Meet Dr. Blum, Obama Agent of Gun Control

Barack Obama’s statist gun control package dovetails all too conveniently with a lawsuit just filed by the widow of a victim of the Colorado Batman shooting at a movie theater showing of “The Dark Knight.” Chantel Blunk filed suit against Dr. Lynne Fenton, a psychiatrist who treated mass murderer James Holmes. In her lawsuit, Blunk argues that the psychiatrist should have told police about her patient. And that’s what Barack Obama wants your doctor to do about you. It’ll put a stunning crimp on the health of Americans and turn all of your doctors into the thought police. Thought police like my former pediatrician, Dr. George Blum. He’d take everyone’s guns away if he could.

Dr. Obama & Dr. Van Nostrand: Bend Over! Or Keep These Fake Doctors Away From Your Guns

When I was a kid, I went for years to Dr. Blum. I have no complaints about his check-ups or his treatment. But he was an orthodox liberal who mistook his leftist political views for healthcare. I learned this years later, when I was running for the Michigan House of Representatives for a second time, having lost by just one vote the first time around. I was endorsed by the Michigan State Medical Society, and I held a fundraiser for doctors at a friend’s lakeside home. While it was sparsely attended, the event was a huge success because most doctors were at work but they sent checks (which is the point of a campaign fundraiser). But who did attend? My childhood doctor, Dr. Blum. And so did then-Michigan State Medical Society lobbyist Gregory Aronin. When Dr. Blum heard I was also endorsed by the NRA (which gave me an A+ rating), he hit the roof.

And, after the fundraiser, I learned that, because of my NRA endorsement, Dr. Blum and Greg Aronin were badmouthing me to other doctors, urging them to support my trial lawyer opponent who made a career of suing doctors (and screwing up the lawsuits and losing). Thereafter, the Michigan State Medical Society, while officially endorsing me–a medical doctor’s daughter committed to ending lawsuit abuse against doctors–was working to help my opponent, a trial lawyer endorsed by the biggest plaintiffs’ medical malpractice lawyers in Michigan and telling doctors it was okay to help him. They cared more about supporting gun control–NOT a medical issue or of any concern to modern medicine–than they did about helping doctors. They were Obama-esque apparatchiks of the state before Obama’s time.

Apparently, if it were up to Dr. Blum, no private citizen in America would own a gun, especially not a right-winger. And he’s not alone. Although doctors tend to be conservative (my dear late father was an MD who strongly supported the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms), there are plenty of Dr. Blums who are not pediatricians, but doctors for adults. And they want to be arms of the nanny state, to decide what is good for you, and impose their political views on your life, using medicine as an excuse. Is it any of their business whether I do or don’t choose to exercise my Second Amendment rights? Nope. It has nothing to do with healthcare. And even with psychiatrists–who exist in a field that is more art than science and made up somewhat of many egomaniacs who need a psychiatrist much more than they need to be one, they don’t really know for sure whether most people are in a state sufficient to sanely operate a gun and have the good judgment to decide when gun use is appropriate.

It reminds me of a “Seinfeld” episode in which one doctor thought Elaine was being too difficult and he made a very negative notation in her medical records. Thereafter, every single doctor she want to saw the records and already had a pre-conceived notion that she was crazy and a troublesome patient. To get the reference deleted, she tried to get Kramer to pose as “Dr. Van Nostrand” and get her records. Didn’t work too well. And you’ll be facing the same thing that was in that far-fetched comedy. It’s not so far-fetched anymore with Barack Obama employing your doctor as the newest agent of Big Brother.

Do we really want to turn our doctors into thought police like Dr. Blum, who not only hate conservatives and guns, but think that the two should never mix? Even with good doctors who don’t include political views in their assessments of patients, they will err on the side of caution so that they don’t have to defend lawsuits like James Holmes’ psychiatrist now faces. They will err on the side of reporting everyone. And everything, no matter how minor, will now be a federal case. After all, who seeing a psychiatrist should be barred from getting a gun? Should every patient seeking that help from a mental health professional? Or just some? And how do we delineate which ones? Will the psychiatrists who follow Jung say one thing about a patient’s mental capacity? And psychiatrists who follow more modern, New Age methods say another? Likely.

And it’ll crimp all other areas of medicine and treatment. Someone is less likely to tell his or her doctor why or how he or she got into a particular medical emergency or contracted a particular illness if they know it will lead to reporting to police and a list of individuals banned from owning guns. People will be less likely to see a doctor and/or go to a hospital because they don’t want to be on that “banned from owning guns” list.

I don’t want guys like George Blum deciding whether or not I get to own guns. It’s a right I already have, and they shouldn’t be able to wantonly take it away.

But in Obama’s new post-liberty world, I may have to enlist my own Dr. Van Nostrand. And so will you.

I agree. You could find yourself deprived of your Second Amendment right administratively. You will be on a list, and that will be circulated around the entire country if Obama’s information sharing and universal background check goes through. Is someone suffering from Depression a homicidal maniac? Has anyone thought how this will actually discourage people from even seeking any medical care? Debbie noted how patients would be less forthcoming with their doctors if what they said could and would be used against them at a future date. This is really creppy.

People in New York are going to buy guns and ammo out of state and they’re not going to report that to the police.

A law’s effectiveness depends on voluntary compliance. In gun-grabbing states, that will be close to zero.

That’s already law in New York, in which mental health care professionals must now report “at risk patients” to the state if they’re suspected of being a threat to themselves or to others. Great way to encourage mentally ill people to seek the health care they so badly need!

The new gun control law there also bans military-style semi-automatic rifles and places a limit on how many ammo rounds you can load into them. Less freedom of choice for gun owners.

Finally, New York created the nation’s first gun registry, which is a prelude to eventual confiscation of every one’s guns. Which by the way makes scofflaws out of law-abiding citizens who will never register their guns with it for precisely that reason.

After all, the long-gun registry worked so well in Canada that we had to have it here. Except the Canadian government came to its senses and finally abolished it.

The other thing about this law and others like it waiting in the wings is that its meant to make grandstanding anti-Second Amendment politicians look like they’re doing someone about crime.

What it won’t do is prevent a future Sandy Hook-style massacre. When you take away by fiat Americans’ gun rights, you’re disarming the good guys! That’s what anti-Second Amendment politicians and anti-gun doctors don’t get.

The armed bad guys will always be with us, they can always get a gun, they can always kill people and no gun control law in the world will ever stop them.

That’s the bottom line. America has the Second Amendment for a good reason – actually too many of them to list here.

The number of over three hundred million guns is inflated by including military and law enforcement firearms. Do they need to be restricted as well?

In the end, you have about a quarter of the population of three hundred and eleven million is armed. Note that the legislation in New York State was not even aimed at preventing a school massacre, as noted by Norman. The people behind such gun control legislation simply wish to create a dependent and helpless population under the guise of making us all safer.

Actually, there is ONLY ONE PRIMARY reason for the 2nd Amendment, which greatly overshadows all of the other auxiliary reasons: it’s to ensure that an armed citizenry can always shoot back (with an EQUAL or GREATER amount of force) against a tyrannical government which is threatening them and/or their neighbors, associates, or loved ones. George Mason (who actually wrote the 2nd Amendment) and Thomas Jefferson, in their respective discourses on this topic, made that absolutely clear (you can Google the quotations easily enough). Running a CLOSE SECOND, just behind that PRIMARY reason, is for self-defense, against non-governmental criminals. Nowhere is “deer hunting” mentioned in this coriginal ontext — AT ALL! So when Der Fuehrer Andrew Cuomo screams, like a maniac (remember the film footage of Hitler, screaming the same way? deja vu . . . ) at the top of his lungs, that “no one NEEDS TEN BULLETS, to shoot a deer!!!” someone should inform him, publicly, on the spot, for all the cameras to see, and the microphones to record, that he’s not even talking about the correct context of the 2nd Amendment. His ignorance and pettifogging should be exposed, in a very public manner, for what it is.

HIPAA regulations DO allow for breach of confidentiality to be allowed in situations like this, for the NP here.

I’m a board certfied psychiatrist who trained at UCLA, which was the original defendant of the Tarasoff case. Essentially, if you know that someone is seriously dangerous to another person, usually by overt threat, you are generally obligated to protect that potential victim to the best of your ability. That might include: hospitalizing the potential murderer, contacting/warning the police (or appropriate agency), or warning the victim.

If this warning is done in good faith, the notifier is immune from malpractice suits in all states I have practiced in. This has been in place for decades.

If the person being threatened is the President or VEEP, etc. the Secret Service is contacted as both person/police agency.

My understanding is that the psychiatrist involved (I am aware of this through newsstories/public data only)did contact the University police agency involved.

Essentially folks, I will protect your confidentiality unless you are abusing old people, babies, attempting to kill yourself (trying to use confidentiality rules to torture their MDs are quite common tactics among the mentally ill), or trying to kill someone else. Now, if you are hospitalized I generally will monitor you to see if you are still a danger if I am forced to discharge you (court refuses to extend Commitment order).

Don’t kill people; contact a sharp attorney to do cruel things for you. I don’t have to notify anyone of that.

And my dear Skunky, I generally spend my time trying to figure out hhow to keep people alive. Given that meth abuse can closely resemble bipolar disorder, chronic MJ use can induce schizophrenia, and synthetic Marijuana can look like meth abuse AND can’t be picked up by normal drug screens, I have enough problems. The DSM-5 may have some problems, but I deal with the major league.

It will be interesting to see if any of the relevant professional medical organizations (AMA, APA, etc.) take a position against this encroachment. And will they support Dr. Harper? Will there be countersuits against this totalitarian reach for more power?

Political compatibility with a mental health professional, while never before an absolute requirement, has frequently been something to consider, and will now be even more important. With rare exceptions, such as an unusually competent and objective liberal, it will be important, for a potential patient’s own protection to sound out a prospective provider before entering a therapeutic relationship, or even a relationship with an internist.

And it will just increase the stigma of seeking psychiatric care, which already exists. And if you see a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Clinical Psychologist? FOREGT ABOUT IT. THEY ARE THE MOST LIBERAL PEOPLE, ON THE WHOLE, UNDER THE SUN. They would report their own family.

But as I’ve said before, there is a fundamental compatibility between liberalism, as defined today, and totalitarianism, and Rush Limbaugh for once, deserves credit for making that point today.

Just like you report on your neighbors if they don’t empty their garbage the right way, water their lawns the right way, provide the right ‘home environment’ for child education, etc., we have taken another step towards 1984.

And is it such a big step to reporting to the authorities if someone says the wrong thing in class or at work?

You’re thinking about an event Debbie implied but didn’t mention explicitly in her article: the Soviet abuse of medicine and particularly, psychiatry, in the service of political ends. One way to deal with troublesome Soviet dissents was to declare them insane and keep them forcibly confined in the asylum.

The larger point being that she makes today is while this might begin with guns with the best of intentions, it won’t stop there. Its a slippery slope. And the most totalitarian of people in this country are all the do-gooders trying to run our lives… for our own good, of course.

Freedom is not always lost at the barrel of a gun. Sometimes it can be a creeping thing indeed and like the webmaster of this site likes to often say on here, the most terrifying words in the English language are: “this is your government and we are here to help.”

As we learned in New York yesterday, the consequences of its intervention isn’t always salutary to the great object of preserving our liberty.

But yes, it seems that one way of judging the freedom of a society is by the role of psychiatrists, and the definitions of mental illness. It has always been politicized, but we ain’t seen nothing yet.

Obama wants to enlist doctors to make sure their patients are politically correct. And that will chill patient trust in their doctor. If you don’t know what your doctor’s views are or he might act out of legal preservation anyway, its best not to be completely candid. There are certain things that are no one’s business – not your doctor’s and certainly not the government’s. Period.

Worry, Little Al & Norman, you all did a great job bringing the crux of the issue to the forefront. Indeed. Collectively, your posts say it all.

Even before Obama-PutinCare ruins the whole medical system I’d like to point out that mental-health care in 2013 is exceedingly crappy and those who need it most are up against it in a Sisyphean way. What many mentally ill people have against them (and I am not speaking of the super-duper heavy illnesses like Schizophrenia) is that

1) contrary to their state of mind (and overall abilities) most mentally ill would have to dig down deep and fight their way out of past bad behaviours or coping skills. This gets very involved but what I am trying to bottom line is that mentally ill peeps most of the time need to try harder than what they do. Being ill can sometimes be a crutch. Most clinicians do NOT work this way and do help keep the patients in ‘victim’ mode. This doesn’t work. In fact, it makes it worse.

2) Most people in 2013 just don’t care about others to really help some of these sorts the way they need it. I’m not talking about enabling, but people are more self-centered than ever and everyone is on their own these days (it seems). And this means in-Hospital care for the mentally ill. I find the whole system weak and ineffective.

3) In the PC world of mental-heath, not only is the DSM very political, it also scrubs very important affective disorders when they shouldn’t. Look at narcissism. My goodness it’s legion these days but it will not be in the next DSM. Also, many clinicians can’t openly diagnose people with their disorders (for lack of a better word) because it’s waaaaaay too un-PC. I am namely thinking of Sociopaths/Psychopaths. It’s my opinion that it is IMPERATIVE to label these monsters properly (and at the youngest age possible) but many clinicians don’t because it is frowned upon. That means in the end more people are victims and end up hurt. PC wins again while real people suffer.

4) They overly diagnose and everyone has a ‘disorder’. Look at BiPolar Disorder. I do think that is a serious disorder but I don’t take it seriously anymore because everyone and their Grandma-ma has been diagnosed with it. It’s a pity for those who *REALLY* have it. Watered down and not taken seriously anymore. Personally, I have NEVER, ever believed in ADD. That’s another fraud diagnosis. Just don’t believe in it.

That’s just a few thoughts on the mental-health aspect of this but Obama-Putin is really just doing two things (quite successfully) now…destroying the GOP (who are letting him destroy them) and solidifying his dictatorial powers without seeming like he is. This is serious crap. If you’re not scared you’re NOT getting it.

Skunky,for Barack Obama, it is enough to have a program or policy. The actual workings of a program or policy is for him a boring detail unworthy of his notice. This lackadaisical attitude on Barack Obama’s part can be seen in his choices of appointees, whether it is Janet Napolitano or Eric Holder. Earlier in 2009, his Cash for Clunkers program was an insane subsidy for upper income people who could afford to buy a car. In addition, this program destroyed perfectly good vehicles and limited the amount of scrap that could be take from each used vehicle. This little endeavor reduced the number of used vehicles in the marketplace that ran, and thus increased their prices. A poorer person now faced a market in which a safe and affordable used car was simply unaffordable. What remained were ancient vehicles from the 80’s or 90’s that barely ran and were quite often not even safe to drive. However, Obama like the name of the program, so he went through with it. These Obama schemes frequently left quite a mess for others to deal with when inevitable problems arose. Barack Obama is the stereotypical bad manager who tries to impress his superiors, rather than actually doing his job.

Worry, boy did you nail it with your wise words on “Cash For Clunkers”. I totally agree with you and to add what you said, it proves (in one example) that Obama-Putin doesn’t give a sh** about the poor. He’s one of the most odious frauds I’ve ever been forced to endure!

And to piggy-back on that (and what you said) the other frustrating variable is that a good number of retardos think he’s a great guy and that he is super smart and such a nice guy. The reality is not ingested by them.

EVERYTHING that POS Obama-Putin says should NOT be believed. It doesn’t matter in 2013 that there is bona fide proof he’s a huckster and fraud no matter how you slice him…many don’t want to see it. It’s crazy-making.

Guns don’t cause crime. People do. So, there is no such thing as “gun violence.” It is violence, violent crime, and the way to deal with it is vigorous prosecution, tough sentencing and no tolerance towards crime prevailing social attitudes. By letting the debate shift to “gun violence vs. 2nd amendment rights” and away from “tough on crime vs. soft on crime”, conservatives lose the battle from the very beginning.

Whatever mental issues Adam Lanza and James Holmes had, they were/are both criminals

I wonder if anyone is going to be so stupid as to tell their doctor they have a gun. As for those gun lists, how accurate do you really think they are. Do they think it is impossible to buy a gun in another state? I have several guns. My dad bought them. He died in 1979. I have married and moved 4 times since then. They did not appear on any will or documentation. I just took them when he died. Do you really think that is the first thing I will do if I move to another state? Especially in the present atmosphere. I don’t think I am the only one in this position.

What’s all the fuss about? President Obama and his team of administrators know what’s best for our nation, our states, our cities, our societies, our families, and all the details of our lives. President Obama really cares about our children, unlike you second amendment freaks, who blindly cling to an outmoded constitution that has no applicability to the exigencies of today’s busy lifestyles.

I look forward to the day when science advances to the point that an electronic device can be permanently implanted into the brain of every person in the U.S. so that any potential thoughts about any potentially violent act (or any thoughts deemed potentially improper by the existing administration) can be promptly monitored for immediate governmental administrative action.

Meanwhile, President Obama must control guns that pose a clear and present danger to our children, and to our children’s children. We must stop civilians from holding guns. If you don’t want to do it for your own safety and peace of mind, at least support it for your children’s sake. I have great faith in the leadership of our President and in his sagacity and judgment on these matters, and I urge you to support him in all of his efforts.

My issues with this…

Health care providers are not government employees, he is attempting to make deputies of all of them.

We have this tricky little law called HIPPA which prevents us from disclosing information, so what would stop a lwasuit if you disclosed. Looks like you get sued either way.

If asked if I own a gun, I will simply state “no”, “none of your business might raise suspician”.

Thsi will drive truly sick individuals away from much needed health care.

As a NP, I have no intentions of following this guideline.

Please, tell all not to disclose conservative politics to a mental health professions lest you be pathologized for your beliefs. As most are far left leaning. And do not disclose info about your fire arms, if possible.
In NY Gov Cuomo who screamed like Hitler “who needs 10 bullets to kill a deer” (as if the 2nd amendment was about deer hunting) has a new law that says I (as a mental health professional) must ‘turn in’ people I deem dangerous and they can then lose their license to have firearms.
Some psychologists are having patients sign a form that says they are aware of this new law.
I’m not sure what to do. I’ve never had the dangerous person situation come up but am used to screening for suicide/homocidal intent.
I would not want to remove anyone’s second amendment rights. If a person requires hospitalization, I assume they cannot take a fire arm with them.
Cuomo is an aspiring dictator and Obama is a full fledged one.

The rules proposed by his majesty already exist in California. When one first sees his shrink the client is advised that the doctor is required to notify authorities if the patient has suicidal ideation or may do harm to others. Otherwise there is doctor patient confidentiality.

The gun ban, by the way, applies to people who are INVOLUNTARILY LONG TERM TREWATED as inpatients in Minnesota. Which is as it should be.

I generally recommend that my severly depressed patients get rid of their guns until their spouse feels comfortable bringing it back in after they feel better.

Common sense should prevail, folks.

And Bless You Debbie, for your stand on frivolous medical lawsuits. I look at every patient as a potential lawsuit in doing risk evaluations, and sometimes will explain it to my patients in EXACTLY that way. (If you are dead at your own hands, this is what I should do to defend myself from your family’s lawsuit, so this is why I am protecting you in the following way—)

Again, I’m a busy enough guy, and I hate homicidal idiots who try to wrap psychiatric illness around their murderous desires.

Skunky, I am sorry that all you have seen are idiot diagnosticians. By the time the ADHDers get to see me in rural settings, they have screwed up their lives pretty badly. It is a fairly obvious diagnosis, and I don’t extend it to those who are lazy. My son has ADHD and is responding well to his meds, which help make school possible and pleasantly doable for him. Given his biological mother’s history, it makes a lot of sense why he would have it.

To clue you in a bit on this—every week I get another job offer, at a minimum. More if I was looking, which I don’t, since my practice pays me $340 K a wear, roughly, with no overhead of malpractice, office expense, billing expense. I have a defined benefit pension that will pay me about $100K a year when I retire, PLUS a 403 (b) plan. The defined benefit pension plan is 50% funded by me, by the way. MN is a frugally run state. I work ALL the time, on 24/7 call 50% of the time, but I love this job, and the social beneficial aspect, since I work with 3 Native American Rezzes, is off the charts. A LOT of job satisfaction.

But I NEVER have to hunt for patients; they are slammed on my doorstep. When I diagnose ADHD it is generally unwillingly. However, the human brain is THE most complex structure in the universe, and to assume a major function like attention can’t go off kilter is foolish.

More and more, psychiatrists are overwhelmed with work; we don’t have to go hunting. At least I never have—I have always been busy from my 8th day of Private practice in 1993. And for the past 5 year I have been in the top 5% of my profession in terms of income earned (to do the best, one should be a Forensic Psychiatrist, but the number of decent and moral attorneys is not the highest, Debbie being an extraordinary example of many superb things in her life; in addition, I don’t like conflict; I prefer cooperation.).

The point of this is not how fantastic I am; it is to point out that most psychiatrists have the luxury of calling them like they see ’em. This will grow greater in the coming years as there will be fewer psychiatrists per capita rather than more.

That should be “years,” plural. The reason why psychiatry will not go up in numbers is that it is among the lowest paying specialties; only peds pays less (to get my income I have to be on paid call 1 in 2; I make $98.64/hr routinely, and 1/4 that for the 128 hours of call I do bi-weekly. I make $98.64 for each hour of call back into the hospital after hours, am paid $98.64 for 8 hours if I am on call for holidays plus 24 hours of call (no pay back in time, so I get that in hours), and that’s it. That makes me one of the highest paid psychiatrists in the US. We have almost NO procedures, you see.

The average kid out of medical school is looking at a $200-$250 K debt, with a salary that will actually start to pay that back starting in the early to late 30s. It is important to point out that someone like Debbie’s Dad would have done, if I recall, 6-7 years of residency AFTER 4 years of medical school AFTER 4 years of undergrad.For psychiatry, unless one does forensics or child, it is 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of medical school, 4 years of residency. The years of residency for a psyciatrist are about 80 hours a week on site, if I remember (at age 50, I’m still putting in 50-60 hours on site a week), for many other specialties, especially the surgical ones, it is closer to 100-110 hours/week.

The point I am making is that more and more students will be going into more asnd more lucrative specialties as the years will go on. So I look forward to a dearth of fellow psychiatrists per capita as the years go on. Great for me.
