Which White Actor Should Play Martin Luther King, Jr?: Announcing The Draft Owen Wilson Committee

By Debbie Schlussel
The other day we all heard news that pitch Black actor Jamie Foxx (slave name: Eric Bishop) is being seriously considered to play Frank Sinatra in a bio-flick about “Old Blue Eyes.”
And so, in this vein, when I read that, yesterday, DreamWorks Studios announced plans for the “first big-screen portrayal of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” I was thinking of who should have a serious shot of playing him.
And I was thinking–of course!–it should be . . . OWEN WILSON. After all, we’ve moved beyond the race thing. And who better to play Dr. King than the very blond, very pale White Owen Wilson.

I Have a Dream

I mean, after all, Wilson looks as much like King as Foxx looks like Sinatra.
And, as we all know, the great Dr. King would have preferred that people be judged by the content of their acting chops and not by the color of their skin.
What’s good for the Foxx is good for the Wilson. So, I am starting a committee, “DRAFT Owen Wilson to Play MLK.”
Oh, and by the way, Jamie Foxx is slated to host the 2009 BET Awards show. And I think that he should quit defining himself in such a small category.
After all, as we all know, in the spirit of Sinatra, FOXX should be hosting the Italian American Foundation banquet. And play Rocky in Rocky VII. I’m sure it’s no coincidence that his first name ends in a vowel. So, it’s all kosher. Capisce?
Maybe you can come up with a paler, Whiter actor for the King role. Suggestions in the comments section.

Debbie –
Your lack of PC imagination astounds both myself and all of SHIELD!!!!
…the obvious choice is Cherry Jones, coming off her run as president in this seasons’s ’24’!!!

In this vain, Jamie Foxx has been popping up on country music award shows and performing with country artists. Huh? He showed up at the ACMs and had to drool all over Obama.

JAT on May 20, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Gary Busy? Or Gary Busy’s son to portray a younger King.
Conan O’Brien could also pull it off.
On a musical note Gene Simmons only because of his reputation for going through the ladies. Too dark though.
You nailed this one Debbie. Where the hell do you pick up these scoops anyway?

I know – how about Powder?

YamSlinger on May 20, 2009 at 2:45 pm

How about Michael Jackson. In real life he has been both White and Black.

A thread like this will really bring out the bigots. You can bet the spelling and grammar will be atrocious.

Only in the demented Liberal brain could anyone consider a black man to portray a white person. This shows you just how fucked-up the Liberal PC world truly is. I mean, these demented Liberals just don’t live in the real world.
I think they should consider former child TV commercial star with the pudgy face and red hair from the 1970’s, Mason Reese, to portray both MLK AND Barack Hussein Obama.

How’s that for matching Liberal dementia.

WTF over?! who had the bright idea that Jamie fox looks anything LIKE Sinatra?

mindy1 on May 20, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Jamie did a really good job as Ray Charles.
The jump from that to doing “The Chairman of the Board” is a bit of a stretch don’t you think?
Would I be raaaacist if I suggest he’d probably be a better Sammy Davis Jr.?????

There can be no casting for MLK without proper pay-to-play to the estate of MLK!
Foxx seems to be better at playing people than being one in real life. Such are the exploits of a race baiter:
Jamie Foxx (presenter) and Miley Cyrus (performer) were both recently on the Academy of Country Music Awards (CMAs) show in Las Vegas, 4/5/09, on CBS. I couldn’t believe it when Foxx presented and mused about how a black man, himself, would be singing country on the upcoming George Straight salute special (filmed 4/6 to air 5/27 on CBS), and this indicates how far our country has come racially. Dude! taking a crap on a music legend doesn’t make your genius obvious. Charlie Pride has 4 gold records, multiple CMA winner with Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year awards, and still touring. I guess Foxx doesn’t want to play Charlie in a biopic but doesn’t MTV say old school gives thespians/pop musicians street cred?
When did country music lose its low brow status or is he slummin’ for the night? When at the age of 14 he learned Straight was to play his hometown, despite being warned that it wasnít a good idea, Foxx vowed he would ìcross whatever tracks I had to go over, but Iím going to see George Strait.î Foxx apparently believes Americans living on the wrong side of the tracks are equal but some are more equal than others. Such condescension.

Second reminder….it’s CAPISCE .

49smudge on May 20, 2009 at 7:40 pm

Scorcese has his eye on that insipid DiCaprio for the Sinatra role.

49smudge on May 20, 2009 at 7:41 pm

We were successful at removing BET and MTV from our cable line up in our HOA because the residents did not want to support the crap on those networks.
The last time I was able to see BET they had gangster rap on and MTV was the same sewer spewing doggy do 24/7.
They gave us the Golf Channel and SciFi instead for free and will do not have to block the TV for when the grand kids visit.
I vote for Alan Stang to play MLK 😉

Ashton Kutcher

Ribelin2000 on May 21, 2009 at 2:25 am

Or how about Michael Richards? That ought to make Black people REAL happy!

Ribelin2000 on May 21, 2009 at 2:28 am

Debbie-
The report you refer was a joke on Gawker “But, all things considered, we think it should go to the reigning king of music biopics. Jamie Foxx, whaddaya say?” which The Telegraph reported as real, perhaps due to a prankster. More importantly, this mistake was all over the blogs days ago:
10:03 AM on Mon May 18 2009
Last week we made a joke that Jamie Foxx should play Frank Sinatra in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming biopic about the singer. Well, now Brit tabloids are making the same joke, except they call it “reporting.”
So, having discovered this, I assume you are going to be better than the media and put out a retraction.
[T: I HAVE SEEN NO RETRACTION IN THE GUARDIAN OR THE WASHINGTON POST, BOTH OF WHICH REPORTED ON THIS. NEITHER CITED “GAWKER,” EITHER. DS]

TrenchantOkay on May 21, 2009 at 9:45 am

Of course this sounds like a joke. It also sounds identical to modern liberalism. Can you blame anybody for getting them both confused?

Carlos on May 21, 2009 at 10:27 am

I’m half Cherokee.. I always laughed that in the past, “injuns” were protrayed largely by italians like Michael Ansara and Frank DeKova. I guess the wheel has turned full circle. lol

Mistress_Dee on May 21, 2009 at 4:03 pm

I want Paul Bettany to play King. Preferably in his Silas make up.

T.Spitzer on May 21, 2009 at 7:25 pm

“I HAVE SEEN NO RETRACTION IN THE GUARDIAN OR THE WASHINGTON POST, BOTH OF WHICH REPORTED ON THIS. NEITHER CITED “GAWKER,” EITHER. DS]”
So if a British tabloid reports it and is too embarrassed to retract it, Debbie thinks it MUST be the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Even Tina Brown retracted it in The Daily Beast. It was an obvious joke, Debbie. Get with the program.
[I: ARE YOU CALLING THE WASHINGTON POST A “BRITISH TABLOID”? FUNNY, I THOUGHT WASHINGTON WAS IN THE U.S., BUT I GUESS SOME PEOPLE STILL DO CONSIDER AMERICA, “THE COLONIES” OF BRITAIN. APPARENTLY, THAT INCLUDES YOU. IT WAS “AN OBVIOUS JOKE” THAT CATE BLANCHETT WAS BEING CONSIDERED TO PLAY BOB DYLAN. AND YET IT HAPPENED. BUT I GUESS I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT IT HAPPENED, B/C THAT’S NOT “WITH THE PROGRAM.” THANKS FOR THE “TIP.” DS]

http://gawker.com/5259274/guys-we-were-just-kidding-about-that-jamie-foxx-as-frank-sinatra-thing
[I: AH, SO IF A BLOG–WHICH WAS NEVER CITED AS A SOURCE–CLAIMS IT’S THE SOURCE AND THAT IT WAS A JOKE, I SHOULD AUTOMATICALY BELIEVE THEM? TRY THAT ON SOMEONE ELSE. DS]

imserious on May 21, 2009 at 11:03 pm

The Washington Post’s “source” was The Daily Telegraph whose own source was The Daily Express which itself cited an unnamed source. Your Cate Blanchett reference doesn’t hold water because she openly discussed that role with the media. What is it about The Daily Express that makes you believe them over the countless other periodicals that say otherwise. Just Google “hoax” Foxx” and “Sinatra” to see what I mean.

Imserious on May 22, 2009 at 2:39 am

Both films would be certain flops and good candidates for Federal bailouts.
