Huh? She Can’t Afford to Live on $21,000 a Month

By Debbie Schlussel

Most Americans would kill to make nearly $21,000 a month. And most Americans would be able to live well within that with a lot left over. With that kind of money coming in, all of their prayers would be answered, all of their financial problems solved. That’s why there are no tears from me for longtime Psychic Friends Network spokeschick and singer Dionne Warwick, who filed for bankruptcy for the second time, last week. Her absurd expenses compared with the amount of money she has coming in would make any average American’s jaw drop. She’s hardly destitute, just profligate.

Quite what she offered is unclear. In her bankruptcy filing, Warwick – who lives in a rented detached home in the village of South Orange, New Jersey – details monthly expenses of $20,940 and monthly income of $20,950, leaving her just $10 in float.

The monthly outgoings include $5,000 in rent, $5,000 for “housekeeping/sitting”, $4,000 for a personal assistant, $1,000 for electricity, $500 for the telephone, $500 for food and $750 for laundry and dry cleaning.

Most of her income comes from a $14,000 monthly pension, which is supplemented by $2,200 a month in Social Security benefits.

She also receives an average $6,250 a month in wages from Star Girl Productions, the company she lists as her employer. Successful artists commonly set up such entities – known as “loan out corporations” – through which to provide their services and reap legal tax benefits.

I looked at her bankruptcy petition, and Warwick also lists monthly expenses of $300 for a gardener and $200 for a driver to take her to New York. It’s hard to have sympathy for someone like this.

A number of jokesters ask why–as a spokesman for the Psychic Friends operation–she didn’t see this coming. But I’m asking something different: who spends $500 per month on phone charges anymore? And who makes $21,000 a month, but spends nearly half of it on housekeeping/sitting and a personal assistant? An idiot, that’s who. Her cousin, Whitney Houston, died of crack (and other illegal substances), and Warwick’s finances are whack.

Here’s a bit of advice for Ms. Warwick that she could have given herself: if you see someone with their hands out for half your income, Walk On By.

If she fired the maid/house sitter and the personal assistant, she’d be in the black. Maybe her friend, Jesse Jackson, told her that was a racist term. How long ’til he and her other circle of yes men start blaming “raaacism!” for her financial troubles? 3-2-1 . . . .

One other thing I found interesting about Warwick’s finances is that, at one time, she was making $100,000, and yet, a court refused to award alimony or support to her husband. So much for equality, huh?

She tried marriage twice – both times with the same man, William Elliot, a television actor. They wed in 1966, divorced in May 1967, but then remarried three months later. “It was a case of can’t do with, can’t do without, so I married him again,” she later stated.

They had two sons, David and Damon – both of whom now also work in the music industry – but divorced for a second time in 1975. Mr Elliot revealed during divorce proceedings that his wife was, at that time, earning $100,000 a month – 200 times his own income. His demand for $2,000 in spousal support was denied.

Today, he would probably get something.

Yeah, but she’s a sacred cow so you can’t expect her to make ends meat with a measly 21000 – that’s for the rest of us hoi polloi.

Hey if states can borrow beyond their means and then just file bankruptcy individuals can do it to can’t they?

Especially important people Dionne Warwick.
In fact important people like the Jacksons don’t even really need to obey the law anymore apparently so let’s just give it up for them.

When most Americans bow and scrape to make ends meet, she complains she has it too good!

Most people would be content with her circumstances and shut the heck up.

This woman is an example of someone spoiled rotten.

NormanF on April 2, 2013 at 4:10 pm

All I can think of is Warwick and Jesse saying: ” Hang on babe, We’s gonna get fat offa dis hawg.”

Bobby99 on April 2, 2013 at 4:02 pm

Yup… I don’t have sympathy for a selfish wealthy woman who can’t take care of herself and wouldn’t care for her ex and her own children, who deserved better.

Cry me a river!

NormanF on April 2, 2013 at 4:07 pm

That’s just crazy. And $10 million in taxes owed to the IRS? How do these people like her and Willie Nelson get to this point?

DS_ROCKS! on April 2, 2013 at 5:06 pm

Yep! I’m wondering where in the heck all of the millions she earned in her career went. Did she hire one of those unscrupulous “business managers” who stole all her money and didn’t pay the IRS and moved to South America? You know, some people just shouldn’t ever have money. Clearly, a person who cannot make ends meet on $20,000 a month, is an idiot. It’s like the multi-million-dollar lottery winners who end up blowing it all and five years later are back in the same double-wide they were living in before they won.

From the articles I’ve read it sounds like this is a move to get the IRS off her back AGAIN. She claims that she has paid off her actual back taxes, but the interest and penalties (which are a fraction of what she owed) are what she doesn’t want to pay, so she’s looking for a judge to let her off the hook for that. Good luck with that, Dionne…

A tax cheat too – why isn’t in prison for tax evasion and fraud?

Like Leona Helmsley famously said, “the other life is for the little people.”

In my opinion, wealth reveals a person’s true character and we see it clearly here.

NormanF on April 2, 2013 at 5:11 pm

I wonder if she has a personal butt wiper?

Hollywood on April 2, 2013 at 5:37 pm

The second funniest newspaper headline I have ever read in my life was “Psychic Friends Network Files For Bankruptcy Due To Unforeseen Circumstances.” The only one I can think of that was funnier (and coincidentally, also from the mid 1990s) was “Bodyguard Fingers Tonya Harding And Her Husband.”

Irving on April 2, 2013 at 6:04 pm

Such a waste of skin, the entire thing. I was forced to work with idiots that would proudly claim to “support” stooges like these two and Jamie Fox as well. They’d typically enjoy buying bootleg items of copy cat crap like DVD’s, purses, and anything else that was convenient. Bankrupt on the inside as well as on the outside. JJ in on some of dis? Whatr da odds?

samurai on April 2, 2013 at 6:14 pm

The way my life is structured right now I could live on $21,000 a YEAR, if that was clear after tax money. I’d be fine, with that much for a YEAR. And to think that this woman made some nice music way back when, which I enjoyed very much listening to. Somewhere along the line, one of her psychic friends stole her mind. That’s what happens when you get in to all that stuff, your mind has a tendency to become bankrupt. Oops, did I say bankrupt? On $21,000 a MONTH???!?!??!??!!!!

Hey Debbie, the Walk On By joke was . . .

BWAAAAHAHAHHAAHAAAAAAAHHHHHHAAAAAAAA!!! Very cool.

Alfredo from Puerto Rico on April 2, 2013 at 8:55 pm

Debbie,

You should post the bankruptcy petition. I’d like to get her home address, so I can look at her rented house to see how extravagant she is.

Maybe she needs an assistant because she is now elderly. Does she still work?

I know how far I could stretch $21,000, but I’d like to know why she needs to spend $500 on phones. I would like to know why she needs an assistant and housekeeper. Is she too frail to do her own housekeeping? Does she need an assistant because she is still traveling and performing? I know that a lot of performers, even those not on the A list anymore, need someone to travel with them, to make sure everything gets done and attends to logistical details, that there are no foul-ups, etc.

She is not one of the more obnoxious entertainers around these days, so I’d be more willing to cut her the benefit of a little doubt compared to some of the other prima donnas and divas and spoiled brats parading around these days.

BethesdaDog on April 2, 2013 at 11:34 pm

I look at that income, and simply gag. She needs to sell the house and give up the other goodies. I suspect that some of those expenses mask a massive drug habit.

Worry01 on April 3, 2013 at 1:50 am

I seem to recall in 2002, Ms. Warwick had been arrested on charges of marijuana possession, charges that were later dropped during a plea bargain. She claimed at the time she needed it to fight the effects of glaucoma. Yeah, right. She was also a lifelong smoker which took a massive toll on her voice over the decades (once in a mezzo-soprano range, long since reduced to that of a contralto).

ConcernedPatriot on April 21, 2013 at 4:02 am

Can’t she consolidate the maid, the personal assistant, the gardener and the driver into one person, pay that person a fraction of the total but more than the highest she’s individually paying, and save a bundle there?

I agree – while babysitters may be a necessity, I find it hard to justify any of those other expenses. If I was making $20k a month, I’d probably be starting my own business. What’s it about celebrities that make them complete retards when it comes to managing their money?

Infidel on April 3, 2013 at 4:46 am

I would also say that she needs to be prosecuted for tax evasion.

Worry01 on April 3, 2013 at 4:49 am

@Worry, Probably spot on.

samurai on April 3, 2013 at 5:54 am

Assuming, of course, that the personal assistant is really a personal assistant.

Little Al on April 3, 2013 at 9:38 am

Do you know the way to State Prison in San Jose?

Truth on April 3, 2013 at 11:40 am

I see what you did there.

    DS_ROCKS! on April 3, 2013 at 6:30 pm

500.00 for PHONE SERVICE???

Has this DOB every heard of bundles? I’m sure she can ask her provider.

1000.00 for electricity??? Fluorescent lighting can save her to up a 1/3-2/3 of the cost.

And a “personal assistant”? I know that some people conisder that as a euphemism. But I digress.

The Reverend Jacques on April 3, 2013 at 11:50 am

It all depends on what you “need.” Needs differ from person to person and is entirely subjective.

But I do agree with better management of her finances, she would be getting better quality service at a fraction of the cost.

That’s why you shop around in this country for the best quality/price. Its not that hard to do.

NormanF on April 3, 2013 at 2:37 pm

Even Judge Judy could see through this application. Rented house? who is she renting from? a shelf company with unknown directors no doubt.

Aron B on April 3, 2013 at 5:27 pm

Aron,

With $21,000 a month, she should be able to pay off the mortgage on a nice condo or townhome.

A woman like her shouldn’t even need to rent.

NormanF on April 4, 2013 at 5:47 am

So much news for another fake, phony fraud black.. that we are suppposed to feel sorry for becusae she is a black, bankrupt woman. thanks for your post on this disgusting woman.

Panhandle on April 4, 2013 at 1:08 pm

Stupid bitch. It pisses me off to see someone who should be set for life financially squander all her money. I guarantee you I could live on just her social security benefits.

Janis on April 9, 2013 at 7:07 pm
