The Two Big Stories/Questions Now: Rev. Wright @ ONauguration?, Bush Pardons

By Debbie Schlussel
Since we now find ourselves in the midst of Bush’s lame duck last days in office and Obama’s transition to taking the oath of office, here are two stories I look forward to writing about:
* Bush Pardons: Who will President Bush pardon before he leaves office? I’m betting that it won’t be the landslide of scum that Bill Clinton pardoned. While Bush has at least one sleazy brother–Neil–who has taken money from others (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates) to influence Bush, I’d bet you won’t see anything like the Rodham Brothers who lobbied Clinton for a sudden new “client” seeking a pardon (who paid them $400K for the privilege). I doubt we’ll see Bush do any pardons of drug kingpins like Carlos Vignali, as Bill Clinton did.
I’ll bet we won’t see anything like the Marc Rich pardon, though we will see a deserved complete pardon for Lewis “Scooter” Libby (who was once Marc Rich’s lawyer).

Not Out of the Picture

I’m sure we won’t see anything like the Mel Reynolds pardon. Etc., etc., etc.
President Bush’s past pardons–if they are any indication of his future ones–went to people who were mostly not well-connected, but who committed minor, harmless crimes and became good citizens. I hope that’s what we see come January 2009.
* Rev. Wright and the Inauguration: After attending the anti-American, anti-Semitic Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s church for two decades and refusing to disavow him, Obama finally realized he needed to cut the guy loose for strictly PR purposes.
But now Obama’s President. Will he invite Wright to his Inaugural festivities? Um, I mean the “Onaugural.” I’d put money on it. Will he invite him to the White House? Don’t bet against that. I think it’ll eventually happen.
I think slowly and quietly, Rev. Wright will be back in the Obama fold.
I’m also wondering whom Obama will choose to head up Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Let’s hope Tommy Lasorda’s buddy, John P. Torres, is nowhere in the mix. But the appointments will come later rather than sooner. The pardons and Inauguration invites are more immediate.
What other stories do you predict as the Bush Administration ends and the–shudder the thought–Obama White House commences?
**** UPDATE: Reader “rbb” bets Oprah is the first invited guest in the Lincoln Bedroom. Could be, but the real story there is whether her companion in the Lincoln is named Stedman . . . or Gayle.

Pardons? It would be nice to see Ramos and Compean on the list.

It is time for conservatives to consider the Libertarian option:
* Substantially reduce the size and intrusiveness of government and cut all taxes.
* Let peaceful, honest people offer their goods and services to willing consumers without a hassle from government.
* Let peaceful, honest people decide for themselves what to eat, drink, read, or smoke and how to dress, medicate themselves, or make love, without fear of criminal penalties.
* The U.S. government should defend Americans and their property in America.
“Given the low level of competence among politicians, every American should become a Libertarian.”
— Charley Reese, Alameda Times-Star (California), June 17, 2003
The politicians in Washington and our state capitals have led us away from the principles of individual liberty and personal responsibility which are the only sound foundation for a just, humane, and abundant society.
Government at all levels is too large, too expensive, woefully inefficient, arrogant, intrusive, and downright dangerous. Democratic and Republican politicians have created the status quo and do not intend to change it.

President Bush is a decent man. I haven’t agreed with many of his policies but he never stood up for himself or for conservatism. If you let yourself be defined by others, people will not view you in the way you deserve. Obama is just the opposite by nature. We will soon learn about his choices and how he will run the White House.

Hopefully Patrick Fitzgerald makes quick work in the next 75 days and indicts COBRAMA on the Rezko corruption scandal. It is obvious COBRAMA will take him off the investigation. Fitzgerald must pressure Rezko now and get him cough up COBRAMA for a lighter sentence. He was convicted on 14 counts. Hopefully Fitzgerald could drop a bombshell before inauguration and taint the Muslim in Chief. As for who will stay in the White House, maybe COBRAMA will allow J. Wright to have his COBRA meeting in the da House.

Hopefully Jonathan Pollard but I won’t count on it.

californiascreaming:
There are rumors that Fitzgerald has been investigating Obama. However I don’t know of anyone who believes there might be an indictment other than an article in the Chicago Sun Times that someone overheard Fitzgerald stating “I hope I have the courage to do the right thing”. That had to be referring to either Obama or the the Governor, but since going after a governor would be nothing for Fitzgerald (he put our last Governor in jail) it probably meant Obama. Fitzgerald has a long history of indicting anyone and everyone, even for the most minor of “technical” violations (Which is probably why Libby was indicted and a miracle that Rove was not).
That having been said, an indictment of Obama would be for public relations consumption only. This is for two reasons:
1) Unless it happens before the inauguration an indictment might be unconstitutional. I remember that during the impeachment proceedings, several legal experts (including Robert Bork) were claiming that while it is not settled law it was probably unconstitutional to indict a sitting President.
2) Obama would just pardon himself, making the whole indictment an exercise in futility.
I also don’t expect this congress to impeach him.

Yes B.O. PARDONS would be NOI. BUSH? Hmmm. Probably a few notables. He’s obviously not done sucking up to the left.

It might be, but it is not necessarily so. Obama needs people (anyone) with only one purpose – to propel him to the next step of power. He does not need anybody just to be close to him. He steps on people, use them, crush them if needed, squeeze them, and, after they accomplished his goal – throw them away. And his infamous fence around is not surprising me at all.

My current question is was Wright at Obama’s acceptance speech at Grant Park?
I was watching Fox News election night … after McCain’s concession speech there was a stretch of time before Obama was to appear on stage in Grant Park. Fox kept a camera on the stage while the news guys were talking about other topics. During this period a man was seen walking from the back of the stage up to the stage front. I thought to myself, “Om my God, it’s Rev. Wright!” But very quickly the camera cut off … I flipped channels to other networks and no one had a stage view.
Who was this guy? The question is floating around the internet, so at least I wasn’t the only person who saw this —- with the same reaction.
