Which Speech is More Deadly – Australian DJs’ Prank or Daily Muslim Hate Speech? Suicide is Selfish

By Debbie Schlussel

Which speech is more deadly: the radio prank of two Australian disc jockeys or the daily implorations of violence and hate against Jews and Christians and other non-Muslims in Islamic schools, mosques, the koran, the hadiths, books, sermons, and websites? Yet, which of these is being heavily condemned all over the world, while the other gets nary a peep?

Australian DJs Mel Greig’s and Michael Christian’s Innocent Prank is Being Blamed for One Woman, Jacintha Saldanha’s Suicide . . .

But Millions of Murders, Tortures, and Rapes Are Inspired by Islam? . . .

islamiccrescent.jpg

I’m tired of the criticism of the Australian DJs who made the prank phone call on the air that is now being blamed for the suicide on Friday of a nurse at a British hospital. A New York Times editorial (you’ll never see a NYTimes condemnation of Islamic exhortations to violence) and competing prankster DJs are among the avalanche of pilers-on and critics of the DJs because of a tragic result that could not possibly be foreseen by anyone.

They are not the ones who went too far. It’s the woman who committed suicide who went too far.

As I’ve said before on this site, suicide is one of the most selfish acts a person can commit. It’s a final irreversible act that leaves loved ones traumatized, guilt-ridden, and blaming themselves forever. That a mother of two would leave her young children motherless and make her husband a widower is stark evidence that there was something seriously wrong with her, NOT an indictment of what was–as pranks go–very mild and harmless.

Radio hosts Mel Greig and Michael Christian of 2Day FM have now lost everything–their radio show (at a station whose management regularly encouraged much worse radio pranks), their reputations, and so on. All because they called a hospital with horrible security and privacy mechanisms, easily managed to get connected to Princess Kate’s hospital quarters, and asked a nurse how Princess Kate was doing after she was rushed to the hospital over morning sickness. That the princess weighs less than 100 pounds and is 5’10”–and that most other pregnant women aren’t so anorexic, nor do they need to be rushed to the hospital for morning sickness–is the subject for another blogpost. But the prank wasn’t mean-spirited and a suicide couldn’t possibly have been predicted . . . by the DJs or anyone else. Even Prince Charles was joking about the prank and saying he’s not a “radio station,” prior to the suicide.

And I find this interesting: that there’s a worldwide condemnation of the speech by the DJs that couldn’t have possibly been predicted to result in death, whereas there’s never a condemnation of Muslim speech in mosques, Muslim schools, and Islamic books every second of the day, all of which leads to murder of innocents. That’s the speech we should be concerned with. That’s the fatal speech with far more victims on a regular basis than one unstable woman who didn’t respond well to a radio prank. I get attacked on a regular basis by Muslims, who threaten my life and otherwise insult me. If I committed suicide, do you think anyone would condemn any of them or they’d lose their jobs? Think again. And the two DJs didn’t threaten anyone’s life or religion and ethnicity, as Muslims regularly do with me and other targets of their threats and violence. The idea that these DJs could go to jail for their prank, while Muslims who preach hate and violence never do experience punishment, is absurd.

Something was not all there about Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who killed herself. All she did was refer the call to Princess Kate’s room. If anything, the nurse who spoke and gave out information was really the one who violated patient privacy. And all of the stories note that the hospital was very supportive of Saldanha and neither criticized her nor disciplined her. In fact, at the time of her death, no one even knew her name, so it’s unlikely she was the subject of much ridicule beyond the confines of the workplace. Could workplace ridicule during just a few days have been so bad that this woman had to take her own life and leave her family empty and barren? Doubtful.

Perhaps Saldanha’s Indian background had something to do with it–that she came from poor, humble beginnings, and wasn’t (as no average healthcare worker would be) used to being involved in a worldwide news story involving a radio prank. Maybe it’s considered honorable there to do this, as one might commit hara-kiri in Japan. I don’t know. But it’s certainly not the DJs’ fault.

What the two DJs did wasn’t on the order of shaming anyone. They didn’t post an embarrassing video or phone call of someone on the net. They didn’t expose a cheating wife or husband to the public. They didn’t do even a gazillionth of a percent of what goes on in our current media culture, much of which would be more reliably suicide-inducing than this. What they did didn’t expose anyone to anything on the level of the strife that normally causes people to commit suicide. Yes, there is a line that shouldn’t be crossed. And these two DJs didn’t even come close to that line.

So, I’m tired of hearing the apologies–as badly as the DJs rightly feel–and the harsh verdicts against people for merely exercising their free speech rights in the West in what was a quite banal and benign way. That wasn’t the cause of the suicide.

Something seriously wrong with Jacintha Saldanha was the reason she took her own life. End of story.

Just remember, as you listen to the endless condemnations of the Australian DJs, that those condemning them and blaming them for the suicide of a singular selfish, mentally unstable woman don’t give a crap about the millions of people around the world that Islamic speech sentenced to murder on a regular basis.

Not that this is new, but the speech police have a very selective sense of which speech is tolerable and which exceeds the bounds of decency.

I am real suspicious about this “suicide”. The first thought that came to mind when I heard about this, was that whoever “handles” the Royals bumped off that nurse to make an example, send a message.

RT on December 11, 2012 at 1:37 pm

RT, this is exactly what I was thinking. I tend to believe Mohammed Al Fayad’s contention that the Palace had Princess Diana and Dodi knocked off. This is how monarchs behave historically, when someone in the “inner circle” becomes a “problem” or someone threatens their carefully crafted image. Hyperemesis gravida is not simple “morning sickness.” DUCHESS Kate is a very sick woman right now and both her and her baby’s lives are at risk. Makes me wonder tho if that’s all there is too her condition.
They are probably seeing this as Saldanha not being the end of the situation but the start of it and the easiest place to send a message from. IOW, had she not passed the call on, this wouldn’t have happened, even tho no harm was intended.

Thank you Debbie. I was waiting for you to speak out on this since I knew you would provide a view contrary to the media narrative. I am so sick of the braying mob scapegoating these two DJ’s for the suicide of this obviously unstable woman. Many even want them to be charged criminally. Insane. There are no grounds for this.

Laura on December 11, 2012 at 1:39 pm

The DJs said that they didn’t even expect to get through. If you hear the tape of their accents when calling, it’s laughable that anyone would actually believe it was the Queen calling. Like the DJs said, those were the worst imitations of an English accent ever heard. Also, the result of the call wasn’t tragic in any way. I don’t understand why it would lead to this woman committing suicide.

David on December 11, 2012 at 1:49 pm

First, I loved the prank. It was hilarious! It was so poorly executed yet successful. I laughed all day. I guess the British lost their sense of humor.

Second, the suicide victim was obviously disturbed because no way would this be sufficient to justify suicide. What? You hurt the monarch’s feelings? What?

Third, if it is so serious, then use it constructively to build safeguards to prevent social engineering penetration.

Fourth, I really loved the guy barking in the background and the Queen ordering him to walk the dog.

It was great fun!

Now, with muzzies, f–k them or they will f–k you first. They are serious deadly business… give them no room.

It was a bizarre reaction to such a minor thing. I suspect that that nurse had some other big problems. Also, the police in Australia actually investigating this prank call. Someone must have alot of time to spare. Finally, infinitely worse phone calls are made everyday others without incident.

Also. the station tha had the program is now giving the dead nurse’s family $500,000:

http://headlinepong.com/blog/royal-nurse-radio-gives-aus500000-to-family-fund/

This prank has gotten rather profitable for the family involved. What is more relevant are what factors actually led the suicide? Is that station handing money over the people who actually pushed the nurse over the edge?

Worry01 on December 11, 2012 at 2:05 pm

Oh, yes. This morning I heard the station would be donating commercial proceeds to this Indian family.

Ridiculous! Wait and see if more thrown themselves on a pyre hoping for cash.

As goes, so goes... on December 11, 2012 at 2:12 pm

You are correct that suicide is a selfish act. Absent a mental condition that has a biochemical component – in which case the person who commits suicide has little or no control over the depression – there is no justification. No harm came from the prank except harm that was self inflicted.

One thing – Kate was not hospitalized simply for morning sickness. She was hospitalized for severe and continuing morning sickness that resulted in extreme dehydration. If the reports are accurate, her hospitalization was totally justified.

Debbie did no that the Duchess of Cambridge came in at under 100 lbs. at a height of 5’10. That does seem to be rather underweight. Assuming that the pregnancy was a planned one, her physician would have advised her about being underweight during her pregnancy.

    Worry01 on December 11, 2012 at 3:35 pm

Severe weight loss is a symptom of Hyperemesis gravida. She’s always been slender and 30 lbs. is not an unusual loss in this illness. She is very gravely ill. The pregnancy is at risk and so is her life. Hospitalization is necessary. It’s weird. I was just reading a novel by Peter James that had the main character suffering from this when the story broke. I never knew it was a distinct condition, having been blessed with a lack of even ordinary morning sickness.

Note to DS: HIndus do not have a prohibition on suicide but Saldanha is a Portuguese name. A lot of Portuguese Indians are Catholics. I don’t know if this family is or if they are Hindu but if they are Catholics, it would definitely be prohibited. I totally agree with you that there was a problem with her far beyond this or, as I said in my reply to RT, the palace is involved somehow.

Great analysis and article, Debbie.

DS_ROCKS! on December 11, 2012 at 3:38 pm

Debbie, I find it extremely suspicious that this Indian nurse would just go ahead and kill herself after a silly prank was made by the Australian DJs. Something just don’t add up after the fact. I think the nurse was deeply unhappy with herself, possibly she may be experiencing a delayed post-natal depression or had a history of mental illness that the public doesn’t know about yet?

I am very sad about this pile-on for the Aussies. It’s just rotten and I expected better from Australians (the ones piling on). I just heard the prank this am and it was so benign and silly…for them to be painted as bete noir’s is just awful. It reminds me of (in certain realms) of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and what happened to George Zimmerman.

It is really evil to demonize people who meant no harm and destroy their lives and livelihood the way people are doing. It shows me that people are completely lost when it comes to individual, independent thinking. That’s not just regretful but dangerous.

The prank was so harmless. And I like the Aussies giving it to the Royal Poms…they should rid themselves of that wasted legacy (but won’t). And it was so harmless and silly.

DS is correct. There was something so wrong with this woman and I want to know the fellow BRITS who possibly made her life unbearable at work. Those people may be more culpable IF indeed there is culpability to be had.

I feel for the Australians. Most are so fun-loving and don’t take themselves so seriously. And for this to happen over a stupid prank. It just makes me so sad for how people have devolved and how easily they’ll hop on a bandwagon just to spout an opinion.

And DS is so right about the Mooooslims. My goodness, if peeps wanna have something to be agro about, that issue is beyond ripe for the picking.

Skunky on December 11, 2012 at 5:46 pm

I just read this article in whole again. I am so grateful there is a place that cuts through the nonsense and says reasonable things during unreasonable times.

I know I won’t read that crappy NYT article. I skipped the Brit articles on this yesterday because it seemed so cruel and disturbing.

Australia has devolved more than I thought. So disappointing.

I appreciated As Goes Israel…posts. That’s the spirit I like as well. I hate to see an unjustified pile on. It’s very upsetting.

I had no idea that the Duchess was five ten! That is VERY shocking to me. I knew she was petite but I also thought she was short. Disturbing indeed!!

Skunky on December 11, 2012 at 5:59 pm

The mob mentality is very disturbing. This is what happened to George Zimmerman until the whole story eventually came out. I hope perhaps that the whole story about this nurse will come out and thus vindicate these Aussie DJ’s who are being treated like they are serial killers.

Laura on December 11, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Laure, you bring up a good point. There does seem to be a racial subtext involved here, which was more explicit in the Zimmerman case you cited. If some East Indian D.J. in Liverpool pulled the same stunt, it is highly unlikely that you would have seen the ruckus which now surrounds those two poor Australians. As a nurse, one would face far more intense and situations than a prank call. My concern is that by implicating some radio DJ’s in Australia, the real reasons behind this woman’s suicide will never be explored. The suicide angle is a neat way to cover a homicide, if that was what really occurred.

    Worry01 on December 12, 2012 at 10:05 am

Debbie, I saw and heard the prank call and compared to what this radio station had done in the past, this one was pretty tame. Unfortunately Debbie, our western culture has gotten the idea that suicide or people committing suicide should never be referred to as selfish or condemned. From observing recent trends, suicide will eventually become a “right” as food, health care, and abortion and other leftist notions.

I agree there was something wrong with this woman mentally to commit suicide over something like this. Was her work environment conducive in bring ridicule or bad performance for this flap? Was she brought up to not to disgrace the family “honor” over embarrasing moments? Or as you mentioned Debbie, was there post natal depression? Who knows?

However the media should be focusing on these kind of questions instead of this lynch mob mentality of stringing up these two DJs. In fact I only read in a possible AP (not sure about source) article that attacked the Australian radio station for doing these kind of prank calls in the past from other DJs which were a lot worse than what these two did. Seems thats where some of the focus should be and the other about the mental stability of the woman.

This though will not happen since, suicidal people are never questioned and the radio station has thrown these two DJs under the bus and trying to salvage their image with good PR.

Last thing Debbie that you are right that muslim hate speech/death threats are ignored or downplayed by the media but look at the world wide condemnation these two DJs received for their prank. Every day I see stupidity and delusional thinking gaining a foothold not just here in the US but in the western world.

Mario on December 11, 2012 at 6:42 pm

I’ve heard the tape. She is on the phone all of six seconds. This cannot be suicide because of six seconds. There is something else going on here. Abandoned her husband and children over a phone call?

Jack on December 11, 2012 at 6:58 pm

Deb,

You need to look at this from another angle. One thing very wealthy, famous and privileged people and families are becoming famous for in this day and age is the hiring of people under very unfair, inequitable and abusive arrangements. Often, a carrot and stick is employed – legal status, papers, etc.

My first reaction when I heard this is that an employee was under a great deal of pressure to achieve an opportunity under a questionable employment contract – saw their opportunity go up in smoke in an insta-flash – and committed suicide having no alternative.

We need to know more about the contract, background, legal status in relation to this person. As the reaction I see so far – especially against the DJs by the media has the word “deflection” written all over it.

Once we know the above – the story will be much different. I’m counting on the royal family, BBC and MI6 making certain that doesn’t happen though.

=8-)

That the princess weighs less than 100 pounds and is 5’10?–and that most other pregnant women aren’t so anorexic, nor do they need to be rushed to the hospital for morning sickness–is the subject for another blogpost.

I think that’s very worrisome. If she’s anorexic, then a man whose mother suffered from an eating disorder married a woman with an eating disorder. I was hoping that, with all the horror his parent’s marriage put him through, that poor boy had found happiness with a normal woman.

Severe weight loss is a symptom of Hyperemesis gravida.

I didn’t know that. What does it mean? That you just urinate and urinate and urinate?

Miranda Rose Smith on December 12, 2012 at 2:15 am

When you talk about the Quoran and the Hadith, I am -believe it or not – an AUTHORITY ON THE SUBJECT. These are all a bunch of junk that Moslems were lead to believe in without any examination of the statements. Actually the rule in Islam is that; “Every question is a doubt, Every doubt is a heresy, Every heresy is a misleading, Every misleading is in Hell.”

Yet Muhammad was a very possessive and extremely controlling man. He wanted to know every iota about the men who endorsed him as a prophet. He had his community impregnated with spies who reported to him rheir findings. HE NEVER TRUSTED THEM AND HE CONTROLLED THEM BY ESPIONAGE AND FEAR. Even the spies had others spying on them. This is why Islam is a despotic and enslaving cult. Muhammad the Sadducee Jew decided that he is a messenger of God just to rule over Kureish and the whole of Arabia and the whole World. His wonderful plan was to submit the people of a land and let them subjugate the land for him if they are really Moslems. He deceived the Jews of Yathreb by pretending to be a strict Jew. When they got tired of his money demands every other day they dumped him. So he became anti Jewish. He defined the Moslems as those who submitted to him out of fear not out of conviction. The other group he labelled as BELIEVERS because according to him they really believed in him.

Sensational post! Truly excellent. Well thought out. Well said. Brava!

louie louie on December 12, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Excellent post Debbie as always. You’re right something just doesn’t add up here. The New York Slimes editorial board and others would have you believe that Saldanha committed her selfish act because of this prank. I think that she did it because of other issues and time will hopefully bring those to light just like the Zimmerman case.

Now as to the DJs. Their careers are over and for what? Oh god they made fun of the Brits and the Monarchy. Quick call the cops. Seriously I’ve been to Britian and those people have no sense of humor just like the French. With all of their fellow Australians hoping on the condemn train these two will be lucky if they ever get another radio gig.

As for the Muslim death threat double standard. We all know that the dirtbags who do far worse to Debbie and others who call them out get away with murder. Even the US Justice Department fails to prosecute these maggots for death threats. You want to talk about an unstable lot. Look no further than the radical screwball followers of Muhammad.

Another glaring example of the MSM hubris, not content to just report the news but to wonder off into areas they have no knowledge of and fill the empty minds of their faithful with misinformation.
