“Wheel of Fortune” Did What?! Then ABC News Did What?! – VIDEOs

By Debbie Schlussel

Something that happened on “Wheel of Fortune,” last week, is telling. But what ABC News did to blame it on Pat Sajak is even more telling on how the news media lies and makes up stuff (not that this is news to us, but it’s yet another stark example).

reneedurettewheeloffortune

The “Wheel of Fortune” judges refused to award Renee Durette, a Navy Intel Specialist from Florida, thousands of dollars she won the game show because she used the folksy Southern vernacular in pronouncing “Seven Swans-A-Swimming.” I think she was robbed. I don’t drop my “g”s at the end of “ing” words, but many Americans do. It’s common in the American English vernacular. And I wonder, if a Black Ebonics speaker was on the show and pronounced it that way, would the judges on the show deny him/her the prizes? I doubt it. And if they did, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would get the race cards ready to play. Maybe they don’t like Americans serving in the military or Red State Southerners. What do you think? Should they have awarded her the prize for guessing the phrase? Watch the video below.

Then, watch the second video below. On it, ABC News–both its anchor and the reporter–lie and blame it on Pat Sajak. But if you watch the first video, it’s clear that this wasn’t Pat Sajak’s decison. It was the decision of the game show’s judges, not Sajak, who set off the buzzer. But with clever editing ABC News made it look like it was Pat Sajak’s decision, and the anchor SAYS it was “the host” Pat Sajak’s decision. Not true. I wonder if this has something to do with the fact that Sajak is an avowed conservative and once hosted a FOX News show. Hmm . . . . In the third video, ABC finally admits it was the “Wheel of Fortune” judges. Watch that video, as it raises the question: does “Wheel of Fortune” hate Southerners?

Regardless, she was robbed!

I usually don’t say Liberal Retards (or Vermin) anymore, because the term is a redundancy. I’m not surprised that Libvermin did this. Scum.

Occam's Tool on December 26, 2012 at 5:51 pm

The level of corruption just seems to grow and grown. If there is fraud involved, the waiver that contestant signed could be set aside. That game show’s producers may have to write a very big check to make this go away. Something as flagrant as this is not something you would want to take before a jury.

Worry01 on December 26, 2012 at 5:54 pm

Actually, my wife is from Alabama, has a pronounced Southern accent, and Yankees think she’s not too swift because of her accent, despite the fact that she had TWO CONCURRENT FULL RIDE academic scholarships at ‘Bama, and graduated with a degree in accounting summa cum laude. It annoys the hell out of her, and she’s not a woman to be easily crossed.

This was a stupid decision by the judges.

Occam's Tool on December 26, 2012 at 5:54 pm

If (Unfortunately) obama gets to name nominees to the Supreme Court, he could look to this group of “Judges.” Surely they’d be as qualified as his past appointees – Kagan and Sotomayor……

herbster on December 27, 2012 at 7:06 am

Well, it was OK to cheat her because in addition to being from the South, she is an evil militarist. And, horror of horror, she is overweight. What would Mrs. Obama say if she won?

That aside, Renee Durette struck me as pretty smart. She made no mistakes, and all her guesses (including the ‘g’), were correct. If she named the ‘g’ herself, in one of her guesses, how could they say she was wrong? I guess they know that being in the military, she will not sue, because the politically correct military leadership would bounce her.

Little Al on December 26, 2012 at 5:54 pm

Rules is rules. Thems southerners needs to speaks coreklee.

Dale Zalaoras on December 26, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Dale, if this were done to a Black contestant, the house would be falling down. I suggest that you try your act in South Central Los Angeles.

    Worry01 on December 26, 2012 at 7:28 pm

I can’t help but notice that Mr. Obama – and his angry wife – often “Drop their G’s” when speaking to certain minority groups – Blacks, Union members, teachers, etc. It keeps them “In touch and folksy.” Shrillery does the same thing. Remember, “I ain’t no way tired?” This lady was military – that was strike one against her. She was from the South. That was strike two. She won a bunch of $$. That was strike three. She should hire the best lawyer(s) on the planet (I’m sure they would work pro-bono) and sue the scum at ABC. Doesn’t the media, I should say, The state run media, have any interest here. Nah. Too busy trying to get that slimy weasel, Little David Gregory, off the hot seat!

herbster on December 27, 2012 at 7:08 am

And look which accent President Obama uses in situations such as you named: a SOUTHERN accent! ESPECIALLY around African-Americans in the South *itself*!!

So if you’re from the south and the phrase has such words as syrup, pecans, aunt, mayonnaise, dog, log, fog or coffee, then you already have read the phrase wrong.

Boycott Wheel’s advertisers – make a list of them tonight
and let them know why you’re doing it.

Nir Leiu on December 26, 2012 at 6:57 pm

My first reaction to her saying swimmin’ and not swimming is that she shouldn’t be awarded the prize. I equate her failures similar to those of a WR catching the ball and securing both feet in bounds and then not maintaining control of the ball as they hit the ground out of bounds, it’s an incomplete pass and what she said was an incomplete sentence! It’s irrelevant where she’s from or who she is, she got the answer wrong period.

We can all speculate on “what ifs”, but sloppy articulation shouldn’t be rewarded on this type of show. The judges were right, she was wrong and wasn’t robbed of anything!

What’s sad in all this is the state of our military! What does it say of us as a nation when even members of our military are obese? Sad isn’t it?

Kershaw on December 26, 2012 at 7:16 pm

Speaking of articulation, you used the comparative ‘my first reaction’. But you apparently haven’t had a second reaction yet. I can’t wait!

Ms. Durette is not in combat. Does it really matter if she is overweight? And dropping a pass is the same as failing to enunciate a letter when she has already placed the letter in the word, and obviously captured the substance of the expression? Analogies are always risky…I could think of a dozen others where substantial completion is virtually the same as completion. That’s the trouble with analogies, kind of like lawyers, they can find an argument to support anything they want.

And sloppy enunciation shouldn’t be rewarded on ‘this type of show’? On what type of show should it be rewarded then? You really need to pay more attention to your own woeful syntax before you start criticizing others’.

And like other yokels, you can’t resist gratuitous criticism of her. What in the world does her weight have to do with her performance on the so-called Wheel of Fortune? You are just betraying your own prejudices.

I am really getting tired of these fools who criticize the cultural posts because they don’t have the guts to criticize Debby’s political posts.

Little Al on December 26, 2012 at 9:41 pm

Big gay Al, why don’t you button up that shirt because we’re not amused with your nipple sticking out like that! All kidding aside though, the first thing that you need to be aware of is the definition of the word “articulation” (The formation of clear and distinct sounds in speech: “the articulation of vowels and consonants”). The word “enunciation” would be a synonym which I applaud you for using.

What type of show would reward sloppy enunciation? I don’t think Bob Barker ever cared if any contestant said “one dolla'” rather than “one dollar”, so “The Price is Right” would fall into that category.

Does it really matter if Ms. Durette is in combat or not? She is a member of our military appearing on TV in full uniform, but she looks completely out of shape! It just doesn’t look good. Her weight has nothing to do with her performance on WOF, it reflects on the basic requirements of our military and that’s what I find to be sad.

Now onto syntax. I’m not an English professor and I will undoubtedly make the occasional syntax, spelling or grammar mistake in my posts. However, I’m not going to have you call my syntax woeful when you are the one using the words “But” & “And” to start a sentence.

Lastly, her name is Debbie not Debby!

Kershaw on December 26, 2012 at 11:13 pm

Your stupidity and inability to answer me are evident from the first sentence of your response. Really pathetic. But interesting because your first sentence shows the hostility underneath the phony intellectual veneer.

Yes, you certainly are not an English professor, although with the decline in standards, based on PC, you seem to have pretensions in that direction.

And, fool that you are, you are unable to realize that articulation means the ability to express yourself coherently in words. I guess you haven’t learned that most words, including relatively complex ones such as ‘articulation’ are not limited to one cherry-picked meaning. In your case, using the comparative ‘first’ when there is no ‘second’ is, indeed a speech error, showing your limited ability to use words effectively, raising extreme doubts about your ability to criticize others for much more minor ‘errors’ of dropping ‘g’s’ on TV programs.

And nitwit that you are, you missed the point of my criticism of your comment about Ms. Durette’s excess poundage, namely that it is completely irrelevant to whether she was treated unfairly. Your comment is completely gratuitous in that context, the only one that counts here. If the post were about whether Ms. Durette is properly adhering to military standards, it would be relevant, although, again, she is not in combat. And no one except a jerk like you, who is obviously prejudiced against gays, and who knows who else, really cares about her weight.

Using ‘but’ and ‘and’ to begin a sentence? There was some jerk a few weeks ago (probably you — I can’t remember the nonentity’s pen name). You were wrong then, and you are wrong now, since, as I said then, ignoring your incorrect attempt at presenting yourself as a literate person, it is an appropriate rhetorical device.

And you should learn a little more about English before criticizing others.

But you sure got me on saying Debby instead of Debbie. Never mind that you ignored my comment about arbitrary use of analogies, you got the important stuff right!

Little Al on December 27, 2012 at 12:50 am

And one more question for you, fool. You may be to stupid to realize that there are many people in our society with speech impediments, and many with accents stemming from the fact that they came here from other countries (I am only referring to those here legally — I am not sympathetic to illegals). Would they be disqualified if they mispronounced one letter on a program like Wheel of Fortune, if there was no doubt of the expression they were enunciating? I think anyone with an IQ over 75 would know the answer to this. Do you qualify?

Little Al on December 27, 2012 at 1:01 am

You think this is the first time someone with a southern accent appeared on wheel of fortune? Like everything else in life your view on this is completely twisted! This isn’t a racist anti white conspiracy created by the grand ayatollah of wheel of fortune, you need to look at life through a more optimistic lens than the one you’re wearing. Wheel of fortune is a game show just like football is a sport and both have rules. The incomplete pass is no different than the incomplete sentence, it’s part of the rules and you need to play by them!

I called you big gay al because this entire Wheel of fortune fiasco reminded me of a great SP episode http://youtu.be/O2Yr9fM-qn8 and just found it ironic that your handle on here was “Little Al” referring to big gay al from the show… I have no prejudice against any gays, lesbians, transgendered, straight, bisexual or even asexual folks! I think it’s great that we can all live openly together in this great land of ours. Maybe you are right that I might have a small prejudice against overweight members within our military and I apologize to anyone that may take offense from that, again I’m sorry.

I never tried turn this into a 2pac vs Biggy thing (I wanna be 2pac, west side represent)

I will say, however, if you can find instances on wheel of fortune where contestants mispronounced words and were still awarded the cash then this might be watergate, but for now I’ll take it for what it is.

Kershaw on December 27, 2012 at 2:19 am

I ain’t shocked. I can smell Liberalism even before the stench of the down-draft hits.

EXACTLY RIGHT, . . . and if they judged Obama’s curious pronunciations—dropped consonants AND vowels, truncated syllables, and strange sounding pauses and re-dos, he’d be disqualified EVERY SINGLE DAY, . . . and maybe even, in jail t’boot, . . . but then, no doubt, he knows that, the USA presidency is no ordinary game show, . . . or does he? Is it?

I think that Wheel Of Fortune should have been cancelled a long time ago.

Not a shocker, P’Shaw. You play both sides of the fence here but many are on to your badly played game.

I heard this before Christmas on a talk-show I podcast and couldn’t believe it.

The host even pointed out that Sajak was confused and you can tell he’s a little out of sorts after he tells her but has to move on.

I still can’t understand why they would cheat this contestant out of what she rightfully won?

This is not right. I wonder if this is how they always treat peeps who drop their Gs or Rs. Bostonians must ALWAYS lose once they shout out the puzzle.

Skunky on December 26, 2012 at 7:33 pm

Apropos “gay,” I’ll quote John Gay (with a liberty or two): “Our P’shaw really is a sad slut.”

Gay baiting leftists: gotta love ’em.

skzion on December 27, 2012 at 9:52 am

That the Low-Info Leftist like P’Shaw would go after Little Al (one of the most intelligent and articulate regulars on this blog) shows what a know-nothing dummy P’Shaw is. Go sell crazy somewhere else, P’Shaw. We’ve had our fill of your arrogant ignorance.

Don’t forget P’shaw praised Obama-Putin’s stimulus (and didn’t know that a 3rd one was in the works because the FIRST Porkulus was so successful). P’Shaw failed to pay attention that Porkulus’ are Democrat slush-funds, actually. P’Shaw took umbrage at my “Obama-Putin” nickname (and has no clue about ANYTHING about Vladimir Putin) and doesn’t understand RULE ONE when it comes to Islam (but P’Shaw loves to come here and NOT read the archives yet say we should be nicer to the Mooooslims than they are to us). But P’Shaw is great! Just ask her! (FIGJAM!)

P’Shaw also failed to even know what caused the housing bubble and what Clinton’s Community Re-Investment Act was.

So who is gonna listen to ANOTHER Leftist, gay bigot in lieu of this blog’s favourite Little Al?

And why are Leftist’s so bigoted to gays when their intelligence is exposed by an intelligent Conservative?

Skunky on December 27, 2012 at 10:06 am

What part of big gay al being a cartoon character did you not get? Gays dese

As for QE1, 2 and perhaps even a 3rd one that might be in the way, have you looked at the impact they have had in our markets? The Dow and the S&P have almost fully recovered in 4 years so I’m not complaining.

Obama-Putin images no sense what so ever. He was voted into office by all of us (even if you didn’t vote for him) and he represents all of us as our president. The way the GOP is heading, we may never see a republican president ever again!

I do a lot of traveling around the world for business, and in the last 5 years I can actually tell people that I’m an American without the major hostility I used to get when Dubya was pres. I’ll never forget that cab driver that threw me out of his car just for being American back in 2005, to him I was “American pig” lol!!

Again I didn’t go after “Little Al”, my point is that this entire topic is comedic and ridiculous, but you turn everything into UFC!

When you think of garbage, think of Akeem.

Hey Pea-Brained P’Shaw….In my post I did NOT mention QE 1 or 2 or 3…that is Quantitative Easing NOT Stimulus (Porkulus). It shows what a dummy you are.

“As for QE1, 2 and perhaps even a 3rd one that might be in (SIC) the way, have you looked at the impact they have had in our markets? The Dow and the S&P have almost fully recovered in 4 years so I’m not complaining.”

In my post back on a different thread I DID point out to you that QE 2 was NOT a cruise ship which you seemed NOT to know.

You’re so right Skzion. I have to read a lot of P’Shaw’s mistake-ladden posts and let’s face it, *she is really wicked dumb.

I think I get annoyed because I hate frauds…and she (like a few others) came here trying to pretend they were NOT Liberal when they clearly were. I mean, they did try to hide it but they make mistakes and if you’re like me and detest them, it’s hard NOT to see thru’ them.

And I just think the hubris of the know-nothings *thinking* they know more than DS on Islamic Jihad (and politics) really tests my patience. I get offended by the narcissistic arrogance.

And you know I think from now on I will ignore the Liberal Low-Info idiot. And I mean just as I did you-know-who (who was the most boring bore EVER) and not even read P’Shaw’s posts.

(* I actually now think P’Shaw is a male but I liked calling him female because at first I DID think he was a girl because his arguments were so emotional. But since I figured out by deductive reasoning that he’s just an effeminate Liberal (non-gay) which makes him beneath contempt. And if I hadn’t by then, his lame anti-gay swipe would have proved to me that only a fake gay-lover would would be so homophobic. As Liberal frauds are wont to do.)

Skunky on December 27, 2012 at 5:11 pm

Skunky, something just occurred to me: what if P’Shaw’s brain has been eaten by a zombie? Perhaps we should be more kind. But then the zombie must have starved, so I withdraw the suggestion.

One more reason not to watch that show or buy products from the sponsors.

Pat: Would you like to be a vowel?

Contestant: Yes, Pat, I would. I would like to buy a seven.

Pat: Seven is not a vowel maam.

Contestant: Okay, how about banana?

Pat: No, a fruit is not a vowel.

Contestant: But fruit helps you move your vowels.

Pat: Vowel, maam, not bowel.

Contestant: Okay, I’ll buy a Volvo.

Pat: Please leave the stage maam.

HA! What’s even funnier is the fact that the English announcer on ABC News didn’t pronounce (or “articulate” or “enunciate”) a single “R” during his piece …! Would he have been similarly disqualified for mispronunciation on Wheel of Fortune? I doubt it. On the other hand, if you really want to know the origin of “Ebonics,” Dr. Thomas Sowell has authored a couple of very insightful (and perhaps “inciteful”) essays about Ebonics as a traditional English dialect that was transmitted from poor, isolated Southern whites to poor, isolated Southern blacks, long after having been brought to the New World by Borderland Brits. Oh, how Jesse and Al hate that Marine Veteran from Harlem …

Archie Angel on December 27, 2012 at 12:11 am

    Archie Angel,

Yes I agree with you about the Thomas Sowell hatred by dopes like the Justass Brothas. Both Jessie(babymama)Jackson and Weird Al Sharpton aren’t fit to tie the man’s shoes. Whenever Dr. Sowell is on TV (all to rare in my humble opinion) he exludeds intelligence and honesty. Something the two other race baiting idiots lack. It boggles my mind that my fellow Blacks put those two “Reverends” in high regard but call Dr Sowell a porch monkey or worse.

    Ken b on December 27, 2012 at 12:38 pm

I doubt that the show hates Southerners. If you watched today’s show, Pat actually tried to help the contestant from Charleston by reminding him that he could use his wildcard to pick another letter with his current spin of $3500. This guy chose to solve the puzzle even though he knew there were 2 t’s left on the board…that would have been an extra $7000! Pretty stupid decision as far as I’m concerned. Also, the other southerner solved a puzzle for $1550 when there were 3 l’s, 4 g’s, 4 n’d, still left to pick! Ugh! Just dumb!

Stop blowing things way out of proportion and you shouldn’t label me a “liberal” or Obama supporter cause I ain’t no democrat, sure ain’t no republican either, I only stand for one party and that is freedom!! Cause I am a patriot and I love my country.

All I know is that most of our equity and most people’s net worth was half of what it is now 5 years ago! Whether its QE1 ,2 or anything else that has been done to stimulate our markets it has been working! I understand that if we want to keep that up we’re gonna have to cut some spending and increase taxes because freedom isn’t free, it costs good folks like you and me, and if we don’t all chip in we’ll never pay that bill! I’d rather pay 20% more on taxes than take a 50% haircut on my overall net worth! If it wasn’t for bailouts we’d probably be doomed gangnam style.

You need to mellow out and get a sense of humor because laughter is the medicine of the soul and this entire WOF fiasco is very humorous! La vie est belle, especially from where we are! Sure there are those that are less fortunate and it’s up to us who have been blessed with more to help them without passing judgement first!!

……. If we don’t chip in that buck-o-five who will?

Totally robbed. Point blank. Yeah, if it were a justice brother episode, Jesse would basically get gifted everything due to his army of justice activists. Al would get angry, and some local talent in that area would claim the thumb activated answer button was tampered with to favor Jesse.

It’s not the fact that she was ‘penalized’ for speaking in the vernacular that bothers me; it’s that British twit on ABC doing what the liberal mainstream media does best, skewing the truth to advance their agenda against anybody/anything conservative or value-based. No doubt that Sajak’s lineage had an influence to how the story was first broadcast.

Jim on December 27, 2012 at 1:15 am

Wow, talk about splitting short-curlies. Sajak runs that show like a pro, he keeps the game moving unlike these new game shows where they take 10 minute breaks talking to the contestants and their struggles leading up to their appearance on the show. He was obviously taken aback by the decision.

While we’re on the subject, I’m so glad I’m not a yankee so I don’t have to sound like a total wuss/prick when I say words like “syrup” “pecan” or “crayon.” And I never have to use the phrase “you guys.” People up north think they are so sophisticated, but take a look at those Jersey Shore idiots – just rednecks with a different accent.

Hopewell on December 27, 2012 at 1:49 am

Wheel of Fortune reminds me of the quiz show scandal of the 1950s, like the game “Twenty-One.” This was a case of flagrant bias to give the money to a contestant who the judge like better and they feel will better promote the “values” of the show. The “vernacular” was merely the excuse. The woman ALREADY correctly identified the “g” in the word “swimming,” so the prononciation of the word “swimmin” is not a point for “academic” dispute.

I agreed with Debbie’s overall concusions. And I guarantee you that if the contestant had been black and had said “swimmin” instead of “swimming,” the show’s judges wouldn’t have dared to give the money to another contestant, who obviously heard the correct answer already. But a woman in a military uniform? No, that does not command any respect from the judges. Just the opposite.

If Merv Griffin were alive today (and he was the original creator of the show), he would not have let this happen under his watch. And even something like this did somehow happen, he would have, at a minimum, invited the woman back again for another shot at a prize.

Ralph Adamo on December 27, 2012 at 2:16 am

I agree, Ralph: this never would’ve happened if Merv Griffin were alive today. Case in point: 15 if not 20 or 25 years ago, a contestant from New York City–complete with Brooklyn accent–correctly solved this puzzle: “You could have knocked me ovuh with(wit?)a feathuh (fedduh?) (“You could have knocked me over with a feather”). The only difference was the answer, “Noo Yawk” accent and all, wasn’t disqalified.

David on December 27, 2012 at 10:26 pm

I think Durette should sue. I’m sure she can prove that the M.C.s on “Wheel of Fortune” or any popular, long-running quiz show, have accepted, over the years, hundreds, if not thousands, of weird pronunciations.

Miranda Rose Smith on December 27, 2012 at 3:12 am

It has, Miranda. I made the following point in a couple of comments on this, but a decade-and-a-half to a quarter of a century ago, a contestant from New York City, who spoke with that city’s accent (commonly called a Brooklyn accent), correctly solved the puzzle–“You could have knocked me over with a feather” (pronouncing it “You could have knocked me ovuh with [wit?] a fethuh [fedduh?]). You know what? The judge(s) *DIDN’T EVEN* **DISQUALIFY the answer!

David on December 27, 2012 at 11:06 pm

Oops, I meant to say, “They have, Miranda.”

David on December 27, 2012 at 11:08 pm

What a bunch of sh*t. Oh, well, TV blows roadkill and is basically for retards. This is just further evidence of same.

Pray Hard on December 27, 2012 at 9:26 am

Wheel Of Fortune is for idiots.

    williamduke315 on January 12, 2014 at 11:46 pm

And, they do this kind of b*llsh*t just to piss us off and get attention to get us involved in their pathology. It’s called “creative” faux controversy. They’re just like misbehaving kids who do anything for attention, negative or positive.

Pray Hard on December 27, 2012 at 9:30 am

There are so many dialects in the U.S. When we travel, people often ask if we’re from Michigan because we apparently have a strong ‘Michigan accent.’ We slur certain words or letters together, leave out sounds, and pronounce vowels differently.

I think Pray Hard may be right on this one. Unless the show rules say that regardless of a contestant’s accent he or she must pronounce every letter according to standard English.

lexi on December 27, 2012 at 11:20 am

One wonders what the retards at WofF and the All Barack Channel are doing. First the producers mucked it up and robbed this woman of her rightful winnings. Then the putzes from ABC tried to blame the whole thing on Sajak. Now those of us who’ve paid attention to the “news” media know that those clowns make up things all of the time instead of reporting it but what is WofFs excuse. I realize that in this great country of ours we have people who have different dialects. Even our chowderheaded president drops his g’s when he speaks. Especially when the idiot goes off ‘prompter. Wheel of Fortune should do a do over for Durette. You just know that if she was a minority, nonmilitary woman on welfare with five kids and four babydaddies those moronic judges would’ve have raised such a stink. Heck they all would’ve come to give her a hug when she won Vanna included(is it me or does she look like she could use a couple of Baconators). If they didn’t you just know that the dunderheads Jackson and Sharpton would come down on them like a racist ton of bricks.

Ken b on December 27, 2012 at 1:50 pm

“Wheel of Fortune” apparently isn’t run by sociolinguists. The dropping of the hard “g” at the end of a word (especially an active verb) is a trait found among all English-speaking peoples, beginning in England. Empirical studies have shown that this tendency increases as one goes down in social class. The same is true for the dropped “h” at the start of certain words; “have,” “him” and “hear,” for example, become “‘ave,” “‘im” and “‘ear.” Reading the comic strip “Andy Capp” when I was a kid became a lot more fun when I figures this out.

The producers of this TV show should lighten up, especially given that blacks, with their “Brer Rabbit” intonations, are a lot harder to figure out than any white cracker.

Seek on December 27, 2012 at 2:25 pm

…I’m guessing anti-military bias as the main reason.

General P. Malaise on December 27, 2012 at 2:44 pm

Hi Debbie – I wanted to offer you a different view. Renee wasn’t robbed. The judges’ call was correct. And I’m not just saying this as someone who watches the show a lot and thinks I know what I’m talking about. I was a contestant on Wheel of Fortune this season. I filmed July 26 and my episode aired on election day (you can find it on YouTube!).

The day of filming, you spend more than 3 hours with the contestant coordinators, being coached about how to answer puzzles, and practicing solving tricky puzzles. One of the examples that they give you is YOU AIN’T NOTHIN’ BUT A HOUND DOG. It is very clearly explained that if you were to solve this as YOU AIN’T NOTHING BUT A HOUND DOG, that you would be incorrect. They make you practice saying it correctly. So Renee had to be quite clear on the rules about pronouncing the words exactly as they are on the board.

Second point, is that most people just watch that one clip and get enraged. If you actually watch the whole episode, the toss up puzzle just moments before the SWANS puzzle was solved by Renee. The puzzle solution was ASPIRING ARTIST, and Renee clearly pronounces the full -ING sound at the end of ASPIRING, which I think is proof enough that she can certainly pronounce that sound.

I just wanted to make sure that as someone who obviously has a wide reader-base (first result on Google!) that you had all the information.

Kate on December 27, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Thank you Kate for clearing the obvious

    http://youtu.be/1ytCEuuW2_A

Kershaw on December 27, 2012 at 7:32 pm

Some people on other message boards have even said that Renee DID say “swimming” and not “swimmin'”.

David on December 27, 2012 at 10:54 pm

Well, Kate, in your ‘refutation’, you did manage to ignore the main point of Debbie’s post, which was the dishonesty of network brass blaming this episode on Sajak, instead of taking responsibility themselves.

And the trouble with anonymity is that we don’t know if you were a contestant or whether you are someone affiliated with the show. You never know much with the type of anecdotal ‘evidence’ you provide.

But, even assuming all your reportage to be true, there is still a problem. There is a difference between adding a letter that is not there, in a verse that has been familiar for half a century, and in slurring over a letter that you added yourself.

If the contestant in the Hound Dog example were to have added an apostrophe after ‘nothin”, and expressly acknowledged that there is no ‘g’ following the apostrophe, and had then been disqualified as in your example, it would indeed appear to be yet another example of discrimination. Two wrongs don’t make a right. And you ignore the many contributions to this discussion about even our President and Secretary of State dropping their ‘g”s when it suits them (much less Debbie’s discussion about the near certainty that black contestants would not be penalized for dropping their ‘g”s.)

My guess is that you’re associated with the show. We’ve never heard from you before, but all of a sudden, this well-informed person, who happened to watch the entire episode, happened to Google, and happened to be a contestant.

Why am I so suspicious? Please reread the post. A central point is about how the media lies and makes things up. If you are associated with the show, are you exempt from this charge?

Little Al on December 28, 2012 at 6:38 am

And then, wonder of coincidences. Kate’s prep miraculously included almost the same issue that we are discussing in this post. Of all the many preparations to take place, somehow the issue of dropping g’s found its way in. Come on now.

Little Al on December 28, 2012 at 2:15 pm

I’m from a suburb of New York City. Had Renee been from New York City itself and spoken with a Brooklyn accent, this would’ve been on the front page of every one of the New York newspapers–including the New York Times! Same with the Boston newspaper(s?) had she been from there and had she spoken with a “pahk-the-cah-in-Hahvahd-Yahd” Boston accent. The only other reason this made news is twofold: it was during Christmas week and the puzzle in question was a line from a Christmas song.

David on December 27, 2012 at 10:35 pm

I meant, I *live in* the *New Jersey* suburbs of New York City (most of which don’t speak in anything remotely close to a Brooklyn accent). I AM originally from Jersey City, NJ (which, owing to its location literally across the Hudson River from New York City, HAS historically spoken in a Brooklyn accent). But my immediately previous comment is right: it would’ve been front page news in the New York papers had Renee been from NYC (or Hudson County, NJ [where Jersey City is located], for that matter).

David on December 27, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Back in the eighties or nineties, a contestant from New York City who spoke with a Brooklyn accent correctly solved this puzzle in that accent: “You could have knocked me ovuh with (wit?) a fethuh (fedduh?)(“You could have knocked me over with a feather”).” The only sound effect that followed was the music that played whenever a contestant correctly solved a puzzle.

David on December 27, 2012 at 10:51 pm

Thank you Last Word! I wasn’t trying to antagonize anyone or start a hip hop war in the comment section of a blog page! I don’t see why we can’t just come together as Americans and maybe even take it a step back and come together as humans and just let it be! Everyone is entitled to a personal opinion whether they be a liberal, a conservative or neither and that doesn’t make either of them a “retard”. I just tried putting a lighter twist on this topic and put a couple of smiles on some faces! Obama is also not a retard and neither are any of our senators or house reps! He’s also not a communist nor is he gay or Muslim, and even if he was it shouldn’t matter! I was just pointing out the obvious, we live in the greatest country in the world and there’s nothing we can’t overcome together! People are entitled to their own opinions, but our common goal is preserving our freedom to chose who, what, where and how to do things as long as we’re not causing anyone else any harm! Live free or die.

Kershaw on December 27, 2012 at 11:32 pm

Are you absolutely 100% “certain” that Barrack Hussein Obama is not a Muslim, Kershaw? I ask this knowing that every time a Westerner publicly suggests that he is, the media jump all over him and start accusing the individual of wearing a tinfoil hat. On the other hand, although there is extensive evidence demonstrating that a substantial number of MUSLIMS believe Mr. Obama is one of their own, the media remain strangely silent about this, and render none of the usual condemnation. Shouldn’t the media elites also identify as insane conspiracy theorists the Muslims who consider Mr. Obama one of their own? I’m not saying he is or isn’t a Muslim, just highlighting the bizarre double standard exercised by the self-righteous media pundits when addressing the categorical denial you just issued. That being said, your posts reveal you as a pathetic propagandist who has no interest in community spirit, Liberty, or any other Western values that you claim to support.

Archie Angel on December 27, 2012 at 11:53 pm

Archie Angel, why would you ask P’Shaw a question her pea-brain does not want to cogitate on? Her conclusion is on pure emotion and SANS facts.

I’ve given up. P’Shaw is just an annoying gnat that knows less than I have forgotten and just comes here to act like the smartest man in the room while *ONLY* knowing Liberal talking points. She claims my Obama-Putin name is a misnomer yet knows NOTHING about Vladimir Putin.

I will not read her posts anymore because it’s just Liberal masterbatory junk. If someone else wants to tear her silly arguments apart I will enjoy that but I will not waste my time reading delusional crap anymore. I have too much info to take in so I ACTUALLY know what I am talking about.

But I see today these Liberals are tolerated when their weak arguments should be easily broken. Maybe I’ll act with such hubris and crap on about sh** I have no clue on and be able to stand on two feet like dopey P’Shaw can. And racist pigs like Donya Berry.

Skunky on December 28, 2012 at 10:00 am

Skunky-Assad , I’m as much of a liberal as you are an Islamic jihadist pig! Your anti-American rhetoric is sickening and your twisted soul is filled with nothing but hate which is why your view of America is so miserable! We live in the greatest country on earth and lead a life that I wouldn’t trade for anything! All you do is spew hate mongering propaganda and directly attack people’s liberties and freedoms to express themselves in a free and open forum! You don’t even have the willingness to explore what an open mind can offer, but would rather use insults to argue any pint of view that is different than your own! You claim to have forgotten more than I know, but the one thing you evidently lack is a rational common sense! This entire article was a joke from the get go and any rational person could see that! You’re so involved in being conservative and it’s great that you have a source of passion, but you somehow find a way to translate your passion into hate and choose to negatively label those that don’t agree with you. I have no issues if people want to label themselves, but we shouldn’t be passing any judgement and labeling others. This polarization is something that should be addressed because if we are divided then we make ourselves vulnerable! Our strength is our unity as families, as friends, as neighbors, as communities and most importantly as Americans! No prejudice or labels on anyone whether they be a man, a woman, a transvestite, black, white, brown, yellow, red, Jewish, Catholic, Mormon, Muslim, agnostic, atheist, Hindu, Buddhist, gay, lesbian, bisexual, smart, stupid, handicapped, handicapable, rich, poor, liberal, conservative, fat, skinny, good looking, ugly, Latino , creole, Ubuntu or native!

Little Al on December 28, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Hi Little Al –

Please calm down with the conspiracy theory. I found Debbie’s blog for the first time because it was the first google result when I was actually looking for something about the Wheel episode from December 26. What proof do you want that I was a contestant? Not that I feel the need to justify myself to you, as my point was to Debbie and not anyone else. Point being, that despite how things are commonly said, or the way the president talks, or someone blaming it on Pat or anyone else, I was addressing the statement that “Renee was robbed.” The Hound Dog example was just one – there are plenty of examples of adding letters or taking away letters (you can’t remove the S from a word that is plural, for example). I saw the whole episode because I watch the show regularly, as do millions of other people.

Renee knew the rules – no adding letters, no taking away letters, or you would be buzzed out. Unfortunate that she forgot that for a moment.

Kate on December 28, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Sorry, I don’t believe you. Your writing is a little too smooth, your grammar a little too good, your memory a little too exact. I still think you are a flak connected with the show.

And strange that ‘Renee’ was astute enough for every guess of hers to be right, but not astute enough to remember this recently imparted rule.

Little Al on December 28, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Are u really gonna question this woman’s integrity? Have you or anyone else done any research in an attempt to find any evidence that past contestants on that show have been awarded the prize when not properly completing a sentence?

If you look at the video you can clearly see that even Renee herself knew she had dropped the ball there and had that “my bad” look on her face!

The “people who annoy you” clip is still better

CeeDee on December 28, 2012 at 11:55 pm

Come on now. Kate is an anonymous person on this blog. I could pick a day of the show at random and use the pen name of some contestant. And who are you CeeDee? Like ‘Kate’, you have never been seen on this blog before.

Why don’t you just acknowledge your prejudice against Southerners, the Military and those who are overweight the way you are always trying to get us to ‘admit’ we are racists, sexists, bigots, homophobes, etc.?

Little Al on December 29, 2012 at 8:40 am

Or else ‘Kate’ could have been a phony contestant. Remember RA’s post earlier in this discussion comparing Wheel of Fortune with the phony quiz shows of the 50s? With overall ethics much lower today than in the 50s would anyone be surprised?

Little Al on December 29, 2012 at 8:45 am

I hope I don’t have to sneeze again soon.

Little Al on December 29, 2012 at 8:46 am

Why does everything have to be about being prejudice, racism or bigotry? This is an issue of common sense! You can keep going on through life telling yourself that wheel of fortune is prejudice along with 9/11 being an inside job, FEMA building death camps, global climate change to be a myth along with any other conspiracy theory you might believe is real. To each their own I guess. It’s too bad cause I thought the “bar” was much higher around here.

Great job! THAT’s how you do it! We need more of you on here and less of the brainless trolls.

skunky on December 29, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Not to beat a dead horse (while I sneeze), but one more interesting thing about Kate’s participate in Wheel of Fortune.

Not every show is readily accessed on Youtube. One interesting thing about the Nov. 6 date where Kate was a ‘contestant’ was that it was election night, and consequently the show had a reduced viewership on that date. This seems to have been a key reason the show was on Youtube for that date.

Makes it easy for Kate, doesn’t it? A little watched show, and coincidentally one of the few shown on Youtube the night she was a ‘contestant’. Couldn’t have been better if it had been orchestrated (which quite likely it was. Maybe if Kate really was on the show, and is being truthful about the prep (two big ifs), participation like this is specially staged for nights with sparse viewership, or shows where there is an excuse to put them on Youtube in case of future issues.

Little Al on December 29, 2012 at 10:18 pm

I am absolutely certain that Archie Angel is very desperate for Obama to be a Muslim for some reason. Why he is so prejudiced against muslims is anyone’s guess, but probably something to do with being deathly afraid of brown people.
