“Accidental Racist”: Brad Paisley’s White Guy Apologism Song Says Cowboy Hats Racist, Blacks Still Slaves

By Debbie Schlussel

Shame on Brad Paisley. The country singer’s flagging career was in need of a blood transfusion, and he got it–and a whole lotta publicity–by teaming with LL Cool J in a White Guilt/Blacks Are Still Slaves song. Oh, and cowboy hats are like Klan hoods, according to them. Really? Brad Paisley, you’re a not so accidental idiot. And the song is bleeping boring.

llcooljbradpaisley

Since yesterday, I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about the new Paisley song, “Accidental Racist,” which also features has-been rapper LL Cool J. It’s controversial because the politically correct crowd doesn’t like its defense of wearing Confederate Flag T-Shirts or the lyrics that talk about how Paisley (and the rest of us) were not around for slavery and yet we are still paying for it. But if you read the lyrics the White guy, Paisley, is very apologetic (which makes it especially absurd for people to be up in arms about it), and the Black guy, LL Cool J, is likening cowboy hats (which many Black people wear–and there were plenty of Black cowboys) to Klan hoods. Huh? LL Cool J also claims that he’s running around like a modern day “Django,” as if slavery–and not affirmative action and government minority set-asides galore–is still in place. And yet, despite this, liberals are claiming that “Accidental Racist” is “accidentally racist.” Which it isn’t. Again, some parts of the song are ridiculous, such as when LL Cool J says that guys in white cowboy hats are “not all good.”

obamacowboyhat

Uh-Oh! A Guy in a White Cowboy Hat! LL Cool J Says He’s a “Raaaaacist!”

Check out the lyrics, below and you can figure out which are sung by the White country dude and which are rapped by the Black LL Cool J, including the parts in the parentheses. What do you think? My take: Do we really need another anthem to White guilt just so Brad Paisley can get his singing career back on track?

Accidental Racist
By Brad Paisley, James Todd Smith (“LL Cool J”), and Lee Thomas Miller

To the man that waited on me at the Starbucks down on Main, I hope you understand
When I put on that t-shirt, the only thing I meant to say is I’m a Skynyrd fan
The red flag on my chest somehow is like the elephant in the corner of the south
And I just walked him right in the room
Just a proud rebel son with an ‘ol can of worms
Lookin’ like I got a lot to learn but from my point of view

I’m just a white man comin’ to you from the southland
Tryin’ to understand what it’s like not to be
I’m proud of where I’m from but not everything we’ve done
And it ain’t like you and me can re-write history
Our generation didn’t start this nation
We’re still pickin’ up the pieces, walkin’ on eggshells, fightin’ over yesterday
And caught between southern pride and southern blame

They called it Reconstruction, fixed the buildings, dried some tears
We’re still siftin’ through the rubble after a hundred-fifty years
I try to put myself in your shoes and that’s a good place to begin
But it ain’t like I can walk a mile in someone else’s skin

‘Cause I’m a white man livin’ in the southland
Just like you I’m more than what you see
I’m proud of where I’m from but not everything we’ve done
And it ain’t like you and me can re-write history
Our generation didn’t start this nation
And we’re still paying for the mistakes
That a bunch of folks made long before we came
And caught between southern pride and southern blame

Dear Mr. White Man, I wish you understood
What the world is really like when you’re livin’ in the hood
Just because my pants are saggin’ doesn’t mean I’m up to no good
You should try to get to know me, I really wish you would
Now my chains are gold but I’m still misunderstood
I wasn’t there when Sherman’s March turned the south into firewood
I want you to get paid but be a slave I never could
Feel like a new fangled Django, dodgin’ invisible white hoods
So when I see that white cowboy hat, I’m thinkin’ it’s not all good
I guess we’re both guilty of judgin’ the cover not the book
I’d love to buy you a beer, conversate and clear the air
But I see that red flag and I think you wish I wasn’t here

I’m just a white man
(If you don’t judge my do-rag)
Comin’ to you from the southland
(I won’t judge your red flag)
Tryin’ to understand what it’s like not to be
I’m proud of where I’m from
(If you don’t judge my gold chains)
But not everything we’ve done
(I’ll forget the iron chains)
It ain’t like you and me can re-write history
(Can’t re-write history baby)

Oh, Dixieland
(The relationship between the Mason-Dixon needs some fixin’)
I hope you understand what this is all about
(Quite frankly I’m a black Yankee but I’ve been thinkin’ about this lately)
I’m a son of the new south
(The past is the past, you feel me)
And I just want to make things right
(Let bygones be bygones)
Where all that’s left is southern pride
(RIP Robert E. Lee but I’ve gotta thank Abraham Lincoln for freeing me, know what I mean)
It’s real, it’s real
It’s truth

For the record, it’s been years since LL Cool J a/k/a James Todd Smith has had a hit song, and back in the day, when he did, he was a “pop” star more than a rapper. He’s not from the hard core rap genre, never really was. And, today, most people know him as a star of one of CBS’ CSI spin-offs. Paisley could never get one the “gangsta” rappers to appear on this song. Not a chance, even though the song is basically a White Guilt Guy Pandering to Black Militant song.

You know what’s gonna happen though, right? It’s all too predictable: LL Cool J will probably have his Black Card revoked for saying “RIP Robert E. Lee,” even though there were Black Confederate soldiers who served under Lee. But Brad Paisley definitely deserves to lose his Country Music card.

One last thing: every single time I see a dumbass with his pants sagging under his butt, I judge him. And I’ll continue to judge him. Only a moron dresses like this. Only a moron adopts prison culture and fashion as his own. If you want to adopt stupidity and dumb “couture” as part of your culture, you shall be judged by it.

And buy yourself a damn belt!

Right on DS!!! I’m getting very tired of this guilt trip some people are on.

This should boost sales of cowboy hats and other western gear.
Kind of like what Obama/Biden did for gun sales.

I refuse to apologize, and in fact, am quite proud of:

Being An American;
Being White;
Being Jewish
Being pro-Israel;
Being conservative;
Being a third generation member of the NRA;
Being opposed to big government;
Believing in capitalism and the “Protestant work ethic”;
Getting an education, instead of hanging out in the ghetto; and
working my butt off.

If Brad Paisley has white guilt, he should give away all his millions, every last cent, to the crooks and millionaires who run the NAACP, the United Negro College Fun, etc.

Jonathan E. Grant on April 9, 2013 at 4:22 pm

I’m sooooo tired of the butt kissing guilt trip that doesn’t apply to us. I don’t care for country music but this trash is poison…

Right On on April 9, 2013 at 4:24 pm

Its funny we have white guilt.

We have a black President and we’re supposed to feel guilty over things most people alive today have nothing to do with.

I don’t feel like apologizing! If Brad Paisley wants to, that’s his affair but he doesn’t speak for me.

NormanF on April 9, 2013 at 4:28 pm

The songs OK.
I’m a bigger Skynyrd fan than a country fan though.
Sure LL Cool J isn’t saying RIP Robert E. Lee in a good way but that’s understandable.

Lee did say about slavery, “I think it however a greater evil to the white man than to the black race”. He might turn out to be right.

Although Lee’s view was based in an inherently patronizing view of African Americans that would have made him quite at home in the Democratic party – he was hardly a strong proponent of slavery at the time.
He fought for the South mainly out of loyalty and a sense of independence.

In other words he’s hardly the stereotypical white you’d see Django unless that’s where you get your sense of history from.

The songs a better shot a redemption than anything coming out of the White House but that’s not saying much.

Frankz on April 9, 2013 at 4:30 pm

*at redemption*

Frankz on April 9, 2013 at 4:31 pm

Brad Paisley. I think of him as the crappy country artist that married the gal Pete Sampras didn’t.

I’m a big country music fan…BUT a GOOD country music fan. That means Brad Paisley (and his boring ilk) do NOT cut it for me. There is NOTHING worse than BAD country music. And like “pop” music, conventional “country” is crappy, crappy pap. It’s just wicked bad and torture for me.

I like Buddy & Julie Miller, Dick Curless, Ralph Stanley, The Louvin Bros., Junior Brown, Patty Loveless, Flatt & Scruggs, Randy Skaggs, Jim Lauderdale, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Wanda Jackson etc…

I’d rather listen to fake punk rocker Viley Virus than crap country like Brad Paisley. That’s why country music radio sucks because only the GOOD country music can be found on the left of the dial (on college stations, believe it or not (@ least here in Boston!) or on satellite Americana stations.

Skunky on April 9, 2013 at 4:37 pm

    Whoopsie…I meant *RICKY* Skaggs. Oops!

Skunky, I didn’t think I liked any country music until I visited the honkey tonks (sp) of Nashville.

Thanks for the names of worthwhile performers.

skzion on April 10, 2013 at 7:49 am

That’s right, Skzion. If one is not embracing of country music (and I mean the good stuff, not the pap…) the best way to see how great it is by happenstance. I’m from the North East so that is how I discovered how awesome it is.

Here’s a fav I forgot to mention (there are so many it’s hard to remember ’em all). The Richard Thompson version is great too (what a voice he has…and the lyrics are different because RT is from Ireland/UK and Del McCoury is a USA country boy…).

Slavery ended well over two centuries ago and over half a century ago the ugly edifice of Jim Crow and legalized racism was dismantled in this country.

History moves forward. People who live in the past can’t see the road in front of them.

NormanF on April 9, 2013 at 4:38 pm

I guess Math isn’t your strong suit Norman. The Emancipation Proclamation was 1863 which makes it 150 years, not “well over two centuries” ago.

Brad Paisley, you can not make amends neither can any white person. Ever. You all have something you never earned. White privilege. You were born racist and you will die racist.

I suggest all you Islamaphobic racists attend a White Privilege/Interfaith Workshop.

Jerry S on April 9, 2013 at 5:06 pm

    Jerry,

“I suggest all you Islamaphobic racists attend a White Privilege/Interfaith Workshop.”

Um Jerry, are you being serious or pulling our leg? First off, what the hell is a “Islamaphobic”? Second, the term islamophobe is a made up propaganda term invented by the arabs and iranians in the middle east in order to crack down on scrutinity againsts islam, in other words Jerry, it’s “censorhip/fascsim”!

Third, what race and ethnicity is islam? What race are muslims suppose to be idiot? Muslims come in ALL colors and races.

Fourth, I assume you support and condone so-called “Diversity Training” in order to propagandize people into dumbass PC thinking, etc. So that’s why you bought up that BS “Interfaith Workshop”. And finally, NOT everybody on this blog is white and of european lineage, FYI Jerry, I happen to be a black person, a man of color who’s pretty conservative (center-right wing) and agrees with many things Ms. Schlussel says here on her blog, so I think you’re the one’s who’s being a racists here Jerry, by assuming every poster here is white!

“A nation is defined by its borders, language & culture!”

    Sean R. on April 9, 2013 at 5:47 pm

And Jerry S, I suggest you go f-ck yourself.

Most white people I know were not born with a silver spoon in their mouths. They worked for everything they got. Unlike blacks, they did not and could not rely on have affirmative action, food stamps, racial quotas, welfare, etc.

A majority of the country immigrated, or are descendants of those who immigrated to this once great land after slavery ended.

Further, if you have a problem with slavery, take it up with the black tribes that captured their rival tribe’s people, sold or gave them to the Muslims, who sold them at marked up prices to the Spanish, and later English, slave traders.

Slavery only existed in the United States from 1776 to 1865. Just about every black person here has it better than if they had stayed in Africa. The blacks have more freedom, more wealth, etc than in Africa. Even so-called inner city blacks have big screen televisions, 200 dollar sneakers, automobiles, etc. Our poor live better than most middle class people in Africa, India, etc.

Finally, while the ancestors of some, not all, of the blacks came here in chains, no one is keeping their descendants here. They are free to return to the motherland, as are people like you. Funny thing is, more blacks are emigrating to America out of choice.

Jonathan E. Grant on April 9, 2013 at 5:57 pm

Wow, I am astounded at some of the posts on this blog.. First off I am a white man of the south, born and raised, and I can tell you that there is a LOT of racism that I saw happening on a daily basis where I’m from. So a couple things I’d like to point out:

Right off the bat, to those of you who say “forget slavery, racism is dead and no longer relevant” I ask you, where is your evidence? Have you spent much time in the deep south? Don’t get me wrong, I love my hometown in Texas, but I have seen more racism than the lot of you could imagine. The first word my next door neighbor taught his son to say was “nigger” for Christ Sake. His wife thought it was cute. 15 years later, what do you know, the kids going to the town clan meetings once a week. And YES the clan is very active in the south. I’ve seen nooses YES, NOOSES, strewn out on the lawn of black residents in my neighborhood as a message of intimidation from the active clan. To be right and honest, I grew up in a racist household myself, and the funny thing is I had barely even seen a black person much less talked to one for most of my childhood, and yet I still held many strong prejudices. Racism is alive and well in the south, there is no questioning that.

Second thing, to those of you who believe that black people are lazy bums who hang out in the ghetto all the time and are terrible at raising families and holding their own, let me pose to you some food for thought. Cycles like these–ongoing unemployment, crime rates etc. can be stemmed from as far back as the failure of reconstruction after slavery. Many Black families run into cycles of poor education which are very difficult to get out of primarily because of the skewed way that our society treats these people to begin with. Let look at the facts: in this country, if you are African American, you are less likely to be employed after a job interview vs a white person who is given the same interview. Take a look at the studies. So to those of you who think you can just “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps and get a job no matter who you are” I urge you to take a gander at those dark skinned fellows who have been trying to do just that for years and constantly run into obstacles stemming from predisposed judgement of their skin color–I know many.

I am not ashamed of my white race, but I am ashamed that I live in a culture where so many whites do not realize what an advantage they have in the work place relative to blacks, and are encouraged to forget that advantage and to act like it doesn’t exist. Thanks for listening.

Bill Sadie on December 6, 2013 at 3:15 pm

you are an incredible moron…………..there is NO so-called white privilege in this country! NONE! There are plenty of rich black people and plenty of poor white people, you stupid jerkoff! Go back to your koran because you are a closet muslim, no doubt!!!

Dave on April 10, 2013 at 3:10 pm

Sorry, but I’ll pass on the song listening. I’ve done my time in white guilt/angst prison. Barf. Oink.

@Skunky,
There’s some country / folk I like but it’s more the old style. Dare I say Kenny Rogers, does that count? There’s probably a lot of good stuff I’m missing out on.

Frankz on April 9, 2013 at 5:57 pm

Yep, Frankz, there is heaps of good stuff you are missing out on. REAL country is good country. Start with some of the artists I listed. If you have a local college station that plays country music shows, that’s a great place to start (we have 2 awesome ones here “HillBilly @ Harvard” and “Sunday Morning Country”. I didn’t like Country ’til 1997 when I got to hear great stuff. Now, when it’s good, it’s one of my favourite types of music! (The Dixie Chicks were (musically) a great band ’til the nutter lead singer had to ruin it for them all).

Jerry S., sounds like a dopey Black Mooooooslim. If so, he’s a lost cause and it’s cute how a real gone dope like him thinks OTHERS are the problem. I am LOLing! LOLOL!

Skunky on April 9, 2013 at 7:15 pm

Okay, let’s flip this around.

Should blacks have “black guilt” because some blacks commit rape? Should blacks have guilt because some blacks have rioted, committed armed robberies, have kids out of wedlock, failed to be fathers to their children, goofed off at their jobs while whites took up the slack, etc?

If there is going to be collective guilt, there is enough to go around for the black race.

Jonathan E. Grant on April 9, 2013 at 7:13 pm

I happen to like country music. Heck growing up in the hills of West Virginia during the 70s and 80s that was all we had to listen to on the radio. It was funny during my early military career that guys (and gals) were shocked that a black man knew hit songs from entertainers like Alabama, George Jones and my personal favorite Kenny Rogers. That being said Brad Paisley is nothing but a dopey crappy country singer. I put him in the same category as Kenny Chesney and Miranda Lambert. All style with sucky music. Id rather listen to Taylor Swift than any of those clowns. Someone should clue this clown in the fact that slavery ended after the Civil War. Blacks are no longer slaves in this great nation and we have our first ever black (dumbshit)president. If Paisley is feeling so guilty then he should just give all of his money to a black organization and call it a day. I’m sure those race baiting twerps at the National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People would gladly take his check. As for Loud Lips Cool James when was this bums last hit “song”? I find him annoying and he is one of the reasons why I avoid watching NCIS LA. Oh and as to the baggy pants trend that the young black(and nonblack)boys/men are sporting. It looks retarded and what’s worse is when someone my age is wearing his pants that way. Utterly ridiculous.

Wow, first of all, debbie is off base again. LL didnt say people in white country hats are no good. If you read the next line he says “I guess we’re both guilty of judgin’ the cover not the book” good grief before you comment read and re-read to make sure you dont make pointless accusations.

To most of the poster on this topic, its a song, showing 2 points of view, an attempt to bring people together, its not about white guilt or anything else, you people just like drama and whenever someone tries to make a sincere effort at unity, you all just bitch and whine. Its sickening!!!

Big D on April 9, 2013 at 8:46 pm

Brad changed after marrying Kimberly Williams, the actress. He has been leaning toward more socially conscious songs of late. He also is a big fan of the current occupant of the White House. As far as patriotic country artists, I’ll take Trace Adkins, Toby Keith and Kellie Pickler. They are all committed to our troops and have made numerous trips to those Hell Holes we’re defending in the Mid-East and Afghanistan without fanfare and “look at me” PR photo ops.

Why oh why could the shark NOT have eaten LL…

Canadian Steve on April 11, 2013 at 5:37 am

I won’t speak to Brad Paisley but I will on LL Cool J.

“LL Cool J will probably have his Black Card revoked for saying “RIP Robert E. Lee,””

If that didn’t happen over LL Cool J being a registered Republican back in the day (now he is an independent) then it won’t happen on a throwaway rap line.

“For the record, it’s been years since LL Cool J a/k/a James Todd Smith has had a hit song, and back in the day, when he did, he was a “pop” star more than a rapper. He’s not from the hard core rap genre, never really was”

I am certain that LL Cool J did not make this song for the money or fame, as he has had more than his share of both. LL Cool J pop star? That is so wrong on so many levels. LL Cool J was a very hard core rapper, at least in the rap music sense. If you want “pop star” rappers, that would be Will Smith (aka the Fresh Prince). He just wasn’t a “gangsta” rapper. LL Cool J was a huge rap star before the “gangsta” rap scene existed, and definitely long before Biggie Smalls and Notorious B.I.G brought gangsta rap to the east coast, LL Cool J’s scene.

“and the Black guy, LL Cool J, is likening cowboy hats (which many Black people wear–and there were plenty of Black cowboys) to Klan hoods. Huh? LL Cool J also claims that he’s running around like a modern day “Django,” as if slavery–and not affirmative action and government minority set-asides galore–is still in place.”

Two points.
1. Please do not interpret rap lyrics literally. Rap music heavily uses metaphors, symbolism and hyperbole. Also, it is most often used to illustrate how the rapper feels about things, and not how they actually are. Incidentally, LL Cool J acknowledges in the song that his feelings are wrong, that they do not coincide with reality, and that he is as big of a “racist” as Paisley is, and that he wishes that it wasn’t so. If what you want is a black man who basically apologizes for being black and unconditionally worships white people, then LL Cool J is not your guy. But there was nothing that LL Cool J said in that song that would offend anyone who doesn’t take the posture of being perpetually aggrieved at/victimized by black people. Quite the contrary, LL Cool J took a “you can have your thing and I can have mine … live and let live and don’t try to force each other to change” attitude that a conservative who is opposed to political correctness should like. To put it another way, LL Cool J was admitting that he had some negative thoughts and emotions towards white people and A) that negativity is morally wrong and B) he is committed to being civil and fair towards whites despite those negative feelings. The only way that any person could have any problem with that is if you take the posture that all black negative thoughts and emotions towards whites are wrong and illegitimate, but all white negative thoughts and emotions towards blacks are justified and correct. If that is your position, then fine, you are welcome to it, but you aren’t the target audience for this song, no more than the Nation of Islam or Al Sharpton’s National Action Network (perpetually aggrieved and antagonistic black people) is. And as I stated earlier, if you wanted someone to apologize for being black and beg white people for forgiveness and acceptance, LL Cool J isn’t your guy. And by the way, while the steady gig on CSI is nice, a white rapper with LL Cool J’s talent would have sold as many records as Elvis. (Before you protest, please remember that Vanilla Ice was at one point the most commercially successful rapper in history, and that it was Eminem who became the massive cultural phenomenon that had the Oscar-winning movie made about his life despite making songs that were nowhere near as good as LL Cool J’s … not even close.) Don’t think that LL Cool J doesn’t know this. Running around like Django indeed …
2. What percentage of the black population actually benefits from affirmative action and set-asides in your opinion? (I’ve asked this question before and have never gotten a straight answer.) In any case, LL Cool J represents blacks who became productive and successful in this country without ever receiving affirmative action or government set-asides of any sort, which are of course the overwhelming majority of such blacks. Case in point: the affirmative action case at the University of Texas. Blacks make up 5% of the student body at UT. So, yeah, like maybe 0.5% of black college graduates in Texas (or anywhere else) owe their college admission to affirmative action. To put it another way, about 2000 black undergraduates attend the University of Texas in any given year while the undergraduate population of mostly black Prairie View A&M University alone is nearly 7000.

Right on Gerald, School these fake intellectuals. Your post was most astute, and you hit them with good points and most of them wont have anything to respond with but something foolish.

    Big D on April 11, 2013 at 7:18 pm

More on LL Cool J about this song:

“Let bygones be bygones”

“”Martin Luther King says that darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can,” LL Cool J said. “Hate can’t drive out hate, only love can. So what we’re talking about is compassion….”

“I’m not advising anyone to truly forget slavery, but what I’m saying is forget the slavery mentality,” LL Cool J said. “Forget the bitterness. Don’t get bitter, get better.””

So … what was the problem with LL Cool J’s part in this song again? Ah, his failure to talk about the race issue only in the context of black pathology and racial quotas (when both of those are irrelevant to Cool J … he has been making his own money since his teens, and he lives in the same house with his kids … recently defending them by confronting and punching out a home invader with a prior manslaughter conviction). Again, if you feel that Paisley failed to represent the “white side” of the race debate properly I do have some sympathy for that position (i.e. he should have said that he will take off his Confederate flag shirt when black people stop wearing Malcolm X/Black Panther stuff and stop celebrating Kwanzaa) but going after LL Cool J here is totally unreasonable.

Gerald on April 11, 2013 at 9:03 am

Really Gerald. All that looooooong apologia when all you had to say is

“I’m not the most critical thinking Black American. I am sensitive to when people tell the truth about crappy “Black” issues in USA. It makes me so uncommmmmmmmmfortable, so I defend it in a silly manner sometimes”.

Skunky on April 11, 2013 at 1:15 pm

See Gerald, the foolish response you get when you hit these lops with intelligence. Skunky is weak. He comes with some quick witted stuff at times, but his response to your great posts shows that intellectually he’s feeble and limp! Gerald you handed his a** to him!

      Big D on April 11, 2013 at 7:30 pm

LOL, Big Dumb Dinky, you’re just sore because I cut peeps to the quick when they are trying to hide something. Plus, I have no shame about calling the truth the truth.

I am very amused that you think you know me but you obviously don’t. You always *think* I am something I am not. I LOVE it. It shows how very far behind you are and how many years ago the Zombies ate what they thought was your brain. 😀

Skunky on April 13, 2013 at 12:11 pm

Paisleys heart isn’t in country music. he couldn’t make it as a rock and roll band.

steven on April 11, 2013 at 9:58 am

@Gerald,
As far as affirmative action goes.
How would you feel if I told you the only reason I read your mammoth post was out of white guilt?
Do you ever spare a thought for the feelings of white liberals that actually have to wade through this stuff out of a sense of obligation?
They’re just people too Gerald.

The second post was fine, I quite liked that one and I don’t have a problem with LL Cool J’s part in the song or his music.

Hope we hear more from you, just keep it a bit shorter in the name of humanity.
