Gulen Muslim Charter Schools: “60 Minutes” Does Mostly a Whitewash (VIDEO)

By Debbie Schlussel

America is finally waking up to Islamic charter schools, an issue I’ve been complaining about for at least two decades. It’s a problem created not by liberals, but by conservative Republicans.

I’ve long marched to a different beat than the blind-faith conservatives who sing the siren song of charter schools.  When I was in grad school in Wisconsin in the early to mid-1990s, I watched as the primary driver behind that state’s charter schools was a female Black Muslim legislator, hailed by the conservative masses without any critical thinking skills.  And soon after her work was passed, Milwaukee had Nation of Islam charter schools.  And so did Detroit, after Michigan passed its law.  And Arab Muslims took advantage, too, in Michigan and Minnesota and many other places.  But, whenever I’d raise the questions about these schools to conservatives, they didn’t want to hear it.  They insisted there was oversight, but in fact there isn’t.  In Michigan, for example, most of these schools are “supervised” by small state colleges hundreds of miles away, with those colleges rubber-stamping the charter schools’ qualifications and collecting oversight fees. In recent years, conservative state legislators from various states have contacted me to consult on how to regulate and prevent these Muslim charter schools. My answer: get rid of charter schools. There is no other way. And the Gulen Islamic charter schools, which often go by the name “Harmony Schools” or “Horizon Schools,” are Exhibit A of my argument. The Islamic charter schools are the fault and creation ENTIRELY of the right and conservative Republican legislators around the country. Remember, liberal Democrats opposed charter schools. And even though it was for the wrong reasons, they were right.

CBS’ “60 Minutes” Whitewashes the Gulen Islamic Charter Schools

In case you did not see CBS News’ “60 Minutes” last night, I recommend that you watch the video report below, which ran on yesterday’s show.  The report, about the Gulen charter schools, run by the Turkish imam, doesn’t really cover any new ground, since I’ve been hearing from concerned parents and citizens about these schools for years, and the story has been covered in places like the Wall Street Journal.  But, per usual and like most of the mainstream media reports, CBS News’ Leslie Stahl largely whitewashes the schools, which are basically Islamic charter schools funded by American taxpayer dollars.  And they are also mills for immigration fraud by Turkish Muslims and kickbacks to the Gulen Islamic machine.

(Read the transcript of the report here.)

Even though Stahl mostly gives the Gulen schools a pass, I have to say she points out more criticism of the schools than I’ve seen from the mainstream media so far.  The most marked point, aside from those I just mentioned, is that the schools get special talent visas for Muslim teachers teaching subjects for which there are many unemployed, qualified American teachers currently seeking work, including math and . . . ENGLISH!

Still, some of her statements are ridiculous.  Stahl says that she and CBS News confirmed that Islam is never taught in the schools because that would violate the law.  Um, how does she know this?  Has she simultaneously been in all of the dozens of Gulen schools in 22 states across the United States for every hour on ever day the schools are opened?  Nope, she spent a few hours at a few schools.  That’s it.  And they gave her their best show, just like the Nazis did with their few model concentration camps they showed the Red Cross.  I mean, this is supposed to be an “investigative” journalism news outfit.   And, yet–par for the course–she makes a blanket statement absolving the schools with absolutely no evidence to back that statement up.

Regardless, even if Islam isn’t taught in the schools, it’s about exposing children to Muslims who run a school and propagandizing them to think that Muslims are the best teachers, best preparers for adult life, etc.  That was, in fact, the propaganda you got from Stahl as she gushed over the teaching at these schools and showed Black students excelling.  When you have schools run by Islamic religious figures, where the education is imparted mostly by Muslim teachers, there is a positive propaganda effect.  And, not looked into by Stahl or raised in her piece, there are many important questions, including:  how many non-Muslim teachers are employed?  Where is the Justice Department looking at discrimination practices against non-Muslims in the hiring statistics at the schools?  There clearly seems to be a distinct and overwhelming pattern against non-Muslims.  That’s illegal.

Stahl mentioned that federal immigration officials are seriously looking at the charges of immigration fraud.  And if you believe that, I have some land in the Pacific Ocean to sell you.  They might be looking, but that’s it.  And they aren’t looking “seriously.”  Mark my word:  you will never see the Justice Department or ICE–whether under Barack Obama or Mitt Romney–do anything.  I know for a fact that many concerned citizens, including even some parents who contacted me after removing their kids from the schools, contacted federal authorities with a lot of evidence long ago.  The Bush Administration knew about the schools’ fraudulent and illegal practices for eight years and did nothing.  The Obama people did nothing.  And the Romney people will be exactly the same.  We can’t go after Muslim lawbreakers, because they might hate us.  It’s the same old BS.

Stahl wasn’t permitted to interview Gulen, because he’s allegedly too sick to talk to her. But it would make no difference, had she been able to interview him. She didn’t ask any critical questions to his assistant, who seems to be running the show now. It was all softball stuff. And the story was mostly puffery.

For the record, in some ways, Fethullah Gulen, the Pennsylvania-based Turkish imam who is behind the schools, is more moderate than other Muslims.  (But all things are relative in Islam.)  For example, he condemned the Turkish HAMAS flotilla of 2010 and said it shouldn’t have set sail.  He disagreed with the Turkish government in its condemnation of Israel over the aftermath.  But that Turkish government is controlled by many of his followers and adherents, most of whom are far more radical than he is.  And since he is very old and very sick, his followers, who will soon take over, are a scary development. The chain of schools in the Midwest that copied his chain and is affiliated, is run by extremist Arab Muslims who teach hate. It’s a slippery slope.

Remember, your tax dollars are paying for this. And they wouldn’t be if these were Christian or Jewish “charter schools.”

As I always say, the Establishment Clause of the Constitution is in the garbage when it comes to Islam. We’ve already established that religion reigns supreme to our laws on our own soil.

Nothing to see here. Move along.
Special treatment is what they’ve arrogantly come to expect. Special treatment is what they’ll continue to get.
Years ago at Correctional Training Facility Soledad, California, it was the Muslim Imam that had state paid living quarters on facility grounds. I can only assume this hasn’t changed. Officers were discouraged by supervisors to actually monitor their services. Wouldn’t want to offend.

Although the majority of my interview landed on the 60 Minutes editing room floor, I can assure the readers that the federal government is actively engaged in an investigation and I am confident that in the relatively near future there will be arrests made(many I suspect). These schools and their operators have been exposed and it is only a matter of time.

Mary Addi on May 15, 2012 at 4:07 pm

Yes, support your local madrassa Dhimmi, and do not ask questions. These schools would not be able to operate on such a scale without taxpayer subsidies.

60 Minutes has not had much credibility for a very long time now. Long ago, what it revealed was indeed breaking news, but no longer. 60 Minutes almost always plays it safe now, and finds it convenient to whitewash those it approves of. That is not journalism, much less investigative journalism.

Worry01 on May 14, 2012 at 10:42 am

Debbie stop preaching hatered. Some people think only whites are “true” Americans. American Muslims are Americans too. We have to accept each other to coexist even if we have different faiths.

Muslim American on May 14, 2012 at 11:39 am

Um, did you read the entire article from start to finish? Where in this article is DS preaching “hatred” as you’ve claimed? She is reporting the FACTS something that the media should be doing, instead of sugar-coating and whitewashing certaiin things.

So let me get this straight Muslim American, is now telling the truth, speaking you’re mind, calling a spade-a-spade, etc. considered preaching hatred? And you talk about co-exist, until the rest of you’re co-religionists can get along with their fellow mankind, instead of being INTOLERANT of other peoples POV, faiths, sexual orientation, etc., then we can talk about “co-exists”!

“A nation is defined by its borders, language & culture!”

    Sean R. on May 14, 2012 at 11:53 am

Hey Muslim American, you might try reading the entire article. Your post is about as meaningful as a dog barking, since you were too lazy to. Also, coming into this place and just blurting out what you just did for no apparent reason is rude and hateful. You obviously have no desire to get along with anyone, but simply wish to intimdate them like a street thug.

No one forced you to come here, and no one is preventing you from leaving. You may reside in the United States, but there is very little that is American about you.

    Worry01 on May 14, 2012 at 3:03 pm

“Preaching hatred”??? Where exactly in the article (which I suspect you haven’t read) is she preaching hatred?
She’s just doing what 60 minutes ought to have done: Investigative journalism. Comments like yours just prove her point.

Let me guess M.A. You have a nice “Coexist” bumper sticker on your car bumper. Go to Iraq and tell that to them. When they aren’t busy blowing up the few remaining Christians. Can’t stand trolls like you. Please sterilize yourself to not further contaminate this world.

Ah yes. Demand our tolerance, give none in return.

If you aren’t white, why did Muhammad say to kill the one that says he’s not white? Is it an insult for you Muslims? Is that why allah promises to make Muslims white before he’ll let them in paradise?

MeMeMe on May 15, 2012 at 3:55 pm

I see your point in attempting to halt all “hatred” speech. However, most Americans are waiting for Muslim Americans to stand up and denounce all forms of terrorism and intimidation that are taking place around the globe in the name of Islam. I am confident that most Israelis are waiting for the same denunciation of all violent acts that are carried out by their neighbors in the region. You state that people of different faiths should be able to co-exist. You are correct. All people should co-exist since we all dwell on the same planet. However, many terrorists (and the nations that support them) do not wish to co-exist with anyone who disagrees with their belief system or ideology. Sadly, many Americans live in la-la land and seem content to keep dreaming that all people will someday live in a small, small world like Disneyland. Like many other dreams, that wishful thinking is absurd.

Simply American on May 26, 2012 at 6:17 pm

I have not watched 60 Minutes in many years. It all BS.

I have three concerns:

That Stahl had to mention that Islam is not taught in the schools is not investigative journalism is a plain coverup.

“Stahl says that she and CBS News confirmed that Islam is never taught in the schools because that would violate the law.”

Let’s show the world that these Muslims are great people and are doing a better job than “we” are “educating” our children.

Another concern may be that the teachers unions may have something to say about the hiring practices of these schools.

Third, if our taxes are going to these schools then is some of that money (of course it is) is going to HAMAs or other Muslim organizations? These schools then are a laundering facility, not a school.

Panhandle on May 14, 2012 at 11:45 am

Terrific investigative reporting DS, stories like this has to get out to the general public more frequently so they can know what exactly is happening in muslim charter schools and other religious charter schools, etc.

And when Mr. Gulen steps-down sometime in the future due to his physical health, leaders who’ll take over will be way more worst than Mr. Gulen (Gulen is a moderate-muslim and not an islamists) as Debbie explained. And as the same old goes and says, “Religion Screws Up Everything”! It’s not that I’m anti-religion, anti-faith, anti-spirituality, etc., it’s that I’m clearly anti-theocracy which I’m against dogmatic-religious policies being imposed on people, etc.

…My Dear Deb –

…I waste about 4 hours per YEAR watching fanboy movies.

…..YOU waste more than that weekly watching worthless Hollywood vomit…

…you need a plan of attack to affect the culture; George Washington would have never stooped to movie reviews.

Nick Fury on May 14, 2012 at 12:04 pm

Of course he would have Nick, if movies had been around. You need to read his biography sometime. He was wealthy planter and in high society. George Washington also had to sufficiently impress his fellow revolutionaries in order to demonstrate that he was up to the tasks before him. An illiterate farmer from the hills would not have gotten the command of the Continental Army.

So Nick, spare us and Debbie your crude remarks. This is not Stormfront.

Seek on May 14, 2012 at 4:58 pm

In theory, charter schools are a good idea since children get exposed to different perspectives in life but the problem is how do you keep them from being exposed to extremist views?

It would be nice to have one’s cake and eat it too and Debbie pointed out the problems with charter schools outweigh any possibility of benefiting from them.

So get rid of them even though conservatives wanted to break with the liberal public school monopoly. Its the unintended consequences of them that are not good for America.

NormanF on May 14, 2012 at 12:23 pm

It comes down to supporting private schools, and not expecting the state or federal governments to pick up the bill. Catholic parochial schools are the most obvious example of what can be achieved. These schools were and are supported by their communities, and are not greenhouse plants that can only survive in a charter school system. I generally have problems with any public schools that express themselves in racial or ethnic ways. There have been problems with Hispanic themed schools pushing racist and separatist ideology in their charter school programs.

Here is an example from California: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academia_Semillas_del_Pueblo#Academic_Performance

Do note that this school performed very poorly when its students were tested. Also, as in the case of Gulen Muslim Chater Schools, the curriculum content seemed to be of little importance to the authorities. Despite a record of deteriorating academic performance from an already low level, the school’s charter was renewed.

Stop the discriminatory practices at US publicly funded Gulen charter schools.

This organization which operates 130 charter schools in the United States has been violating the civil rights of American teachers and administrators for the past eleven years by blatantly ignoring federal age, nationality, and gender equal opportunity laws. Further, their practices have supplanted American jobs by bringing in H1-B visa holders instead of hiring qualified and available American teachers and administrators, and all the while using American tax dollars to do so. The American tax payers are not only losing jobs, but are also required to pay for H1-B visa fees and in many instances graduate degrees for the foreign teachers and administrators.

With unemployment rates still at an all time high, let’s ask our government officials why they are still allowing the influx of H1-B visa employees to take American jobs when the United States has a wealth of qualified and credentialed American teachers and administrators.

Please sign and circulate to to as many other people as you can. We demand that our gov gets off its ass.

Leslie Stahl’s “fascination” with Islamists.

It has been a long career of pro-Islamism “research,” by this eloquent reporter for CBS’ 60min.
In the latest example (May, 13, 2012 http://www.cbsnews.com/2718-18560_162-962.html) she made  a piece about Gulen, the Turkish Islamic cleric/tycoon who “funds” schools in the US and turns them into revenues for his global empire.
In quoting blogs that criticize Gulen as having a hidden Islamic agenda, she confronted one of Gulen’s representatives about it, but instead of waiting for an answer from the man, Leslie jumped and PROVIDED an answer of her own… ” Would you say it’s Islamophobia..?” The man, of course, agreed to the provided “answer.”
This is typical Leslie Stahl.

In fact, the entire program was not focused on the American English teacher who was fired for the sake of replacing her with a Turkish teacher… but on her fascination with the Turkish cleric. She was so memorized by his wealth… All you saw from her was, awe. Some “fearless” reporter, seeking the “truth,” alright.

(I remember, she once [last year] took an Arab-Palestinian word… his ficticious claim that he has been in the area for… “hundreds” of years… at face value. Never mind that no Arab can prove any connection to the land of the Jews beyond the 1800s… Or the latest admission from the horse’s mouth – Hamas to Egyptian media that “Palestinians” are basically half from Egypt, the other half from other Arab land…)

Here are some suggestions to Leslie, if she were to be a bit less bias…
Let’s see a bit reporting on the Goliath. Not just in power and size, but in… intolerance!

1 – Checkout the usual venomous sermons in “moderate” mosques. Why not pick the March 15, 2012 example of top Islamic authority (mufti) calling to destroy all churches. Or the latest “moderate” Islamists (Egypt) call for jihad to march on Jerusalem as capital of a Caliphate?
2 – Scrutinize the ocean of racism against non-Arabs from Arabia to Sudan (Afro-Arabs, massacring millions of non-Arab natives); Mauritania (slavery), through Iraq (Assyrians, Kurds, Blacks, Yazidis, etc., all still discriminated against); Syria (the Alawite apartheid genocidal regime), Libya, Gulf states (Oman, Kuwait, S. Arabia, Qatar, UAE, where Asian workers/slaves are constructing their impressive buildings, and/or Asian maids are basically sex-slaves); N. Africa (e.g. Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, not just blacks, but Berbers natives to the land,  have for too long suffered immensely); Lebanon (which hosts 200,000 living in the same slavery conditions as the African slave/maid who committed suicide this year. Or the Ahmadis as well as children of black slaves at the hands of) Palestinian-Arabs; (the Dom-gypsies in) Jordan; (the indigenous al-Akhdam in) Yemen, etc.  Just because Arab Christians fear for their lives and won’t speak on camera against totalitarian Palestinian Islamic-apartheid, doesn’t mean, CBS should be silent….
These are just the tip of the iceberg, non-Muslims are either second or third in almost all Muslim land. Not just in Iran/Pakistan/Afghanistan/S.Arabia/Palestinian-Authority/Egypt, etc. Even in “moderate” Turkey, especially on Cyprus.
3 – Scrutinize the pro terror CAIR Islamic lobby (tied to criminal al-Arian).
4 – Heck, you can even make a ‘special’ on dehumanization in Islamic schools. The favorite one is of course the sick notion that Christians are pigs and Jews as apes.
5 – Last but not least, for CBS info… Terrorism against non-Muslims such as in Nigeria, Russia,  Egypt, China, Israel, India, Philippines, Thailand, etc., or even against Muslims who are ‘not Muslim enough…’ by jihadists, such as in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, etc., is also intolerance, and a very bloody one!

Pierre on May 14, 2012 at 1:01 pm

The posting on Sixty Minutes was right on target. As for Imam Gulen’s being more moderate than some Muslims: could he be practicing taqqiya? Americans love to see an elderly, fatherly Muslim scholar who appears moderate. It eases their fears about Islam, and they can go back to the mall.

It is best to view the presence of an Islamic institution as one would view a malignancy.

Gloria Stewart on May 14, 2012 at 1:45 pm

There’s no really good answer for education, since political correctness and anti-Americanism have permeated education as a whole, whether pubic or private, charter schools, elite schools or public taxpayer-funded schools.

Years ago, public schools were an ideal mode of education, since they helped assimilate newcomers to the American way of life. But that started changing during the 1920s with the liberals’ “Progressive Education” theories, and by the late 60s, public schools were no longer concerned, in general, with assimilating new arrivals. Diversity and antiwar action had won, and with it, the dismembering of the United States’ homogeneity.

The developments in this post are disturbing, and I agree with the post — but I don’t think that either charter schools, public schools or elite schools can improve without a political awakening in this country. Unfortunately, the chances of such an awakening are remote, so things will get worse and worse except for the fortunate few who can go to non-Muslim religious schools that are still trying to educate people to now-forgotten American ideals, or those few elite schools that are trying to do the same.

BTW, Cranbrook passed into the realm of PC decades ago, as can be seen by the disoriented graduates who are conducting the latest slanders against Romney (not that I support him, but he’s still being slandered).

Little Al on May 14, 2012 at 1:54 pm

All this time the conservatives & the LSM is in favor of government money funding religion in these charter schools. The ACLU is deafeningly silent which means they are ok with it for muz’s but not for other relgious schools. Yeah we’re seeing this, watching, and waiting.

jake49 on May 14, 2012 at 2:04 pm

I disagree with the underlying premise that charter schools are somehow bad. If there are visas being given out for jobs that could be filled here, that’s a problem entirely unconnected from the ideal of charter schools. If there is radicalism being taught, that too is a problem entirely separate from charter schools. All religions including Islam should be allowed to offer charter schools, and all other laws should be observed as well.

TOA: Um, check the charter school laws in any state that has them. They are public schools and are NOT allowed to be “offered” by any “religion.” It violates the law. The problem is that the law isn’t being enforced because there is little oversight and enforcement of charter schools and difficult to have such. No religion should be albe to offer a charter school. Again, it’s illegal. DS

This is why I can’t watch 59.5 Minutes. Leslie Stalled in particular is an addled brained old broad who typically gives Islam a pass while denegrating Christians and Jews. White wash indeed. To Muslim American. Like both SeanR and Worry01 both said. You really need to read Debbie’s post. At no time did she promote any hatred. She kicked the facts to ya like she always does. If you can’t handle the truth then take your butt back to the HuffandPuffington Post.

Ken b on May 14, 2012 at 3:23 pm

Debbie is right. It was libertarians and conservatives, not liberals, who were at the forefront of the charter school as well as voucher campaigns. They relentlessly touted these nostrums as parental “choice,” assuming that parents, unlike public school bureaucrats, inevitably know what’s right for pupils. Well, now we are seeing part of the harvest of such advocacy: Muslim educators operating with minimal public oversight, inculcating Islam on the sly to their young charges.

Ground Zero for the movement was Wisconsin. In the early Nineties, a fanatic black state legislator from Milwaukee named Annette “Polly” Williams bullied everyone within screaming distance to provide public funding for black separatist (“choice”) schools. Every bigwig on the Right lined up to swoon over this corrupt, white-hating nut case, seeing her crusade as a fusion of civil rights and free markets. Jack Kemp, William Bennett, Ed Crane, Walter Williams and Clint Bolick, among others, hailed her as Reagan II. Aided by pro bono advice from conservative nonprofit legal groups, she took her voucher case to the Wisconsin Supreme Court and won. Education has never been the same since.

Seek on May 14, 2012 at 5:19 pm

The Gulen madrassas should have their charter school certification revoked and be immediately defunded. Let the Muslim communities pay for the them, just as other religious institutions privately pay for their schools. It’s bad enough that, for decades, the American taxpayer has been paying for the health, education and welfare for illegal aliens; it really hurts to think about paying for the indoctrination of students with a murderous, anti-American, anti-Western Civilization ideology.

nailsagainsttheboard on May 14, 2012 at 9:52 pm

On the school issue, I happen to be against public schools, but as far as private schools go, I prefer that they not be religious a.k.a. parochial schools. As it is, the purpose of schools is to educate – particularly about subject material that parents may normally be inadequate to address. Teaching the kids values is a job of parents, given that each kid has a unique value system based on his or her family, and schools can’t possibly be expected to teach those, which often may be at odds w/ the beliefs of parents, even in the cases that parents send the kid to a religious school whose beliefs they share.

The Conservatives have it right that public schools have a dim record when it comes to educational standards and that US kids are way behind kids in most advanced nations on subjects like Math, Geography, etc. One thing they don’t mention, but which I think is a problem, is the disparity in standards b/w school districts, which results in artificially high property rates. I know it’s the market talking, but I see no reason why the disparity b/w school standards should be a reason for some neighborhoods having property valuations in the millions, and others struggling to retain their value.

I’m probably going to be alone in this view, but I actually question the idea of the very concept of schools that are not directly paid by the parents, but instead, by government, and then parents being stuck w/ whatever schools in their school districts they can send their kids to. As Gary Becker once noted, there are 4 scenarios in which one can pay for something:

1. One spends one’s own money on oneself
2. One spends one’s own money on someone else
3. One spends someone else’s money on oneself
4. One spends someone else’s money on someone else

Scenario #1 is the optimal solution – one takes good care of oneself, while being thrifty about one’s spending. In scenario #2, one takes minimal care of someone else, but is very careful about how the money is spend. In scenario #3, one splurges the money on oneself, taking good care of oneself but caring little about the money. And in scenario #4, the worst of all combinations happens – one takes minimal care of someone else, while splurging the money.

Public schools, like all government undertakings, is a case of scenario #4, where one cares little about the quality of service, while splurging as much as possible. It’s therefore the worst model for education. Unfortunately, the Conservatives, whose grassroots support is mainly the religious crowd, decides to press for their pet issue – charter schools. And since, in the eyes of too many conservatives (not on this website, but definitely elsewhere), any religious group is better than those Atheistic Liberals, they happily take the side of all religious groups – including Muslims – on this issue.

Note that most of what I wrote above seems tangential to the issue @ hand. That’s b’cos even if one actually supported religious schools, Muslims don’t deserve to have theirs. Simple reason – Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Taoists, Shintos, Rastafarians, Mormons and others do not, in their schools, preach hatred of others. They are only too happy to impart their values, combined w/ the necessary skills to succeed in their careers. But in case of Muslims, since their schools are indoctrination centers of jihad, and pretty worthless in terms of education (their main achievements normally are teaching rote learning how to recite the quran), allowing them to operate their schools is an exercise in sociopathic activity.

Infidel on May 15, 2012 at 1:50 am

This is no doubt a possible landmine and you are correct IF like in many Dearborn Michigan schools Israel does not exist on the map. I just thought of it, that could be the litmus test. Simply go into all their schools and check their geography maps.
Did anyone ever think of that?
Meanwhile, the results are impressive, you have to admit that much. Another verification of a problem is interviewing graduates and students on their opinion about Israel.
While I too reserve a knee jerk experienced distrust for anyone prefessing to be Islamic I caution not to sink to the level of the racist, anti-seimitic enemy.
Remember the White Rose society? In any case where do you think all the black anti-semitism comes from? Schools and Chrches where Israel is compared to South Africa, thats where.
In this case these schools MAY ironically be an improvement.

Matt on May 19, 2012 at 3:56 am

this is interesting. I am currently a teacher at a ‘turkish’ school in Colorado. I have to say, it is very much part of the Gulen Movement. All but 2 administrators are Turkish, most of the secondary teachers are Turkish, in which the kids complain all the time they can’t understand them. I am leaving because most of the people who run this school have little to no experience with children and what’s best for children and the academics. This school puts sooo much effort into proving they are not affiliated with the Gulen, and they put on a great show, i have to admit because i fell for it in agreeing to teach at this school in order to help the test scores improve. but after seeing on the “undercover” things that i see, as only really employees may see, I have been blind to the fact of what’s really going on here. The people who run this school treat the teachers, parents, and even kids differently compared to the way they treat their own people and culture at the school. In fact, many teachers and parents are bullied in to doing certain things, and if you disagree, you will lose your job or be asked to take your kid out of the school. I had brought up many concerns to a “observer” who came to our school to “see how things are going”. This man happened to be Turkish as well, and told us all teachers that what we said to him would be confidential. (The principal, turkish too, said all info would be confidential). Long story short, after expressing my many concerns for the school in confidentiality, I was then later told I am a very negative teacher based on what was said at that meeting. All the info and notes from everything the teachers had said was passed on to the Turkish administrators to which was then put in our “reviews”. This is just one example of the many disheartening things that has been happening at this Turkish school. Many of the Turkish teachers get the higher bonus’ and rewards over the American teachers at this school as well. I am so glad I am leaving but being an “insider” I am trying to put the word out on these schools. They are very slick in what they are doing and repeatly deny any affiliation with the Gulen Movement.

Actually, I am so confused about gulen charter schools after I watch the 60 minutes in cbs news. I started to search online. I am reading the blogs to find out the truth. I cannot decide very well. I am watching youtube videos. For instance, there is a gulen charter schools blog like: http://horizonparents.blogspot.com/

It gives positive informations about them. What do you think? Direct me please ! I am so confused.

I have 2 kids at a charter school that is run by turkish americans, and I can tell you there is NO hate preached, NO Islam taught, and it is a fabulous school that reminds me of my own small public school in the 80s. The dress code is strict (prevents kids’ attention on boobs and butts hanging out), the teachers are great and they all work hard to give the kids extra attention and even tutor them after school if they need it. The mix of kids there is wonderful and very diverse. There is focus on academics and not athletics, which is what I want. People need to know what they are talking about before developing an opinion of what goes on in any particular school or group of schools. Charter schools are not all alike and cannot be condemned or applauded as one group just like regular public schools can’t.

Don’t believe everything you hear about the charter schools run by turkish americans or anyone else. Go to the school you are interested in and take a tour and talk to the staff and students. We love our charter school.

Did you notice you have a Pro Charter school ad on your anti charter school blog? Hypocrisy? Maybe you should get rid of the Yes on I1240 ad if you want us to take you seriously.

I contribute to the debate with one of the example from gulen charter schools. this is charter schools management company in concept schools. they are so-called gulen charter schools. they keep saying lies in their official blog. search “concept schools” on google.
