Sunday Summer Fun: New Weird Ice Cream Flavors Hit the Market

By Debbie Schlussel

So, technically, it isn’t summer yet. But, weatherwise, it’s here and so are summer treats. I rarely eat ice cream because of the sugar and calories involved, but I find these new, unusual flavors interesting and would probably try them once (except the one with bacon in it–not kosher).  It’s the strange flavors that are apparently where the real fight in the ice cream world begins and ends:

Seven in 10 consumers buy vanilla, chocolate or strawberry, says Howard Waxman, editor of Ice Cream Reporter, but the remaining three in 10 are “where the real battle for profitability is fought.”

Some summer ice cream oddities:

French Toast. Later this summer, Baskin-Robbins will roll out the ice cream with bits of French toast and maple. “Customers love knowing they can get a sample, then get their favorites,” executive chef Stan Frankenthaler says.

Buttered Popcorn. In August, MaggieMoo’s debuts a flavor with butter pecan and caramel popcorn. “This gets people in the door,” says Hilliard Creath, R&D manager.

Strawberry Basil. It’s the first time Cold Stone has put an herb into an ice cream, taste master Ray Karam says.

Late Night Snack. The Late Night With Jimmy Fallon host helped develop Ben & Jerry’s flavor made with chocolate-covered potato chips and caramel. “He suggested pizza, but we thought that sounded gross,” says Alison Gilbert, brand manager.

Mojito Sorbet. There’s no rum in it, but the new Cold Stone flavor, due in August, is made with mint and lime.

Firehouse 31. Anyone who has felt the heat of an Atomic Fireball will appreciate this Baskin-Robbins flavor that crushes a fiery candy into its ice cream.

Creole Cream Cheese. Made with a cream-cheese-like base and a spicy kick, it hits Baskin-Robbins this summer.

Maple Bacon Sundae. Denny’s is selling the sundae made with vanilla ice cream, maple syrup and bacon bits. Alas, a side of pancakes doesn’t come with it.

Hey, a great treat. to serve all of your “moderate” Muslim buddies.

Flushing New York’s Max & Mina’s Homemade Ice Cream and Ices has some pretty unusual flavors, including Beer, Babka, Corn on the Cob, Beef Stew, and Lox (those last two sound kinda disgusting). M&M’s is kosher for those of my readers who observe the Jewish dietary laws as I do.  I’ve never been there, but several of my relatives have (including my late dad), and they’ve said it’s really good ice cream . . . even the weird flavors.

Also, check out “101 Frightening Ice Cream Flavors From Around the World.”  As you probably guessed, they are mostly from Asian countries.  And, then, there is also the disgusting Muslim world offering:  camel’s milk ice cream.  Eeuuww.

When Jihad Cindy #2 a/k/a Cindy Sheehan’s Marxist friends at Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream temporarily changed the name of “Chubby Hubby” to “Hubby Hubby”–in support of gay marriage–I thought of a few other gay ice cream flavors they should have created.  I’d add to that “One-Eyed Bin Laden Surprise”:  vanilla with lots of exploding pop rocks, raspberry swirls for the blood, marshmallows for the missing eye, chocolate ribbons in honor of Bin Laden’s unrequited love for crack whore Whitney Houston, and chocolate turtles to symbolize some of the sea life swimming around his underwater corpse.

And then, there’s also my other creation:  Baracky Road Economy, the Barack Obama flavor that’s half chocolate, half vanilla, a little bit o’ Irish, little bit o’ “my grandfather or uncle or someone liberated Auschwitz.” and a whole lotta pits from half-eated cherries.  It’s halal and comes in two sizes: Congressman Weiner and Medium.  The ice cream leaks and is a little moldy because all containers have pre-1967 borders.

What’s the weirdest, coolest, most unusual, and/or most interesting ice cream flavor you’ve ever tried?

I am assuming that the Anthony Weiner size is extra small? The Bin Laden flavor comes with the new drink bearing the same name. Two shots with a splash of water! Have a great Shavuos, a time to eat all of these ice cream flavors, except the treif ones.

How fun! I really like weird flavours….well, not the Firehouse 31 (I hate hot flavours) and Creole Cream Cheese is just YUCK for me (however, I do appreciate the creativity!).

Would love to try the Bacon one, the French Toast and the Popcorn. So inventive.

I get bored with boring flavours, but if the Sweet Cream is really rich tasting, my fav is Sweet Cream with chocolate jimmies. And Peanut Butter is my favourite.

I’ll try all of them (‘cept the ones I don’t like). Creativity and variety rules!

Oh, I forgot to post my weird favourites….

I do love cake batter…or oreo cake batter. Just with jimmies. Or Turkey Farm’s Party Cake flavour. Friendly’s used to put out a peanut butter and fluff flavour (yummo!) and Ben and Jerry’s has a now moribund “Peanut Butter and Jelly” flavour…unfortunately, it’s even in their dead flavour graveyard in Vermont. 🙁

Right now, I love peanut butter frozen yogurt (soft) with peanut butter sauce on top.

The weirdest flav I heard of had habanero chilis in it. I just hate spicy stuff.

How about a couple new flavors honoring gays and muslims for Ben & Jerry’s :

To honor gays – “Baby Batter Surprise” (with nuts and bananas)

To show muslim outreach –

A new “Gays for Palestine”, “Gallows-For-Gays-Under-muslim-Rule ” with licorice rope for making the hanging noose and peanut brittle planks for building gallows to execute gays which muslim doctrine orders.

I don’t eat ice cream for the same reason as you “because of the sugar and calories involved”. At my age I have to maintain my studly physique….but I will have some cheese cake from time to time.

I’d like an Israel ice cream…. blue and white with star of david candied sprinkles.

It would be kinda fun!

I know that my Dad, paternal granny and epinomynous paternal grampy (all of most blessed memory) would all slap me silly on the upside of the head for saying – nay, even contemplating – this, but I’d go for maple bacon sundae – blame it on YouTube’s EpicMealTime channel (hard core food-pr0n for all the haters).

Too bad Baskin-Robbins is no longer in my neck of wood. 🙁

“One-Eyed Bin Laden Surprise”: actually… this sounds pretty good. I would order it just to piss some people off.

American palates have been destroyed by artificial chemicalized pseudofoods, this list of horrors bears testimony to that. The food in the USA is one of the worst aspects of living there, in the urban areas there are huge chemicalized supermarkets with not a bite of decent food to eat, and in the countryside and when traveling there is nothing but various vomitous junk food outlets…

randy on June 6, 2011 at 12:09 am

I actually agree with randy. For once, I’d like to see the ice cream being made. I’d love to see more organic foods out there. And it would be great if everyone learned how to cook.

In the meantime, go lighten up for once. Life is too short to take seriously because no-one gets out of it alive.

Instead of a plain old ice cream bar, everyone should try the Allahu Ak-BAR!!! I have to admit that I stole that one.

Instead of strawberry, how about straw-burqa?

CornCoLeo on June 6, 2011 at 1:58 am

Instead of wild or dark cherry, wild or dark sharia.

CornCoLeo on June 6, 2011 at 2:00 am

Randy you have a point there. One of the key ingredients in ice cream is milk. And there has been a controversy over raw milk and how the gubmint wants to take our freedoms away by forcing us to consume milk with pesticides and HGH etc.

And food these days is chemicals. Chief reason…COST! It’s more expensive to have fresh ingredients not to mention an overbearing government who does not want us growing fresh produce as it ruins their prospect of the NWO. Guess it also ruins the big wigs chances of buying a Government Motors car like a Cadillac.

As for Ben & Jerry’s…I HAVE BOYCOTTED THOSE GLOBALIST OBOTS FROM MY VOCAB!

And in terms of exotic ice cream flavors, well Deb can call me a girlieman. The only exotic I have tried is cookies and cream or Oreo cookie as some put it. That is my weakness flavor. Guess in terms of ice cream, I go with what brought me to the dance.

As an American of Italian heritage, perhaps I could appreciate the Strawberry Basil. Because basil is a sweet herb somewhat. Though I associate it more with putting it in salads, making pesto or putting some into tomato sauce, what we call gravy.

Now in terms of “Baracky Road Economy”, wonder if you need to show your birth certificate or Selective Service papers to buy it…JUST SAYIN’!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My son ordered the Denny’s Maple Bacon sundae the other day and I couldn’t resist tasting it. Just the ice cream and the bacon actually worked OK (the bacon was basically incinerated cardboard, but the salt was an interesting contrast to the ice cream), but the maple syrup killed it – way too gunky.

L'Angelo Misterioso on June 6, 2011 at 8:31 am

Randy, I also agree with you.

I stay away from milk and milk-based products (i.e.- Ice cream) in general due to the amount of hormones given to the cows which are passed on in the milk. Young girls who drink milk on a regular basis start having periods a bit too early (some as early as eight years old). I, personally, drink rice milk and go organic as much as possibly can do… though I need my occasional coffee from my favorite coffee shop.

BLUE BELL ICE CREAM made in Brenham, Texas is the best that I have found. Coconut Fudge is out for the first time this summer. It’s not an unusual flavor but it’s the best Blue Bell flavor that I have ever tasted. It has to account for at least 50% of the weight that I have gained in the last two months!

Bonzer Wolf on June 6, 2011 at 10:42 am

Border-line diabetic so I don’t eat as much ice cream as I used to. BLUE BELL Banana Pudding (banana ice cream w/vanilla wafers blended in). I’d pour, not drizzle, chocolate syrup on top.

CornCoLeo on June 6, 2011 at 11:25 am

It is time for some Tillamook Ice Cream, love the coffee flavors

Time Wave on June 6, 2011 at 1:27 pm

I indulged one night at Denny’s and got that Maple and Bacon Sundae, yeah the syrup does put it over the top sugar wise, but the flavor of maple bacon and ice cream was quite interesting.

David B on June 6, 2011 at 10:30 pm

That pic is from Max and Mina’s and everything there is 100% kosher.
Who else would offer munn (poppy seed) ice cream?

ari-free on June 7, 2011 at 12:48 am

Right back @ CornCoLeo…

I’m type-2, but the horrible fact doesn’t stop me from enjoying some of that cool, iced-cow-cream-crack-coaine delight under a merciless summer sunshine. It’s more of an F-You to my disease(s) and the heat. Enjoy what there is.

And BTW – I read somewhere that balsamic vinegar goes well with certain ice-moo flavours. I might as well experiment. Mwaahaahaahaa!
