This is above all an insult to James Weldon Johnson who would certainly be appalled at the substitution of his great poem for our national anthem.
This was the first black man in Florida to pass the bar exam after Reconstruction, U.S. Consul to Venezuela a poet, anthologist and fighter for civil rights, an erudite and intelligent man who loved classical music AND Jazz. He worked tirelessly to create the first black classical orchestra in the U.S. – a dream come true for blacks who mastered classical instruments and went MAD with frustration having no place to play as no major orchestra would take them! His partner and dear friend in this dream was Ignatz Waghalter a Polish Jew born in extreme poverty himself.
He held his head high through unimaginable degradation and loved this country, loved Western culture and wanted his race to have access to it.
What do you think he would of thought of Madame Obama? Of hip-hop gangsta rap? Of this foul use of his own words?

What happened to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, where all races, creeds, downtrodden, religious expression, sexual preference, and gender could live under one common tenent. FREEDOM. We are the only country where all walks of life have come to live because of that right. Now we have the Black national anthem, In many states you can’t get a job working for state government if you don’t speak spanish, the Mexicans want their own national anthem, the Muslims want well everything, the gays want special rights and privledges, the blacks want well again everything handed to them free of charge. Special interest groups on all sides with their new master and ring leader, the grand poobah of everything we hate about America NoBama wants to destroy everything this country was founded on. No one is stopping these malcontents from well moving back to their country of origin, or moving to a country that already has their interests at heart. A new civil war is brewing in this country and as time has shown all good things must come to an end.(If you are any of the aformentioned above who do love this country please don’t take offense, these are broad generalities not meant for everyone.)

I wonder if Mr. Schlussel took the time to read the Black National Anthem before this post…had he done so, I am not sure how he could have come to the conclusion that one would sing it because they “don’t like America”…bit of a stretch, there, dontcha think, Mr. Schlussel?
I wonder at how many KKK members have sung our national anthem…does that give them ownership over a SONG somehow?

Debbie, I agree that in was inappropriate for her to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at an event where it was expected for her to sing the “Star Spangled Banner”, but let’s not get carried away. It is NOT the equivalent of singing a Nazi Anthem to open up an American event. “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was composed in the late 19th century as a song of spiritual uplift for a people recently out of slavery and struggling to make their way. The lyrics say:
Lift ev’ry voice and sing,
‘Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Wow….that really some racist and inflammatory language!!! Right. However, I fully understand in today’s anti-religious PC times, people do froth at the mouth when any song mentioning God and reliance on Him is sung at a government gathering, especially by someone Black. And as far as Louis Farakkan using the song at his gathering, “Amazing Grace” is also sung in supremacist White identity churces, but that takes nothing away from the original intent of the song. As a matter of fact, the Nation of Islam didn’t even exist in 1899 when James Weldon Johnson wrote “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, so the appropriations of spiritual songs by racists does not take away from the beauty and power of their lyrics.
By the way, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was in the National Baptist Hymnal when I was growing up, so as a Christian, I do find it way out of line that you would compare that song to some sort of Nazi anthem.

This is the greatest country on earth. I wasn’t even born here but I love this country more than a lot of native born Americans do, who seem to treat it very shabbily – like Denver’s John Hickenlooper. Yes, I’m now in Colorado and I thought very poorly of the event. Its not the words that are objectionable (I think they’re quite beautiful too) but I found the deliberate insult to our country in NOT singing our real national anthem too much to bear. I don’t think any of us would like that done to a human being. It shouldn’t be any more acceptable when its done to one’s country. Its just too much to expect liberals to show decent behavior towards the country in which they live. I’m with Debbie when she says if you don’t love America, leave! True patriotism I ought to add, isn’t about explaining it to others. A husband doesn’t have to explain his love for his wife and a patriot shouldn’t have to explain how he feels about his country. Its self-evident. That means love without substitution or qualification. Today’s Democrats seem incapable of doing that where America is concerned. We all expected better than this on the eve of our country’s birthday, July the Fourth.

I have no problem with the words. I have a problem with the fact that this so called artist was deceptive and disrespectful toward the country whose largess probably put her thru college or music school.
The fact that the ugliness that is racism tries to hide itself behind words whose intent are the opposite is disgusting and deceptive.
This ‘artist’ is first and foremost a liar. And I would be very hesitant to hire her to perform at any event, seeing as I’d have no way to know what she planned on performing.
And Wellington Webb. I lived in Denver when he was Mayor. “Lickenlooper” doesn’t suprise me in the least.

What native land to you have in mind? That’s a legit question. Given that James Weldon Johnson was born in the United States and wrote this at the beginning of the 20th century, a time when Blacks were struggling against trememdous odds to be included in the fabric of America (the theme of the song is faith and struggle), I can only assume he was encouraging Black folks to remain true to their native land of America despite their tribulations. He was a pretty incredible guy…in 1897,he was the first Black admitted to the Florida Bar since reconstruction, he started a school for Black kids in Jacksonville, Florida in 1906, and had a lifetime of tremendous accomplishment. Given that, I may have to concede to Debbie the point of how his song has been used, because it was appropriated by the NAACP in the 1930s and renamed “The Negro National Anthem”, and that’s how I knew it when singing it in the church choir as a youth.
By the way, take a look at the lyrics to “The Star Spangled Banner”:
O! say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Notice Francis Scott Key never mentioned a specific country when referring to “the land of the free and the home of the brave”, but given the circumstances under which the song was written, we all know he was talking about America. I assume the same when reading Johnson’s lyrics….

When I saw the post by DF–I thought WTF this is a DF for sure. What a moron.
As time rolls on, we have more of a free-4-all everyday. We have now redefined marriage to anything goes–today a person with their same sex partner–tomorrow it will be a person and their appointed other (child, animal, vehcicle, whatever). Now we consider CO2 a pollutant–everytime we exhale, we are polluting.
I say leave the national anthem alone. If you want to sing a song like this–don’t substitute such a version for the very reasons Debbie points out here. The analogy to what happened in Nazi Germany is worth keeping in view. We can’t keep allowing subversives (well intentioned or otherwise) to keep robbing us of our national heritage.
Kids growing up in today’s world have a lot against them. Unless they have parents who have their heads on straight and who can/will point out all the non-sense for them to avoid out there–parents who are vigilant to de-program what their kids get at public school and on TV in “values”— these kids are doomed to a brave new world that looks a lot like San Francisco, Amsterdam, Las Vegas and Sodom and Gomorrah. This “anthem” is another step to getting there sooner.

Of course I agree that it is inappropriate, to say the least to sing the Black National Anthem (sic — if blacks live in the United States the Star Spangled Banner should be thought of as their national anthem if they are not traitors) at these types of events. But I’m not sure that the singing of Lift Every Voice, or even its unsavory connotations is the worst part of it, bad as that is.
I think the worst part is the explicit rejection of our real national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner. The idea of which song to tie or allegiance to has succumbed to relativism, like many other things in our society. Maybe a Polish, or Mexican, or French gathering in this country should sing a different song.
Comments like DF’s just show these creeps in Denver & similar places that they can get away with this, because most people’s thought processes & ability to think logically are so abysmal.

The national anthem is the star spangled banner. Ether sing the f—ing song or get the f— off the damn stage and get the f— out of my country…NOW.
I am this angry right now (due to some crap with pizza hut yesterday), and the last thing I needed was another issue that involved race, racism, and anti-americanism.
Anita Baker, your one of my favorite all-time singers. Shut the f— up and do what your paid to do…sing wonderful songs. Loius Farrakan’t, you haven’t been relevant in more than 15 years now. No one cares what you have to say anymore to the real black america.
And for people who side with the pro-afro lennist, you don’t speak for all blacks on this issue. Many of us from the real black america take great offense whenever someone uses race to crap on america. In this case…the star spangled banner which I’m playing right now with the sound up.
Like I said….sing the damn song that you were brought in to sing, or get off the f—ing stage and let someone with a shread of respect sing the national anthem.

Man, PLEASE!!! Stating false assumptions like “Most Black people are racists” and saying “Most Blacks hate White people..I see it every day” is absolutely irresponsible. Just people you think you see it every day does not make it so…the world is composed of much more than what you see and experience. Don’t put on me (or my conservative counterpart Squirrel3D) the burden of being a hater and a racist just because of the color of our skin. I think you’re an example of people seeing what they want to see in order to justify their own negative feelings (They hate us so it’s okay to hate them! I saw Black militants pull this stunt all the time in my younger days…I know the game.)
You mentioned the workplace…just how are people supposed to act in the workplace? Are we supposed to be civil and cooperative in order to get work done, ensure our organization is a success and get promotions and payraises so we can continue to put a roof over our heads or food on the table, or would you rather the workplace resemble a federal prison? A professional is SUPPOSED to be on their best behavior in the workplace, no matter what their skin color. I could care less how my White co-workers feel about Black folks when they get home…all that matters is that I treat them with respect and cordiality in the workplace and they do the same with me.
“Hate” and “racists” are strong words that should not be used lightly. As I’ve stated before, most Black folks, just like other Americans, are too busy trying to avoid layoffs, pay bills, negotiate rising gas and food prices, save for the kids college fund, deal with aging parents, and handling medical issues to get all wrapped up in hate. You give yourself too much credit…most Black folks are too busy trying to survive and thrive rather than being wasting energy on hating White folks. And by the way, maybe those “Blacks who love Whites” are doing so because of their religious faith, and/or maybe they’re genuinely good people…being nice and treating people right does not necessarily mean you’re a butt-kisser. It may mean…gasp..that you’re actually a decent human being! I DO NOT wish to live in whatever world your mindset has placed you in…that is a terrible way to live one’s life.

Well what’s not laughable is your hatred and stereotyping of a whole race based on your own limited experience. But it happens all the time on this site and other media. If Debbie features a White person who does something stupid, you rarely if ever see any post attacking or stereotyping the whole White race based on that one person’s actions. You may see posts attacking liberals or Hollywood actors or some other such group, but rarely is the person’s race attacked.
But let Debbie post a story about a Black person doing something stupid like this loon in Denver and the reaction is always predictable….the whole Black race is attacked and painted with a broad brush. I am simply incredulous with what I’m hearing on talk radio and reading on the Internet regarding this incident. How in the hell are ALL Black people at fault because some singer in Denver foolishly decided to “experiment” with the National Anthem? SHE deserves criticism and rebuke, not Black people as a whole. Black singers are commissioned to sing the National Anthem at events across the country every day and do it as written…why are we all of a sudden being vilified because one knucklehead out of a thousand decides to do her own thing?
The same thing happened with the Jeremiah Wright incident. ALL Black churches were tarred and feathered with the same brush because of what was going on at Trinity in Chicago. All Black Baptist, Methodist, Congregationalist, Word of Faith, Pentecostal, AME, UME, and other denomincations were all put under the same umbrella by folks because of that incident. It seems no one had the critical thinking skills to realize that there are as many different kinds of churches as their are people and the actions of one church should not define a whole race.
I hope you are thanking GOD every day that you can operate in America as an “Indepedent” conservative. As a Black man in America, I cannot operate indepedently….because I know that whatever actions I take will be used to judge the race as a whole. Because of people like you, if I screw up on my job, you can bet the hiring manager won’t be hiring any more Black folks anytime soon if he/she can help it. Because of people who think like you, if I do something stupid or badly, it’s not only my mistake…ALL Black people must be held accountable. And because of people like you, if some addle-brained singer in Denver purposely screws up the National Anthem, I and other Black folks must be blamed and held responsible. Somehow her foolish attempt at musical experimentation is now evidence of the seething hatred all we Blacks folks have of White people. The whole incident has been overblown.
