They Said What?!: Observations from the Politically Correct Golden Globes PreGame Show

By Debbie Schlussel

If you are a married guy in America (or living with a girlfriend), your main TV is probably slavishly tuned right now to NBC’s “Golden Globes” awards show and red carpet pre-show.  I, myself was watching “60 Minutes” (more about that in another post), but switched to NBC during the commercials, and I saw some kinda funny uber-politically correct and not so politically correct stuff that begs to be written about here:

Awkward: Jeannie Mai Tells Melissa McCarthy About Her Abs & “Stunning” Dress

Awkward Politically Correct Golden Globes Moment #1:  Some Asian chick, named Jeannie Mai (who I understand is a make-up artist and contributor to NBC’s “Today” show), is a co-host of the Globes red carpet pre-game deal.  I mention her nationality only because I didn’t know who she was, never heard of her before, and her razor-thin slim Asian build is relevant to what happened.  I flipped to NBC and caught Mai interviewing the morbidly obese actress, Melissa McCarthy, wearing some sort of dark-colored sack with some beading.  McCarthy, shown with her husband and Mai, is larger than both Mai and hubby put together times two.  Mai tells her how beautiful she looks and how “everyone’s dying to know who you’re wearing.  That dress is stunning.”  Um, who is she kidding? No one is dying to know what she’s wearing, except to know how many acres of tarp it took to make the hideous jumbo tent.  And the dress ain’t stunning, unless the word “stunning” suddenly got a new meaning  . . . or today is “Opposite Day,” and I didn’t get the memo.  Please stop BS’ing us and the fat chick, who knows it’s BS, and so do we.  Political correctness is sometimes the best form of vomit-inducement.  And definitely the richest form of bull-dung. Not saying we should make the fat lady feel bad, but don’t pretend this tarp tent is “stunning.”  It ain’t.  No one is saying, “Gotta have that.”

Awkward Un-Politically Correct Golden Globes Moment #2:  Still on the petite Asian chick, Mai, interviewing the fat chick, McCarthy.  Mai (again, she’s your stereotypically razor-thin Asian chick) tells McCarthy (again, she’s like 300 pounds and it shows), “I have such great abs because of you.”  Uggghhh.  Awkward.  Somebody was born without an edit button. If you’re that thin and you know it, don’t rub it in to the morbidly obese fat lady, and don’t brag on TV to the rest of the world about your abs.  But, wait, it gets worse.  She explains why she has the “great abs”:  “I laughed so hard from watching ‘Bridesmaid’ that it gave me such great abs.”  Um, somebody at NBC needs to do a better job of casting red carpet show hosts.  Rude and insensitive. The insults are supposed to start after Ricky Gervais takes the stage.  Not before.  Again, don’t pretend that “fat is beautiful,” but don’t make the woman feel bad, either.  Geez.

Annoying Golden Globes Moment #3:  A L’Oreal cosmetics ad starring Jennifer Lopez comes on the screen at about 7:54.  The commercial begins with a subtitle, “100% Puerto Rican.”  Huh?  And I thought she was American.  Gee, do you ever see cosmetics ads that say, “100% White,”  “100% Black,” or “100% Lesbian” (that’s the Queen Latifah Cover Girl ad)?  It’s absurd.  And offensive.  Still waiting for the “100% Irish” and “100% Jewish” cosmetics ads.  Thanks, L’Oreal, for the La Raza identity politics cosmetics ad.

I agree that it’s dishonest and PC to tell a fat person they look sexy. But are you suggesting that we should insult them about their weight instead?

M: Clearly you did not read the entire entry. Did you read item #2, in which I’m disgusted that the thin Asian chick talks about her “great abs” to the fat lady? RIF–Reading Is Fundamental. I’m not at all for insulting or embarrassing people, but not for BS’ing them (and everyone else watching on TV), either. DS

Debbie, you have to notice that way back in the old days prior to the 20th century, there were numerous drawings and paintings of plus-size women being shown, etc. To be honest with you Debbie and everybody else, I happen to be attracted to plus-size women than I am to skin-and-bones women. I know at the sametime DS that you’re NOT mocking and ridiculing Melissa McCarthy because of her weight, I think Ms. McCarthy is a beautiful looking woman despite her size.

You have to also notice Debbie that ever since the 1920s, the fashion establishment has been doing this propaganda to the public by saying that “only thin women are beautiful, etc.” And NOT all men are attracted to women who are thin-slender, to me the image beauty of a woman is either voluptous, full-figured, BBW, few-extra-pounds, or average, it’s NOT what the fashion establishment has been indoctrinating the public by claiming that women with the body of a 8 year old child is beautiful, to me that’s gross, as I say, I prefer a woman with some meat on her body!

“A nation is defined by its borders, language & culture!”

SR: I happen to think the Asian chick is too thin, though her size is probably hereditary (she is half Chinese, half Vietnamese). But the fat chick is way too fat. It’s not healthy. I don’t think anyone should have embarrassed her for her size or called her out about it. But it is just BS to say anyone cared about the tent and what designer fleet pieced it together in an airport hangar. On the other hand, as I noted, it was just tasteless and insulting for the Asian chick to tell the fat chick about her abs. Barf-inducing.

Regarding previous times and centuries, yes, some glorified the Ruben-esque woman, but that was because they did not know what we know now–that medically, you are risking early death, not to mention heart disease, diabetes, and other miserable conditions while you’re alive, when you’re that big. It’s healthier to be a 2-pack a day smoker and thin than to be that big, studies and medical experts say.

For Melissa McCarthy, being large is a big part of her act, and she would be a nobody if she were just another thin actress. So she is not interested in being BS’ed about her size, I’d imagine. She has willingly traded health for fame and money. DS

Sean R. on January 15, 2012 at 9:04 pm

“that medically, you are risking early death, not to mention heart disease, diabetes, and other miserable conditions while you’re alive, when you’re that big.”

You have a good to valid point in that statement DS, don’t get me wrong, I was not saying overweight is healthy, I know til a degree if you’re at a certain size you may have health problems. Let’s not also forget Debbie that some folks who are thin have diabetes (depends on some stuff they eat, etc.)as well, it’s not just limited to overweight people.

And you are spot on in the sentiment that you responded to my message DS, and here we go:

“I don’t think anyone should have embarrassed her for her size or called her out about it.”

Couldn’t agree with you, I to thought it was a little tasteless for Jeannie Mai to quasi mock Melissa McCarthy because of her physical size. And if I were Melissa McCarthy’s husband, I would’ve been a little angry at Jeannie Mai for mocking McCarthy’s weight, and many women who are the exact same size as Melissa McCarthy are pretty sensitive about folks mentioning their weight to them.

“A nation is defined by its borders, language & culture!”

I am sick and tired of being told and forced in my face that any woman that looks like Jeannie Mai is somehow the standard of beauty and if she gain just one little pound then she’s somehow FAT!!

There’s a difference between thick and fat on a woman’s body, and BTW there are some chubby women out there who are damn hot looking too. You know, “she’s fat in the right places” and you know what I mean.

Also BTW, not all Asian women are razor thin. Some google researching can prove that.

But yeah, Jeannie Mai is a self obsessed douchebag. She needs to hit up a buffet sometime.

    Squirrel3D on January 16, 2012 at 10:34 am

That’s hilarious- the little Asian six-pack laughing at a big fat white kegger at the golden globulins. The self indulgence of these people is pathetic.

I literally laughed out loud. Thanks again, Debbie, for telling it like it is. Everyone is thinking the same thing, but people are too afraid to say it out loud. You do, and that’s why we love you.

Yes, I am married, and the Golden Globes are on (and I am not referring to Sofia’s Vergara’s breasts).

You are obviously not channeling a man when you say the Asian woman may be too thin. In a man’s world, no woman is ever too thin.

Just joking Deb.

Jonathan E. Grant on January 15, 2012 at 10:12 pm

Communist and Traitor Jane Fondle’s presence was the most offensive person there, just by her presence. It shows the lack of patriotism in the entertainment industry that this woman, who posed behind an anti-aircraft gun in Hanoi, still gets kudos.

My mother’s cousin, Louis Abrams, was shot down over Vietnam. MIA/KIA. Jane Fonda GFY.

Jonathan E. Grant on January 15, 2012 at 11:14 pm

DS, I think you hit it in just the right measure with Melissa McCarthy.

And as far as Jeannie Mai, you are spot on about HER too without even knowing her. She did/does a show on “What Not To Wear” and I made sure NEVER to watch it because she is a snarky and condescending twit (Aussies and Brits change the proper letter in the word before the parenthesis and you’ll know the REAL word I wanna use) who thinks her fashion sense is better than anyone else’s. It’s NOT. I’d never listen to a snobby nob like that tell me what to wear and NOT to wear.

And you indeed were correct when you smelled her being soooooo (un)earnest in her praises to MM and I am glad you called her on it. She was being as real as all the overly botoxed faces at that stupid event.

I hate phonies. And Hollywood is lousy with them!

Skunky on January 15, 2012 at 11:28 pm

Oh and as someone of Mexican descent, saying that you’re “100% Puerto Rican” is NOTHING to brag about. I would embarrassed to be Puerto Rican because the image is hardly “chic”. Just saying.

JLo is kinda pathetic anyway (which is a shame because she is so beautiful). She is “dating” one of her boy-toy dancers (who is not even good-looking…but then again her husband isn’t either) and has to pay him. Honest whoring in 2012 (but really, it should be the other way around).

And NO, only dumb chicks think that dating someone 60 years younger is sexy. It’s not, it’s sad and pathetic. And what a good role model for her twins. Women get more and more disgusting in lieu of getting more and more intelligent. Let’s hear it for girl power!/

Debbie, H. and I watched “Zombieland” tonite instead of the GG’s. We both enjoy the Zombie genre, eating snacks and staying warm. Our dislikes include left wing womyn, lesbians who aren’t into guys, and automated phone calls about overdue library books. Debbie, given your rightful focus on other chicks’ size, H. and I ask that you please email us your picture(s) so we can put your comments into their proper context.

I don’t watch award shows, but while flipping through the dial, I did happen to catch some some guy interviewing Elton John about some “Best Song” award he was up for in which he said something to the effect of, “I don’t know if I’m going to win, but I’m sure there’s no f*ckin’ way Madonna is going to” (they had to bleep him, but his lips were easily readable). Anyhow, what do I find on my Yahoo homepage later that evening? Apparently poor Sir Elton had to eat his words. That must’ve been akward.

Irving on January 16, 2012 at 3:47 am

I did think that Mai’s mockery was a bit much. We could make jokes about anorexic asian girls, but that would be just as callous. I am into twigs or the genuinely porcine.

Pure Asian junk chatter. Jeannie Mai’s rude comments are pure Asian dumbass behavior. I live in Frisco, many Asians are here, and most of them talk like this. They are competitive aggressive robots. It’s Asia Inc. Mai felt self-conscious next to McCarthy and resolved her anxiety the wrong way. I could list so many insulting remarks I have experienced from Asians. Hopefully they insult each other the same way. This has nothing to do with political correctness. Thanks for the post.

Tom in SF on January 16, 2012 at 8:42 am

“Mai felt self-conscious next to McCarthy and resolved her anxiety the wrong way.”

Tom in SF: BINGO! Perfect and pithy. And it ALWAYS says something about the person WITH the anxiety than the person it is aimed at. Let’s face it…in this narcissistic society NOBODY cares about someone elses “health”. The reality is either someone doesn’t like to look at a fat person OR as you so succinctly said, she resolved HER anxiety the wrong way. Summed up in one sentence. Bravo!

Skunky on January 16, 2012 at 9:10 am

That’s what I want in my political commentators! Making fun of fat people! Truly, the writings of a great authoress here. Your mocking of a chubby woman has shown me the truth of the Left.

TheDarkEricDraven on January 16, 2012 at 9:29 am

Did you actually read the article that Debbie posted? That might have helped you come up with a semi-intelligent response. Debbie was actually calling Mai out her taunting McCarthy. As it stands, you sound like someone who escaped from their caregiver.

TheDarkEricDraven on January 16, 2012 at 10:54 am

EricDraven, did you actually read the ENTIRE article word for word from top to bottom? If you’d read the whole article you wouldn’t have semi demagoguged Ms. Schlussel’s statements, and nowhere in this article Debbie made fun of Melissa McCarthy’s physical weight, if godforbid she did something like that, I’d disagree with her and call her out on it, but DS NEVER said such stuff.

Debbie was calling out and being pretty critical on Jeannie Mai for mocking Ms. McCarthy’s weight, that’s what happend. Miranda Rose Smith, you’re right, the anorexic look is also unhealthy, NOT just the obese look, and at my message from 9 pm last night, I’ve mentioned that the fashion establishment has been indoctrinating the public for nearly 100 years on women with anorexic look is beautiful (to me it’s disgusting looking).

And Squirrel3D, I couldn’t agree with you anymore bro, there are tons of plus-size/curvy women who are very attracting looking, and I’m to am sick and tired of the fashion establishment pushing and propagandizing of “woman with the body of a little children is beautiful, etc.”. The only men who are attracted to women with anorexic looks are “metro-sexual guys” and “LGBT” guys (for the record I am NOT anti-LGBT people, I get along well with folks who are of the LGBT catagory)!

Sean, I hear ya on the LBGT. The Liberals on here and WWW wide ALWAYS think just because you don’t bow down to them on all their issues that we are anti-gay. I always say they WISH all the real anti-gay peeps were as “anti-gay” as me. There would be no homophobia then and especially on THIS MLK day, they would be judged by the content of their character (or their desire to tear down society norms) and NOT their sexual orientation. You disagree with them on one thing or don’t buy into their AGENDA and you’re an instant homophobe. What a joke.

Squirrel, you are spot on about Jeannie Mai. A terrible personality and anyone who turns into her crap show will see it asap.

I watch parts of the GG show and I was disappointed that Gervais didn’t issue the insults as he did last year (maybe I missed them). It’s refreshing to see the Hollywood prima donnas insulted once in a while.

Concerned Citizen on January 16, 2012 at 10:30 am

Actually that “Asian” chick should eat more, she is just terribly anemic looking and morbidly thin, and why wasn’t McCarthy labeled “some Irish chick named Melissa…” (and I don’t know if she indeed is). As for the L’Oreal commercial two things: That is a French owned company and I take it there aren’t many “Puerto Ricans” living in France; as for the U.S. maybe they wanted to clarify to those that believe that any “Hispanic” is just another “Messican” and that they all speak “Messican” not “American”. Unfortunately those are all labels that the WASPS generate.

BroMan on January 16, 2012 at 11:38 am

That asian chick can lie. She laughed during bridesmaids? That movie was horrible. So horrible that the star doesn’t want to do the sequel horrible.

Ender on January 16, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Update! Apparently music’s reigning queens of the 70s and 80s (respectively) won’t give it a rest:

http://omg.yahoo.com/news/elton-johns-husband-david-furnish-slam-madonnas-embarrassing-152949613.html

After reading this article, I did a search of this site’s archives. Debbie apparently didn’t even bother reviewing either of the two films they are catfighting over, “W.E.” and “Gnomeo & Juliet.” Anyhow, I just checked out the two songs on YouTube, and they are both rather pedestrian offerings. Choosing one over the other is a bit arbitrary. As a matter of fact, the Madonna tune even sounds like a typical Elton John effort, circa late 1980s.

I: “W.E.” was not yet screened for us in Detroit. The “Gnomeo & Juliet” screening, as I recall, was on the Jewish Sabbath, so I could not see it. DS

Irving on January 16, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Irving, I don’t think her movie is released yet…but I am so looking forward to DS’ review.

That story was funny. Wonder how anyone can get so worked up about a stupid GG Award. And Elton John’s significant other was right on about her narcissism. But that should be so well know by anyone who knows that tired, old hag from the 80’s.

What a piece of work she is. I have jettisoned every narcissist in my life and they were all TOO MUCH. I can’t even imagine having to deal with a FAMOUS narcissist (Madonna and Courtney Love come to mind). I just couldn’t do it and would not even try.

Since the old, pillow-faced hag came on the scene I have marveled at ANYONE who would think the skank has a kind bone in her body. Guess that’s how popularity works…something I never had any interest in.

Skunky on January 16, 2012 at 1:55 pm

Picking up indirectly on Sean R.’s comments, some of this may be marketing. After all, an astonishing percentage of Americans are now obese (35-40%), and an additional 1/3 are overweight. They are likely to identify with overweight and/or obese celebrities, and their money is as good as anyone else’s, when buying the sponsors’ products. Commercialism has pervaded these shows from top to bottom.

Although contrariwise, the media is perfectly willing to use obesity to attack those (conservatives and/or Republicans) they disagree with. For instance, in the Wall Street Journal, whenever there are pictures of Gingrich, Perry, Bachmann, etc. supporters, almost all of them are obese and dressed in a slovenly manner. It has happened so often I don’t see how it can be accidental.

Little Al on January 16, 2012 at 1:26 pm

TheDarkEricDraven on January 16, 2012 at 2:27 pm

Eric, it’s amusing to see you get huffy when you are less than cogent.

I am STILL saying “Huh?” to your remark because Sean DID say LGBT and THAT includes bisexual (the b stands for that). I can’t speak for him but I reckon he means that LGBT crowd is attracted to anorexic women because of the style of dress and just the many sorts of style that the whole lot possesses. It runs the gamut.

I dunno about you but most gays and lesbians I know are attracted to looks of peeps (without a sexual agenda) whether they are male or female. Especially the gay men. THAT is how a gay guy could be attracted to a women.

And we straight girls think that actor Matt Bomer is incredibly good-looking even if he is as gay as a goose. Anyone with eyes can see that.

Skunky on January 16, 2012 at 2:49 pm

I know he said LGBT. I asked “Why not just say bisexual?”. If he did intend it as you say, though, it sounds rather negative. “Only LGBT people like *that*”.

And what is a sexual agenda? You mean…sexual attraction? Well, gee, I guess you’ve got a sexual agenda towards Matt Bomer, then. Everyone has a sexual agenda!…Except asexuals, but I digress.

TheDarkEricDraven on January 16, 2012 at 3:46 pm

Eric Craven, you are a nasty and dumb dork. And your reading comprehension gets worse with every post. Nowhere did I or Sean say “Only LGBT people like *that*”. Moron.

The problem is not with what I said or what Sean means but that you don’t comprehend what you read. As DS says “RIF:Reading Is Fundamental”. How I wish a RIF truck was in your neighbourhood.

You should start trying to know what you are talking about in lieu of looking for things to be offended by. You have such a sad, dorky life that you actually look for things to get upset about. Things that are not really there. You’re like Don Quixote without the humility and charm.

You’re not gonna get any quarter from me. You have embarrassed yourself in every post but are too arrogant to acknowledge it.

What are you 12? Finding someone attractive does NOT mean one wants to have sex with them. What’s wrong with you, for crying out loud????? You try extra hard to believe stupidly.

The most beautiful human being I have ever known was close to 300 lbs. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it bothers me to see people be hurtful. Facts are, being obese is unhealthy and most men, without some kinky alternative take on beauty, view fat women as ugly.

A fat woman is not, from a ‘primal’ P.O.V seen as a good bearer for your offspring — our innate human instincts tell us this.

How many men want to get with a fat woman, have kids only for her to die from a McDonald’s induced coronary?

Being slim, with a healthy amount of body fat, good cardiovascular health and a general balance within your bodily system is aspirational.

This ‘let’s pretend fat is normal and not unattractive B.S’ is uber-annoying in that it tries to manipulate our innate instincts into believing a myth.

Barry on January 17, 2012 at 3:08 am

Look at the nunber and frequency of replies to your website over what people wear and weigh on this cockamamy program. Here we are about to name a presidential candidate from a nightmare of choices while teetering on the edge of an economic abyss, lackadasically preparing for a major escallation and war and this is what we are as a nation are most cocerned about. Geez!

Ron Wolf on January 17, 2012 at 8:03 am

Barry – as for “primal”, please take a look at the ancient statues of fertility goddesses and “venus” statues of ancient civilizations. I’m not talking about Greek and Rome. I’m talking older than that. When people first started making statues.

Females were sculpted as fat. In fact, in a hunter-gatherer society, a fat woman is a woman who is wealthy, with plenty to eat, and bound to have better babies, since they won’t be starving, either. That was the view back in the “primal” days.

Look at the Venus of Willendorf, or the Venus of Hohle Fels. Venus of Dolní V?stonice. All of these attest to the fact that primitive, primal men, preferred their women on the fat side.

Nowadays, the thin look has been pushed so far that their are pro-anorexia sites, to help women (and men) get thin enough to be be “beautiful.”

The truth is, health and beauty are entirely separate concepts. Women 200 years ago used to take arsenic to make themselves pale and sickly looking, because it was fashionable and considered beautiful. Then there was the corset-craze, which made it almost impossible for a woman to take a deep breath. A woman should not have the same waist as an eight-year-old child. It’s not healthy. Those organs need room!

Complain about the health issues with fat, if you must. However, beauty is subjective. It always has been, and always will be. Yes, there are chubby chasers today. And there are, in fact, some people who look at people AS people, and not as physical types, and actually see the beauty within.

Please do away with the broad statements about what is beautiful, and what is primally attractive. They don’t work.

Yes, Ms. McCarthy is obese but she is NOT ugly by any means.
She has beautiful porcelain skin and lovely eyes.

As for Jeanne Mai, her show “How do I look” is pretty evil.
Debbie, I suggest you check out a clip on youtube of Jeanne’s show where she berates a bride to be before her wedding day calling her a “skank” and saying she looks like she could catch a VD in her miniskirt.

The name of the clip is “Two sizes two small.”

This is Jeanne Mai at her worst.
