WSJ Columnist: Boston Muslim Terrorists “Just Like US Irish & Jews Who Were All Communists”

By Debbie Schlussel

**** SCROLL DOWN FOR UPDATE ****

The bending over for Islam and the Islamic terrorist Tsarnaev Brothers is getting more ridiculous by the minute, and now absurd,anti-Semitic comparisons of them to the Irish and the Jews have entered the mix. A Pulitzer-Prize winning columnist now says that America’s Irish and Jews were just like Boston Marathon Islamic terrorists Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

WSJ’s Bret Stephens: Who Needs Anti-Semites When We Got Bret Stephens to Compare Jews to the Boston Marathon Islamic Terrorists

On Sunday, Bret Stephens, a Wall Street Journal columnist and former Jerusalem Post Editor-in-Chief, appeared on plagiarist Muslim Fareed Zakaria’s little watched “GPS/The Global Public Square” on CNN, where he is a regular panelist. Stephens, in making a ridiculous attempt to gain admission into the not-so-exclusive “Co-Exist” bumper sticker club, decided to engage in anti-Semitism, by comparing America’s Irish and Jewish populations to Islamic terrorists and the extremist Islam that dominates American Muslims. He said that Jews in America in the 1920s and ’30s were mostly Communist radicals (a damned lie, if there ever was one) and that they all moderated, so, therefore, Muslims will, too. Incredibly, this schmuck was just awarded a Pulitzer Prize. On the other hand, that’s the kinda stuff the Pulitzer Committee loves, so it’s not so incredible after all. And did I mention that this guy, Stephens, makes a huge chunka money on the Jewish lecture circuit?

From the show’s transcript:

The story is what happens particularly to second-generation Muslims who don’t feel an identity quite with the home country or with their adopted land. And that’s where radicalization tends to take place. That’s where we need to devote some real — some real new thinking to this phenomenon. . . . The assimilation model in the United States works marvelously compared to the way it works in say, let’s face it, France or Germany or Great Britain. And if you look back in history, the Irish, the Jews, all kinds of communities who came to this country faced similar kinds of problems. And by the way, each of them had moments of radicalization. I mean, there was a large contingent of Jewish Americans in the 1920s and 30s who became hard- line Communists. And it was a real problem.

The truth is that all that said and done, you find a pattern where Americans are extraordinarily tolerant and very sensitive to the fact that the acts of a handful of people does not suggest something about the entire community. Arab Americans, Muslim Americans are better assimilated in the United States than in nearly any other country in the world. It’s something actually we should take a great deal of pride in — more of it.

HUH? How many Jews in America flew planes into buildings and murdered 3,000 Americans? How many of ’em set off explosions at marathons? How many of em tried to blow up planes with their shoes and underwear? How many Jews tried to blow up Times Square? How many of ’em shot up a US Army base? And don’t bring up the Rosenbergs. Most Jewish-Americans were appalled by them and didn’t support their actions. There is no Jewish equivalent, nor has there ever been, to Hezbollah, an Islamic terrorist group which murders hundreds of Americans and which is supported by the majority of American Muslims, who won’t condemn Hezbollah terrorism. Add to that the fact that the Pew poll of American Muslims shows that younger Muslims in America are far more extreme than even their parents, that they support Islamic terrorism against Americans on U.S. soil in large percentages. They have not assimilated or moderated. They’ve become worse. Nice try, Bret, but no cigar.

My family members who came here in the late 1800s and early 1900s were never Communists. Like most Jews, they were always patriots and they proudly served America in World War II. My great-uncle Gen. Maurice J. Schlussel, MD, a career Army man and the Army’s chief medical officer for the South Pacific after the bombing of Pearl Harbor during World War II, is turning over in his grave at Bret Stephens’ outrageous defamation of his life here in America, after leaving anti-Semitic Poland.

American Muslims Assimilated? Hilarious. This guy, Stephens, is delusional. Obviously, this moron hasn’t been to Dearbornistan, Hamtramckstan, Minnesomalia (er . . . Minnesota), etc., etc., ad nauseam. Nidal Malik Hasan was “assimilated”? The Muslims here are no different, no more assimilated than the Muslims in any other Western country. They are no less extreme, no less likely to engage in Islamic terrorism or support it, and no less likely to blow up marathons, trains, planes, buildings, and Times Square. No less likely to shoot up military bases and recruiting centers. And so on. They are a virus infesting, quickly growing, and metastasizing in a willing host here, just as they are in France, Germany, Great Britain, Scandinavia, and everywhere else.

While it is true that some Irish-Americans were inexcusably helping, supporting, and financing the terrorist Irish Republican Army (which trained with Islamic terrorists, including the P.L.O.), that was a small number, and they didn’t engage in any way in blowing up and/or mass murdering Americans. Neither did the smaller percentage of Jews who were Communists. And the Jews who were Communists were NOT religious Jews. They had left Judaism. You cannot say that about the Muslims, who are usually extremists in their hate no matter what (even, frequently, the marginal percentage that are secular) and who become more extreme the more religious they become. That Bret Stephens doesn’t get this shows his utter ignorance and self-hatred as a Jew.

This same ahole has written not just one–but two–recent columns on Jonathan Pollard spying for Israel and how he should rot in prison. He also repeatedly Islamo-panders in his columns, sucking up to extremist Iranian imams as “democrats” and so on. As I noted on this site, Stephens wrote that Iranian-backed, Shi’ite, Hezbollah-supporting Iraqis “embrace” democracy more than we Westerners do. And when it came to Zakaria’s blatant plagiarism, Stephens spent an entire column excusing that with the justification that, hey, he has me on his show and lets me talk.

In any event if you are an Irish- or Jewish-American, Bret Stephens thinks your people were just like the Muslim Tsarnaev Bros. Will Jewish groups continue to blindly pay this guy the big bucks to speak at their events? Sadly, yes, as predictable as death and taxes.

Now I know why the Jewish Stephens married a non-Jewish chick and had kids with her. He hates the nominal religion of the person he sees in the mirror. And he’ll do whatever he can to defame the people of that religion, even comparing them with Islamic terrorist mass murderers.

Either you are extremely ignorant to refer to jews and communism, or you are not a proud Jew or American.

In either case, to compare the Irish/Jewish immigrant experience to Muslims is to show a lack of understanding of all parties and to the times we live in.

The comparison is an invalid one.

The Jews assimilated and became loyal Americans.

Muslims hate America and they kill Americans every chance they get.

Bret Stephens’ moral equivalence is simply obscene!

Like the rest of our elite, he will never get why Muslims pose a danger to the life and limb of every American. Never mind the multicultural assimilation model failed in Europe – and it doesn’t work here.

But you know no matter how much mayhem and death Muslims inflict upon the good people of this country, we have Islamo-pandering ilk like Stephens come along to lecture us that we haven’t put up with ’em long enough to see that they’ll really change.

Playing Russian Roulette with the lives of innocent Americans by welcoming more Muslims to this country is beyond disgusting. Stephens owes the country an apology but he he has his head too far up his backside to see the terrible damage Islam has wreaked upon this country and will to continue to sow here in the future.

Then again given that the WSJ is part of Saudi Prince al Waleed Bin Talal’s PAWNN Network, Stephen’s Islamic butt kissing comes along as an all too predictable riposte to the Boston Massacre.

Don’t say you weren’t warned!

Bret Stephens could be a contributor to Stormfront. This man libels Jewish and Irish immigrants who for the most part left their homelands for economic and political reasons. Unlike Muslims, these people migrated with a sense of hope and a desire to be a part of the United States. To associate these people in any with most Muslim migrants is defamatory. Neither the Jews or Irish migrants had any desire to impose a theocratic government upon their new homeland. They were not filled with loathing for the people who inhabited the United States, unlike the more recent Muslims hordes who have openly or surreptitiously desired the imposition of Sharia Law. Bret Stephens is a beast, and nothing more.

There are lies about Jews and Communism based on the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, but unfortunately, there are also Jews that reinforced the stereotype such as the Rosenbergs (and Leon Trotsky). Stephens apparently read this document.

However, Stephens, I also thought that the Jews were capitalistic predators feasting on the poor and helpless, and controlling the banks, newspapers and government.

So which is it, Bret Stephens?

DebbieSaidWhat? on April 22, 2013 at 6:21 pm

Deb–

After Walter Duranty (NY times apologist for Stalin) and Janet Cooke (fabricated the tale of an 8-year-old heroin addict for Washington Post) does anyone really even care about this ridiculous prize? (And those are only two of the more notorious examples)

Besides, Pulitzer was far from being a good guy himself.

Or, to get more basic, Stephens and other atheists like him must deny that objective evil exists. Rather, it is a case of bad environment. If only we had done thus and so for those poor Chechen boys…

There are people in the USA whom we, in Israel refer to as: ” the Tzar lackies”,
Their parents never encouraged them to feel as proud Jews should. They grew up in a gentile society, feeling very insecured, detached, unpopular, even mocked at, mainly by girls. In order to overcome & leave a mark, they turn leftsits & go against main stream beliefs & philosophy of the capitalistic society in which they live & make their living off. That Bret wouldn’t in a thousand years mention Henri Ford received a Nazi medal from Herr Adolfo himself. Nor will he write an article about Ofher prominent USA industrialists supporting the Nazi ideology in the open until Pearl Harbour, and secretly there after.
Yes, like all people, Jews come in many colors, if Kissinger could keep working for Nixon, after hearing Nixon say harsh Antisemitic words, indeed they come in many colors.

Train Jihad in Canada – the Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced they arrested suspected Islamic terrorists of trying to bomb a Via Canada Rail train:

http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/news-nouvelles/2013/04-22-ns-sn-eng.htm

Details:

“The two accused, Chiheb ESSEGHAIER and Raed JASER, who live in the Montreal and Toronto area were conspiring to carry out a terrorist attack against a VIA passenger train. Charges include conspiring to carry out an attack against, and conspiring to murder persons unknown for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group.

The RCMP investigation named Project SMOOTH, was coordinated by RCMP-led Integrated National Security Enforcement Teams (INSETs) in Montreal and Toronto with the close collaboration of domestic partners and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). The RCMP would like to thank its INSET partners including the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Canada Border Services Agency, Toronto Police Service, York Regional Police, Peel Regional Police, Ontario Provincial Police, Durham Regional Police, the Sûreté du Québec and the service de police de la Ville de Montréal. The RCMP is also grateful for the valuable assistance of the FBI, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Transport Canada, VIA Rail and CN Police. These exceptional collaborative efforts directly contributed to making the arrests.

“Each and every terrorist arrest the RCMP makes sends a message and illustrates our strong resolve to root out terrorist threats and keep Canadians and our allies safe,” stated Assistant Commissioner James Malizia, responsible for Federal Policing Operations. “A meaningful response to these threats begins on Canadian streets and in Canadians homes and the RCMP works with all their partners, including communities across Canada, in the fight against terrorism.”

Yup – Chiheb ESSEGHAIER and Raed JASER – must sound like your typical Wiccan, Jewish, Christian or Hindu terrorists. The suspected Islamic terrorists resided in the Toronto and Montreal regions. They were stopped in time — Islamic terrorist plots that don’t succeed aren’t the ones you hear about in the mainstream media. The “halal Islam” supporters will inevitably tell us they had nothing to do with the Religion Of Peace.

Uh huh. Thanks Mounties, for a job well done!

From the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2013/04/22/pol-terror-plot-ontario-quebec-arrests.html

Details on breaking the Islamic terrorist train jihad plot in Canada:

“Canadian police say they have arrested two men and thwarted an alleged terrorist plot targeting a passenger train in the Greater Toronto Area.

In a press conference that followed an exclusive report by CBC’s Greg Weston, police named the two accused as Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, and Raed Jaser, 35, from Toronto. They have been charged with conspiracy to carry out a terrorist attack and “conspiring to murder persons unknown for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group.”

Police said the two accused were plotting to derail a passenger train. Jennifer Strachan, chief superintendent of RCMP criminal operations in the province of Ontario, said the two suspects watched trains and railways in the Greater Toronto Area. There was a specific route targeted, not necessarily a specific train, Strachan said, although she declined to reveal the route.

“We are alleging that these two individuals took steps and conducted activities to initiate a terrorist attack,” she told reporters.

The two men arrested are not Canadian citizens but were in the country legally, police said Monday. Investigators would not provide any details about their nationalities.

The RCMP accused the two men of conspiring to commit an “al-Qaeda-supported” attack.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said the two accused were getting “direction and guidance” from al-Qaeda elements in Iran. There was no information to suggest the attacks were state sponsored, he said.

Radio-Canada, CBC’s French service, has learned that Chiheb Esseghaier studied at University of Sherbrooke, before moving to Institute National de la Recherche Scientifique in Varennes, Que., for doctoral research.

The two men are expected to appear at Old City Hall courthouse in Toronto tomorrow.

Alleged attack in planning stage

Had this plot been carried out, it would have resulted in innocent people being killed or seriously injured, Maliza told reporters on Monday.

However, Strachan said the attack was in the planning state but “not imminent.”

In a statement, RCMP said while they believe the individuals accused had the “capacity and intent” to carry out an attack, they believed there was “no imminent threat” to the public, rail employees, train passengers or infrastructure.

In a statement, Via Rail reiterated that “at no time” was there an imminent threat to the safety of the public or Via rail passengers or staff.

“We co-operate with all involved in ensuring the safety and security of our passengers, our employees and the public,” Via said. According to Via, its trains carry nearly four million passengers annually.
Cross-border co-operation

Police said the investigation, called Operation Smooth, was ongoing, but declined to provide details.

Highly placed sources tell CBC News the alleged plotters have been under surveillance for more than a year in Quebec and southern Ontario.

The investigation was part of a cross-border operation involving Canadian law enforcement agencies, the FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The two men arrested are accused of plotting to attack a passenger train in the Toronto area. The two men arrested are accused of plotting to attack a passenger train in the Toronto area. (iStock)

The arrests Monday morning were co-ordinated and executed by a special joint task force of RCMP and CSIS anti-terrorism units, combined with provincial and municipal police forces in Ontario and Quebec.”

The Islamic terrorists were in Canada legally! Let’s hear it again for how Muslims are supposed to be peaceful, law-abiding and loyal in Canada abd the US. We can be thankful a catastrophic loss of life was averted this time through intensive law enforcement work in both Canada and the US.

NormanF on April 22, 2013 at 7:09 pm

Look at that pompous, know-nothing, self-hating Jew git. He fits in nicely with the rest of the dhimmi media. They will get us all killed.

Here is what that untalented fraud and simpleton does not know. And these facts can’t be refuted.

1) The only place where you learn the TRUTH on Islam and who is a fraud and who panders is HERE. Sorry, if you don’t like DS, it has nothing to do with her personally but what she knows and diligently reports, which is the truth. Always.

2) Even if one doesn’t know as much as she does (and that’s just about everyone) if you’re humble and get the basics of what she knows, one can build on that. I have been able to see thru’ frauds with what I have learned here. (I had never heard of Walid Shoebat but a few years ago he was on a talk show…I could tell by what he said that he was a fraud and of course DS’ archives backed it up). It works.

3) The percentages of sorts who are doing terrorist acts are so highly Islamic, they cannot almost be anyone else. Even left wing nutter groups like ALF and ELF are not bombing and haven’t bombed in a long time. The only other types of (failed) bombings that have been sparsely reported on (lately) have been failed OWS bombings or plans of bombings. It’s all Moooooooslim, all the time!

4) DS has done a great job in proving that there is no distinction of “moderate” and “radicalized/fundamentalist” Mooooooslims. It’s just Moooooslims. As one canny Bostonian described it, the “moderates” are the grass and the “radicalized” are the snakes. If you read story after story on this topic and you MUST tell the truth, it’s how it comes out. Unfortunately, she is the only one I hear speaking of it so frankly. She’s proved it to me. Again and again.

5) Since 9/11 there have been almost 20, 000 incidents of Mooooooslim terror. Who even comes in a close second? Do they even get to 200? I bet NOT.

6) The *ONE* story Libtards like to pimp is the Tim McVeigh one. As I recently said, those who have *really* looked into it know about the Iranian influence and how the FBI willingly let an Iranian who could be “John Doe #2” get away. They also killed McVeigh lickety split. Iranian influence? FBI not bothered by an Islamic influence? Killing the bomber within 5 years when the Death Penalty now takes 25 years PLUS in USA? C’mon. Wake up.

7) The downing of Flight 587 out of East Rockaway. Most should not believe this was a airplane malfunction. I didn’t and when it went down I knew NOTHING about Islamic Jihad. I just recently learned that was the last MAJOR airline tragedy due to mechanics. 12 years ago. Nope. That was taken down by Jihad. Good news, it’s REALLY safe to fly the major airlines (all for Jihad, that is) and the last incident actaully predates that.

8) All the other countries and provinces fighting Islamic Jihad the world over. C’mon! It’s everywhere. Wake the hell up!!!

Put alllll those things together and you have Islamic Jihad. People need to wake up. Those who don’t see it (12 years after 9/11) don’t WANT to see it. It’s all there. The percentages are in the favour of that educated conclusion.

After all, those who trust this site KNEW the bombers could not be anything but Moooooslim. And we were right. And now, it looks like that Saudi student is not so innocent as the dopes thought. All one had to do was just wait. In the end, it always comes out ISLAM.

I am praying for this country to wake the eff up!!!!!

Skunky on April 22, 2013 at 7:35 pm

There weren’t any communists in my Jewish family, just lots of FDR/JFK Democrats. They weren’t interested in slaughtering fellow Americans or having the Star of David or the Hammer and Sickle fly over the White House. They merely wanted to live peaceful and prosperous lives. Some served in the military, some built successful businesses. No one in my family has ever been arrested or harmed a fellow American. Quite the contrary. We have generally been courteous and respectful.

I have no idea why Bret Stephens would disparage my ancestors, other than to make himself welcome on left-wing TV shows. He could merely have said, “I think Muslim immigrants will eventually assimilate.” Instead, he has to trash everyone else.

adam on April 22, 2013 at 7:41 pm

    Adam,

People who plot mass murder are not truly “assimilated.”

Neither the Jews nor the Irish sought to murder fellow Americans. On the other hand, Muslims do!

Stephens can’t to appreciate the critical difference between the two group of immigrants. The former saw America as their home. Muslims see it as an enemy to be destroyed.

Political correctness though keeps us from acknowledging what they’re doing here. Its not to make a positive contribution to this country.

NormanF on April 22, 2013 at 7:46 pm

Skunky,

I share your prayers – and when we need to conduct extensive surveillance of them to prevent jihad, we’re already losing the war.

When the enemy is inside one’s gates, whether in Boston or in Canada as Italkit and I have already posted, its hard to feel secure.

Bret Stephens is quite simply an idiot.

So much so that so many vermin will trade their very souls and the truth for it.

I didn’t like high school. I didn’t care two sh**s about the popular bores. I am an individual and I also like the truth and will not sell my soul for a truth so obvious and vile as Moooooslims.

I think at this point (way too far in the game but let that go…) it’s time for those of us who see the truth to point out and NOT equivocate to shameless panderers like BS. We will call him out on it. It’s getting too hot in the kitchen not to do this.

I say this because so many peeps on our side do not see Islam as they should, They still believe it extreme to call out the whole religion…the grasses and the snakes. “Ain’t nobody got time for that” in 2013!!!

Skunky on April 22, 2013 at 8:12 pm

When an indulged would be prognosticator and augur like Bret Stephens says that “Jews in America in the 1920s and ’30s” were communists he’s referring only to Jews that he believes would suffer comparison favorably with himself – that is to say intellectuals.

You almost have to feel sorry for the left rummaging through the historical examples of discontent in order to reassure themselves that what’s happening is in some way vaguely familiar or progressive.

If the Boston IED party will not convince them otherwise then nothing that can be said or that they will allow to be said will shake them from their reverie.

They are transfixed by their power to shape words and in that sense they really do exist in a kind of parallel universe of their own making.

If America cannot break free from this reverie it is doomed along with them to a fate that will reflect only the flip side of the American dream because that is all that is real to them after lip service has been paid.

I didn’t vote for Obama. I feel compelled however to correct you here: American Jews may be blind to the danger in front of them but here’s a tip – unlike Muslims, they’re not disloyal to America.

Something to keep in mind before you ape Stephens’ demagogic comparison between the two communities.

NormanF on April 22, 2013 at 8:00 pm

    @NF,

I didn’t say “all” of them. And wow – hope springs eternal with you. When I hear you say that American Jews (the ultra-left ones, anyway) are just “confused,” I have to laugh. A lot of people apply this “hopeful denial” method to Obama. Basically, they are so consumed with white guilt and the desire to worship black booty that they sell THEMSELVES the bill of goods – i.e., “Obama is actually a secret moderate, he really wants to move to the center, his party just won’t let him. Poor Obama!”

Jews aren’t by any means the only ones; they have plenty of company in America. But if you vote for Obama, you are a communist.

Please tell me you don’t also think that dingleberry in Boston was an unwilling victim of his older brother?

I regret to inform you that Bret Stephens is 100% correct about the Irish and the Jews, although for some strange reason he forgot to include the Italians among the immigrants who were all communists and budding terrorists.

It is documented fact, for example, that such Irish Presidents as Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt were each dedicated card-carrying communists who sought to overthrow the US Government, and were involved in many terrorist activities in their early days, before they went into politics. The only reason that most people are unaware of these facts are that they hired clever Jewish PR agents, who successfully repositioned them as patriots.

It is also documented fact that US Navy Admiral Hyman Rickover and Joshua L. Goldberg, the first rabbi to serve as Navy Chaplain in WWII were Marxists their entire lives. Both Rickover and Goldberg conspired with Executive Secretary of the Communist Labor Party Alfred Wagenknecht to blow up the Statue of Liberty. Fortunately, they were not successful. This too has been kept secret by the Media, which was, at the time, controlled by Jews.

Finally, it is also documented fact that Sgt. John Basilone, USMC, and Medal of Honor Recipient, and Peter Pace, USMC and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs were Stalinist sympathizers. They recruited and appointed many other fellow travelers into the highest levels in the military.

Thus, the evidence overwhelmingly supports Bret Stephens’ well reasoned and supported analysis. This is all the more reason that we should overlook the unfortunate workplace mishap at Fort Hood involving the great Muslim-American Col. Nidal Malik Hasan. We should not let one incident mar the military career of an otherwise extraordinary patriot.

(See, I can write mindless crap as well as the next person. Maybe I can get my views published and win a Pulitzer prize too.)

Mr. Stephens was likely attempting to become an accepted member of the “beautiful people” crowd, a.k.a. “the moonbats.” With his current article, he’s probably achieved his goal.

Neils60 on April 22, 2013 at 11:09 pm

Liberals have always come up with snarky stories such as this, but the tendency was accelerated and refined under Bill Clinton — weave a story tailored to the situation at hand. Never mind whether the story is correct or not, as long as it can ‘plausibly’ fit the situation. Stephens is following in this tradition, as are most liberal and conservative commentators in recent days.

If they used one-tenth of this inventiveness figuring out how to make America more secure, and more effective in fighting our enemies, we would be much more safe than we are now.

The opportunism involved is galling, and was commented on by Debbie. Stephens follows a long list of ‘conservatives’ who have decided, to varying degrees, to join up with the Obama cult.

Following in David Brock’s footsteps, Kathleen Parker paved the way for the rest of them, and we see Hannity, Ann Coulter, and the rest of them following.

As Norman F suggested, Stephens’ overall analogy is flawed logically. Even leaving aside the false premise of large numbers of Jewish Communists, the fact that this large number of Jewish (assuming arguendo) Communists became loyal Americans does not mean that this will hold true for other subversive or terrorists groups. Historical circumstances and heritages are not the same, but with the dumbing down of America, Stephens probably figured he could get away with it.

As it turns out, most of the Communists, Jewish and non-Jewish from the 30s were not repentant, even though their radicalization did fade with time, at least for the most part. These people jumped with glee when the protests of the 60s emerged, and if they were too old and infirm to join in, their children, in many, many cases, were their surrogates. And surprisingly few of the 60s radicals are repentant today. Most look back on the 60s as the best period of their lives. Bill Ayers is a prominent, but, by no means, the only example. The list is nauseating; Jane Fonda comes to mind as well. Mike Klonsky, Tom Hayden, the list is endless.

But again, after World War II, most Jews were interested in improving their situation, going to school under the GI Bill, or getting into colleges that had discriminated against them for decades (as compared to the affirmative action that Muslims now enjoy), and building decent lives for themselves.

Large numbers of Jewish Communists in the 20s? As it happens, there were very few Communists in the 20s, Jewish or otherwise. The Communist Party was tiny until the mid-30s. And from the 30s on, it is worth noting that no central leader of the Communist Party was Jewish. The Communists tried to project a “wholesome American image” with such people as William Z. Foster, Earl Browder, the Kansas farmboy, and Gus Hall. Similarly, none of the major Communist electoral candidates was Jewish, and the successful NYC Congressmen in the 40s, Ben Davis and Peter Cacchione, similarly, were not Jewish. Just as in the Soviet Union (sic) and Eastern Europe, the Communists believed that projecting a ‘Jewish’ image would antagonize the ‘masses’.

Consistent with this, the Communist movement has always been anti-semitic in the extreme, and because of that, in part, even those Jews who were members, generally stayed in only a very short time. There was a massive in-and-out movement during the Communist Party’s heyday in the 30s and 40s, so the overwhelming majority of Jews who joined (abd as Debbie points out, this was a very small minority of Jews to begin with) left after a short time. This was especially true in 1939. The signing of the Hitler-Stalin pact effectively reduced the Jewish membership to a tiny percentage of what it had been earlier in the mid-and-late 30s.

Muslims, on the other hand, have a permanent hatred of Western civilization. It is not at all a ‘moment of radicalization’.

And all of Debbie’s points are correct, that the actions of the Jewish Communists cannot be compared with the Muslims today, either in destructiveness or in acceptance by the larger group of co-religionists. And Muslims have not had a ‘moment of radicalization’; they have had more than a millennium of radicalization.

But one similarity that Stephens does not mention is the softness of the liberals towards both Communism and Muslim terrorism. It is well known that FDR’s administration was riddled with Communists, and although Truman tried to remedy the situation, his efforts were too little and too late. Similarly, from the early 70s on, and in some instances from the mid-60s on, the Democratic Party has been soft on Communism here and abroad. And even in the mid and late 50s, they applauded the Supreme Court decisions that undid the constructive work of containing Communism that was done, at least to some extent in the late 40s and early 50s. And the softness towards Muslims on the part of both parties today needs no mention (except by Stephens, who omits the subject entirely).

Little Al on April 22, 2013 at 11:11 pm

That was a very well thought out and thorough response, A1. The only thing I have to add to it is a somewhat more obvious point. Jews have always done better in every way under capitalism and have suffered horribly under communist regimes. The same could be said of any other minority group.

Ralph Adamo on April 23, 2013 at 1:30 am

Dear Bret Stephens,

Your analogy between “Communists Jews” in the 20’s and 30’s to current Islamic terrorism in the U.S.A. is fallacious, offensive, and gratuitously harmful to the Jewish community.

The vast majority of “Jewish Communists” of the 20’s and 30’s would not identify themselves as Stalinists, but more as socialists. Albert Einstein who espoused socialism is a prime example. The case of Robert Oppenheimer is another. Although he flirted with Communism in his earlier years, he gave the best years of his life to leading the Manhattan project. I am unaware of any series of terrorist acts committed by “Jewish Communists” during the 20’s and 30’s. And even if you can point to one example, it would not prove the analogy.

In general the Jewish people who were hardened Communists (not the socialist variety mentioned above) certainly did not identify their Communism with their Judaism. I am not aware of any denomination of Synagogue where the rabbis preached terrorism for the sake of heaven as the Islamists do. And if you can find a single example, it still would not prove your case. In general the Communists espoused atheist, and not only did not identify with their Jewish faith, but more times than not they were hostile to it. Karl Marx himself was a vicious antisemite, both in his person interactions and in his writings. So if anything these “Jewish Communists” were enemies of the Jewish People.

In contrast, the Islamic terrorists not only identify strongly as Muslims, but they see themselves as pious Muslims acting in the best way possible as Muslims. They are glorified in their Mosques; they are not considered enemies of their communities. On the contrary they are pointed to as role models.

Jewish people both as individuals and as a community have given immeasurably to this country. And although Jews have no doubt suffered a lot of discrimination in the U.S. (a great deal more than has the Muslim community), Jews have been eternally grateful for the opportunity to practice or not practice their religion in peace, for the most part, without harassment.

Finally, I have to ask what has happened to the Bret Stephens who used to write sensible and intelligent editorials that usually defended Israel and Jews and had a clear sense of moral clarity. Why are you making this senseless, gratuitous attack on the Jewish community? Why are you engaging in history revisionism in order to prove a fallacious point? And why are you knowingly giving ammunition to the antisemites who will grasp every snowflake that you give them. You know very well that the snowflakes will grow into snowballs.

Samuel Dinkels on April 22, 2013 at 11:17 pm

Mr. Dinkels, that was an excellent essay.

What has happened to Stephens? Before he left the Jerusalem Post for greener pastures, he ultimately supported the “Disengagement,” a.k.a., evicting Jews from their land in order to give the land (Gaza) to Muslims. He had deliberated long on this matter–so he said–but finally, provisionally, decided to support it. He wrote in the paper that he never felt fully comfortable either in Israel or in the US. He is a “citizen of the world,” it seems.

I think it’s very likely that Stephens, who never had firm moorings, is now adrift in a sea of self-interested corruption. Like countries, he has no permanent friends, just permanent interests. It’s too bad because I agree with you that at one time his writing had merit.

skzion on April 25, 2013 at 7:36 pm

Bret Stephens is the reason why we have a terrorist problem. If we ALL could just face the facts and TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY it could have been over and done a loooooooooong time ago.

“6) The *ONE* story Libtards like to pimp is the Tim McVeigh one”…………Skunky on April 22, 2013 at 7:35 pm
Even the ‘conservatives’ have it wrong. Just last week I heard Rush Limbaugh call McVeigh a right winger, without even a mention of his ties to muslim terrorists.

BTW, if Stephens really thinks that “Arab Americans, Muslim Americans (like the ones that dance in the streets and give out candy whenever one of theirs blows up skyscrapers or kills 8 yr. old’s?) are better assimilated in the United States than in nearly any other country in the world” than Europe is REALLY Screwed.

theShadow on April 22, 2013 at 11:47 pm

Sorry, I meant NYC City Councilmen when referring to Davis and Cacchione.

Little Al on April 23, 2013 at 3:57 am

Why is it that so many diaspora Jews have this guilt affliction which causes this sick reaction, fawning over these monsters, so ready to forgive and rationalize their actions? I can understand a Geraldo, or maybe a Judith Miller, but Bret Stephens I thought was a little more together, having been affiliated with the Jerusalem Post and the WSJ.

BethesdaDog on April 23, 2013 at 7:01 am

Does everyone here notice, like I heard last week on talk radio, that soon after the Marathon attack, libs would start their usual spin on the “Muslim” brothers, the ass-kissing of Islam like they do. Every day Debbie has a new post on this fact it seems..thank you Debbie! You keep us informed!

Jesse on April 23, 2013 at 8:19 am

There are other aspects of the Communist Party’s relative popularity between 1935 and 1948 that are worth mentioning.

During most of this time, the Communist Party (CP) presented itself to the American public as the ‘best supporter’ of liberal causes. The 1935-1939 era, generally called the Popular Front era, was the epitome of this approach. The CP supported FDR, vocally endorsed and built trade unions, and loudly campaigned for civil rights. Although their support was opportunistic, inconsistent and self-serving, this was not immediately obvious to many supporters who let their emotions overcome their intellects. (Communism versus the Negro, by William A. Nolan, long out of print and available generally only on Amazon and in good college and university libraries is one of several books that discusses the fradulent aspects of the CP’s campaign.)

Also, and very important, during this time, the CP presented itself as the only consistent fighter against European fascism, i.e. Germany and Italy. This approach seemed credible to many, because of the anti-communism of Hitler and Mussolini, and the lack real hostility to Hitler and Mussolini manifested by FDR and many in American society. The ‘fight against fascism’ was responsible for much of the CP’s growth during this period. The disproportionate appeal of this campaign to Jews is obvious.

Of course in 1939, the Stalin-Hitler pact obliterated these arguments, and the CP’s membership dropped dramatically, especially, as I said above, among Jews. But in 1941, Hitler attacked Russia, and the CP was again able to present itself as the main fighter against fascism. This was especially true after Pearl Harbor, when the U.S. and Russia were allies. (and again, only a very small percentage of Jews ever belonged to, or supported the CP.)

Then, after 1945, during the embryonic stages of the Cold War, the CP’s appeal for ‘peace’ struck a chord in many who were exhausted by World War II. It is worth noting that during this time, the CP was one of the very few groups calling for Black equality, e.g. integration of baseball, and loudly took credit for facilitating Jackie Robinson’s entry into major league baseball. eople had short memories and forgot that the CP had opposed the NAACP’s campaign for equal rights during World War II (on the grounds that such a struggle would divert support away from the war effort to sustain Mother Russia).

This is not to excuse those who joined or supported the CP. The facts about what was going on in Russia and Eastern Europe were available to anyone who cared to look, but it was noteworthy that one of the main victims of the Eastern European takeover (other than Jews) was the Catholic Church which had been hostile, to say the least, to Jews for two thousand years. This blunted the perception of some Jews, and clarity was not aided by an anti-Catholic campaign in the late 40s in this country, aided and abetted by the CP (witness Paul Blanchard’s screed ‘American Freedom and Catholic Power’.)

Information about the murder of Jewish and Yiddish writers in Soviet-controlled territories during the postwar period was not publicized until the Cold War was in full force, and by the time such information along with follow-up purges had become known, the Cold War had eliminated virtually all Jewish support of the Communist Party.

Broad-brush analogies such as Stephens’ are invariably inaccurate, because they ignore the details that will invalidate such comparisons. But the intellectual laziness of most people make them appealing, which is why politicians use them so much. But the allure of Communism to those Jews won over by it, occurred primarily because of the factors listed above, and its supporters ignored, or were unaware of the deeper motives of the Communists, or their espionage.

But these motivations were clearly different from the jihad of the terrorist Muslims, and the idea that new populations in the US just go through similar radical phases is simplistic and ignores the specifics.

Little Al on April 23, 2013 at 8:20 am

I didn’t watch the episode. But, in reading the transcript and comparing it to your conclusions I shouldn’t be surprised that there’s a twisting of the attempted conclusions.
He didn’t for even a second conclude that ALL Jews were communists…so this BS rhetoric you people pull in that “my ancestors fought in such and such war” are irrelevant and should only be used to educate the most uneducated among us.
Would he be ignorant if he claimed there was extreme anti-semitism in 1930s Germany? But, I’m of German descent and can tell you there was no anti-semitism in the ancestors I’m aware of. Using the logic of most of the readers……extremists in their own holier than thou way……Germany never had a problem with anti-semitism.
Grow up. Is radical Islam a problem? Duh. Should we take Bret Stephens’s words as gospel….no (again, duh). But is there an interesting, well-researched point about assimilation? Absolutely. Is it an apples to apples comparison? No. And, I didn t read anything to suggest it was.
He used the phrase “by the way”…..indications it was only part of his point…..and, “a large contingent”. Eg. Not everyone.

Closed minded citizens like the ones represented here do more harm than good in fixing issues. Enjoy your hatred

Almost everything I’m seeing in the MSM regarding Islam, the Boston terror attack, etc., is utterly outrageous and not just incorrect but blatantly incorrect, offensively incorrect, shamelessly incorrect, flagrantly incorrect, garishly incorrect. Simply unbelievable. It has become obvious that political correctness and multiculturalism are cancerous memes that are as dangerous as Islam. They are like open sores in a tropical area rife with infectious diseases.

Pray Hard on April 23, 2013 at 12:05 pm

From thereligionofpeace.com:

Muslims killed more civilians on 9/11 than were killed in 36 years of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland.

And, basically, Muslims kill more people EVERY week or two than have been killed by all white Christian terrorists, including the two typical whipping boys, McVeigh and Brevick, in the past three decades, at least.

Pray Hard on April 23, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Of course radical Islam is a problem. How is it wrong for me to say that?

Lou on April 23, 2013 at 2:08 pm

Ok. I’m new to the site. Is the point here to suggest that muslim’s have committed atrocities….and radical Islam needs to be dealt with? Or, are we suggesting (and, this is what I feel like I’m seeing) that things like the Boston bombings (mere minutes from where I live) are a reflection of Islam in general? Or, further yet, that these acts are reflective of the catch-all term immigrant……whether he be from India, UAE or sweden

Lou on April 23, 2013 at 2:12 pm

Have to leave work to go home for the day so I’ll post in full on this topic later. I do have a quick question? Who owns the Wall Street Urinal?

Ken b on April 23, 2013 at 3:14 pm

My sister lost 3 toes in Boston and all I want to say is the people on this website (including Stan) are partially responsible. The bombers are ultimately responsible. But, ignorance is ignorance and this site is dripping of it. Please….to do something with your lives. The hatred emanating from this site makes me ill. I’m a junior at Boston College and my roommate is a Muslim from Algeria. She is not responsible for this. She would hurt a fly. You are all going to hell.

I hate you all

Rebecca on April 23, 2013 at 5:42 pm

Rebecca is a prime reason while pathetic Boston will NEVER be “Boston Strong”.

Example # 587,225,496 of ignorant Libtards NOT knowing a thing about Islam and yet coming here OUTRAGED because we do and don’t pull our punches.

Miss Rebecca better get to understanding Islam. The real place her ignorant anger should be placed, not us. Islam and dhimmitude and willful blindness made her sister a target. Not us. We here are trying to stop those who maimed her poor sister.

And as I finish this post, let’s all marvel at the perpetual hypocrisy of Libtards in action….

Boy, Rebecca really is a moron. I just read about her sister losing toes, and whom does she haaaate? Why, those on this site who oppose the ideology that his maimed her sister.

Too bad Rebecca and her sis couldn’t swap places. Her sister may be a moron, but Rebecca has removed all doubt.

Big deal you’re from Alabamie. That means an Alabama Zombie (or “Old Suzannah”) ate your brain a long time ago. That’s nice but I wouldn’t brag about it.

Boston is not coming clean about that Saudi student every dope at first thought was innocent once he was cleared (riiiiiight) so no, they are NOT “Boston Strong”.

We’re actually reviewing this blog in a sociology course. I pointed out to my professor how bars hit crazy and stubborn the people here are.

It’s actually an endeavor we started after the bombings and we’re basically isolating all you folks as dangerous psychopaths. Look at your language…..you all agree on everything…..cult, anyone? You have a mob mentality. And, not one person takes in what is said. Just attach those that disagree.

So, Skunky, you should be proud to know that you’re being profiled at one if the 25 best universities in the country. Big day for uou

Skunky on April 24, 2013 at 12:13 pm

Rebecca, cupcake, given your filthy language here, you must be very popular with your undergraduate sociology class in a not so impressive university. I guess you have some mediocre graduate student leading a discussion section who has signed off on your project.

Your problem is that you have so many dumb prejudices and are so ignorant that you do not realize how much you have humiliated yourself. Let’s call it “objective humiliation” (as opposed to “subjective humiliation”).

BTW, I realize that you have left the hickville for which you have such scorn for Boston and now want to pose as a sophisticate, but you should know that many regulars here not only have undergraduate degrees from universities that would never admit you, but have graduate degrees as well. It’s just that we get so many of your type–each thinking that she is so smart and knowledgeable–that we get tired saying the same old things repeatedly.
