VIDEO: Coolest Card Trick Ever (w/ a Kiss) – How Did He Do That?

By Debbie Schlussel

Since it’s Sunday, I thought you’d enjoy this fun video by magician Stuart Edge. Okay, so maybe it’s not the coolest card trick ever, but it’s a pretty good trick. But it’s got a tiny gross factor (at least for me ‘cuz I’d never kiss these total strangers (even for a magic trick–eeeuuuwww), but these girls were–predictably and a sign of the times–easy, and so they complied).

How do you think he did this trick? Any ideas? Does he have two of the same card and switch it at the last minute before the girl puts it in her mouth?

Wow. Pretty cool trick. Notice he isn’t asking any men to partake. Maybe it only works with women?

The best tricks are the ones where the magician holds the audience’s attention elsewhere. They aren’t that apparent and if you know how the trick works, its no longer magic! 🙂

Off topic – Your Day In The Religion Of Islamic Magic Tricks:

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=53b_1368938625

This happened recently in eastern Libya. A man was beheaded in the name of Islam. Al Qaeda distributes these Islamic “snuff” films with relish.

And remember, these are the liberal, freedom-loving Muslim rebels we supported there against the late Libyan dictator Moammar Qaddafi.

The Libyan Revolution worked out great that Islamic beheading has come back in style! This is what they all want no matter how much we keep on pretending how “moderate” they are. THIS_IS_ISLAM!

Meh. No offense Debbie, but as street slight-of-hand goes, I found that to be rather weak. He fiddles around with the deck before he puts the card in her mouth instead of inserting it right after she scribbles all over it. Obviously something is being switched at that moment.

For an example of not-so-good magic, followed by something genuinely difficult to figure out, click on the link below. The trick he does with the coins at around 2:55 is lame. I figured it out instantly. John F. Kennedy’s face has never appeared on a quarter, only a half-dollar. Those are obviously not real coins, and one coin is equipped with a north-pole magnet and is hollow. It sucks up another one equipped with a south pole magnet into it’s hollow underside when he taps the table.

The trick he does at the four minute mark however, is quite stunning:

As a magic practitioner and long-time fan of magic, I’m usually able to figure out the techniques behind most tricks. This card trick was pretty simple. It does involve some preparation and there is a slight-of-hand maneuver that you need to be able to do to perform the effect smoothly and convincingly.

This magician in this video isn’t bad, but I note, however, that he uses his right hand to completely covers the deck momentarily while the maneuver is executed, so the trick as not as effective as it could be if he had the skill to do it more out in the open. For example, three-card monte scammers use a related sleight skill, but they do it it in full view of the audience, which is how they persuade people to bet on what is a really a rigged game, because of the sleight-of-hand involved.

But rather than spoil the effect for those who prefer not to know “how it’s done,” here’s a tutorial video that someone made that explains the trick, although he’s not as clear as he could be. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecKU6ElCS7o

Also, let me point out that it’s also an illusion that the magician always got the girl participating in the trick to kiss him. You can be fairly sure that he failed to do that many times, but those failures didn’t end up on the video clip.

Finally, while were on this magic thing, one of the greatest theatrical experiences of my lifetime was seeing a special event in a small New York Club in Greenich Village as a very young man. One of the magicians performing was Richiardi, who was known at the time as one the greatest magicians of all time. A real magician’s magician. (Richardi was a big influence on David Copperfield, Penn & Teller, and Criss Angel, to name some contemporary magicians.) Although I knew how some things were done, others are a mystery to me to this day. Even other magicians in the audience were blown away by some of the tricks in his act. For example, he did the classic substitution trick where his assistant is tied up with rope and goes into one box on the stage, and then another assistant puts Richardi in the other box. Now, I happen to know that there were no stage traps and this was a very small club (though packed), and I was seated very up close. Yet after the assistants turned the boxes a couple of times, the one that had Richardi in it was opened, and out popped the assistant, unbound. Then, the box where the bound assistant was a few moments earlier is opened, and there is Richardi, now completely bound in rope! A stunning, swift, beautiful up-close illusion.

And just for the fun of it, here’s an old clip of Richardi performing one of his wonderful illusions. The assistant is a very young Cathy Lee Crosby, who became a TV actress.

That kid who dresses up as a car seat then freaks out McDonald’s clerks at the drive-thru is much more entertaining, IMO.

My darling Debbie, I have the answer, but I want to try it out on you!

I wonder how many of those women have boyfriends. And how their boyfriends feel about them kissing a random guy on the street.

Eww. If my girlfriend did that I would dump her.

I am offended by this heterosexual kissing. It is gross to see the opposite sex kissing each other.
