No Toys For You: Obamaconomy Worst US Toy Market Ever Says Lego Chief; But Sales of Girls’ Construction Sets Up!

By Debbie Schlussel

Over the past couple of years, I’ve given you many stark indicators of how bad the Obamaconomy is, including: dollar store purchases are way down (No Dolla? Holla!), diaper purchases are down and new parents are going longer between changing diapers on their babies (causing increased rashes and medical problems), and sales by the maker of Spam are up 16%. And now there is the Obama Toy Index. The chief of Lego says the current economic climate in the U.S. is the worst for toys that he’s ever seen. For the record, while I loved Legos as a kid (though my favorite toys were Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, and Stikki Wikkis–all of which were a precursor to my interest in architecture and design), if I had kids today, I would not buy them Lego merchandise because Denmark and its people–the ungreat Danes–are extremely anti-Israel. That said, Lego’s top exec’s statements are another loud sign of a crumbling America under Barack Obama. But don’t worry about Lego–the company is doing well by taking a page out of the NOW feminist hag playbook. The company remains profitable because its toys are now aimed at girls–including a girls’ contruction set. Can’t wait until the Lego panties and bustier for boys. We’re headed that way, it seems.

Legobama Or Not, Lego Chief Sees Worst Toy Market Ever in Obamaconomy

The chief executive of Lego A/S signaled deep concern about the U.S. toy market on Friday even after the Danish toy maker reported a solid first-half performance. . . .

Lego is the third-biggest toy maker in the world, after Mattel Inc. and Hasbro Inc., both of which are based in the U.S., and it has about 8% of the global market share. The Billund, Denmark, company is closely held.

Despite Lego’s momentum through June, Chief Executive Jørgen Vig Knudstorp said in an interview that the approaching presidential elections, rising debt and economic uncertainty are weighing on the critical U.S. market.

“The U.S. consumer is still quite heavily indebted, and with an election coming up, whoever gets elected, taxes will go up and government spending will go down,” Mr. Knudstorp said. “So what will that do to consumer spending? So there’s a big factor of uncertainty in the U.S.”

Mr. Knudstorp, a 10-year veteran of the toy industry, said clouds have already formed over the U.S. toy market: “These six months have been the most negative toy market that I have seen in the U.S…so that worries us.”

While concerned about the stability of the U.S. market, Mr. Knudstorp said he is confident Lego can post double-digit growth in the Americas over the coming five to 10 years. . . .

Lego has benefited from new product introductions. Mr. Knudstorp said the company’s big launch in 2012 is an in-house development called Lego Friends, which are construction toys aimed at girls. The company sold twice as many sets as expected in the first six months.

Yup, we need more girls in construction jobs! That’s the ticket. Not long before the Lego Mr. Mom kit and testicle lock box for boys comes out.

In any event, the toy market is bad in America . . . unless you are buying your young daughter a Lego construction kit. As far as I know, Lego hasn’t yet caught up to the market with a Department of Homeland Security/Former ICE Chief of Staff male harassment Lego set.

Here’s my favorite example of “Lego-cana”: the Lego re-enactment video of a scene from “Crocodile Dundee.” If only Mick Dundee were running for Prez, he’d get my vote . . .

That’s not a knife. That’s a knife.

Anyone remember when the toy department had several different kinds of toy guns? And re creating WW2 battles in the neighborhood every night. Nobody wanted to be the Germans for some reason.

RT on September 4, 2012 at 5:44 pm

Sure Do! I was 10 years old when the War ended, and we were in the chicken yard playing drop the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Grandparent’s came running out to tell us Japan had surrendered. We had played war every day with wooden guns. No metal was available for toy guns back then, so we made our own.

Miss Schlussel, Et Alii:

Denmark is anti-Israel?

How do you figure that?

Although, I’m biologically half Danish,I’ve never been to Denmark, and know very little about it.

But, during the Second World War, the Danes were united in protecting Jews from the Nazis.

When the Nazis attempted to round up the Jews, the people of Denmark successfully evacuated most of them to Sweden.

In the movie, EXODUS” (one of my favorites!), the myth is perpetuated that King Christian and all Danes wore the yellow Star of David.

In fact, what happened was the opposite.

In Denmark, NOBODY wore the yellow Star of David, not even the Jews.

Remember also, it was a Danish newspaper which infuriated the Muslims with a cartoon.

So, in what way are the Danes enemies of Israel?

Thank you.

JRM: Click on the link, which will take you to several articles about anti-Israel Denmark. The Danish newspaper was an example of how hypocritical the Danes are. They welcome Muslim inmmigrants to take over their country and espouse Muslim hatred of Israel and the Jewish people, and yet they want us to feel sympathy for them when Muslims get upset over cartoons in their newspaper. They are frauds and hypocrites who don’t connect the very obvious dots. DS

Great story – of all the treachery, treasonous actions, lying, deceit, America and Jew-hating, thinly-veiled Marxism and contempt for our Country that Obama is guilty of, we now find that he also takes toys away from little kids and makes babies get diaper rash.

Obama, Axelrod, Soros and Ayers are indeed the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

DS_ROCKS! on September 4, 2012 at 6:14 pm

The Danish and Denmark bore me to tears. No wonder there.

But of course the Australians are a whole ‘nother ball of wax. As much as I love Oz I have never seen “Crocodile Dundee”. And I have no idea why. Paul Hogan is as dinkum Aussie as any one but like Nicole Kidman, poncey Hugh Jackman and that t*** Russell Crowe (who is really a New Zealander…) he and his movies left me cold. And I hear they are re-making Mad Max. Not to happy about that even thou’ the Mad Max part is gonna be played by a capable actor.

There is one bright spot — diaper purchases are down.

But this shows that the economic reports issued by non-Government entities have become inherently more reliable than those issued by the Government. For the last year, I’ve put more stock in reports by industry organizations than in those issued by the Dept. of Labor, or other Government bodies. As many have said, I think we’ve really gotten to the point where Government reports are potentially lacking in total honesty, and I no longer accept them uncritically unless they are corroborated by non-Governmental data.

Lego moved many of its American based jobs, because of falling sales, from its Connecticut headquarters, to Mexico in 2006. They didn’t close their facility altogether, as it still remained as their north American headquarters. In the last few weeks, it’s been announced that their remaining huge parcel of property in Enfield, Connecticut (near BDL, the Hartford-Springfield airport), is being converted to an Advanced Auto Parts distribution center. So long Lego!

Neils60 on September 4, 2012 at 8:35 pm

So, I guess today’s girls would only be inspired by playing with legos to become construction workers as Debbie implies, they’d never think of becoming architects or designers like she did. Of course not! Only Debbie has such original ideas. NOT! I was playing with Lincoln logs and Gilbert erector set a generation before Debbie was even a gleam in Dr. Schlussel’s eye and had those very same thoughts. Imagine that! I never once wanted to dig a ditch the way my male cousin did during his college Summers.
And of course the corollary to this is that Debbie gave up her dreams of becoming the female Frank Lloyd Wright so that some GUY could have a job. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight!

I: Um, it’s a CONSTRUCTION kit for girls that is buoying Lego profits. I never played with anything of the sort. And I never dreamed of becoming the female Frank Lloyd Wright. RIF–Reading Is Fundamental. Try reading what’s actually there instead of creating out of thin air what isn’t there. Parents who give their girls construction kits and their boys dolls to play with are morons. DS

Italkit on September 4, 2012 at 9:26 pm

If Debbie wanted to be an architect nothing wrong with it. Lots of women are in the field.

The only societies that keep women from contributing to their welfare are Muslim societies that frown on female participation.

And we sure don’t want to be like them regardless of how many Lego construction toy kits are marketed to girls.

NormanF on September 4, 2012 at 9:46 pm

Norman, again you chose to totally misread my post when we’re saying the same thing. That’s exactly my point. Debbie wanted to be an architect because she played with Lincoln logs, etc but girls today only aspire to “construction jobs” after playing legos, according to her?

And lets see, Muslim women who’ve done nothing, hmmm, putting politics aside, Pakistan has had a woman prime minister, Bhutto, while the US can’t even find a decent woman to run for Veep. There are others, and the society is essentially matriarchal but not in the “in your face” way Northern or Eastern European women try to run the show. If the fanatics get the upper hand, and they seem to be doing so, they will enter the real dark ages but up til now, any even semi-educated Muslims have let women have a say. They want you to think they’re monolithic but the truth is they are diverse in their thinking and beliefs.

Italkit on September 5, 2012 at 1:04 am

I offer the above comments not in praise or as a defense but as a cautionary tale. Understand your enemy. The Taliban is a small minority. Loud and problematic, but small. If you persist in believing that their primitive attitudes are the majority in Islam, you are missing what is going on. They are inciting young men but that is to give them an impetus to join forces. When testosterone is pumping, men will take any opportunity to misbehave with women. Build their rage and you build the sexual aggression. Why do you think rape and war go hand in hand? So, you have men behaving badly because they’re pumped up with ideas of war, aggression and victory. When the young men were less motivated, they knew there were girls they could always get and girls who were off limits but now those limits have been broken by charlatans who misuse their offices to mislead the gullible for their own purposes.

Don’t pity them but be aware of their mindset and understand that they are being used by those in power, including women behind the scenes.

Italkit on September 5, 2012 at 1:15 am

Debbie, we had a really “skinny” Christmas in 2011 and will again this year (because my husband is out of work). I know we represent a lot of people who would like to be able to buy more for our kids. Thanks for writing about this.

Mominminnesota on September 4, 2012 at 9:49 pm

I’ve bought lots of Legos for my son over the years. He plays for hours and hours with them. The problem is that Legos are expensive, and there are plenty of knock-offs which go for far less. A 1000-piece popular Lego Star Wars set goes for $120 or more. That’s not chump change for a box of plastic (although in my experience it’s well worth it).

adam on September 4, 2012 at 10:31 pm

Italkit, all the Muslim countries that have had women leaders (Pakistan, Bangladesh & Indonesia) had them as a result of them being daughters or spouses of male leaders. Nobody got there on their own reputation.

Only exception I can think of @ the moment was Tansu Çiller in Turkey, who was their only female prime minister from 1996 to 2002. I can’t think of any others who got to the top on their own merit.

You are also missing the point about what drives young Muslims to Jihad. It’s not any lack of jobs, or leaders inciting them. It’s Islam. You see it in a whole range of Muslim countries – both rich as Saudi Arabia, and as poor as Afghanistan. Encouraging boys & men to play war games, develop their fighting skills and so on is not all it takes to make them into criminals. The moral underpinnings also define it. W/ most religions, they get that, and so you don’t normally have rapes accompanying war. It’s different w/ Muslims b’cos Islam encourages Muslims to take women captives as spoils of war, and treat them however they like. That is what makes them such dangerous criminals, not them being merely incited by extremist leaders.

But back to the toys deal. I think that given all the PlayStations, Wii’s, X-Boxes, iPads and even laptops and the wide variety of games that are available either in softcopy or online, toy sales have plummetted. Why buy a monopoly set if you can get it on your iPad or your laptop w/o having to carry it around, risking losing physical pieces and dealing w/ the limitations of the physical game? But part of the decline of toys is also the wussification of America’s kids – monster action figures, for instance, are banned in schools. So are toy guns and fighting themes. Yeah, construction sets are different to play w/ than computer generated construction games. Dora is an explorer while Diego is an animal lover. You get the picture.

In other words, while the economy may be a good part of the reason that the toy market is bad, I don’t agree that it’s the only reason for it. Even if the economy did a big recovery, I doubt that toy sales would be the same again, given everything that’s replaced it.

Infidel on September 5, 2012 at 2:02 am

And you really think, Infidel, that western women got where they are on their own ability? What’s Debbie been saying about affirmative action for years and years? If a woman didn’t have a husband to get her into the spotlight, ala, Madame Clinton, she had AA. If you dig far enough, they ALL were connected. Why even Judith Martin, a/k/a, Miss Manners had a father on the diplomatic circuit which was quite an accomplishment for a Jewish man back then. It was because of him that she got a column in the WaPo and could sell herself as some sort of expert on etiquette based on her experiences.
I wasn’t talking about jobs, I was talking about how Debbie took a swipe at girls who play with Legos saying there would now be more girls in “construction jobs” while claiming her playing with building blocks led to the exalted heights of “architecture and design” while those poor construction slobs actualize her vision.

” But part of the decline of toys is also the wussification of America’s kids – monster action figures, for instance, are banned in schools. So are toy guns and fighting themes. Yeah, construction sets are different to play w/ than computer generated construction games. Dora is an explorer while Diego is an animal lover. You get the picture.”
Yaa, I do get that picture. too well. But most boys manage. My daughter gave her sons a baby doll and they immediately turned it into a weapon by pointing it at each other and saying “bang bang.” HaHa. She realized that it IS nature not nurture alone and she didn’t discourage gun play after than although she does encourage their caring sides and to me, that’s manly. Debbie talks about her Dad a lot and that he was an opthomologist. Mine was a Family Doctor. I’m not going to say that eye docs aren’t caring or nurturing, I reserve that for neurologists, haha, but FP’s have more opportunity to show their tender sides with minor issues. My Dad was all man, Italian man, but he was tender, caring, generous and compassionate. He didn’t cuss, sit around in underware or smell but he was not girly.

Italkit on September 5, 2012 at 6:08 am

Italkit, if you seriously believe that the status of women in Western countries is anything even close to that of Pakistan, Bangladesh or even Indonesia, I doubt that there’s anything I can say to convince you otherwise.

Infidel on September 5, 2012 at 7:28 am

Well, I hope all the women’s libbers in the US who criticize Americans’ hostility to Muslim countries (to the extent it exists anymore) have been reading Italkit’s posts. She has provided a rationalization for supporting Muslim countries in spite of their bestiality towards women. I really didn’t think I would see something like this from a regular contributor to this site.

This is related to the postmodern influence shown by her making inferential leaps based on little or no concrete data. Maybe we’ll see a competition between Mensa and Harvard for political obtuseness.

Little Al on September 5, 2012 at 8:45 am

Was at the mall yesterday and the Lego store was so full that there was a line of kids waiting their turn to get in. I don’t know what the deal was (the new construction kit intro?), but it sure seemed a little too much fuss to go through just to buy Legos.

CornCoLeo on September 5, 2012 at 10:00 am

If Obama gets re-elected maybe girls can use their construction kits to make toy crack-houses.

CornCoLeo on September 5, 2012 at 10:02 am

It is very interesting that a bachelorette-by-choice who works as a lawyer, which is a formerly male-dominated field, would pick on a toy company that is encouraging girls to have a career in another male-dominated field.

Lee on September 5, 2012 at 10:06 am

I guess Lee is as much of a moron as the other numbskulls. The criticism of the toy company was because of its comfort level with Muslim killers, and accommodation to Muslims, as anyone with more than a primary grades reading level should be able to figure out. Yet, somehow, the focus of the comments has been on toys for children. But I shouldn’t be too surprised. This echoes the politicians’ desire to change the subject to anything but accommodation to Muslims.

Little Al on September 5, 2012 at 11:03 am

I guess ‘Little’ in your name ‘Little Al’ stands for your brain size. Read the end of the first paragragh and the complete last paragraph. Maybe then you’ll understand, unless your brain is already full reading this!

Lee on September 5, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Little Al, the “comfort level with Muslim killers” of the toy company is simply a side note; it is why DS won’t buy their products. But her article seems to me to be about indicators of how healthy our economy is under Obama. DS implies the lack of toy sales indicates a bad economy.

Rik on September 5, 2012 at 1:27 pm

No, Lee, the ‘Little’ stands for the small amount of patience I have with nitwits who cannot write anything substantive.

And again, Rik, reading is fundamental. If you reread my comments, they were specifically concerned with the reason for the criticism of the toy company, not the reason for the article as a whole. Just as Lee’s prior comment centered on criticism of the toy company, mine did also. Neither comment addressed the article as a whole, which of course, was about the faltering economy.

Little Al on September 5, 2012 at 5:01 pm

Debbie as a young Jewish boy I had a used set of Lincoln logs, a few of those little green army men and a cap gun. I rode my bike around from the time I was 6 and went fishing in the nearby woods. Kids these says have too many toys and all it does is make them more miserable. If G-d provided me with a son I’d give him some Magna-tiles for rainy days, a slingshot, a compass and a fishing pole. I would pay for college and graduate school but after that the dude would be on his own except for emergencies.

A1 on September 5, 2012 at 11:40 pm

I agree with Debbie that it’s pretty stupid to give boys dolls. From the onset I saw the aisles of dolls offered to boys for what they were- a subtle induction into the homosexual lifestyle. From GI Joe’s rippling muscles, to the fabulous costumes of the Power Rangers, to He-Man’s pornstar-esque physique, it’s patently obvious that the toys are to entice boys into admiring rock hard muscles, colorful costumes, and larger than life men.

Granted, I was a total ‘mo anyway, but even then I thought…Too gay. Though I suppose giving boys Barbies so that they can fixate on boobs early on wouldn’t be so bad…
