Farrakhan’s (& Anita Baker’s) Fave Song: About That Separatist Black National Anthem

By Debbie Schlussel
**** UPDATE #2: VIDEO ADDED ****
**** SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE BACKGROUND ON DENVER’S RACIAL DIVIDE ****
Many readers–and many parties around the country–are rightfully upset that the “Black National Anthem” was sung instead of the REAL American National Anthem at Denver Mayor John Hickenloper’s delivery of the State of the City address, yesterday morning.
But what makes it even more objectionable (as if it could be more objectionable) is that this separatist “anthem” is sung at the opening of Nation of Islam events. In fact, as I noted last year, this song was also sung at a Louis Farrakhan speech at a Nation of Islam gathering in Detroit by none other than Grammy award winner Anita Baker.
It’s the equivalent of singing a Nazi anthem from Germany to open an American government event. No difference. But why sing, “Deutschland Uber Alles,” when you can sing “Schwarzen Uber Alles“?

anitabaker.jpglouisfarrakhan.jpg

Anita Baker & Louis Farrakhan: Big Fans of “Black National Anthem”

Most sickening, however, is the reasoning by singer Rene Marie, regarding why she chose to sing this instead of America’s National Anthem:

When I decided to sing my version, what was going on in my head was: ‘I want to express how I feel about living in the United States, as a black woman, as a black person,” said Marie.

Incredible. A Black man will likely become President. He and his wife have made hundreds of thousands and done very well for themselves. A Black woman, Oprah Winfrey, is the most influential person in America. A Black man, Will Smith, is the biggest draw at the box office. A Black man dominates golf. Black culture–including Hip-Hop–dominates every realm of American culture.
And this woman doesn’t like America? Leave!
**** UPDATE: Denver-area readers are telling me that this is just the latest attempt to further the racial divide in Denver. Here’s one of the many I’ve received:

Not only did Rene Marie sing “Lift Up Every Voice,” but Wellington Webb, standing on the steps of City Hall once cried out ” … that’s not our Constitution … that’s their Constitution. We have our own Constitution.”
Also, you might enjoy knowing that as a major suspect in the Front Range drug cartel investigations, the Mayor is known by Denver Police Department’s rank and file as Lickenlooper.

And I thought Detroit Mayor Kwame “The Kingpin” Kilpatrick was unique.

This is above all an insult to James Weldon Johnson who would certainly be appalled at the substitution of his great poem for our national anthem.
This was the first black man in Florida to pass the bar exam after Reconstruction, U.S. Consul to Venezuela a poet, anthologist and fighter for civil rights, an erudite and intelligent man who loved classical music AND Jazz. He worked tirelessly to create the first black classical orchestra in the U.S. – a dream come true for blacks who mastered classical instruments and went MAD with frustration having no place to play as no major orchestra would take them! His partner and dear friend in this dream was Ignatz Waghalter a Polish Jew born in extreme poverty himself.
He held his head high through unimaginable degradation and loved this country, loved Western culture and wanted his race to have access to it.
What do you think he would of thought of Madame Obama? Of hip-hop gangsta rap? Of this foul use of his own words?

What happened to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, where all races, creeds, downtrodden, religious expression, sexual preference, and gender could live under one common tenent. FREEDOM. We are the only country where all walks of life have come to live because of that right. Now we have the Black national anthem, In many states you can’t get a job working for state government if you don’t speak spanish, the Mexicans want their own national anthem, the Muslims want well everything, the gays want special rights and privledges, the blacks want well again everything handed to them free of charge. Special interest groups on all sides with their new master and ring leader, the grand poobah of everything we hate about America NoBama wants to destroy everything this country was founded on. No one is stopping these malcontents from well moving back to their country of origin, or moving to a country that already has their interests at heart. A new civil war is brewing in this country and as time has shown all good things must come to an end.(If you are any of the aformentioned above who do love this country please don’t take offense, these are broad generalities not meant for everyone.)

Never been to this sight before. My husband directed me here to give me a laugh this morning. You people are freaks. Especially this Debbie person – tell me, is your Adam’s Apple as large as Mann Coulters?
But I digress…
I wonder if Mr. Schlussel took the time to read the Black National Anthem before this post…had he done so, I am not sure how he could have come to the conclusion that one would sing it because they “don’t like America”…bit of a stretch, there, dontcha think, Mr. Schlussel?
I wonder at how many KKK members have sung our national anthem…does that give them ownership over a SONG somehow?
Where is your reasoning?
I mean, I’m blonde as well, but you are the kind of airhead that created the cliche…geez

DF on July 2, 2008 at 12:21 pm

Hey DF, (wonder what that stands for?)
You are a very good liberal…when you can’t argue a point, you insult.
The fact is, the woman changed our National Anthem.
The Star-Spangled Banner has been good enough for how long now? Obamanation will be a lot of fun.

interestinconundrum on July 2, 2008 at 12:31 pm

Debbie, I agree that in was inappropriate for her to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at an event where it was expected for her to sing the “Star Spangled Banner”, but let’s not get carried away. It is NOT the equivalent of singing a Nazi Anthem to open up an American event. “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was composed in the late 19th century as a song of spiritual uplift for a people recently out of slavery and struggling to make their way. The lyrics say:
Lift ev’ry voice and sing,
‘Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on ’til victory is won.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.
Wow….that really some racist and inflammatory language!!! Right. However, I fully understand in today’s anti-religious PC times, people do froth at the mouth when any song mentioning God and reliance on Him is sung at a government gathering, especially by someone Black. And as far as Louis Farakkan using the song at his gathering, “Amazing Grace” is also sung in supremacist White identity churces, but that takes nothing away from the original intent of the song. As a matter of fact, the Nation of Islam didn’t even exist in 1899 when James Weldon Johnson wrote “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, so the appropriations of spiritual songs by racists does not take away from the beauty and power of their lyrics.
By the way, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was in the National Baptist Hymnal when I was growing up, so as a Christian, I do find it way out of line that you would compare that song to some sort of Nazi anthem.
[JJ: IT’S NOT ABOUT THE WORDS, WHICH I AGREE ARE (MOSTLY) NOT OBJECTIONABLE. IT’S ABOUT WHAT THE SONG HAS COME TO STAND FOR, WHICH IS BLACK SEPARATISM AND RACISM. THE SONG INSTEAD OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM, AND THIS WOMAN’S STATEMENT ABOUT WHY SHE SANG IT, MAKE THAT CLEAR. THE GERMAN NATIONAL ANTHEM, “DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES,” UNDER THE THIRD REICH WASN’T THAT OBJECTIONABLE EITHER. AND IT WAS IN PLACE SINCE 1922, BEFORE THE THIRD REICH. IT’S MUSIC WAS WRITTEN IN 1797, WELL BEFORE THE OFFICIAL NAZI MOVEMENT. IT’S NOT ABOUT THAT. IT’S ABOUT WHO SANG IT AND WHY. DS]

Now that Mayor Hickenlooper and Council President Hancock allowed this to occur without also including the Star Spangled Banner, can we please officially change the name of our country to “United Men of Wimps”.

interestinconundrum on July 2, 2008 at 1:17 pm

This is the greatest country on earth. I wasn’t even born here but I love this country more than a lot of native born Americans do, who seem to treat it very shabbily – like Denver’s John Hickenlooper. Yes, I’m now in Colorado and I thought very poorly of the event. Its not the words that are objectionable (I think they’re quite beautiful too) but I found the deliberate insult to our country in NOT singing our real national anthem too much to bear. I don’t think any of us would like that done to a human being. It shouldn’t be any more acceptable when its done to one’s country. Its just too much to expect liberals to show decent behavior towards the country in which they live. I’m with Debbie when she says if you don’t love America, leave! True patriotism I ought to add, isn’t about explaining it to others. A husband doesn’t have to explain his love for his wife and a patriot shouldn’t have to explain how he feels about his country. Its self-evident. That means love without substitution or qualification. Today’s Democrats seem incapable of doing that where America is concerned. We all expected better than this on the eve of our country’s birthday, July the Fourth.

NormanF on July 2, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I have no problem with the words. I have a problem with the fact that this so called artist was deceptive and disrespectful toward the country whose largess probably put her thru college or music school.
The fact that the ugliness that is racism tries to hide itself behind words whose intent are the opposite is disgusting and deceptive.
This ‘artist’ is first and foremost a liar. And I would be very hesitant to hire her to perform at any event, seeing as I’d have no way to know what she planned on performing.
And Wellington Webb. I lived in Denver when he was Mayor. “Lickenlooper” doesn’t suprise me in the least.

kozanne on July 2, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Interestinconundrum ask:
What native land to you have in mind? That’s a legit question. Given that James Weldon Johnson was born in the United States and wrote this at the beginning of the 20th century, a time when Blacks were struggling against trememdous odds to be included in the fabric of America (the theme of the song is faith and struggle), I can only assume he was encouraging Black folks to remain true to their native land of America despite their tribulations. He was a pretty incredible guy…in 1897,he was the first Black admitted to the Florida Bar since reconstruction, he started a school for Black kids in Jacksonville, Florida in 1906, and had a lifetime of tremendous accomplishment. Given that, I may have to concede to Debbie the point of how his song has been used, because it was appropriated by the NAACP in the 1930s and renamed “The Negro National Anthem”, and that’s how I knew it when singing it in the church choir as a youth.
By the way, take a look at the lyrics to “The Star Spangled Banner”:
O! say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Notice Francis Scott Key never mentioned a specific country when referring to “the land of the free and the home of the brave”, but given the circumstances under which the song was written, we all know he was talking about America. I assume the same when reading Johnson’s lyrics….

When I saw the post by DF–I thought WTF this is a DF for sure. What a moron.
As time rolls on, we have more of a free-4-all everyday. We have now redefined marriage to anything goes–today a person with their same sex partner–tomorrow it will be a person and their appointed other (child, animal, vehcicle, whatever). Now we consider CO2 a pollutant–everytime we exhale, we are polluting.
I say leave the national anthem alone. If you want to sing a song like this–don’t substitute such a version for the very reasons Debbie points out here. The analogy to what happened in Nazi Germany is worth keeping in view. We can’t keep allowing subversives (well intentioned or otherwise) to keep robbing us of our national heritage.
Kids growing up in today’s world have a lot against them. Unless they have parents who have their heads on straight and who can/will point out all the non-sense for them to avoid out there–parents who are vigilant to de-program what their kids get at public school and on TV in “values”— these kids are doomed to a brave new world that looks a lot like San Francisco, Amsterdam, Las Vegas and Sodom and Gomorrah. This “anthem” is another step to getting there sooner.

BB on July 2, 2008 at 4:15 pm

The “Black National Anthem,” who’d thunk, or is this a preview of Hussein Obama’s coming attractions/changes. Sorry Anita, can’t buy into you’re black liberation crap of excuses. NOBODY has an excuse to debase the United States.
BTW DF, shove yourself up Calypso Louie’s arse, because that’s where you obviously belong!

Jackson Pearson on July 2, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Of course I agree that it is inappropriate, to say the least to sing the Black National Anthem (sic — if blacks live in the United States the Star Spangled Banner should be thought of as their national anthem if they are not traitors) at these types of events. But I’m not sure that the singing of Lift Every Voice, or even its unsavory connotations is the worst part of it, bad as that is.
I think the worst part is the explicit rejection of our real national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner. The idea of which song to tie or allegiance to has succumbed to relativism, like many other things in our society. Maybe a Polish, or Mexican, or French gathering in this country should sing a different song.
Comments like DF’s just show these creeps in Denver & similar places that they can get away with this, because most people’s thought processes & ability to think logically are so abysmal.

c f on July 2, 2008 at 5:19 pm

We see it in day-to-day life, but we are not suppose to say it, and if we say it we are called “politically incorrect” and “racists.”
But I’ll say it and don’t give a damn because it’s the Truth:
Most, if not all, Blacks are racists.
And this election season is the clearest manifestation of the racism and hate that Blacks have towards White people.

Independent Conservative on July 2, 2008 at 6:19 pm

First of all….I don’t know who the hell thinks this song is the black national anthem. I’m posting to say IT IS NOT MY NATIONAL ANTHEM, and yes I’m black and I’m sick of having to remind everyone of this when I post.
The national anthem is the star spangled banner. Ether sing the f—ing song or get the f— off the damn stage and get the f— out of my country…NOW.
I am this angry right now (due to some crap with pizza hut yesterday), and the last thing I needed was another issue that involved race, racism, and anti-americanism.
Anita Baker, your one of my favorite all-time singers. Shut the f— up and do what your paid to do…sing wonderful songs. Loius Farrakan’t, you haven’t been relevant in more than 15 years now. No one cares what you have to say anymore to the real black america.
And for people who side with the pro-afro lennist, you don’t speak for all blacks on this issue. Many of us from the real black america take great offense whenever someone uses race to crap on america. In this case…the star spangled banner which I’m playing right now with the sound up.
Like I said….sing the damn song that you were brought in to sing, or get off the f—ing stage and let someone with a shread of respect sing the national anthem.
And to the last poster, give me a break. Not all black people are racists. You just read comments from me…what does that tell you? Or am I an oreo cookie and I shouldn’t exist becuase I am a threat to the Obamist movement?

Yes, most Blacks hate White people and I see it personally every day.
And those Blacks who love Whites are doing it for butt-kissing purposes, especially in the workplace.

Nice song but it’s not the national anthem. It’s a safe guess this this nonsense reflects preemptive ‘CHANGE’. It’s pretty confusing because there’s a U.S. Military color guard amidst this obvious denial of nationalism.
Denver Mayor John Hickenloper has lost his marbles. Pandering knows no limits. Get ready for the Hussein Assylum!

This is blatant sedition. No doubt about it.
just look at her quote: “When I decided [she takes responsibility] to sing my version [my version?!], what was going on in my head was: ‘I want to express how I feel about living in the United States [just the living part], as a black woman [separate], as a black person [screw the rest of you].” That’s sedition.
We LDS had an anthem for Deseret, before Johnston’s army marched in. If I went to our city building and sang that instead of the national anthem – I’d get pounded and shot by the non-LDS folks for not respecting their feelings.
If these guys don’t want to be American’s, then the border is every which way. Don’t forget to shut the door behind you!

We have enough enemies to fight without this crap to deal with.

bhparkman on July 2, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Independent Conservative,
Man, PLEASE!!! Stating false assumptions like “Most Black people are racists” and saying “Most Blacks hate White people..I see it every day” is absolutely irresponsible. Just people you think you see it every day does not make it so…the world is composed of much more than what you see and experience. Don’t put on me (or my conservative counterpart Squirrel3D) the burden of being a hater and a racist just because of the color of our skin. I think you’re an example of people seeing what they want to see in order to justify their own negative feelings (They hate us so it’s okay to hate them! I saw Black militants pull this stunt all the time in my younger days…I know the game.)
You mentioned the workplace…just how are people supposed to act in the workplace? Are we supposed to be civil and cooperative in order to get work done, ensure our organization is a success and get promotions and payraises so we can continue to put a roof over our heads or food on the table, or would you rather the workplace resemble a federal prison? A professional is SUPPOSED to be on their best behavior in the workplace, no matter what their skin color. I could care less how my White co-workers feel about Black folks when they get home…all that matters is that I treat them with respect and cordiality in the workplace and they do the same with me.
“Hate” and “racists” are strong words that should not be used lightly. As I’ve stated before, most Black folks, just like other Americans, are too busy trying to avoid layoffs, pay bills, negotiate rising gas and food prices, save for the kids college fund, deal with aging parents, and handling medical issues to get all wrapped up in hate. You give yourself too much credit…most Black folks are too busy trying to survive and thrive rather than being wasting energy on hating White folks. And by the way, maybe those “Blacks who love Whites” are doing so because of their religious faith, and/or maybe they’re genuinely good people…being nice and treating people right does not necessarily mean you’re a butt-kisser. It may mean…gasp..that you’re actually a decent human being! I DO NOT wish to live in whatever world your mindset has placed you in…that is a terrible way to live one’s life.

JibberJabber on July 2, 2008 at 9:03 pm

If Barack Obey-Me! gets elected, there’s no question that the black racsists will make it the new Anthem, deliberately. Then ,if a White singer tries to sing “The Star Spangled Banner” at some event, with a black audience, expecting to hear their “anthem”? OFF WITH THAT INFIDELS’ HEAD!!!!
“Blacks can’t be racist because they don’t have the power”? This racist bitch had all the power and freedom she/it? wanted, and Whitey didn’t lynch her,did they?
WHAT “Racism”?
WHAT “Oppression”?

OldSchoolW on July 2, 2008 at 11:21 pm

If I were in the audience with my hand over my heart I would immediately cross my arms across my chest much like B.O. did for the real national anthem. I would also belt out the real one from memory to destroy the nation of islam anthem, that I have no respect for. Also I don’t much like the way a lot of blacks sing the real anthem. Wiggling the voice and showing range makes it impossible for the audience to sing along if they so choose. Keep it simple stupid.

samurai on July 3, 2008 at 1:00 am

To JibberJabber,
You say that “Blacks are too busy to (whatever) than wasting energy on hating White folks.”
Now that’s the funniest argument I have ever read.
It summarizes in one line all what you typed.
Thanks for the laugh.

Independent Conservative on July 3, 2008 at 2:50 am

Independent Conservative,
Well what’s not laughable is your hatred and stereotyping of a whole race based on your own limited experience. But it happens all the time on this site and other media. If Debbie features a White person who does something stupid, you rarely if ever see any post attacking or stereotyping the whole White race based on that one person’s actions. You may see posts attacking liberals or Hollywood actors or some other such group, but rarely is the person’s race attacked.
But let Debbie post a story about a Black person doing something stupid like this loon in Denver and the reaction is always predictable….the whole Black race is attacked and painted with a broad brush. I am simply incredulous with what I’m hearing on talk radio and reading on the Internet regarding this incident. How in the hell are ALL Black people at fault because some singer in Denver foolishly decided to “experiment” with the National Anthem? SHE deserves criticism and rebuke, not Black people as a whole. Black singers are commissioned to sing the National Anthem at events across the country every day and do it as written…why are we all of a sudden being vilified because one knucklehead out of a thousand decides to do her own thing?
The same thing happened with the Jeremiah Wright incident. ALL Black churches were tarred and feathered with the same brush because of what was going on at Trinity in Chicago. All Black Baptist, Methodist, Congregationalist, Word of Faith, Pentecostal, AME, UME, and other denomincations were all put under the same umbrella by folks because of that incident. It seems no one had the critical thinking skills to realize that there are as many different kinds of churches as their are people and the actions of one church should not define a whole race.
I hope you are thanking GOD every day that you can operate in America as an “Indepedent” conservative. As a Black man in America, I cannot operate indepedently….because I know that whatever actions I take will be used to judge the race as a whole. Because of people like you, if I screw up on my job, you can bet the hiring manager won’t be hiring any more Black folks anytime soon if he/she can help it. Because of people who think like you, if I do something stupid or badly, it’s not only my mistake…ALL Black people must be held accountable. And because of people like you, if some addle-brained singer in Denver purposely screws up the National Anthem, I and other Black folks must be blamed and held responsible. Somehow her foolish attempt at musical experimentation is now evidence of the seething hatred all we Blacks folks have of White people. The whole incident has been overblown. Yes, she screwed up badly. Just give the sista a big fat “NEGRO, PLEASE!!” award and let’s move on….
So yes, thank GOD every day that YOU as an “Indepedent” Conservative don’t have to carry the burden of a whole race on your shoulders each and every day….and I hope to GOD that people aren’t judging the whole White race based on your actions and statements!

JibberJabber on July 3, 2008 at 11:35 am

For once I agree with JibberJabber.
Look man, your as independant a conservative as the feces that comes out of the ass of my cat Tammy.
To sit there on your $2 dollar chair and go with this false assumption of all blacks being racists based only on a few incidents shows that your a closed minded f—tard.
Have you really talked to any black person within the last 3 months? I doubt you have based on your stupidity and blindness towards black americans. Your doing exactly what the black racists are doing, and that’s being a ignorant biased closed minded douchebag.
What the f— kind of person do you think I am? Do you see me listening to rap music, just becuase I’m a young 25 year old guy? Do I look like I’m “pimping” or acting like a “thug”? Do you think I praise pieces of s— like Al Sharpton or Jeremiah Wright who think they speak for all blacks in america? You’d be damn suprised at what kind of person I am. And oh by the way, the reason I don’t have but 1 or 2 percent black friends is becuase most…NOT ALL…think I’m “too white” for them.
So dude, you can go to hell….becuase at the end of the day, I’M A F—ING AMERICAN TOO REGUARDLESS OF WHAT COLOR I AM!! I’m an american flag waving son of a b—-, and just saying that alone offends blacks who support Obama.
I suggest you start looking outside your own bubble and outside your own town/city/whatever before you start saying the things you said. Oh and another thing, just becuase some blacks like hip hop and such doesn’t make them all ignorant and racist. I happen to know one who likes me just the way I am.
I’m dying to hear your response to this, so that we all can see your true colors, f—tard.

It is YOUR so-called culture that black troglodites are dominating – because you long ago bowed to them, you white slaves, lowering yourself to watch movies with W. Smith, open racist, repulsive both in his inner and outer aspect, and flocking in brainless masses to the stadiums to watch black monsters playing basketball – and paying them your bloody, sweaty, dollars. Who you are after that? – It’s right that blacks will smash you to the pulp – in your present condition this is the only possible outcome for you, the whites. For you forgot, abandoned, betrayed your civilization to please ugly black frankensteins with their ugly – yes, – ugly disproportional facemufflers with bloated eyes and bubbling lips. Pay your property taxes for young black hooligans that they may get whatever affirmative education on your money and safely beat and kill your kids, as they so often practice – and why not, if the racist American law protects them with such fatherly affection? Enjoy, you, who routinely publicly betray and smear your refined hellenistic culture to prove your allegiance to the black “brother” in USA.
Fortunately, there where I live, I see every day all positive signs of growing unity of all non-blacks, including whites of every layer and demonimation, any latinos, and the majority of asians, against this common threat, menacing all us more and more with every their new generation, that grows more racist, aggressive and murderous.
Whatever differences and frictions we, all non-blacks, have, they are so insignificant against black vandals, that we have nothing sensible, preventing us to be united in our rightful hatred of victims to their offenders.
Better now to state not “blacks against whites” but rather “blacks against all non-blacks”. Even Muslim “brothers” of black Muslims – Arabs, Muslim Indians and Pakistanis – hate them till their last breath. Have any doubts? – try dig it yourself.
