Sheldon Adelson Said What?! I Wish the Man Who Helped Finance Romney Ran for Office

By Debbie Schlussel

Throughout 2012–before and AFTER the Presidential elections–I heard from many whiny anti-Semites on the right who blamed the Jews for Obama’s financing and re-election. I asked them if they were willing to give back the $100 million JEWISH casino mogul Sheldon Adelson gave to finance Mitt Romney’s campaign for President and those of many Congressional Republicans. And, of course, there usually wasn’t a response. Full disclosure: I’ve met and know Adelson, and he maxed out in donating to my campaign for the Michigan House of Representatives when I ran and lost by just one vote. He’s a very cool guy. So proud to be American and so proud to be Jewish, too. I don’t agree with him on everything (he’s socially more liberal than I am), but on the important business, national security, and Middle East issues, he’s spot on (except the “two-state” pollution business). And I think the son of a Lithuanian-born cab driver (and publisher of Israel’s most popular newspaper, Israel Hayom [Israel Today]) would have been a better candidate for office than Romney and many of that ilk. In case you haven’t read his interview in The New York Times and another in the Los Angeles Times, they are great stuff. I like him because he is willing to tell the stark, honest truth, whereas many American Jews of his stature and prominence are far too wimpy and politically correct to do so. Here are the important excerpts:

sheldonadelson

New York Times quotes Adelson . . .

He trashed the prospects for peace with the Palestinians. He tried to school American reporters on the history of the Middle East. . . .

Asked about Secretary of State John Kerry’s plan to infuse as much as $4 billion into the economy of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, much of it to build tourism, Mr. Adelson responded, “Why would I want to invest money with people who want to kill my people?”

“How can you move a ball forward when the Israelis legitimately want peace and the Palestinians want Israel piece by piece?” he said of Mr. Kerry’s broader effort to revive the stalemated peace process. “Have you ever heard any Palestinian say, ‘We have to give up our hope of destroying Israel in favor of living in peace.’ ?”

As for the Palestinians, Mr. Adelson said, “They teach their children that Jews are descended from swine and apes, pigs and monkeys.” Then he questioned their existence as a distinct ethnic group, saying they were “southern Syrians” or Egyptians until Yasir Arafat, who was leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization, “came along with a pitcher of Kool-Aid and gave it to everybody to drink and sold them the idea of Palestinians.”

These ideas, staples of the far right, are deeply offensive to the Palestinians — perhaps partly the point.

So how would Mr. Adelson resolve the long-running conflict? “Put up a big fence around our territory and say to the guys over there, your trucks can’t go over our land if you carry weapons, your planes can’t go over our airspace if they carry weapons,” he said. “How do you recognize a partner for peace when all they want to do is kill you and your people?”

Los Angeles Times . . .

Casino billionaire and Israel supporter Sheldon Adelson said Tuesday that U.S. efforts to restart Mideast peace talks are doomed until Palestinians accept Israel as a Jewish state. Speaking during a break at the Jerusalem International Tourism Summit, Adelson, 80, also said he would not be investing any of his fortune in Secretary of State John F. Kerry’s new $4-billion private investment plan to develop the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

What do you think about what Secretary Kerry is doing? Is there any chance to move the ball forward on the peace process?

I won’t comment about Kerry. But I’ll ask you: How can you move the ball forward when the Israelis legitimately want peace and the Palestinians want Israel, piece by piece. I don’t know one Israeli that doesn’t want peace. It’s the other side that doesn’t want peace. When they teach their children that Jews are descended from swine and apes, pigs and monkeys, and their charter calls for the destruction of Israel … how are you going to have peace? I’m all in favor of peace. I don’t care if it’s [a] two-state solution or not. Everybody deserves to live in peace. But I don’t see the leadership from the so-called Palestinians that says to their people, “We have to prepare to give up our charter that calls for the destruction of the state of Israel.” Have you heard any Palestinian say we have to give up our hope of destroying Israel in favor of living in peace?

I don’t think the destruction of Israel is in the minds of a lot of Palestinians.

Really? How naïve and how ignorant can you be? I don’t understand why they teach their children to hate and kill Jews.

A lot of Israeli Jews are concerned about what the lack of peace is doing to the Jewish, democratic state. Are you worried that if there is no two-state solution, it will threaten Israel?

That’s completely irrelevant and that’s propaganda-ish. It’s plain stupidity to recognize a partner that wants to kill you [in order to achieve] peace.

So what’s the solution?

Put a big fence around our country and say to the guys over there that the trucks can’t go over our land if they carry weapons, the planes can’t go over our airspace if they carry weapons. Period. [Tell them,] you want to have a state, go do it the way you want.

Kerry is proposing a $4-billion private investment plan for the Palestinian territories and says it’s important to coordinate the tourism industries of Israel, West Bank and Jordan. Would you want to participate in that?

Why would I want to invest money with people who want to kill me? Of course I won’t be part.

Spot on, baby.

Adelson, who is a very energetic 80 years old, says 80 is the new 60. And maybe he’s right. At least in his case.

Sheldon Adelson. Mensch.

I_AM_ME on May 29, 2013 at 4:59 pm

He’s very right…. Adelson is smarter than a lot of people in politics and business and he has sound judgment.

People should listen to him more. Debbie, thanks for bringing these interviews to our attention.

At 80, Sheldon Adelson is more wise than many people half his age. And I agree with everything he says here!

NormanF on May 29, 2013 at 5:06 pm

The criticism of Adelson is in the tradition of the criticism of the Rothchilds a century or so ago for being rich and successful. Antisemites on both the right and the left criticized the Rothchilds during that era.

It is worse today because there are so many self-hating Jews joining in the denunciation (I don’t really think it rises to the level of criticism) of Adelson. While there was some of this in the 19th century, it is worse today.

But the history of antisemitism is taught so infrequently today, that this is not obvious to most people.

Little Al on May 29, 2013 at 5:23 pm

Interesting. Nice to see a mega money man with some common sense and a set of b—- as well.

samurai on May 29, 2013 at 6:05 pm

The so called Palestinians are neither entitled to nor deserving of any part of the land of Israel which includes Judea, Samaria, and Gaza. It’s painful to see a good man like Adelson agreeable to the contrary. Aside from the truth and justice of it, taking that perverse position is politically poisonous.

If that historically Jewish territory is legitimately seen as Arab land then all of the Jewish People’s land trembles insecurely. Giving away a room in its house–to a mortal enemy, no less– can only lead Israel down the path to greater misery. Gaza, for example. No good can come of devotion to pie in the sky abstract principles regardless of real life experience.

lee of the lower case "l" on May 29, 2013 at 6:45 pm

They don’t deserve a state, period.

Jews can try to give away the Land but it fails because this is against the Will Of Heaven – and as long as the Jews rebel against G-d – they will suffer for it.

When they finally listen to Him, then they will have true peace.

NormanF on May 29, 2013 at 7:09 pm

Thank you Sheldon! What a mensch! BIG CAHONES, speaks the truth. Kahane was right (& I was wrong at the time).

Love, Mamala

Mamala on May 29, 2013 at 7:11 pm

Those crazy “liberals” can’t make a factual counter argument but they can call you right wing.
Luckily for them the schools and media have been reinforcing the idea of what that’s supposed to mean for the last few decades so every bozo now knows he can stop paying attention and go back to leftist la-la land dream world where Sheldon Adelson is a nasty kill joy who should be ignored like a sign carrying flat-earther.

Happy, happy, joy, joy.

Here’s what is less so.
“Whiny anti-Semites on the right” are really the least of the Jew’s problems these days. Why? Because as cool as Sheldon Adelson may be a 100 million is peanuts in terms of the support Obama gets from a huge plethora of donors and organizations like Google.
The president who has done more to isolate Israel and destroy any long term prospect of peace or at least semi-stability in the Arab world than any other before him. The president who hides behind official policy and says “who me?”.

Why do Jews support Obama? Well because they imagine that if they try to make America more “liberal” then their Jewishness will become increasingly irrelevant and that they will enjoy “liberal” and principled protection. Fail.
Laughably they also expect some kind of good will, loyalty or gratitude in response for their efforts. Fail.
In this category belong such smug judicious clowns as Alan Dershowitz amongst many others.
The Jew’s biggest problem always has been, is and always will be.
They don’t know who their enemies are and when to take them seriously.

Zarus on May 29, 2013 at 7:27 pm

What ever happened to Sheldon’s lawsuit against the Democratic Jewish Committee (or whatever it is called) for libel?

Also, The Venetian (Adelson’s baby) is the most beautiful casino on the strip.

Jonathan E. Grant on May 29, 2013 at 8:52 pm

Very cool dude.

DS_ROCKS! on May 29, 2013 at 8:52 pm

He has stated the matter quite plainly. Until the Palestinians give up their desire to destroy or drive out the Jews, there will be no peace. Secretary of State John Kerry’s notions about shoveling $4 billion dollars into the area for tourism and other purposes is simply money wasted.

Worry01 on May 29, 2013 at 9:09 pm

Great man, Mr. Adelson. I hope he has a food taster.

I know an Israeli Jew who has lived in Queens most of his life. Equates Rabbi Kahane with Hitler. I’m afraid his kind is prevalent in NYC these days.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on May 29, 2013 at 9:16 pm

Alfredo. Wait ’till JINO’s like him elect Little Anthony Weiner mayor of NYC. Bet you a steak dinner he wins the election. Restaurant of your choice. Little Anthony is in the same genre as other democrat (Scumbag) “Heroes.” Clinton, Frank, Gerry Studds, Spitzer, etc. How can he lose with his “Resume?”

Victoryman on May 30, 2013 at 9:49 am

It’s no bet, Victoryman. I have no doubt Anthony’s Weiner is going to win the election, or at least make a very good showing, and win in four years. I even advised a friend in the current mayoral administration that he was going to win, wherein that person scoffed at the idea.

It’s what Rush has always said, the Demmicans promote their low lives and incompetents, and indeed they do. Latest polls show Anthony’s Weiner is rising fast, WITHOUT a male enhancement product.

Too bad about your offer. I love to eat, and that was a nice gesture, but I would be unable to reciprocate as I am a pauper. Also, it’s agin mah ‘ligion to gamble.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on May 31, 2013 at 11:17 am

I would have to agree wholeheartedly with Debbie on this one. That would literally be suicide.

Reminds me of a political party In India that my grandfather just abhorred. They advocated and passed a bill that paid Muslims to go to Mecca for Haj. They also reserves seats for them in Civil servant jobs.Appeasing a radical group or giving the special treatment only makes the situation worse at the ground level.

Perhaps Kerry thinks that making that area developed would solve all the problems. Seems Chamberlainesque to me.

@Sanjay
Ha ha doesn’t matter Sanjay because the people of Gaza don’t want money they want the destruction of Israel.
So they reject Kerry’s development panacea.

Poor Kerry and Tony Blair now have to pack up their “groundbreaking” plan and go back home to lilliput liberal idiot land where they can devote their full attention to the long term destruction of their nation states instead of the short term demolition of Israel which is more fun and garners more international idiotic prestige with bodies such as the Nobel Peace prize committee.

@Samjay
Palestinian Authority (PA) economic adviser Mohammad Mustafa said: “The Palestinian leadership will not offer political concessions in exchange for economic benefits.”

Of course I’m sure they may find a way to get the money without concessions given the wilful well meaning obtuseness of Western leadership at which point the armament process can resume regardless.

A bunch of American Jews give the palestinians a $10 million hydroponics facility, up and running, to promote jobs and such. They destroyed the place in less than a day. stripped the building for parts and destroyed what they didn’t take. So much for peace.

ender on May 29, 2013 at 10:19 pm

Shouldn’t it be self-evident by now to ANYONE with a functioning cerebral cortex that the only real problem in Israel is Arab Muslim hatred of Jews? What else? Take that out of the equation, going all the way back to the original partition proposal, and what problem have you got? Like the man said, Israelis want peace and they want Israel piece by piece. Love the polite but blunt: “Really? How naïve and how ignorant can you be?” Tell it like it is, Shelly! I’m gonna make it a point to lose money in his casino next time I’m in Vegas.

Joe Guiney on May 29, 2013 at 10:25 pm

@ender
Palestinian leadership would have destroyed the facility on principle because they don’t want their power base eroded or their whole rationale for existing in the first place.

Western leadership doesn’t care because they’ve gone goo goo ga ga on the money pump solution.

Didn’t work in Africa, won’t work in Gaza for pretty much the same reasons but they’d do absolutely anything not to face the real problem.
Unfortunately revolving door politicians are never around long enough to get their own fingers burnt in the fire.
Except for Tony Blair, he’s desperate to regain some recognition after Iraq.

Zarus on May 29, 2013 at 10:34 pm

Joe, you hit the nail on the head. But the problem is a PROPERLY functioning cerebral cortex. These ideological masochists don’t have it. People used to laugh at Dana Carvey’s Church Lady character whenever she used to say Satan was the problem or cause of this or that. Problem is, it’s no joke. But you need a properly functioning cerebral cortex to take the existence of Satan seriously. Well schooled conservative Jews do. Liberal types like so many of my lefty friends in NYC don’t.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on May 29, 2013 at 10:36 pm

Huh?!

No two-state solution? Well, I know your not insane enough to think a one-state solution would work. I guess I have no idea what you mean then.

Good for Adelson; I am proud to share the planet with men like this. He should expand on his “swine and apes, pigs and monkeys” comment, also pointing out that the ‘sweet and cuddley ROP; also despises man’s best friend, the simple loyal, friendly, (and civilization’s historically indispensable livestock herding partner) the simple dog.

It’s the oil, stupid!

Kerry knows it, too. The last great energy policy proposal was offered at the 2004 Democratic Convention which nominated Kerry for President. During that campaign, Kerry constantly kvetched about George Bush’s chummy relations with “The Saudi Royal Family”.

Now, Kerry heads an agency that is bought and paid for by the Saudi Royal Family.

The Arabs are fanatics. Forget about the Fakestinians for a minute. Look at the other 21 Arab League States. Nobody listens to reason. Nobody cares about creature comfort and affluence. It’s all about being “in control”. Virtually all Arab League States are in turmoil. Those that aren’t maintain stability through massive influx of petrodollars. So much so that $4 Billion is chump change. The Saudis buy $4 Billion in U.S. treasury notes and the U.S. tries to pacify the Fakestinians with it.

In the meantime, the U.S. allows the Saudi dominated OPEC Cartel to rip off Americans and the entire world to maintain the status quo. America’s hardships pale in comparison to the massive starvation, disease and hardship other countries face as a result of this evil pact.

This can’t last forever. Eventually, somebody’s survival instinct will break the Saudi-OPEC stranglehold. Don’t be surprised if Israel leads the way. Israel is the ONE industrialized nation whose leaders have nothing to gain by enriching anti-Semitic Saudis. Whether it’s solar power, natural gas, shale oil research, electric cars or whatever, Israel is the only industrialized nation whose leaders are not offered the “Saudi retirement plan”.

Debbie’s buddy may talk frankly about anti-Semitism, but he won’t touch the “3rd rail” of Saudi petro-dollar influence on the U.S. State Department. That’s the real reason he’s lived to be 80.

BTW, there’s nothing wrong with the two-state solution. It’s the THREE-state solution (Israel, Jordan and “Palestine”) that’s the problem.

One more point I’d like to make. Yasser Arafat could not have succeeded in pushing the concept of “Palestine” without massive KGB funding. Sadly, when the USSR folded, the Saudi-dominated U.S. State Dept. picked up Arafat’s tab. The Bush 41 Administration was happy to oblige. Clinton was willing to accept the “Saudi retirement plan”. Bush Jr. had no problem with helping his Saudi partners. Leftwing O’Bama is “totally cool” with KGB policy and “the Saudi retirement plan”. The United States will not break this trend. Israel will act alone to break this cycle because there are still enough Jews there who do not want to be mass-murdered.

There is NO Santa Claus on May 30, 2013 at 12:16 am

@Santa No Claus,
Yes if Iran doesn’t break the cycle first by nuking the Saudis or whoever.

Obama’s not just an extension of the “Saudi retirement plan” because he’s quite happy with the “United States honour killing plan”.

Zarus on May 30, 2013 at 12:38 am

Think Obama has a date named after him in Egypt because they like him?
No they’re racist. And that’s well known so think about the following Hadith in Islam…

Allah’s Apostle said, “You should listen to and obey, your ruler even if he was an Ethiopian (black) slave whose head looks like a raisin.”

Israel HaYom (Israel Today) is a good paper, and it is available (in part) in English online and I recommend it. Smart, sensible journalists and academics write for it. Naturally the loony self-loathing Israeli Left hate it and the fact that Israel HaYom is deservedly popular here.

Before we pat Mr Adelson on the back and say “Attanoy, Sheldon”, remember that Debbie mentioned that he favoured a “two-state” solution.

If he were to change his mind on that potentially deadly theory, them maybe I’ll join the whole “Mazel Tov” chorus.

Me – I’ll stick to the “One Israel or no Israel” line of thinking.

The Reverend Jacques on May 30, 2013 at 5:36 am

I recall that Mr. Adelson has been the recent subject of IRS tax investigations. Perhaps this should be looked at in the light of other recent IRS targeting of conservatives and Jewish organizations, among others. They did seem to be publicized right before the Presidential election.

Terrific Debbie. We need more people like Sheldon Adelson. Thanks for posting this and I will most certainly share.

Naomi R. on May 30, 2013 at 9:08 am

Adelson may well be correct on Israel and on Jewish issues, but he is wrong on a ton, including gambling and social liberalism in general. And he also isn’t that much of a fiscally conservative/small government type in areas that don’t affect his business or his special interest concerns either.

I don’t see much difference between him and – say – Joe Lieberman and Arlen Specter. Hard for me to agree that we need more guys like Adelson when we have plenty in politics already.

Gerald on May 30, 2013 at 9:25 am

I’m not aware that Lieberman or Specter came out against the two-state solution. And it is odd (or maybe not so odd) that you are comparing Adelson with Lieberman and Specter(are all Jews the same?), rather than with Romney, as was the point of this post.

A responsive comment would have compared Adelson with Romney, rather than cherry-picking other Jewish politicians. And you managed to attack Adelson without addressing any of the substantive issues regarding his Mideast position that were discussed in the post.

And the other point of the post, again completely ignored by you, was the sizable contribution that Adelson, a Jewish Republican made to the Republican campaign. Given the Jewish desertion of Israel on a widespread basis, the point was that we need more prominent Jews who support Israel in action (i.e. contributions and supporting credible newspapers), rather than hollow words. Do you agree or disagree?

And I’m not aware of LIeberman or Specter supporting any decent newspapers.

But in this era of dumbing down, obfuscation becomes rather simple. As I’ve said before, in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

This happened at a mall in Canada:

Completely covered Muslim woman (in a burka) spews the following offensive and disgusting comment to “Jane”: “Why don’t you pull your skirt up higher so you can show your ass? Your clothing offends me.”

Jane’s response to the cloth-coffin: “Your clothing offends me, too, and I would gladly tell you face to face if only I could see it.”

Try this one out.
Here real live Muslims try to explain why their religion isn’t racist because even black people should be listened to if they’re in a leadership position.

Of course the idea that they would allow a black person to lead them is about as likely as them being lead by a raisin and is part of the joke.
It might also explain why there’s controversy about whether martyrs
get 72 virgins or 72 raisins when they are martyred and go to heaven.
72 raisins is probably code for 72 Ethiopian slaves so it all makes sense really.

Don’t laugh because as Khomeini said.
“There are no jokes in Islam. There is no humor in Islam. There is no fun in Islam. There can be no fun and joy in whatever is serious.” Ayatollah Khomeini, 1979

Seriously racist that is.

Mitt Romney should return every dime given to him Obama was easy pickens and he had him on the ropes after the first debate, but Romney backed off and let Obama bitch slap him, especially with all the fraudulent votes the democrats created out of the ether. All you need to do is bring up the military and the poor treatment they receive during democratic administrations and how Obama is practically shooting our troops himself with the lack of support they receive. Romney had Benghazi, fast and furious the tax scandal the Seal team 6 murders staring him in the face and he never used them. Democrates have progeny in the military just like republicans and neither side wants their lives wasted, even the inattentive voter understands that. So Romney let it go and we fall into the darkness like ship without a rudder. I hope the first thing Sheldon Adelson said to Mitt after the election was thanks pal for nothing.

Adelson wants open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens in America, but closed borders and ethnically based citizenship in Israel. He is pouring huge amounts of money into the Republican party to support amnesty and open borders. Immigration is a life and death survival issue for any society. Adelson is firmly on the side of wanting America as a Western country to die. That makes him not just wrong, but evil. It’s not a matter of him having some humanitarian principals that demand these positions either, as his totally opposite position on Israel’s borders demonstrate that he understands the consequences of immigration policy. The only explanation is that he wishes America’s traditional culture and people harm. To support or sympathize with such a man is something that no true conservative can do.
