Meet the Newt-Bashing, Anti-Israel Islam-Pimpers for Romney

By Debbie Schlussel

Over the last week, the Romney campaign has been appealing to Jewish Republicans by farming out Romney moderates with Jewish heritage, including one-term U.S. Senator Norm Coleman (who recently touted the continuation of Obamacare even under a Republican administration and who partially lost his seat because he couldn’t keep his pants zipped except for when he was with his wife) and former Senator Jim Talent, who is touting the fact that he is the son of Russian Jewish immigrants, but omitting the fact that he’s now a Presbyterian with a daughter named, Chrissy.  Despite these two “beacons of Jewishness” for Romney, I’ve noticed something that isn’t being marketed to Florida’s Jewish voters:  that many of the prominent Romney endorsers–especially those bashing Newt Gingrich–are lobbyists and supporters of Islam and the Palestinians.  Some Mittwits, like John Sununu, have even gone beyond the pretense of just bashing Israel.  He openly bashed Jews, too.

Mitt Happens: Jew-Hater, Pan-Arabist John Sununu Yucks It Up w/ Pal Romney

Vin Weber & His Arab Spring BS Book Co-Authored w/ Madeleine Albright

Last week, I told you about Elliot Abrams’ fervent work for the Palestinians, to the point that he proudly attended the pro-HAMAS/Hezbollah “American Task Force on Palestine” fundraising dinner.  But it’s not just Abrams.  Here are some of the other Newt-bashing Romneyites and their frightening, um, al-credentials:

Vin Weber:  When he was in Congress, he was a staunch Newt ally and a consistent supporter of Israel against the Muslim world.  Now, long out of Congress, Weber has made a career as a highly-paid professional lobbyist for Muslims and Arab Muslim nations (and Freddie Mac) . . . and speaking out against Israel.  Most of the countries from which he now takes oodles of money abide by the Arab boycott of Israel, including the United Arab Emirates, which pays him handsomely and which enabled the 9/11 hijackers. As the co-author of a Council on Foreign Relations book with Albright, In Support of Arab Democracy: Why and How (Council on Foreign Relations (Council on Foreign Relations Press)), Weber is a leading advocate of the Arab Spring/Arab democracy BS which brought the Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Qaeda, and Hezbollah to power in Egypt, Libya, and Lebanon, respectively. (But he’s probably not an advocate of democracy in the Emirates because, then, who would pay him hundreds of thousands of dollars in lobbying fees to live his luxe lifestyle?) As a Co-Chair of the National Endowment for Democracy (with Albright), he made the decision to spend your tax money to send the Ground Zero mosque imam and many other Muslim extremists on “goodwill” trips to the Middle East promoting “democracy.”

Even worse, Weber now serves– along with the forces behind the Ground Zero mosque and leaders of several Muslim Brotherhood groups including ISNA–on the board of the U.S.-Muslim Engagement Project, the declared aim of which is to change the attitudes of the American public toward Islam and change American foreign policy (which is always code for “let’s stop America from supporting Israel and start supporting the Muslim nations against her”).  From the organization’s own website:

The project’s goals are to:

  • create a coherent, broad-based and bipartisan strategy and set of recommendations to improve relations between the U.S. and the Muslim world; and
  • communicate and advocate this strategy in ways that shift U.S. public opinion and contribute to changes in U.S. policies, and public and private action.

Good to know that he’s supporting Mitt Romney and attacking Newt Gingrich. Tells me a lot, as in, I should do the exact opposite.  He’s doing Romney’s bidding now.  He’ll get Romney’s ear and attention in the White House.  You want that?

In case you needed more, Weber works on many pro-Muslim projects with ugly friend of Arafat, Madeleine Albright. He’s also lobbied for–and obtained–repeated arms deals for Muslim nations, arms deals for weapons that can, and likely will, be used against Israel.

John Sununu, Sr.:  As governor of New Hampshire, he was the only one out of 50 governors of U.S. states who refused to call for repeal of the “Zionism is Racism” UN General Assembly Resolution 3379. He also issued an anti-Israel proclamation regarding the U.S.S. Liberty (the real story about which is in an excellent book, “The Liberty Incident: The 1967 Attack on the U.S. Navy Spy Ship“). When George H.W. Bush picked him as his Chief of Staff, Sununu pretended that he was a “Lebanese Arab.”  But, after that, he and his anti-Israel son  and U.S. Senator openly admitted they were actually Palestinian Arabs.  Once in the Bush White House, Sununu repeatedly spoke out against Israel and in favor of the Palestinians.  He also attacked Jews specifically in his call for “evenhandedness” (which is also always code for “let’s bash Israel and side with the Muslims”).

A column by the late Jewish conservative, William Safire, written during the Bush-the-father era in 1991, captures only a tad of the Sununu hatred for Jews and Israel. Safire had written a previous column denouncing Sununu as a crappy Bush Chief of Staff. He didn’t mention the Israel stuff or anything else, but the Jew-baiting Sununu got his pro-HAMAS friend, Robert Novak, to write a column saying that Sununu was attacked only because he’s an Arab and anti-Israel.  Ask yourself if you want for Prez, a guy who will listen to this Jew-hater.

After leaving the Bush White House and outing himself as a Palestinian, Sununu repeatedly did the Muslim lecture circuit across America, spouting more of that.  You think Newt Gingrich’s strong support for Israel isn’t a factor–THE factor–in his Gingrich-bashing and Mitt support?  Think again.

Then, there is Elliot Abrams, the Bush point man behind the first ever declaration by a U.S. President in support of a Palestinian State and the man behind billions of dollars going to the Palestinians to bail out their mortgages, etc. We know where none of this money really went, and you can bet some of it was very “explosive” spending.

And there are other such anti-Israel, pan-Muslim Romney pimps. These are just three examples. Ask yourself if these are the kind of people you want to have influence in a Republican White House. Mitt happens.

I certainly don’t. In a Newt White House, John Sununu, Vin Weber, and Elliot Abrams will be persona non grata, at least at this point.

I’m troubled by Gingrich’s tight friendship with Grover Norquist, but it’s apparently not as tight as it once was. I haven’t heard a peep out of Jihad Grover since Newt Gingrich correctly identified the Palestinians as an “invented people.”

And my guess is that Grover doesn’t want Newt in the White House, these days.

“Mitt happens.” LOL.

John Sununu, by the way, for decades has been known as an ethnic Arab; it hardly was a secret during his years serving at the pleasure of George H.W. Bush. Like Casey Kasem and former U.S. Senator James Abourezk, D-S.D., ethnic Arabs, even if Christian (which Sununu is), can’t be trusted on the Middle East. Blood is thicker than water.

S: I didn’t say otherwise. I noted that, at the time, he claimed to be Lebanese. After he left the White House, he then said he was really a Palestinian. Please re-read. And great minds think alike on Christian Arabs. I’ve made this point many times on this site over the years. George Habash, founder of the PFLP terrorist group and his deputy, Wadih Haddad, were both Christian. Some of the HAMAS terrorists released in the trade for Gilad Shalit were Christians, and Maronite Christian leader in Lebanon, Michel Aoun, is allied with Hezbollah. DS

Christian Arabs from the Copts and Eastern Orthodox sects are anti-Semitic and anti-Israel and they have participated in terrorist attacks on Jews in Israel.

Not all Arab terrorists are Muslim.

Mitt Romney is working hard to get the Jewish vote. But if they knew about the Mormon Prophet Brigham Young’s words (excerpt from my book: CAN MITT ROMNEY SERVE TWO MASTERS?) they would quickly change their minds. Book excerpt:

A Total Disdain for Jews
Deeper in this vein of prejudice, we come to the Jewish Nation; in the following passage Mormon prophet, Brigham A Young describes his view of the Jews:

“I would rather undertake to convert five thousand Lamanites [Native Americans], than to convert one of those poor miserable creatures [Jews] whose fathers killed the savior…. Yes, I would rather undertake to CONVERT THE DEVIL HIMSELF, if it were possible. …I would say, leave them, and come home, the lord does not require you to stay there, for they must suffer and be damned. …[l]eave them to live and die in their sins and ignorance. …[t]hey take pleasure in their wickedness….” (reference: Young, Brigham. Journal of Discourses. p. 143. Vol. 2.)

Jews are clearly held in low regard by one of the former Prophets and Seers of the Mormon Church. Brigham Young said that his word was to be upheld as scripture; therefore we can see the dangers in the words of a man who clearly had a heart filled with hate. Yet, in 1st John Chapter 4, verses 20-21, the Bible plainly states that we cannot love God if we hate others;

Pat on January 30, 2012 at 4:56 pm

With advisors and supporters like these, would it be too much to consider it possible that Mitt Romney is a closet anti-Semite?

Yikes I wanted to be the first to opine….. DS Rocks.

Don’t need another tool of the Arabs in the White House nor do we need another political dynasty (most you probably know that George Romney was governor of Michigan)

Jonathan E Grant on January 30, 2012 at 5:09 pm

Ms Schlussel:

Jim Talent is a member of PCA, not PCUSA. PCA split from PCUSA over the latter’s becoming liberal (politically and theologically). So, “yes, the Israel-boycotting PCUSA” with regards to Talent is incorrect and unfair. Also, while Jews are indeed sensitive to the conversion to Christianity of Jews like Talent (though I should point out that secularism is a far bigger threat to western Jewry than is conversion to Christianity … there are FAR more Charles Krauthammers than Jim Talents), the fellow was and is consistently pro-Israel in his voting record and rhetoric.

Other than your apparently believing that Talent was in PCUSA instead of PCA – or perhaps not being aware of the vast difference between the two, as PCA is considered to be an evangelical/fundamentalist group, and is the second most conservative of the Presbyterian denominations, and with the one more conservative than PCA being very tiny – I don’t see how he merits this negative scrutiny.

G: Whether or not conversion to Christianity is more of a threat to Judaism than secularism is irrelevant here. What’s relevant is that Jim Talent is misleading and a phony in the way he’s allowed the Romney campaign to present himself to Jewish audiences in Florida as the son of Russian Jewish immigrants without telling them he’s a Christian. As far as I’m concerned, that’s lying. As for the PCA, I stand corrected and have changed that. Thanks for the information. I am well-informed about Talent’s support for Israel, as my friend, Mark Strand, was his foreign policy advisor for some years. But that’s not the issue here, and, his pro-Israel stance, is contradicted by the fact that Romney also has John Sununu, Vin Weber, and Elliot Abrams as his endorsers and supporters, as well as advisors like Dan Senor, the Hezbollah-enabler I’ve written about before.

And, FYI, while it is, again, irrelevant to the article at hand, the biggest threat to Judaism is intermarriage, which is a product of secularism as is conversion to Christianity. They are simply not mutually exclusive. One begets the other. Religious Jews do not convert. Secular Jews with little or no background are the ones who convert. Again, Jim Talent is a fraud by presenting himself as the son of Jewish immigrants to Florida Jews and not telling the full story. DS

Gerald on January 30, 2012 at 5:41 pm

Charles krauthammer is not secular. He is a reasonably
Observant Jew. He attends the conservadox synagogue which I used to attend down the street from my folks. He is also extremely pro-Israel.

JEG: We used to vacation in Florida at a hotel where everyone was Orthodox and observed everything. We dined with Krauthammer’s brother and mother a few times and they told us that while they were fairly religious that Krauthammer was not religious at all. Maybe that’s changed, but I doubt it. He’s fairly secular. He also was all for removing Jews from the settlements, giving up Gaza and the West Bank, and frequently attacks the Jewish settlers. He’s one of the critics of Geert Wilders, and he constantly says the BS that most Muslims are peaceful and that the threat is Islamists, which is total fantasy. On this, I am with Gerald. DS

Jonathan e. Grant on January 30, 2012 at 5:53 pm

      Jonathan Grant:

For years I have commonly heard and read in various sources that Krauthammer was an atheist. For instance, I first heard it mentioned on a conservative talk radio show (I believe it was Wesley Pruden, though it might have been Mike Gallagher), have read references to it in print, and I saw it again when I just did an Internet search to verify it. However, as you are almost certainly more knowledgeable on the subject than I, I will not oppose your claim on that point, and instead will consider myself to be corrected. Thank you.

G: As I wrote to JEG, when my family used to vacation in Florida for Passover, we dined with Krauthammer’s brother and mother a few times and they told us that while they were fairly religious, that he (Charles Krauthammer) was not religious at all. Maybe that’s changed, but I doubt it. He’s fairly secular from what I know. And, to me, whether or not he is a religious Jew, these views are what’s problematic about him. DS

Gerald on January 30, 2012 at 5:59 pm

Geert Wilders is THE MAN. I do adore that fellow.

That is fair. If he is trying to get Jews to vote for Mitt Romney based on his Jewish heritage – an endorsement I suppose – then he should share his entire background, and his not doing so is unethical. You are right about that.

At best, Romney would be a slight upgrade over
Obama on Israel, akin to Bush, but that’s not saying much.

He projects a patronizing attitude toward Israel, such as his BS line about “not wanting to get ahead of our Israeli friends” on the issue of moving the US embassy to its rightful place in Jerusalem.

I could easily picture a President Romney using a patronizing “tough love” approach to criticizing Israeli settlements. He’ll say he’s doing it for “Israel’s own good.

As flawed as Gingrich is, he’s preferable to Romney, but Obama will rout Gingrich with the women’s vote.

Scott on January 30, 2012 at 5:52 pm

    Scott:

Be careful about this “better than Obama” stuff. I am of the opinion that Israel finds it a lot easier to oppose someone that they can depict as an enemy – and it doesn’t get any easier to paint as an enemy than Obama – than someone that for domestic and international political purposes someone that they will have to be forced to pretend is a friend (Romney, Gingrich, or any GOP elected other than Paul). Where Netanyahu has gotten a lot of mileage out of standing up to Obama (or at least pretending to), replace Obama with a Republican that will pursue basically the same policy (and they will because it is U.N., NATO and American policy and has been for 20 years) and Netanyahu will find opposing him a lot harder, just as he did with Bush.

Gerald on January 30, 2012 at 6:31 pm

      Gerald,

In my post I stated that “at best” Romney would be a slight upgrade over Obama. Most likely he would be no better and possibly worse.

However, you should be aware a second-term lame duck Obama who no longer needs Jewish support or campaign contributions could turn out to be even more hostile towards Israel than he is now.

Scott on January 31, 2012 at 1:22 am

All smart and REAL Conservatives in the know KNOW that we are down to two men to represent the GOP. Both would NOT be on the top of our lists if we had our druthers BUT it’s all we have. Smart Conservatives have to understand that NOW. 2012 is like no other election EVER.

So we have Romney or Gingrich. One has to pick…holding nose extra hard and right now I am picking Newt just to kick the hornet’s nest that is right in front of the Republican establishment. That’s saying a lot too as I have never liked Gingrich and am privy to his detracting variables. All of them.

Plus, if you’re paying attention to Romney these past three days, his canny, little strategy to make NG look like a loon is extremely off-putting. I don’t like it and it speaks to the fact that he will compromise his values and telling the truth to win. That sh** don’t fly with me.

So for right now, until the primaries are over, I believe in having these two fight it out ’til the end. Because the Establishment CANNOT tell us who to vote for. We are NOT Democrats!

That said, the girly fighting (initially started by Romney) is annoying and I wish it would STOP. It won’t (which is so sad as Obama has given us much grist for the mill). And as Rush stated today, femmy Flip McFloppney will NOT scorch earth Obama (when NO ONE deserves it more!!) the way he has with NG. That’s sick and asinine and insane!

2012 is the most important election EVER. People have to think this out. We have a very weak field and that is NOT a mistake but we gotta get Obama OUT. NOW.

And BTW, Krauthammer said something that offended me and I am NOT even Jewish. He stated that since there is a perception that the Palestinians had their land stolen from them that there NEEDS to be a solution that bows down to that lie. I was disgusted by that and hope all Israel-supporting Jews would be even more so.

Norm Coleman is a wussy ponce. Who they hell would respect that bogan after he let “Stuart Smalley” steal his seat? Yeah, the GOP need more of those kinda wimps!

Skunky on January 30, 2012 at 6:58 pm

I can buy a lottery ticket and hope to win, but it is nothing more than a hope. Buying the lottery ticket and hoping makes vastly more sense to me than supporting Newt and then hoping he can hold it together long enough to win the general election in November. He may support our positions better than Romney, but he is unelectable. There I said it.

In a race with Obama, Gingrich will not get any of the independent voters. He has a history or interpersonal problems working with others while he was the Speaker of the House and that is why they did not vote to have him continue that post. He says all the right things as a conservative, but character issues will gnaw away his credibility. I like what he stands for, but in the general election, he would get totally beaten by Obama. It’s time to recognize reality and stop dreaming of Prince Charming and settle for Romney. Reality sucks, but that is life.

fred on January 30, 2012 at 7:23 pm

Fred, what makes you think that we don’t understand Newt Gingrich will be unelectable? I have understood this this from even before he put his hat in the ring. Thing is, ROMNEY is just as unelectable…especially if he decides not to take it to Obama (which would be criminal) the way he has taken it to Gingrich. And he WON’T!

The GOP Establishment may get what they want but you should not roll over so easily. Since both are nothing to be excited for (at the end of the day) why not shake it up a bit? Especially since if Obama wins again all bets are off anyway. It’s the PEOPLE who decide not the Establishment. If the people would wise up to their power, they would give the finger to any cabal that tries to clandestinely take away our right to choose individually in lieu of a lemming corral.

Also, one can easily say that the religious Conservative base will not show up to elect Romney…especially the holy-roller Evangelicals who get all agro when it comes to Mormons. On top of that real religious Conservatives who do their homework (in lieu of going-with-the-flow) will also NOT vote for Romney because in my State he let gay-marriage win by judicial fiat and hardly stood up for abortion provisions in ROMNEYCARE as he said he would. That is something you also failed to consider. It’s gonna be tough for either of them, which is kinda annoying since Obama has been an utter destroyer.

You have a point, I am just saying perhaps you must think it out a bit more. Romney is also looking horrible by stating and promoting lies on NG. I have no problem with him attacking NG’s record BUT I don’t like the lies. If I did I reckon I would be an Obama supporter!

Maybe with all that money Mitt might get James Traficant on his payroll. Debbie of all the Conservatives out there you have pinned the tail on Romney. This guy is an Empty Suit. The debates will have two Empty Suits up there. Romney is doing the Obama Playbook. He is just saying nothing and allowing others take a stand. The MSM then carves his opponents for having convictions. So Romney saw Obama just campaign like an Empty Suit and he saw the rewards.

CaliforniaScreaming on January 30, 2012 at 7:34 pm

Yes with that said, a vote for NG is a vote for Obama. Mitt is not perfect, but I would prefer him to another 4 years of the “community organizer” from Chicago. Unfortunately, this would be the worse scenario for this country and of course for Israel as well. NG wouldn’t stand a chance against Obama. Get a clue, something is better then nothing. Vote Mitt.

I used to occasionally watch Crossfire in the early 90s, and there, Buchanan, Sununu & Novak were the conservative hosts. As a result, whenever the topic of Israel came up, I’d find myself in the unusual situation of agreeing w/ the pro-Israel Liberals rather than these 3.

CNN somehow managed to get 3 Jew baiting Conservatives to bat for the Right. The only pro-Israel Conservative there was Kate O’Beirne.

It’s sad. In 2008, Romney was the most outspoken against Islam, w/ the exception of Tancredo. This time, he’s shifted towards the Muslims, while Newt has shifted away. Otoh, if Newt wins the nomination, the Dems would have a field day w/ him. And while Norquist may have abandoned him for Perry, I wonder whether Norquest has gone w/ Perry in returning to Newt’s fold.

I’m still backing Santorum until he drops out, and then, I’ll just wait for whoever the nominee is against Obama. Despite everything pointed out above, I do believe that either Newt or Mitt would be better than McCain.

Infidel on January 31, 2012 at 7:11 am

One thing I really don’t like about Romney is his willingness to experiment on the entire state of Mass. with his Romneycare. What makes anybody think that he won’t try to experiment on the nation as a whole? I’m not talking just about health care, there are many other ways to cripple this great country of ours.

Jarhead on January 31, 2012 at 10:45 am

I agree with you Skunky that both Romney and Gingrich have their problems but what are we going to do? This great nation that I gave 20 yrs of my life for can not survive another 4 years of the first gungan presidency. I also wish that the petty fighting would stop and that the two would stick to the issues. It’s like they are just giving oblamo more material to work with. We all know that jar jar obinks can’t seriously run on his crapsandwich of a record. It looks like I’ll be holding my nose again while voting because I will never and I mean NEVER vote demoncrat.

ken b on January 31, 2012 at 11:44 am

I, for one, am a bit tired of the GOP elders engaging me in a nasty game of chicken every four years, i.e., selecting someone who is unsatisfactory in EVERY way and then saying hey, it’s either him or the Dem.

One response to an iterated chicken game is to refuse to comply one time so that one is not put into another chicken game next time.

I will not vote for Mitt. Forget it. My time horizon is greater than one election season.

adam & skzion

But this is what they did 4 years ago as well – put a Dem clone by the name of John McClain as the candidate and say that it’s either him or Obama. With him as the candidate, it’s little wonder that Obama won – why vote for a GOP Liberal when you can vote for the real deal in the Democrat party?

This time, you have a mediocre former governor of MA pitted against a largely discredited former speaker, whose legacy was the same type of corruption he campaigned against. The Newt of today simply ain’t the Newt of 1994, and w/ all the compromises he made w/ Clinton, there’s nothing to assure that he won’t be that way this time either. Moreover, the GOP ain’t gonna get such a supermajority in the senate that will make McCain, Grammnesty and other GOP Liberals irrelevant.

But honestly, my problem is w/ people simply voting for one of the top 2, instead of keeping their options open and voting for Santorum. When he drops out, he drops out, but as long as he’s in the race, be prepared to vote for him. On one hand, people won’t vote for candidates #3 & beyond, but on the other, they want to abstain from voting come the general elections? I agree w/ Scott above that if re-elected, Obama will be even more pro-Muslim than he’s even now, which is why it’s important to defeat him in this election.

I can’t see Newt, w/ both his record in Congress, as well as his character flaws, stand up against Obama – the latter will look like a saint in contrast, and can take on him using the family values card. Contrary to what some said above, I think Newt can win independents, but is less likely to succeed w/ moderates. But his test here is different – in Congress, he initially did a good job w/ welfare reforms and taxes, but now, his challenge is to create a perception that he can pull the US economy out of the mess it’s in, which would be impossible, given the media scrutiny on anything he proposes.

Infidel on January 31, 2012 at 3:38 pm

1 week from now is the Minnesota GOP caucus. I’m going to my local caucus, and will vote for Cravaack, if necessary, and Santorum. That’s all. We’ll see from there.

There is no way Romney could be any more anti-semitic than the schmuck in the White House today. Newt Gingrich has turned into a bombastic liar, flailing around for a punch to land on Romney. The lesser evil of those two is Romney, with or without his “anti-Israel” advisors.
