Israel’s biggest threats today is from left wing Jews, who worship at the feet of the Democratic Party instead of worshipping G-d. They promote “J Street” an organization funded by the Saudi Arabians and by George Soros, which claims to be pro-Israel but has never so much as condemned a terrorist act without equivocating (ie., the victims are to blame).

So many left wing reform Jews (JINOS) put Obama before their own survival.

Real Jews and Real Christians put G-d before all else, and recognize the centrality of a Jewish Israel to the well being of the world and of Western ideals.

martin on October 7, 2013 at 10:58 am

Let’s see, their armies were surrounded (the Israelis could have destroyed most of Egypt’s armies, but Henry “Adolph” Kissingrear stopped them), the Israelis held more land than before the war began, the Israelis were a few miles from Cairo and Damascus.

What they did win was world approval and the PR war. Europe, including England, cut off all arms to Israel and the African nations were oil blackmailed or bought off into cutting off relations with Israel.

Europe even prevented US planes from flying over their airspace to re-arm Israel. Europe which was under US military protection. Europe whose collective armies would have been overrun by Soviet troops had we not been there. Europe, who was rescued by the US during WWI, after WWI (starvation threat), WWII, after WWII (Marshall plan and food aid), etc. Our allies in Europe are only our allies when they want us to protect them. This is why I believe the US should pull our troops out of Europe and just keep one forward navy/air force base in a country of our choosing there.

During the Yom Kippur war, the Europeans wanted another few million Jews wiped off the face of the earth, just like they still do. Yup, 2000 years of European anti-Semitism and still going strong.

Jonathan E. Grant on October 7, 2013 at 12:17 pm

Jon, You’re correct regarding our so-called “friends” in Europe who refused to allow the resupply of the IDF by the USA during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. However, if memory serves me well, I do recall one exception to that prohibition. It was Portugal who allowed the USA to make intermediate stops in the Portuguese owned Azores to refuel and subsequently make their way to Israel.

Israel continues to make mistakes. Especially after the six day war. When they had the chance to destroy the al aqua mosque and rebuild the temple. Instead that idiot Moshe Dayan has sympathy for the evil Muslims and gave them hope. While Jews today are forbidden from praying there to appease Islam.

What type of idiot wins a war and acts like it lost? We certainly would never see or here the Saudis beng orced to give back Medina after the evil prophet killed the Jewish tribes livng there. You can bet many Jewish artifacts were lost and destroyed by the Muslims after taking control.

I was fortunate enough to visit Israel the Decmbr following the Yom Kippur war. I got to see burned out Russian tanks that were destroyed by Israel.

As for Kissinger, he is a bum and can not pass away soon enough.

How does one explain Henry Kissinger, or as he insists on calling himself, “Dr. Henry Kissinger?” A reputed master of realpolitik, he hasn’t acted on behalf of U.S. interests too often.

Seek on October 7, 2013 at 12:52 pm

The Yom Kippur wasn’t Israel’s biggest mistake. That happened in August 1970, when Israel gave into US pressure not to pre-empt an Egyptian violation of the cease-fire agreement – when Egypt moved surface-to-air missiles into a demilitarized zone. Israeli passivity at the time ultimately cost Israel thousands of lives later.

What’s the lesson? Treating violations of agreements as jaywalking offenses can lead to major disasters later. Its a miracle Israel wasn’t destroyed in 1973. The other lesson to take away from the aftermath of the Yom Kippur War is not to rely on miracles.

NormanF on October 7, 2013 at 1:24 pm

I clearly remember this war from when I was a kid. But I’ve always known it at the October War or the 1973 Arab–Israeli War. This is the first time I’ve heard it referred as the Yom Kippur War – I’ll keep this in mind here on. What stands out in my mind most was the Israeli tactical victory against overwhelming odds. As I think back to those days, I recall the Syrian and Egyptian atrocities committed on Isreali POW’s. Israeli soldiers who had been blindfolded with their hands bound and summarily execute. It is estimated that the Egyptians killed about 200 Israeli soldiers who had surrendered on sight. I’ve oftened wondered, what would the atrocities have been if Isreal lost the war knowing what we know about Arabs.

Since January 2011, Egypt had 1,055 of these tunnels destroyed, the news agency “Ma’an” reported, citing the commander of the Egyptian border guards, Ahmad Ibrahim. Israel’s biggest mistake was attacking the USS Liberty in the Mediterranean Sea in 1967 and killing 34 and wounding 174 of our Sailors. We need to know why they committed that act of war against our troops. Lyndon Johnson covered it up, and it appears that our government is still covering it up.

TCP on October 8, 2013 at 12:16 am

Actually, this has been well settled, and some US government records slipped out that revealed that Israel was telling the truth.

LBJ explicitly told the Israelis that no US ships were off the coast of Israel/Egypt. Israel saw a ship, and started bombing it, assuming with all reasonableness it was an Egyptian intelligence vessel. They then saw the US flag flying and thought the Egyptians were violating international law by flying another country’s flag.

It was not until an exchange of phone calls with the White House that the truth was known, and the Israelis called off their attack, and paid damages to the families of those killed.

Israel had reason to fear false flagging. Six years later, during the 1973 war, Syrians wore Israeli military uniforms, got within the Israeli ranks on the Golan Heights, and started slaughtering the Israelis.

Anti-Semites love to bring up the Liberty over and over again. It was a tragic mistake, and it pales in comparison to the number of Americans slaughtered by Arabs and Muslims.

Now, why don’t you ask why we never acted against Saudi Arabia for harboring terrorists, including the Bin Laden family which continued to support him after 9/11, and why did they Harbor Idi Amin, who killed a number of Americans. Why did Bill Clinton welcome Arafat with open arms over 20 times at the White House, when Arafat had killed a number of Americans, or ordered their deaths, like the wheelchair bound Leon Klinghoffer?

Jonathan E. Grant on October 8, 2013 at 12:37 am

Wow, talk about revisionist history. Israel was about to be routed as Moshe Dayan noted when he said “the third temple is about to fall”, code for Israel is about to be completely vanquished. This led to Israel considering using its nukes and that led to MASSIVE American help, termed Operation Nickel Grass. That turned the tide in Israel’s favor.

Power comes from numbers. The bigger the Jewish population, the more their power would be. Especially in the USA. It is imperative that Jewish women have a lot of babies to increase or maintain the Jewish demography. But alas, the Jews being among the most educated, have few children. The only segment that have quite a number of children are the Orthodox. Thus far, they have helped maintain the numerical statusquo. But for how long? In meantime, here in NYC I see more and more educated Jewish women especially the liberal kind, though still brimming with Zionisn, but choose not to raise families. This is bad omen….

Rex on October 8, 2013 at 1:45 am

Tov Klein mentioned that the US pressured Israel into giving away Gaza. As I recall, that was entirely Sharon’s idea which shows that we are our own worst enemy. Fortunately, we have the power to change this through our elections- there is an exceptional honest, brilliant person- Moshe Feiglin who has been slowly but steadily gaining power within the Likud to be the next head of Likud. Without change in leadership, you can be sure that nothing will ever change. When enough people come to this realization, we will finally move forward in a positive way.

Rachelle on October 8, 2013 at 8:31 am

Here’s something that will truly offend everyone…

If it weren’t for Sho’ah, would modern Israel have behaved differently?

Would it have been as liberal and “secular” as Kissinger, or would it have a “fuck you” attitude towards its Arab and Euro neighbours?

Sadly, all you have to do is go back to Antiquity and see Greco-Roman/Jewish relations. Had the Hebrew kings any resolve and foresight, we wouldn’t be using this alphabet to express ourselves.

I always thought that Kissinger was such a nebbish creature. I didn’t expect to see DS paint him as a KAPO. But I guess optics with a clear mind brings out the best and worst in us high-order primates.

As history has shown, only Jews can save Jews. No-one else. Not even God.

One thing overlooked in the comments above – Anwar Sadat. As Debbie rightly pointed out, he was eager to complete what Nasser did. He was a Nazi sympathizer and really got a steal out of Camp David.

He actively supported Jihadis in Egypt, including those who turned around to assassinate him, and had he survived, he’d probably have used the time to build up – this time w/ US support – and attack Israel again.
