Go To College All Over Again: Schlussel Site on ASU Course Syllabus

By Debbie Schlussel
Earlier this week, there was a lot of traffic to this site from Arizona State University. To my surprise, this site and another were assigned reading for a ASU’s English 216: Persuasive Writing on Public Issues, taught by Ryan Muckerheide.
This was the assignment on Monday, February 2nd:

Read and analyze a recent post from one of the following blogs, and post your response on your blog. The post you review must be substantive (at least a couple of hundred words), and you should also read the comments to see how other readers view the post.
* Daily Kos (liberal)
* Huffington Post (liberal)
* Ace of Spades HQ (conservative)
* Debbie Schlussel (Conservative radio host)
Read in Envision, 30-49
Discuss logos, ethos, pathos in class

Glad to see conservatives are getting equal time. Here’s hoping they get equal chances at good grades, without regurgitating the usually required liberalism.
I guess I should lay off telling any blonde ASU co-ed jokes . . . until next semester.

Is it coincidental that Daily Kos is at the top of the list and your conservative site is last? I doubt it.

That’s what they call a LIBERAL education in my neck of the woods.

The professor must be conservative. I always knew my conservative professors in education(very few) because they would assign conservative authors and traditionalists to study as well as liberal authors. Many students when exposed to conservative opinions, such as by Diane Ravitch, E.D Hirsch, Jr., Sol Stern, Frederick Hess, and others would be swayed by their correct opinions on education and then notice the problems with liberal education theorists.
Balance in the classroom is not something liberal professors desire. The liberal professors (many of them) would ban any conservative authors, hoping no students would be exposed to them. Because this professor at ASU has a balance, I believe he must be conservative.

I think you might have a fair shot from the kids. Arizona is a Republican state, many ex-Californians who couldn’t take Californication any more. Hope you get positive feedback. Maybe they can get you and Arianna in the same room, the mother of all debates.

If you really want to sink your teeth into a liberally perverted curriculum, I suggest you take a look at this Rutgers Professor and Islamic “extremist” apologist;
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1418765876869943316
It is a video of Robert Trivers, winner of the prestigious Crawfoord Prize for a theory vehemently disputed by real scientists. (Note: Such prizes are meaningless…see 1994 Nobel peace prize recipient and dead terrorist Yassir Arafat).
Note: this is the same man that clashed with Alan Dershowitz and was barred from speaking at Harvard after directing threatening editorials towards Mr. Dershowitz through the Wall Street Journal. Rutgers continues to defend his right to tenured “academic” freedom of speech.

Debbie, I smell a trap. The left wing professors always act evenhanded at first and try to smoke out the Republican kids. Then once they are known, these kids get the bad grades. I ususally made a point of regurgitating whatever the professor thought, thereby making myself bullet proof.

Anon, if you are going to be praised or vilified, shouldn’t it be for what you are?

Both of you guys could be right. Unless we are
part of the class we can’t know.
What gives me caution is that it is an English
class. Do the students have enough of a historical
perspective to make good judgments or be easily
swayed by “touchy feely” opinions. Are they
mature enough to make decisions ? Not so sure !
But it is better than the ususal crap.

Is there a way to link to the students’ blogs where they posted their responses? I’d love to read them, even the ones that reviewed Kos and Huffington!
