Stay Out of Local Law Enforcement, Mr. President: “Racist” Cop Also Tried to Save Black Athlete’s Life

By Debbie Schlussel
Is there still racism in America? If you really look for it, you will find it. But in most of America–even its darkest corners–racism is frowned upon . . .unless it is anti-White racism, which tends to get a free pass. (A man who publicly talked about the “typical White person” is now not only President, but our national prognosticator on race.)
Unfortunately, however, many times–far too many times–in today’s America what is not racism is easily, quickly transformed into it by people with an agenda, and a shoulder chip of equal gargantuan size.
An in that vein, I’m getting really tired of hearing about the “blatant racism” of the police officer in question Cambridge trying to do his job, earlier this week. It got worse, last night, at an alleged press conference about Marxist state run Obama health care, when President Barack Hussein Obama basically called a cop a racist.
The cop we’re talking about here is Sgt. James M. Crowley, who arrested overrated academic Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, Jr., a Harvard prof (whose work focuses on race, racism, and slavery heritage), after the man became unruly and disorderly–practically goading police into arresting him.

jamescrowley.jpghenrrygates.jpg

Sgt. James Crowley, Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

You all know the basics of the story. Gates arrived at his home after a trip. He tried to enter but the door was stuck and thereafter appeared to be breaking in. A neighbor called police, thinking a burglary break-in of some sort was occurring. Crowley responded to the scene.
That’s all we know for sure. The rest is a matter of whose side you are on and whether you are a racism paranoiac and tend to believe police are evil . . . or someone who believes that underpaid Cambridge cops are generally decent working class stiffs trying to do their jobs and were treated like crap by an unduly deified Harvard academic.
Despite the overwhelming mainstream media verbal defecation on the cop–and now the President chiming in with his own version of #2–I tend to vote with the cop.
Gates and his army of “all White cops in America are RACIST!” minions insist that, because the arrest was in the middle of the day and Gates showed his identification and pictures of his family, Officer Crowley must be a racist for arresting him.
Uh, not so fast.
It appears that Gates lorded his Ivy League status and overrated academic credentials over the cop, refusing to cooperate with the investigation or show identification. It appears that, instead, Gates went into a tirade and deserved to be arrested. It appears that instead of an “I am a Black man in racist America” chip on his shoulder, Gates was lugging a “Black man in racist America” boulder on his.

Police say Gates yelled at the officers and initially refused to show his ID. Gates allegedly yelled “this is what happens to a black man in America” and “you don’t know who you’re messing with” before he was arrested, and police said he was uncooperative.

Read the Full Arrest Report, in which the “classy” Gates told Officer Crowley, “Ya, I’ll talk to your mama outside.”
Hmmm, President Obama, I think we know who “acted stupidly,” and it was the Harvard Ph.D., not the cops.
(I bet none of this gets into the documentary about racial profiling in America Gates now says he will produce as a result of the arrest.)
This is what happens when, despite your Harvard credentials, you are trained–and train others–in a culture of shoulder-chips/boulders and “everyone is racist, but I’m important.” That’s Gates’ culture. He is close friends with Whoopi Goldberg and Barack Hussein Obama, both of whom are wealthy and successful beyond their wildest dreams (due in large part to their White consumers and constituents)–and beyond the wildest dreams of most White Americans. . . and both of whom continue to cry racism, anyway (even against–in Obama’s case–his “typical White person” granny).
Both of these people who have come out to defend their friend refuse to acknowledge that he would behave as they have behaved–self-important and rude to “the little people.”
But here’s a newsflash about this alleged “racist White” cop, James M. Crowley:

Nearly 16 years ago, as a Brandeis University police officer, Crowley desperately tried to save the life of Reggie Lewis after the Boston Celtics star collapsed while practicing in the school gym.
“It bothers him terribly that he couldn’t save him,” Crowley’s 74-year-old mother, Verina Crowley, said yesterday, speaking of her son and the famous basketball player.
Crowley was a certified emergency medical technician when he performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Lewis, to no avail, after the player’s heart stopped on July 27, 1993. In a Globe interview later that day, Crowley said he rushed to the university‚Äôs Shapiro Gymnasium, confirmed that Lewis had no pulse, and frantically tried to revive him.
“I just kept on going,” he said. “I just kept thinking, ‘Don’t let him die – just don’t die.'” . . .
People who know Crowley were skeptical or outright dismissive of allegations of racism.

I woke up in the middle of the night and heard some airhead anchorette on ABC News Now–the network’s overnight show for insomniacs–blame that on “racism,” too. Yes, that’s what racists want to believe: that this White cop wanted a Black pro athlete to die and so he “didn’t try hard enough to save him” as the ABC anchor-bim alleged.
I feel for this guy, Crowley. He tries to do his job. And he apparently can do no right. He can do no right, despite trying to do his job for only one reason: he is marked by the pale color of his skin.
And now even a President has marked him as dastardly, not because of the content of his character, but because of the color of his skin . . . and the gold of his badge.
Is there still racism in America? Yes. But, sadly, a good deal of it is exercised by those with darker complexions against those with paler pigmentation.
If a guy is a White cop versus a Black Harvard academic, no matter what the Black Ph.D. must be the “victim” of the “typical White blue collar racist,” right? That’s the real racism here.
Here’s a little tutorial for those with jerking knees:
This is NOT an example of racism: the arrest of a self-important man (his importance measured by pieces of paper he received from the Ivies) by police with whom he became angry, indignant, and invoked the dumbest line you can utter to police just trying to do their dangerous job on America’s streets: Do you know who I am?
That’s not too smart, whether you’re a Ph.D from Harvard or a drop out from Hard Knocks. Regardless of your complexion.

There is another important issue with these false charges of racism. Just think of the incentive here. If Police Officers are going to have problems in cases like these, they may be less likely to stop and question someone in a similar situation. In at least some of these cases there will be a burglar.

You nailed it regarding Dr.Gates, Debbie- he is an over-rated, attitude bearing, nearly-useless-intellectual in the same cut and cast as the Obamessiah himself. You know the type- even they believe they don’t put their pants on one leg at a time. Harvard seems to be the breeding ground for this.
You may have seen the acronym from MIT that reads “IHTFP”- which has any number of variations, the most well known of which is “I Hate This Place- but the majority of them start with “In Harvard They (or There’s)”. In this case I’d apply “Ingenous Harvard Turnsout Fanatical Professors”. 😀
And yes, having lived in Cambridge for nearly 10 years while goign to school and teaching there, the local constabulary are truely your middle class Joe just doign their jobs. By the time the Obamessiah is done, Cambridge MA’s Police willhave the same reputation as LA if he has his way. I’m sure it’s going to be an interesting few days as the “Hallelujah Choir” of Jesse and Uncle AL start making the circuit on this issue as well.
Ya know, I’d be damned glad if a) my neighbor knew I was away and called the cops if they thought someone was breaking into my place, and b) for the cops showing up before “I got in” under similar circumstances. The world is really upside down and it’s a cyr-baby’s paradise these days.

Debbie, I was pleased to see The Chosen One shoot himself in the foot here. Instead of building support for his Marxist health care agenda, he ended up as the Race-Card-Player-in-Chief. This was a Waterloo moment for his health care based government takeover. Also, an inexplicably angry cop once told A1 to not say another word and go home. I was surprised but realized he was ragging, had a gun, and it wasn’t about me. I would have complained afterwards but I negelcted to get his identity.

When do you play the RACE CARD? When you have NOTHING ELSE.
He is officially a LAME DUCK PRESIDENT AND SO EARLY!
He also owes the officer an APOLOGY.

what king barry has achieved so far:
insult and accuse the military of war crimes, lost the vet vote.
threaten to reduce doctor income with socialized medicine, lost the doctor vote.
Call cops doing their jobs stupid, lost the cop vote.
He is not just losing the white vote, with out which he wouldn’t have won. He is losing all the votes regardless of race and gender. His polls will continue to plummet.
who knew he really was a unifier after all.
also watch any episode of cops and see what happens when people try to not admit who they are, it just raises suspicion and can make the cop more nervous about who and what he is dealing with. He refused to prove who he was, red flag, but he wanted to play the victim even tho the cops were there to protect his property (once he proved it was his).
Once he proved it was his the situation was over. He should have thanked the cops for responding to the neighbors 911 call and said good day. But he didn’t, he decided to “al sharpton” it and show off in front of his neighbors just who he was.
And he won, not only were the charges dropped, the President on national TV confirmed his victim hood and insulted the intelligence of police officers every where. He is king of the campus today, he can do his george jefferson strut all day.

I’d love to see this “professor” get his home invaded by bad guys once a week. When the police respond the should let the bad guys go with a stern warning and a promise to never do it again. Especially if they are black. After all we have far too many blacks in prison already, right? They should not be punished but given another chance to change.

Somebody at Hot Air commented correctly that this shows Obama’s incapability as a President and his minor ability to be nothing more than an agitating community organizer.
And America put this jackass in the White House!
[SG: WOW, I’M SURPRISED THE IGNORAMUSES AND COWARDLY GIRLIE-MEN AT HOT AIR DIDN’T BAN THAT GUY FROM COMMENTING, AS THEY DID TO ME, WHEN I POINTED OUT THAT AIRHEAD ED MORRISSEY (WHO PRAISED OBAMA’S MUSLIM SPEECH) WAS BEING RIDICULOUS IN CHEERING AND PRAISING IRAN’S RAFSANJANI–THE MASTERMIND OF THE HEZBOLLAH BUENOS AIRES BOMBINGS OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER AND ISRAELI EMBASSY. “Richard Weinblatt, director of the Institute for Public Safety at Central Ohio Technical College, said the police sergeant was responsible for defusing the situation once he realized Gates was the lawful occupant. It is not against the law to yell at police, especially in a home, as long as that behavior does not affect an investigation, he said.
“That is part of being a police officer in a democratic society,” Weinblatt said. “The point is that the police sergeant needs to be the bigger person, take the higher road, be more professional.”
Quite right.
Once ID is proffered, that should have been the end of it. Instead, the policeman overreacted. Simple as that.

I knew when this broke earlier this week what was going to happen. After all, hes an educated black man. I wonder whats his neighbors race? I wonder why his neighbor didn’t recognize him?
TPTB will continue this forever. Its the only way they can survive. Divide and CONquer.

NAC on July 23, 2009 at 12:35 pm

If Debbie and I were uncooperative with a cop, we won’t get a break. I’ve gotten breaks at traffic stops because I knew enough not to be a smart ass and treat the officer with respect. And they will give you the same. But if you insist they’re wrong, they will show you just where you can put your arrogance. I vote with Debbie that Gates deserved to be arrested.

Obama was totally out of line. He always shows his poor judgment and questionable intelligence when teleprompter is turned off. BO is the worst President EVER. And yes, I remember Jimmy Carter.

Someone should stick this harvard “pinhead” into a pencil sharpener. I wonder how many white guys were passed over to create a slot on the harvard faculty for this racist whore??

joesixpack31 on July 23, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Sadly we have competing interests at work here: on the one hand, law enforcement who’s primary mission is public safety and maintainace of law and order AND on the other hand the islamo-marxist-faggot combine of which Obama is current puppet in chief who’s primary mission is the DE-STABILIZATION/DESTRUCTION of the USA. I don’t make this tuff up..just call em as I see em.

Nonsense. Never happened. President Obama said the officer “acted stupidly.” Big difference.

Um, Deb, I doubt you have to worry about “charges” in the first place.
My point is, being a smart ass to a policeman shouldn’t get you arrested in the first place. And a professional policeman (of which the vast majority are) shouldn’t rise to the bait and should bend over backwards to defuse a non-threatening situation, especially when standing in someone’s house.
I held my tongue recently better than Gates did. A cop pulled into the parking lot that I had just pulled into and berated me for crossing a little bit of a yellow line when I turned behind him as we both sat in a very short turning lane (it only holds two cars and I admittedly make a little bit of a shortcut). He was snotty and hectoring right off the bat and fortunately, I’m white. He was just going to “teach me a quick lesson” about proper driving. If I had decided to question HIM about his driving 10 miles an hour over the speed limit as he did when he passed me a moment earlier, I’m absolutely sure I would have gotten a ticket. So I kept my normal smartass comment to myself and let HIM be the smart ass. He can be as smart of an ass as he wants, but let someone return the favor. That someone is going to pay.
Working downtown in an urban area, I’ve seen cops show remarkable restraint as they try to defuse situations. This cop should have been able to do the same once it was established that he wasn’t dealing with a criminal.
And I think that both of these boneheads need to apologize to each other and the American public.

dw on July 23, 2009 at 3:17 pm

In some ways this situation is similar to the elderly woman who was tasered. While she should not have been tasered, she was resisting arrest after the police officer told her to get up against the truck. You could almost sense that she knew that she was being videoed and was merciless in her taunting and goading of the officer. She just kept going on and on about how “You would not dare taser me. I dare you. I dare you to taser me…” playing the “senior citizen card” of Victimhood in the face of personal irresponsibility. Even the most generous and patient onlooker could very well have found themselves asking, “Taser or no taser?” She was horribly belligerent about being pulled over for speeding. If our President wanted to bemoan something, and criticize a group of citizens, why doesn’t he decry the illegitimacy rate in the black community hovering at around 80%, which can lead to dysfunctional offspring who, sadly, end up in prison due to crimes that they freely commit? Being poor doesn’t necessarily lead to dysfunction, but not having stable, loving parents can. One guesses it’s so much easier to blame everything wrong on the White Man.

Roads Skolar on July 23, 2009 at 3:48 pm

How is Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, Jr. different from Former Senator Larry Craig in dealing with the officer. In both cases the officer was doing his job. Also, in both cases, extreme arrogance got both men into trouble. However, there is one difference Larry did not have the “race card” to play when asked to furnish proper identification. If Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, Jr had been a normal human being, he would have explained himself, shown his identification to the officer, and expressed his gratitude that they keeping up on things such as break-in’s. Instead, Henry went into a blind rage. Finally, disorderly conduct is an offense in and of itself, even if no other offense has been committed. One of the types of disorderly conduct addressed by most statutes is “engages in fighting or in tumultuous conduct.” This section is used to contain belligerent behavior that is disruptive or intimidating.

Worry01 on July 23, 2009 at 4:16 pm

Worry, Debbie who is an attorney, could have given Gates that free advice. No one likes being stopped by the police. But the outcome of the situation can partly be determined by your own conduct.

NormanF on July 23, 2009 at 5:17 pm

This police officer, it turns out TAUGHT a class on sensitivity to racial profiling to police cadets and was highly respected by both black and white officers. He did everything to multi-culti perfection and see how much good it did him. To Boss Yates he’s just a honky cracker.

I had to award my blog’s “Jackass of the week award” to Robt Gibbs- White House press secretary for his “really knowing how to make things better” statement to the press on friday regarding the Obama comments on the “Cambridge Racist Cops”.

When asked how the president’s comments might affect the “so-far” good relationship Obama’s enjoyed with law enforcement, Gibbs replied:

“I think the Fraternal Order of Police endorsed McCain,” Gibbs fired back at reporters, referring to Obama’s Republican opponent in the 2008 election. “If I’m not mistaken.”

Jackass indeed…. I wonder how the beerfest is going today in DC?

When did Pres Obama call the cop a “racist”?

Mark on July 30, 2009 at 12:33 pm

No need to look for RACISM, it appears on its own.

In his e-mail, which was posted on a local Boston television station’s Web site, Barrett declared that if he had “been the officer he verbally assaulted like a banana-eating jungle monkey, I would have sprayed him in the face with OC [oleoresin capsicum, or pepper spray] deserving of his belligerent noncompliance.”

It is funny how you include Obama’s middle name as if it is a negative pun. Surprisingly you did not include the middle name of anyone else.

Interesting…

Tony on July 30, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Hey DW,

You’re so quick to play the “blame” game. Your statement is wrong. Mr. Gates never gave the officer PROPER ID. A university ID does not count as “official ID” and could not immediately verify Mr. Gates address. Instead of cooperating with the police, he chose to be disrespectful and use names/slurs (I’ll go out side with your Mama……”). Real professional, wasn’t he? Deserving of a University Professor position…..NOT.

Having been a former police officer, I was treated respectfully on most occasions and treated everyone, in turn, with respect. However, no one in Sgt. Crowley’s position should have to put up with that type of non-compliance and verbal abuse. Most people with commonsense know that you should not try to “goad” the police unless you are looking to “roll” the dice. Discretion is a powerful thing!

I heard Henry Louis Gates, Jr speak first hand at my graduation at Houston Community College in May 2009. For over an hour: he spoke about how he was a black man and where he graduated. He mentioned several times that he would not have gotten in had he not been a minority. If anyone is raciest… it’s Gates. I cringed when he singled black people out as more important to society as graduates. He is a disgusting little person with a small mind. He doesn’t see people past color. Hope he enjoyed his fifteen minutes because it’s over.
