Pay of Foley Artists can go up to around $94,000/yr. I’m sure there is more pay for the elite of the business.

Back in the 80’s I worked in a recording studio that did video sweetening including some foley. I had a blast. One of the films I worked on, I had to create the sound of a guy peeing on a tree (not being a guy, I couldn’t go out and record myself :)). It was great fun.

I love stuff like this. I saw something akin to the report years ago and so now when I go to the movies and I hear a distinctive sound, I try to figure out what is REALLY making the sound. Very, very, cool!

Anyone who’s ever witnessed a real boxing match knows that when a glove connects with an opponent’s chin, it barely makes any sound at all. It’s only in movies that it always sounds something like the velociraptors jumping up on the sink in the kitchen:

This practice is nothing new. It dates back to the days when radio was THE only entertainment medium out there. There were people who amid the large radio studio, audience and live orchestra were those people who did the sound effects LIVE. For example, a pile of pots and pans and assorted junk would be used whenever Fibber McGee would open the door to his overstuffed closet, leading to all kinds of chaos. And guns would be fired off in crime dramas…assuming of course with blanks aimed at the top of the studio. Of course during live radio, one screw-up…and it’s all shot to heck, and in a comedy show leads to unintended laughs.

As time went along those sounds were pre-recorded onto discs or transcribed to be played at the appropriate time in the script.
