Who Won Last Night’s Presidential Debate? Does it Make a Difference?

By Debbie Schlussel

I thought last night’s Presidential Debate was boring and a waste of time. These are 82 people who claim that just three weeks before the election, they still don’t know who they’re voting for, which means the questioners were either 82 of the dumbest people in America, or 82 of the biggest liars faking it to get in on asking a question to help their candidate and/or hurt the opposition. I believe it’s the latter, as I saw after the debate that the crowd seemed to swarm to President Obama and Mitt Romney was on his own, going up to Candy Crowley to thank her for her (very partisan) “moderation” of the debate. Would have loved to have seen a poll of the 82 dummies or liars after the debate.

I also found the debate annoying to watch. I could watch divorce court every single day on daytime TV, don’t wanna see it in this. Obama’s and Romney’s contentious interaction wasn’t fun to watch because there were no zingers or great one-liners, just fighting to a draw, in my view. I look to Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. They might constantly attack each other, but it’s fun to watch. This wasn’t. It was painful. “I know you are but what am I?” That’s what I thought I was listening to.

Romney’s tap-dancing on immigration was just as I said in the past: he’s completely flip-flopped from being tough on immigration in the Republican primaries to endorsing the same “pathway” allowing illegal aliens to stay here and not get deported. They are no differences between them on this very important issue, and when I pointed this out on Twitter (follow me on Twitter), some mindless, blind conservatives started attacking me and claiming I support Obama (which is total BS).

Crowley’s insertion of herself into the answers on the Benghazi Consulate terrorist attack was absurd, since she didn’t insert herself to correct Obama on any of this misstatements, lies, etc. On guns, I don’t think most Americans know what Fast and Furious is, so that was sort of a wasted answer on Romney’s part, though I’m pretty confident that the Second Amendment is the one issue where I’m pretty sure that Romney will actually stand tough (unlike what he did in Massachusetts, despite his “explanation” of that). I’m all for restricting the Second Amendment for bitter koran clingers, especially the ones who storm our embassies and/or murder our diplomats. But for the rest of us, hands off our guns.

One other thing: those bar stools were really dumb and very unpresidential. Whose cockamamie idea was that? This was a Presidential Debate, not a keg party.

What did you think? Do you think the debate will make any difference in the polls? I don’t.

Women who were watching the second presidential debate would have seen the face of an irritated scowling Obama. He was scary looking and frightened the bravest of the ladies. His trust was lost and a returning smile would not be enough to get him a kiss on the cheek.

I’ve managed to catch a fraction of the debate. While I’m not that impressed by the proceedings (Canadian election debates are a little more spirited by pitting candidates directly against each other), I was very amused by Rom-bama’s “Fast and Furious” statement. He should cut down on the Diesel if he wants to be the CinC.

My opinion. That’s all.

The Reverend Jacques on October 17, 2012 at 3:19 pm

Debbie, I didn’t watch the waste of time debate last night, I knew it’ll be a waste of time and it’ll be fixed. Think about it, Candy Crowley of CNN the moderator, hello, this woman is apart of the left wing cabal and works for the “Government-Media-Complex” something Michael Savage warned all of us many years ago.

I was too busy watching an NCAA Football game between Louisiana-Lafayette @ North Texas (North Texas won 30-23), that game was 100 times more exciting and entertaining than the so-called debate.

And some stupid liberals are in glee and claiming that Obama won, same reaction that some silly conservatives had a few weeks ago when Romney allegedly won the debate. Whoever won the debate overnight, I doubt it’ll change the country, because whoever wins the election a few weeks from now, it’ll more likely be more of the same policies that’s been going on for the last few decades!

“A nation is defined by its borders, language & culture!”

Sean R. on October 17, 2012 at 3:24 pm

Basically – “Yes, you did.” “No, I didn’t.” And vice versa. I know less than I did before the debate.

Bubba Lefkowitz on October 17, 2012 at 3:30 pm

I noticed the crowd swirl around Obama, as well.

The general impressions was that Romney handled himself fairly well in a setting where the deck was most definitely stacked against him. Did Obama’s advisers really tell him, a rather large black man, to assume an aggressive (almost menacing) posture. Doesn’t he risk scaring the white house wives out there in suburban Cleveland?

Adam on October 17, 2012 at 3:34 pm

It was at Hofstra University (my alma matter). It’s quite a liberal school.

Matthew on October 17, 2012 at 3:41 pm

In terms of swaying votes, and affecting the polls, Obama won strongly, with some help from his friends in the media.

First, there’s Candy Crow. Women say they want to be respected, but then they have names like ‘Candy’. She might as well be called Lolipop Crowley.

Of course she was unfair. Everyone knew that would happen when the moderators were selected. But there were other factors as well. The debates are held in liberal locations: Denver, Boca Raton, Long Island, etc. And that affects not only the questions, but the audience response — remember the murmur of approval when Obama said Romney’s pension was higher? Does anyone thing that would have been the audience reaction if the debate had been held in Wyoming?

And of course the candidates’ anticipation of audience reaction, which would be seen by tens of millions of people, affects their response. Romney, everything else being equal, is less likely to make a conservative response in front of a liberal, vocal audience than in an audience in Wyoming, for instance. And vice versa for Obama– liberal responses would be less likely if the debate were held in the middle of coal country for instance.

And the media learned from their mistake in the first debate, where they were honest and said Romney won. This time, Obama won because he was more ‘aggressive’. The reporting on substances was shallow and inaccurate, but that is what will affect votes.

All of that being said, Romney deserves credit for at least up till the last few minutes, not tolerating the rudeness that overwhelmed Ryan in the second debate. Obama’s interruptions were aggressive, and Romney’s were defensive. Similarly, his interruptions of Candy Crow were also defensive. He had no choice.

As far as substance, Romney was in a difficult position because he, himself is a liberal and flip-flopper par excellence. He didn’t have the guts to say that Planned Parenthood should be cut off from all Government funds. Obama & his handers knew that Romney would take conciliatory positions on women, and immigration, and took full advantage. But Romney made it easy for them, and in that sense, deserves what he got.

And he didn’t learn from Ryan’s mistakes. He could have communicated on Fast & Furious if he had said more on the issue, instead of trying to appease liberals.

And Obama looked like a grinning idiot much of the time — his demeanor was rude, not quite as bad as Biden’s, but pretty close. Romney should have called him on it.

He is a better debater, but could not overcome the organizational aspects supporting the Democrats, or the liberalism inherent in his candidacy.

So all in all, a frustrating debate to watch.

Little Al on October 17, 2012 at 3:46 pm

I’m not a fan of Mitt Happens – and the reason people are going to him has to do with our tough Obamaconomy.

While Obama didn’t create this mess he inherited from Bush, he didn’t do much about them either. And when things get this bad, people find a reason to vote against the incumbent.

It wasn’t Romney who brought down Obama; Obama did it all to himself.

NormanF on October 17, 2012 at 7:41 pm

And he lost an opportunity to really attack Iran and defend Israel strongly. But of course that tells us that what he will do if he is elected. He will continue to lose opportunities to attack Iran & defend Israel if he is elected.

Little Al on October 17, 2012 at 3:47 pm

The only way it will matter will be how much discussion there is about Crowly’s non-moderate moderation. I mean, chiming in to help the President? REALLY? If I were Mitt I would have said “hey Candy, give him a chance, he has to learn to debate on his own.” As for the “undecideds” that was total BS. Probably most people weren’t paying attention. I watched most of it last night and even I had a hard time sticking with it. You’re right about Mitt….he’ll probably try to be soft on immigration so it’ll be up to us writing our Congessional delegations to make sure we enforce our borders and deport people who overstay visas. You know, act like we’re a sovereign nation or something.

Sean M on October 17, 2012 at 4:02 pm

Why do they bother? Does anyone decide on the “results” of these debates? Do candidates every really answer the questions? Are people basically too stupid to see the results of Obama’s 4 years? Why didn’t anyone question the video of Obama saying “if he doesn’t cut the budget deficit, he’d be a one term president”?
Are any Americans out there incapable of doing the arithmetic on unemployment and deficit? You’re right….total waste of time

Alan B on October 17, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Romney missed an opportunity to publicly call on Obama to lift executive privledge on fast and furious. When the question came he wasted too much time getting to it, and when he finally did he was cut off by the moderator.

John on October 17, 2012 at 4:12 pm

Hey Schlussel: “It’s the economy stupid”.

FrenchKiss on October 17, 2012 at 4:31 pm

My question is this: Where in hell did the debate organizers find the questioners? The cemetery? I’ve seen more life in the coma ward. Undecided? Check em’ for a pulse.

Larry Durham on October 17, 2012 at 4:34 pm

Romney missed MANY opportunities to demonstrate the Liar-in-Chief’s BS. But, he did show plenty of the Kenyan’s failures. Romney just needed to hold his ground, and not loose any credibility. He did.

Kandi Kowley clearly came to obama’s rescue and lied. Why the stupid Republican party keeps agreeing to these “moderators” is pathetic.

FrenchKiss on October 17, 2012 at 5:15 pm

Undecided voters?!?!?!?!?

Questioner: “What will you do to assure pay equality for women in the workplace?” Yeah, plant #1. Romney failed to debunk this stupid myth.

Questioner: “How are you any different from Bush?”. Yeah, plant #2. Romney answered it quite well.

FrenchKiss on October 17, 2012 at 5:19 pm

What I saw was 0bama trying to force more whoppers down Americans throats than Burger King. I haven’t seen that much BS come out of an orifice since being at a cattle farm. His lies were so blatant, it was disgusting. 0bama constantly pisses on us and swears its raining then immediately craps on us and says it’s a mudslide. To say we’re producing more oil, when he’s cut permitting or to tell the blatant horsepuckey about producing coal, when he’s caused so many coal powered plants to close. I was sickened. I had to watch the debate so I could see it for myself, without anyone’s spin. 0bama is a narcissist who would lie to G-d and expect him to believe it.

MarkSWFL on October 17, 2012 at 5:36 pm

Adam makes a good point about the potentially menacing Obama. It will be interesting to see what happens with this.

Little Al on October 17, 2012 at 5:50 pm

Couldn’t watch the liar in chief last time either. I didn’t even try to watch this one. BHO is just so much empty chair. It’s a shame this guy will go down in history as the worse, most corrupt in history. With a media as corrupt as he was, carrying his water every inch of the way. Even with the moderators all stacked against the GOP, The message was still out there. Not to mention the passing of the B.O. care bill on the night before Christmas Eve was the moment we all knew there was no depth this man would not go to.

Bibi’s run for re-election and the ratings on his
debates will put these two lightweights to shame.

Israel is the game changer for the US and themselves.
Bibi needs a war to get re-elected.

Commander Zero on October 17, 2012 at 6:17 pm

Before commenting, try understanding our system. Bibi ain’t running! Likud, of which he’s the head is running and if THEY get the most votes, they will either form a new government or more likely be asked to form a coalition. They have 27 mandated Knesset seats and Kadima has 28. IF Likud manages to get the majority of the votes, even if not enough to be the clear winner, Bibi would still be first on the party list but a coalition may insist he step away from being PM as a condition for joining. Barak has started his own party so we can hope he won’t even be in the government after this. Elections are set for Tuesday, January 15, 2013.
At this point, it’s anyone’s guess who will be PM. Israel Beiteinu (our home) Headed by Avigidor Lieberman may make a good showing but expect Kadima (formerly labor) to be a major presence. They’re politicians but I’ve been liking Lieberman. To sum up, we vote a PARTY ticket and the leadership of that party decides who will be in and who will be out and who gets which portfolio. There’s lots of back room bargaining and deal making.

So please everyone, DO NOT START WITH FEIGLIN. He is out of Likud and hasn’t formed his own party. He is not even eligible to participate at this point. He’s made his decision.

Italkit on October 18, 2012 at 2:16 am

@Adam: Can’t agree with you on that point.

The image of the “angry black man” not only doesn’t “frighten” white housewives anymore, it’s actually a selling point.

Our entire social dogma is centered around and based on white guilt for historical transgressions against “minorities” (even though whites are globally the only true minority and race faced with very possible extinction.)

No, Obama “won” the debate just like blacks can “win” socially and economically via affirmative action and other racial quotas and entitlements simply by showing up and not being put in prison, although even that requirement is often waived.

DS_ROCKS! on October 17, 2012 at 6:34 pm

I think the Republicans agree to degrading organizational aspects of the debates because they have really degenerated into little more than an alternative patronage organization. They’re happy getting a minority of political offices, lucrative lobbying and business opportunities when they’re finished holding office, and they don’t want to upset this.

They don’t want conservatives to get too numerous or involved in their party because it might upset the applecart.

Little Al on October 17, 2012 at 6:37 pm

Debbie,

Mitt Happens IS going to win – for reasons that we both know have nothing to do with him. People are just tired of Obama and they are not thrilled to have him around in the White House for another four years.

Its the economy, stupid and the liberal media and the Democrats are in denial.

That’s why Obama is going to lose an election he thought he had locked up only weeks ago.

And no – the last debate next week won’t change in the slightest the inevitable outcome.

NormanF on October 17, 2012 at 7:21 pm

My wife watched. I went upstairs and watched the ALCS because I can’t take one second of seeing, or hearing, His Majesty-Identity Thief in Chief-Supreme Potentate-Chief Blackfoot Barack ObaMao. I also can’t stand watching republicans be played for suckers by participating in a suicidal forum like this one.

I thought Michelle was the commandant of the “Obesity Gestapo”. How could a fat-ass like Crowley be allowed to moderate? Isn’t she a bad example for “the children”?

CornCoLeo on October 17, 2012 at 8:39 pm

When two fat liberal women “moderate” debates… back to back – whatever happened to thin and beautiful female journalists?

I guess they don’t hire them anymore for their looks and here you can’t judge them by their appearance.

Then again, there will be always be biased moderators. With liberals, its an equal opportunity vocation!

NormanF on October 17, 2012 at 8:56 pm

Hey Schlussel: “It’s the economy stupid”.

No, actually “It’s Islam, stupid.”

But we won’t know it until after thousands, or hundreds of thousands of us are mass-murdered by Muslims in various attacks throughout the West in the coming decades. Well, some of us know it now; but apparently not enough and not influential enough to make a difference.

Hesperado on October 17, 2012 at 10:21 pm

Hesperado, FK doesn’t view Islam as such a serious problem.

skzion on October 18, 2012 at 1:12 am

No, actually I do consider pisslam a threat to America.

However, the point is that the issue MOST AMERICANS WANT ADDRESSED is the economy.

FrenchKiss on October 18, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Excuse me people are not aliens and they are not illegals. People or human beings who do not have US citizenship are undocumented. Many people like you continue to perpetuate this dehumanization of humans like when America had African slaves and dehumanized them or like when the natives were referred to as savages in order to dehumanize them. This country was founded and continues to grow on slave labor.

Congrats. You’re a silly girl. All feeling and no brains. You’ll be safe when the Zombie Apocalypse hits.

And if you really want to deal in truth and not emotions you really ought to study Islamic slave trades. The USA has been out of the game for over 100 years but the Islamic slave trade still THRIVES…and started way before any other.

I listened and was on Twitter the whole time (and annoying Twitter shut me down for about 40 minutes of the debate time…who knew Twitter rationed tweets?).

I do like Twitter but there are so many lovey-dovey, rah-rah Romney lovers on there. Not because they are so taken by him but they have been taken over by the fight. I understand that but it is sad to see how they don’t question things and fall into Republican GOOD crap. These peeps also adore Darrell Issa and Lara Logan. Sad. Critical thinking has gone on walkabout for those sorts.

Romney does have my vote this time around but I will have to chop off my nose practically to do it. I hate the Liberals more than the “Rah-rah-sis-boom-bah” Romney lovers because they paint that chameleon as an extreme right-winger when he is anything but. Some are stupid who swallow it hook, line and sinker but most just wanna influence peddle dumb Liberals lemmings for their own power and delusions.

It’s good to see things have not changed in Liberal Land. Trickery, lies and counting on the lack of research on Liberals’ part seems to work like a charm still. I hate the buggers for lying and the dopes who swallow the lies gleefully.

Obama-Putin sickens me most of all. It’s like watching the world’s best sociopath charm the freedom out of the dopiest freaks in the universe. It’s offensive to me and I feel as if I am stuck in Bizarro World against my will.

Skunky on October 18, 2012 at 12:50 am

Debbie, these debates are a big improvement for Romney. Remember how in 1992, during the MA Senate debate, he got pummeled by Ted Kennedy? If he could win now against ‘Orator Obama’, that’s huge!

Infidel on October 18, 2012 at 1:45 am

I think the polacks are at it again. I have tried to post a reply to Commander Zero and it’s not showing but when I try again, I get “duplicate comment” message.

Italkit on October 18, 2012 at 2:25 am

Everyone takes note of Obama’s “aggressive” perfromance last night, and that may be true, but his posturing was lost on Mitt Romney.
18:18 minutes into the debate,Obama tried interrupting Romney during his two minute rebuttal,Romney all but told Obama to sit down and be quiet and Obama said,”Ok”.
He said,”You’ll get your chance in a minute,I’m still speaking”…Obama stammers,Romney points his finger at him and says.”That wasn’t a question,that was a statement”.

THAT,was a command and control moment baby.

ebayer on October 18, 2012 at 3:14 am

The polls and so called debates are to promote the status quo. They are irrelevant.

What the candidates are saying and doing is important, not how they are saying it.

Will Mitt as President be governed by the Constitution or not?

Vote to spare our great country, what is left of it, from the Marxist Obama.

Gun control is one of the policies on steroids that is coming if Obama is elected.

My question for Barry would be, “When the government comes for my guns what are they going to ask me?” they can’t have them. I have them so they cannot just take them away, without a fight.

Panhandle on October 18, 2012 at 1:17 pm

This debate just showed what a lying weasel that Odumbo is. With the MSM covering his butt he along with his thin skinned narcassism he can do this without any serious push back until now. Even though Mittens is a weak candidate who has many chinks(or etch-a-sketches) in his armor he has taken it to Odummer. This wasn’t like the town hall debate where McLame was trying to be a gentleman and pacing back and forth while Obowma was coughing up flem laced lies and platitudes. The part where Mittens took the gloves off and told the black “undecided” voter Michael Jones Onocchio’s record was priceless. Even though Candy the whale finally came out of the Otank and helped Obinks with his Benghazi mess that didn’t do any good. I call this debate a draw because of Oboinkus coming out awake but stll lying thru his large teeth and Mittens holding his own while also dealing the Rotten Candy. I also predict that the next debate on Monday will be the same. Let’s just hope that Bob Schieffer doesn’t act like mutts Crowley and Raddatz. Yeah right don’t hold your breath folks.

Ken b on October 20, 2012 at 6:07 pm

I forgot Debbie it was funny that you mentioned Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. I don’t know if you’re a cartoon junkie like I was growing up. If you were you will remember the Bugs Bunny cartoon titled “Rabbit Seasoning”. It had these two and Elmer Fudd with the latter hunting. Just picture Romney as Bugs, Odumbo as Daffy and Crowley as Fudd. Remember this routine.

Romney: Ok you got me dead to rites Doc. Would you like to shoot him here or wait to you get home.

Odummy: Shoot him now! Shoot him now!

Romney: You keep out of this. She doesn’t have to shoot you now

Odaffy: Well I say she does have to shoot me now. He goes up to Crowley, So shoot me now! Crowley shoots him and his beak spins around his head.

If you think about it wouldn’t that be funny considering how the debate went.
