Full Circle – Flashback: Ronald Reagan Knew the Real Labor Day

By Debbie Schlussel

Check out the article and pic below, which ran over the weekend in the Detroit Free Pressistan.  Thirty-one years ago today, Ronald Reagan showed his appreciation for the working man–the Reagan Democrats (who largely no longer exist)–and it paid off in spades as he went on to win the Presidential election in a landslide.  He knew that the election was about one thing: jobs.  Today, it is about jobs and $4 a gallon gas, too (I paid $3.95 per gallon yesterday, and this cannot stand).  In 1980, Jimmy Carter was in a Ku Klux Klan stronghold.  Today, our current Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, was in Detroitistan, where his union cohorts implore violence against conservatives and Republicans.  Obama already has the Klan thing covered, after 22 years in the Karmel Klux Klan church of Jeremiah Wright.

The major difference today is that there is no Ronald Reagan.  The leading GOP candidate indicates that there is only George W. Bush 3.0 a/k/a Rick Perry, and it’s a disaster.  The story about what Reagan was doing 31 years ago today is worth reading.  Reagan invaded union central, in coming to Michigan, reaching out to the then-vibrant American working class and showing them he, not unions and liberal Democrats, knew what would make things better for them.  Today’s Republicans aren’t making these kinds of bold moves.  They could learn a lot from him.

Debbie I was in grade school back then but I knew Reagan would make things better. I has been depressed watching the Iranians humiliate us day after day during the hostage crisis. Obama is possibly a worse president than Carter but thanks to Reagan he has great Special Forces to make him look slightly more competent.

I’m DS’ age. One things that bothers me more than anything in retrospect is growing up in a Liberal hell-hole and NOT supporting President Reagan.

I wish I had enough smarts to know that the Liberals were lying to me. Of course back then, I didn’t do my own research. I took the Liberal talking-points as facts.

I was too young to vote but I supported Mondale and Ferrarro. I went to their Boston rally in 1984. How dumb was I??? I knew nothing and thought I knew it all. It makes me so sick. Uck. It’s the only time I wish to go back into a time machine for!!!!

That’s why I am so passionate about proper Conservativism. I feel very cheated that those a-hole lied. And almost everyday I deeply regret me not knowing the truth about Reagan. I will never forgive Liberal frauds for how they lied to me. NEVER.

I agree that among Democratic politicians, Reagan Democrats no longer exist, but I think they still exist among the rank-and-file. For instance, Hillary’s strong showings in the late Democratic primaries in industrial states in 2008.

I also agree that it is a lapse for the Republican presidential hopefuls not to campaign among industrial workers. This is particularly true given the Democratic demagoguery about long-term unemployment. Can you believe that they’re saying that this represents discrimination against the long-term unemployed and that there should be regulations against this thpe of “discrimination”? This is sure to be part of Obama’s speech on Sept. 8.

Dude, a Reagan Democrat would never vote for Hillary Clinton. Doesn’t anyone remember that Hillary Clinton is to the left of Jimmy Carter? She pretended to move to the center after Bill Clinton’s disastrous first two years in office. But she is still the far left 60s Marxist radical that she always was.

      Spot on Gerald! 😀

Debbie, when Reagan took office, I was only 2 years old, so clearly I didn’t remember squat back in 1980 when he took office. But as time progressed throughout the 1980s as I got a little older and was a little child, I remember a few stuff about Ronald Reagan and I clearly wasn’t into politics as a little twerpy child.

However as a teenager I remember the Clinton years and I was suckered and brainwashed and thought that Clinton was a great president (And I don’t think the guy was a great president), and I wasn’t into politics in the 1990s during the Clinton presidency.

Skunky, you said that back in the 1980s you were a liberal and you brainwashed by the left, etc. In the 1990s I was a little indoctrinated and thinking that Bill Clinton was a terrific president and as I said, back in the 1990s I was NOT into politics and I could careless for politics in the 1990s. So I was NEVER a liberal in my life Skunky, at that time I considered myself a “Centrist” (even though I was apathetic of politics)! But the day after September 11, 2001, I started to consider myself a “Conservative”, but despite all of that, I still wasn’t involved into politics, I sorta ate up all of the conservative talking points as facts (as the fake conservatives who attack DS today). By 2004 during the elections, I started to more and more involved into politics and listened to conservative talk radio shows, about a few years later I started to become an Independent free thinker (just like DS is today, a centrist-conservative who’s an Independent free thinker) and not become a partisan hack like those conservatives who attack Debbie and her reputation!

Hi Sean. I wish I could never say I was a Liberal. It’s embarrassing to look back. The lies and the betrayal get me the most.

Around 1995, I started to see the cracks in the Liberals…not really politically…but in social issues. The hypocrisy started making me sick. And by then, I had to cop that feminism was the biggest fraud on the planet. I voted to Clinton in 92 (Ick!!!!) but I didn’t in 96…I was apolitical then but knew enough to know NOT to vote for that beast. Unlike N.O.W and other feminists, I was NOT a hypocrite.

Little Al, are you sure Reagan Dems WOULD vote for Hillary? I think we forget her socialism because of Zero. I never forget what a viper she is. I see many peeps forgetting thou’ because Zero is so bad.

Gianni. Perry is a religious Liberal. And most importantly he panders to Islam.

For those paying attention, they are playing fast and loose at this VERY MINUTE in the GOP race. They are trying to push Perry and Romney as the front-runners and I hear so-called CONSERVATIVES playing along. It’s happening RIGHT NOW. They are gonna push those two idiots forward (the establishment). All the sudden, Bachmann is toast. WHY????

Also, we will see now if Bachmann is indeed on the level or that Romney stalking horse.

I haven’t lived in Detroit in about 20 years, and I’m a teetotaler for several years now, but I do remember that Stroh’s was a darn good beer.

DS_ROCKS! on September 6, 2011 at 2:24 am

Everything has changed but there is no Ronald Reagan waiting in the wings. We may get an Obama second term b/c the GOP nominates a candidate who doesn’t excite people. It happened before in 1996.

With $4 a gallon gas prices, no employment growth in August, a massive national debt and a recession waiting around the corner, something has to give. Things were a lot different in 1980 and today they are far worse.

There are other choices besides Socialist (Dem) and Socialist-lite (GOP). One can find actual conservative candidates if you are willing to eschew the two-party ruling junta.

Don’t quite understand the loathing of Rick Perry. He does have a pretty impressive economic record as Governor of Texas. He would be much better than the current occupant of the oval office. He seems pretty down to earth.

GianniV on September 6, 2011 at 9:57 am

Gianni, I hate to burst you’re bubble bro, but I don’t think that Rick Perry is the best front-runner for the GOP! If you’ve missed the news from a month ago, Perry recieved numerous emails in his inbox from “CAIR” and they (CAIR) want him to run, because Perry has done numerous placating to muslims throughout the state of Texas. Gianni, do you want islamic propaganda in the Texas state schools, let alone in the schools nationwide? I sure as hell don’t! And also he has a strong ties to the “Aga Khan”, in which from what I’ve learned, they’ve done numerous negotiating with hamas or hezbollah over the years, and I don’t think that the Aga Khan is an infidel muslim group! Gianni, I wouldn’t get too attached to Rick Perry, do a search on all of these things that I mentioned.

This discussion about having been a former liberal – simply because we weren’t aware of any lies or agendas being fed to us by the 3 primetime news networks — you know, back when we as a nation were truly aligned in so many ways [and wasn’t that actually a wonderful thing???]…well, it almosts begs therapy to be resolved of our former behaviors as liberal!
It is poignant and tragic that my sister-in-law and I regularly lament the fact that we were taken in as college students [in the late 60’s – and you know what that means!] and yet thankfully into our late 40’s we began to learn/peel back the truth on the media circus and their shenanigans! In fact, it was the Lewinsky Scandal for me which was ginned up by the mainstream media [lasting 2 whole yrs!] {and recall as well that the RINO’s caved and wouldn’t impeach Clinton…WHAT???}.
YES a bit of group therapy might be in order to lament and to be able to forgive our previous misled political knowledge/behaviors! In short, it is actually good & comforting to hear and to be able to vent this regret – which I certainly have myself – that make so many of us so uncomfortable. We cannot change history — but we can surely celebrate our breakthrough into awareness and clarity of thought now and into our futures — AMEN TO THAT! I am glad this subject has come up — it is freeing! So let us go out into the world and do what we can to halt the damage being done by this ultra-left President and change our world for the better with the truth and light we know possess as Conservatives! G d bless!!!

robinpayne on September 6, 2011 at 2:14 pm

Robin, by all means VENT. It is very freeing.

I have to admit upfront that I did not do my own research, but I was a teen and I felt (even in the 80s) that adults would not lie to me. So me NOT doing my own research was my own fault. But I am glad I had the balls to know I was wrong and misled. Many Liberals know that but don’t have the guts to reverse because their whole identity is built up into their politics. Even if that happened to me, I’d still have changed because I don’t like being phony and wrong.

And even thou’ I wish I got it right from the beginning, I feel that I have a little extra “something” because I was among the Liberals and felt (erroneously) like them at one time. To me, that gives REAL Conservativism credibility because I tried BOTH sides. I do wish I was always a Conservative, BUT being on both sides has given more more clarity…and passion!

And make no mistake. The Left lies. And they are mentally ill!

How I long for the Reagan days to return. My dollar had far better earning power since when I first began making a wage. My tax dollars (what little were being scammed by the government, thanks again Ron) were being spent wisely, not pissed away on all the frivolous BS they are today.

This country better wake up and f**k itself straight, starting with a purge from the White House down. I’d say we are in dire times but that would be weak, at best. We are screwed unless we get control and get back to the strong and prosperous nation we were and quit taking crap off the rest of the world.

IceNoMore on September 6, 2011 at 5:57 pm

Reagan wasn’t perfect but this post makes me realise how far in the wrong direction this country has gone. Like Skunky,
I regret not appreciating the man for what he was, when he was…
…the last decent President to rule this land.

Sigh…I miss the 80’s. yeah, I really do.

theShadow on September 8, 2011 at 3:25 am

Reagan screwed the working the man….He sold off our pensions and we had to strike just to get them back…He was the only president to have a breadline since the Depression…I seriously get confused when people say how good of a President he was….sure he helped walstreet but as far as the middle class not very true….Everytime we get a Republican they screw Mr. Johnny middle class ….the only time we have actually been ahead of our debt was with a Bill Clinton…Please wake up America
