Hype Overkill: So a Liberal Black Guy Endorses a Liberal Black Guy

By Debbie Schlussel
So, two prominent liberal Black politicians go into a bar . . . .
It reads like a joke. But the punchline is that one of them, Colin Powell, endorses the other for the White House.

powellobama.jpg

Colin Powell is and has always been a liberal. The liberal mainstream media, which, of course, wants Barack Obama to win, is making a big deal out of something that’s actually not a big deal, something that’s quite predictable.
As I’ve always noted, Colin Powell was a liberal and has been a fan of skin-color-based affirmative action, from which he’s benefited his entire life. Skin color, in no short measure is why he became a General, why he got promoted to the top of America’s military, why he was chosen for a key role in both Bush, father and son, administrations, and why he was given a coveted position on AOL’s board, which made him an instant gazillionaire, once his son (also benefitting from Bush-based affirmative action) approved the deal as head of the FCC. It certainly wasn’t his foreign policy, which was anti-Israel, pan-Arabist, and liberal, liberal, liberal. As I’ve always noted, as Secretary of State, Colin Powell was “Madeleine Albright Minus the Skirt” . . . and lipstick . . . and ugly brooches.
Powell was never a Republican. He benefited from positions in Republican administrations. There’s a difference.
From my April 2001 column on Colin Powell:

Is Colin Powell Madeleine Albright in Republican clothing?
As Secretary of State, he’s acting more like her everyday. Minus the lipstick and ugly brooches.
That should trouble anyone disgusted by Clinton’s Keystone Kops foreign policy conducted by the secretary of state in a skirt.
Albright loved being a celebrity and its associated trappings. . . .
The Czechoslovak-born Albright even had the gall to push for amending the Constitution so foreign-born Americans — particularly herself — can run for president. Indeed, she is Mad (-eleine Albright).
It’s as mad as Powell’s claim he’s a long-time Republican. In his 1995 best-selling autobiography, “My American Journey,” Powell said he is liberal on many issues. “Neither of the two major parties fits me. … The time may be at hand for a third major party to emerge.” “I admire … Bill Clinton.” During Clinton impeachment hearings, Powell’s daughter Anne got a coveted audition for co-host of ABC’s “The View,” during which she vehemently attacked Republicans and conservatives and stood up for Clinton and his private life. You can bet the young Powellette apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Her sister played a proud lesbian in an off-Broadway play, with Papa Powell gushing to the media.
Powell shares Albright’s taste for celebrities. But, even worse than attending their concerts, he’s consulting them on foreign policy. In March, he met for an hour with U2’s Bono about forgiving tax-funded loans to third-world nations. Wednesday, he met with Paul McCartney and girlfriend/model Heather Mills about their anti-landmine campaign. That’s supposed to be a defense issue. Apparently, one must be a has-been UK pop star to advise Powell on U.S. foreign policy. Who’s next, Elton John?
Then, there’s Powell’s Albrightesque behavior toward Israel. A Palestinian-sponsored torrent of terrorist bombings, shootings, and warfare now faces Israel on a daily basis. In the tradition of U.S. peace through strength defense policy, Israel responds, attacking those Palestinian installations fomenting the violence. And what does Powell do? He attacks Israel as “overreacting.” In Powell’s world, Israel should just accept the cold-blooded murder of its civilians within its own borders. Could this be connected with the $200,000 in speaking fees he accepted in November from the pro-Syrian, anti-Israel Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Issam Fares? Powell already knew he’d be Bush’s Secretary of State when he delivered the paid Tufts University address, a huge conflict of interest.
Powell’s policies are no surprise. He’s the same guy who opposed the Gulf War. Being a “great military mind,” Powell opposed the engagement, predicting we’d badly lose in a ground war. As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he and Albright pushed Clinton for military involvement in Kosovo. . . .
There’s a difference between Albright and Powell. A noxious presence, she did not carry Powell’s heavy conflict-of-interest baggage. In addition to questionable speaking fees, Powell was a large stockholder in America Online (AOL), sitting on its board. His son, Michael, now FCC Chairman, voted to approve the AOL-Time Warner merger, earning pops millions in increased stock option value when he exercised them. Now at State, Powell brought in crony AOL Time Warner Chairman Steve Case to consult and install State’s new computer system. All without a competitive bidding process. Suddenly, Powell is against sanctions, which he so adamantly supported during the Gulf War. Interesting, since Case wants to expand AOL’s empire to U.S.-embargoed nations. It’s not the only conflict of interest for the Powell family. Daughter Anne was suddenly named co-host of AOL Time Warner’s TBS network’s “War Games” show, while brother Michael regulates the company at FCC. The Powells are well-connected.
Which is why Powell, an Albright-clone, got the job. Sounding like Hillary, Laura Bush told Larry King, on Wednesday, that she helped Bush pick his advisers and staff. She said she was “proud that a lot of women are at the table.” Apparently Bush has a Clintonesque affirmative action staffing policy.
Clinton picked Albright because she was a woman. Did Bush — or his wife — pick Colin Powell merely because he’s black?
Unless it’s a mutual affinity for Beatles’ political advice, it sure seems that way.

Bottom line: If you liked Madeleine Albright’s foreign policy, you’ll love Barack Obama’s. Colin Powell will be one of his top advisors, even if it’s not in an official capacity.

Both Bush pere et fils, being Rockefeller Republican country club noblesse oblige liberals, staffed their administrations with disloyal, RINOs, liberals and were shocked, shocked, to find them betraying them at every opportunity. Sometimes I do wonder if Bush is stupid as the Left claims he is. As for Colin Powell (with his affected air of gravitas) the operative word to describe him is courtier. How soon by the way before Condi joins in? As for Powell being a war hero and a great General, ha! We are not talking Audie Murphy, Ulysses S. Grant or even John McCain here. Thanks to Ronald Reagan, GHW Bush, and GW Bush that mediocrity was promoted far above his means (Peter Principle) and has rewarded the political party that gave him so much
and was so good to him and his useless son, with base ingratitude. Serves them right in a way. By the way there is a report that O’Bama would pick another RINO (and Israel hater) for Sec. of Defense – Chuckles Hagel soon to be ex Senator from Nebraska.

By the way, we have not had a good Secretary of State since George Schultz. All the others – James Baker, Lawrence Eagleburger, Warren Christopher, Madeline Albright, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice – sucked!

Ripper on October 20, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Damn, Debbie! You NAILED it AGAIN! I have been listening to and reading commentary all over the conservative media world and your analysis of Powell’s endorsement of Obama is BY FAR the best!
I was in the military when Powell was at the top of his military career, and there was very little about him that inspired me or moved me to admiration. He struck me as a mediochre moderate. I just heard Michael Medved on the radio saying that Powell “exudes charisma,” and was left thinking, “Huh?”

“By the way, we have not had a good Secretary of State since George Schultz.”
I think you are being overly generous to Schult!

A week after he left office, former Sec. of State Colin Powell was personally presented with a brand new Jaguar by Saudi Ambassador Prince Bandar. As Bandar once explained: “If the reputation then builds that the Saudis take care of friends when they leave office, you’d be surprised how much better friends you have who are just coming into office.”
Powell of Arabia endorsed O’Bama not because he’s black but rather because O’Bama will serve the Saudis better. Follow the money.

Miss Schlussel, Et Alii:
What I remember most about General Colin Powell was something he said when he was being considered for possible nomination as the Republican Party’s candidate for President of the United States.
General Powell said he thought police should be permitted to enter private residences, without a warrant, in order to seize firearms.
Does anyone else remember that statement?
It was many years ago.
But, yes, it IS all about racial differences, isn’t it?
That becomes instantaneously rather obvious when you’re White and live in a city that’s almost entirely Black, like Washington, D.C.
I have not yet met ANY Black person, no matter how well educated, who respects such basic eternal concepts as inalienable rights, the Republic, and the Constitution of the United States.
Actually, today, relatively few White people understand those basic ideals.
Our entire contemporary society suffers woeful ignorance, which must inevitably result in the tragic demise of our nation.
Thank you.

About time someone told the truth about this endorsement. I’m confused though. I thought only white people llowed racial prejudice to infuence their votes.
Thus the 99% of black who will vote for Obama (or maybe the 105%) are not basing this on race, but are basing it on objective analysis, which has nothing to do with race. Likewise with Powell, since no MSM accont I have heard indicated race might be a factor.
You deserve a lot of credit for telling the truth about this endorsement.

Before Desert Shield I remember the stark difference between Gen. Powell’s and Gen. Schwarzkopfs assessment of the coming war with Iraq. Powells outlook was borderlining on that of a scared coward with all the apprehension that the Iraqi’s had been skilled experienced war vets after fighting the Iranians for years and that it would be a daunting task. Stormin’ Norman was extremely confident and stated that the Iraqi’s weren’t 10 feet tall. In the end Stormin’ dead on and it was a turkey shoot. It was Star Wars tech vs. WWI tech. NOBODY held Colin to his original assessment because they were so happy and surprised and hey he’s a general. As an airman, at the time, I had a lot at stake in the war and was glad that Stormin’ Norman was in charge of the strategy and tactics and not the affirmative action appointee called Colin.
Powells experience in Vietnam was short and sweet. As a junior officer he stepped on a pungee stick and sat the rest of the conflict out. Stormin’ did more in Vietnam than I have time to write about. Who got the majority of the credit in Desert Storm? Colin did. Powells the luckiest black guy the military has ever produced and is a glory whore. Obviously.

samurai on October 20, 2008 at 5:21 pm

I’m pretty dissapointed. I didn’t really think Powell was that liberal.
It just shows that some people will jump over the bridge to support someone who is unqualifed in politics.

Squirrel3D on October 20, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Now Powell supported the Iraq war, but he was coerced. His beliefs prior to that moment at the UN have been proven correct. He was absolutely right about sanctions, about using overwhelming force for the invasion, and about “if you break it (i.e., Iraq) you own it. Time and time again Republicans have ignored this sage’s advice.
Powell endorsed Obama for one reason only: Powell loves America.
And you conservatives do have something to thank Powell for: if it had not been for Powell’s stance against open homosexuality in the military, gays would have been allowed in the military in 1992! That is why Powell is a Republican.

Norman Blitzer on October 20, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Thanks Debbie for not pulling punches. After reading articles or hearing countless pundits talk about Colin Powell this and Colin Powell that, it is good to hear someone call it like is. As much as I respect Colin Powel as a Military Man and Gentlemen, he is not the conservative the GOP has tried to make him out to. Colin does have a love for his country that Obama doesnt have (he is a citizen of the world). True conservatives are not suprised about this decision, but the liberal media is trying to rub the crap in McCain’s face.
Basically this Media and the whacked out Liberals are the powerful force running the nation now. Hell look at Joe the Plumber, an innocent guy, who is now being marginalized for every aspect of his life by the Media. Unfortunately the morons eat this up. Republicans will have to learn how to stop the Liberal Hate Machine that has taken down Bush, the Iraq War, Hillary, Palin and McCain. Liberals used to fight with ideas now it is personal attacks. Using victimization to justify all ther attacks.
Time is running out and Obama can almost declare victory. McCain is answering questions about LOSING to Chris Wallace. He should say he never surrenders like he was a POW. Hell if McCain fought like Hillary, he would be up 100 electoral votes no down 190 electoral votes. Hillary scared Obama more than McCain. Can McCain win? I think his only chance is if a new revelation arises. The MSM has trained the people to vote for Obama and the national self induced emasculation will occur if Obama wins. “Cajones? We dont need no stinkin Cajones”
McCain only has 14 days for a new revelation to uncork.

californiascreaming on October 20, 2008 at 6:53 pm

By the way, everybody, Norman Schwarzkopf has endorsed McCain for president, according to wikipedia. Anyone hear anything about that endorsement in media? Seems Rush should’ve had the scoop on that one. If he did I didn’t hear it.

samurai on October 20, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Upon looking google up on this topic, January 28th 2008, Fox news reported that Schwarzkopf endorsed McCain. I stand corrected but still correct in principal.

Colin wait a minute you just got “outendorsed” by Kadaffi. He beat you to the punch.

Colin Powell is a cautious, plodding, mediocrity who for not for the pigmentation of his skin would never have been known. He reminds me of the cautious frightened French generals of World War II.

Ripper on October 20, 2008 at 8:32 pm

Debbie: I was unaware of your blogsite at the time you wrote that expose of Colin Powell, and it remains revelatory today. My previous respect for Powell has been transformed into utter contempt for the man. You have few if any peers as a journalist with respect to uncovering and reporting corruption of public figures, stripping away their deceptive veneer of respectability as accorded to them by the mainstream media and received wisdom. You are invaluable.

Obama is not a liberal, he is a stealth communist and stealth muslim.

arius on October 21, 2008 at 1:18 am

I was never really a fan of Powell, and all the cult following that he had was more of the Obama type, where his positions didn’t matter, and all that did was his life story – much the same as the route McCain had taken. Like I said on JihadWatch, this is one of the few things that makes me happy that McCain is the nominee – I’d have hated to see Giuliani, Tancredo or even Romney get stabbed in the back. McCain has never tired of triangulating himself above Conservatives and Democrats, and it’s ironically funny to see his fellow Liberal Republicans – Chuck Hagel, Colin Powell – betray him. Such betrayals should have come from Conservatives.
Well, McCain will go down 3 weeks from now, and although I agree with Debbie about Palin, I’m sad that this could do it for her political career: after all, she’s just been governor for 2 years, and could have/can learn a lot in the next 4 about the threat of islam (the real facts, as known to Debbie and Spencer, as opposed to the fake arguments put forward by McCain). I just wish McCain, even if he’s defeated, would leave the Senate and let Conservatives take over the party.

But Arius, the American government has just spent hundred’s of billions of dollars nationalizing the bulk of your banking and finance industry. As indeed has mine.
We are all Communists now.

Colin is yet another politician in uniform, much like Frank Myers. While Colin walks on the fence for the current administration, he pretty much blows the way the wind blows, making sure he can turn around once wind changes direction. So, look at Colin bidding for the Bush s,m while he served in their administration, but also covering his bases for the ‘change’. Of course, Colin does not care for the policies of whoever is in power. He cares for ‘whoever is in power’.
Then again, when the Commander-in-chief is a politician, why not his generals?

Alert on October 21, 2008 at 7:51 am

An endorsement from Colon Plow Hmm I mean Colin Powell was to be expected. In fact every influential Black who opposed Obama when they thought he would loose to Hillary has now come out in favor of him. He want’s a seat at this table too. I do wonder how him and Obama’s race mentor Rev Wright will get along as the Good Rev has spoken Ill of Colin many, many, times.
We do need to not panic though. Even with Chairman Maobama in the Oval Office we have something more powerful than his Communism. We have our money. We need to withhold our money from the economy. Obama has made promises he wants US to keep, failing to inform the chanting masses that we can not be FORCED to produce. If you truly want to undermine this march into Communism then simply cut your own grass, cook your own food, do not go to movies, spend NOTHING not essential to your survival. If you must buy a new vehicle buy used from a private (conservative) seller {don’t be afraid to ask their political leanings} remove your money from the stock market, If you own a business lay off as many employees as you can and cut production back as much as possible to stay in business. Government officials should do nothing to interfere with the plans of the Liberals. Do not try to block them vote “Present” Let the American people see what living under the Communist system is really like. It will be a rough 4 years but it is really the only hope of saving our Nation

If I recall correctly, when the issue of Bill Ayers was first brought up 1 year ago I am almost sure that Powell was quoted on NPR as praising Ayers work today with juveniles. Due to the recent hype on Powell I can’t recover the quote on the internet (and maybe it did not happen). Does anyone else remember this?

Who cares what Colin Powell thinks. He was the first to call forth a two state solution to divide Israel even before Bush and Ol Condi Rice. Both are traitors, and losers!
Funny, as in ha ha not peculiar sort of way, all the the liberal Black democrats used to curse him. What joke Powell supports Obama. They deserve each other. Gee, maybe they’ll stop cursing him now. With all that Obama groveling. No wonder he wanted to divide Israel.

Madeleine Albright’s hatred for the United States is unbelievable! She is 100% communist. I guess it NOT a surprise that the media has covered for her from the beginning. You will seldom hear any of her speeches because after you remove her slams there is not much left.
