Sunday Summer Fun: New Weird Ice Cream Flavors Hit the Market
So, technically, it isn’t summer yet. But, weatherwise, it’s here and so are summer treats. I rarely eat ice cream because of the sugar and calories involved, but I find these new, unusual flavors interesting and would probably try them once (except the one with bacon in it–not kosher). It’s the strange flavors that are apparently where the real fight in the ice cream world begins and ends:
Seven in 10 consumers buy vanilla, chocolate or strawberry, says Howard Waxman, editor of Ice Cream Reporter, but the remaining three in 10 are “where the real battle for profitability is fought.”
Some summer ice cream oddities:
•French Toast. Later this summer, Baskin-Robbins will roll out the ice cream with bits of French toast and maple. “Customers love knowing they can get a sample, then get their favorites,” executive chef Stan Frankenthaler says.
•Buttered Popcorn. In August, MaggieMoo’s debuts a flavor with butter pecan and caramel popcorn. “This gets people in the door,” says Hilliard Creath, R&D manager.
•Strawberry Basil. It’s the first time Cold Stone has put an herb into an ice cream, taste master Ray Karam says.
•Late Night Snack. The Late Night With Jimmy Fallon host helped develop Ben & Jerry’s flavor made with chocolate-covered potato chips and caramel. “He suggested pizza, but we thought that sounded gross,” says Alison Gilbert, brand manager.
•Mojito Sorbet. There’s no rum in it, but the new Cold Stone flavor, due in August, is made with mint and lime.
•Firehouse 31. Anyone who has felt the heat of an Atomic Fireball will appreciate this Baskin-Robbins flavor that crushes a fiery candy into its ice cream.
•Creole Cream Cheese. Made with a cream-cheese-like base and a spicy kick, it hits Baskin-Robbins this summer.
•Maple Bacon Sundae. Denny’s is selling the sundae made with vanilla ice cream, maple syrup and bacon bits. Alas, a side of pancakes doesn’t come with it.
Hey, a great treat. to serve all of your “moderate” Muslim buddies.
Flushing New York’s Max & Mina’s Homemade Ice Cream and Ices has some pretty unusual flavors, including Beer, Babka, Corn on the Cob, Beef Stew, and Lox (those last two sound kinda disgusting). M&M’s is kosher for those of my readers who observe the Jewish dietary laws as I do. I’ve never been there, but several of my relatives have (including my late dad), and they’ve said it’s really good ice cream . . . even the weird flavors.
Also, check out “101 Frightening Ice Cream Flavors From Around the World.” As you probably guessed, they are mostly from Asian countries. And, then, there is also the disgusting Muslim world offering: camel’s milk ice cream. Eeuuww.
When Jihad Cindy #2 a/k/a Cindy Sheehan’s Marxist friends at Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream temporarily changed the name of “Chubby Hubby” to “Hubby Hubby”–in support of gay marriage–I thought of a few other gay ice cream flavors they should have created. I’d add to that “One-Eyed Bin Laden Surprise”: vanilla with lots of exploding pop rocks, raspberry swirls for the blood, marshmallows for the missing eye, chocolate ribbons in honor of Bin Laden’s unrequited love for crack whore Whitney Houston, and chocolate turtles to symbolize some of the sea life swimming around his underwater corpse.
And then, there’s also my other creation: Baracky Road Economy, the Barack Obama flavor that’s half chocolate, half vanilla, a little bit o’ Irish, little bit o’ “my grandfather or uncle or someone liberated Auschwitz.” and a whole lotta pits from half-eated cherries. It’s halal and comes in two sizes: Congressman Weiner and Medium. The ice cream leaks and is a little moldy because all containers have pre-1967 borders.

I am assuming that the Anthony Weiner size is extra small? The Bin Laden flavor comes with the new drink bearing the same name. Two shots with a splash of water! Have a great Shavuos, a time to eat all of these ice cream flavors, except the treif ones.
