Another Bill Clinton Dividend: Throat Cancer Rises in Men

By Debbie Schlussel

When the Bill Clinton impeachment hearings were going on, the Wall Street Journal did a story about one of his lasting “contributions” to American culture: because of the whole Monica Lewinsky saga, thong underwear became hip beyond porn movies and strip joints. That was the Clinton contribution to fashion, but his real lasting contribution may be the recent increase in throat cancer in men. Remember when Bill Clinton said oral sex isn’t sex?

“I Did Not Have ‘Sex’ With That Woman, Ms. Lewinsky.”

When I read the story, this morning, the first thing I thought of when I read the headline, “Throat Cancer Linked to Virus,” and the first paragraph about how the cancer is linked to HPV, the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, is that it’s probably because of an increase in oral sex. Bill Clinton dismissed it as not sex and something far more casual and less intimate. Thereafter, the numbers of people engaged in it went up. And with the feminist ethos that now dominates America (including in the Republican Party), the women insist on being, um, “equally serviced” (Bill Clinton’s cigar is no longer enough). Thus, the increase in throat cancer for men. And the scientists agree with me. Well, some of their findings do. Look at the years for when HPV-related throat cancer in men went up: 1988-2004. Yes, four years before Clinton/Monica and many years during and beyond.

Plus, the increase in this cancer in men versus a decrease in cervical cancer for women is a stark reflection in the disproportionate federal and private money spent on research and treatment of female-dominated cancers (breast cancer, cervical cancer) versus that spent on male-related (testicular, HPV throat) cancers and other non-gender specific cancers (pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, etc.).

A sharp rise in a type of throat cancer among men is increasingly being linked to HPV, the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus that can cause cervical cancer in women.

A new study from the National Cancer Institute warns that if recent trends continue, the number of HPV-positive oral cancers among men could rise by nearly 30% by 2020. At that rate, it could surpass that of cervical cancers among women, which are expected to decline as a result of better screening.

The study is to be presented this week at the annual American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting.

Between 1988 and 2004, the researchers found, the incidence of HPV-positive oropharynx cancers—those that affect the back of the tongue and tonsil area—increased by 225%. Anil Chaturvedi, a National Cancer Institute investigator who led the research, estimates there were approximately 6,700 cases of HPV-positive oropharynx cancers in 2010, up from 4,000 to 4,500 in 2004, and cases are projected to increase 27% to 8,500 in 2020.

Recent studies show about 25% of mouth and 35% of throat cancers are caused by HPV, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Men account for the majority of cases, and currently the highest prevalence is in men 40 to 55, says Eric Genden, chief of head and neck oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. Studies have shown that the cancer can show up 10 years after exposure to HPV, which has become the most common sexually transmitted virus in the U.S.

“We are sitting at the cusp of a pandemic,” says Dr. Genden. . . .

Researchers say it isn’t clear why men are at higher risk for HPV-positive oral cancers. But for both men and women a high lifetime number of sex partners is associated with the cancer.

Changes in sexual behaviors that include increased practice of oral sex are associated with the increase, but a 2007 New England Journal of Medicine article also said engagement in casual sex, early age at first intercourse, and infrequent use of condoms each were associated with HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer. Mouth-to-mouth contact through kissing can’t be ruled out as a transmission route.

Most infections don’t cause symptoms and go away on their own. But HPV can cause genital warts and warts in the throat, and has been associated with vaginal, vulvar and anal cancers.

Unfortunately, all this data is being used by the makers of Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, to push the states to force boys to be vaccinated, as many have done with young girls. Very sad. And very statist. And there’s no proof it can effectively prevent this type of throat cancer.

“….We’re on a cusp of a pandemic.”

You mean ANOTHER one?

While there was some official sounding Science-speak
I didn’t see any actually studies to support the conclusions.

Assumptions made from statistics are NOT the same a scientific method.

Just saying.

Theory on why men are more affected (as tactfully as possible)—

While women may insist that the male remove himself before subjecting her to body fluids, he cannot reciprocate the act without direct contact with her body fluids.

peter on May 31, 2011 at 4:26 pm

Promiscuity, not oral or vaginal sex itself, is the cause of the spread of venereal disease. Clinton certainly devalued sex and relationships.

Clinton’s true impeachable offense was not lying under oath, but having a mistress uglier than his wife.

Jonathan E. Grant on May 31, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Now, Jonathan, stop picking on poor Monica.

Truly, Clinton contributed to a massive decline in morals, which weren’t that high to begin with. A poltroon.

Occam's Tool on May 31, 2011 at 5:06 pm

OT, she wasn’t poor… if you mean in the sense of being an innocent victim – and to tell you the truth, my comment to Jon reflected my embarrassment at that kind of behavior. I was taken aback when it happened and when someone does something wrong, they aren’t being a role model. The Hebrew word “zonah” means prostitute and there’s a line a good Jew shouldn’t cross. Sleeping with a married person is one of them and I didn’t think much of her father who wasn’t offended by her conduct. I would be if she had been my daughter. So Jon and I aren’t picking on her at all since she was as much responsible for her own behavior as the President was for his own. What in the world were they thinking?

NormanF on May 31, 2011 at 10:26 pm

      Dear Norman,

      my apologies.

The “picking on” comment was tongue firmly THROUGH cheek.

      I admire your blog comments.

      Occam's Tool on June 2, 2011 at 3:10 pm

@Grant; Here,Here.

Clinton also allowed for young girls who wanted to remain virgins the means to satisfy the boys in the back of the classroom using their faces instead of their vaginas. He was truly the worst human being to ever put in the publics eye, I said this in ’92 and it still goes now. We still give him an outlet for speeches and he just won’t go away. Even with his wife now in politics it helps prop him up equally. His true crime was selling nuclear secrets to China which he should’ve been shot for as well as impeached. Because of him we’ll be fighting many more wars to come.

Anthony on May 31, 2011 at 5:12 pm

    that’s right anthony

and those top secret nuke techs
were sold for $30 million of
    illegal campaign contributions
    which were received but never
    accounted for again

    it just plain disappeared
    no paper trail

    the lewinsky thing was probably
    contrived to distract
    the already compliant msm
    from investigating the bribe

I have an uncle who was just diagnosed a couple of weeks ago with throat cancer (non-smoker, non-drinker). And yes, he slept around a lot. My parents are helping him while he is being treated. And now I have another reason to think about vaccinating my boys against HPV. I don’t like that they don’t know whether it will help prevent throat cancer though. I have been wondering about having them vaccinated for a couple years now and really don’t know what to do.

Karen on May 31, 2011 at 5:32 pm

Why are more men than women getting this type of throat cancer?

Ah, dare I mention that gay men engage in oral sex?

LindaF on May 31, 2011 at 6:13 pm

Here is why more men get this disease than women.

The vagina constantly, when aroused, secretes fluids. There are so many blood vessels, mucus membranes, etc., creating a warm damp environment purfect for spreading disease.

A man’s penis does not secrete fluid, except when a man ejaculates. Women (or Barney Frank) who do not complete oral sex, or who spit out the seed after completion of the act do not have as long an exposure to viruses and bacteria in the secretion as men do.

Jonathan E. Grant on May 31, 2011 at 6:25 pm

Jon, the biological facts you recited are just common sense. Debbie might have added the makers of Gardasil are not only being statist nannies, they enable the kind of behavior they want to prevent. If self-destructive behavior could be cured with a pill, we wouldn’t have the need for religion and moral laws. They would be redundant.

In fact, the reason we do need G-d is there is no cure for evil and if you think about it carefully, faith is like inoculative therapy for the soul. Its not just the body that we need to tend to. What you don’t see can often be more damaging than the physical symptoms. The ancients were right that good health is more than just a matter of getting treated by your doctor.

NormanF on May 31, 2011 at 10:50 pm

Yessir, the liberal lifestyle is giving us all kinds of new diseases, or making rare diseases more common. There are the sexual diseases, and also the diseases from all the illegal aliens.

Little Al on May 31, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Its dangerous to perform this act on most woman anyway since you don’t know what she was doing earlier that day, yesterday or an hour before, nor who she was with, so women may demand it more these days but I’ll pass.

Koeteus on May 31, 2011 at 9:18 pm

Promiscuity can damage people. Debbie isn’t just taking about the health implications here. There’s more than one kind of health we all have to attend to. It seems people no longer care much about that, even though they should. What I am trying to get to I guess, is that throat cancer is just the tip of the iceberg. Do people want to honestly confront it?

The statistics seem to say “no.” Talk about the sins of the flesh we are all heir to – and no, I don’t make light of it. I have enough experience to know sex is very serious matter. People would be both healthier and happier if they accorded it that kind of respect.

NormanF on May 31, 2011 at 10:07 pm

      “Promiscuity can damage people.”
You are so right. Take a look at how people dress and treat one another. Too much sex, too much food, too much everything. I call this “pleasure fatigue”. Wanting really is more satisfying than having.

Perry Palmer on June 1, 2011 at 9:52 am

People defended Clinton’s right to cheat on his wife and they excused his breaking the law to do it. If a public official wanted another woman or a harem, it was no big deal for most of the country. A man is entitled and even if it also broke sexual harassment laws, the episode showed some men were more equal than others. Back then, I was younger and maybe more naive but I still thought a man shouldn’t behave that way and shouldn’t take advantage of a woman to satisfy his own selfish needs. Not that I ever thought Lewinsky was a victim. As a young adult woman, she knew what she was doing and the fact she was Jewish, didn’t excuse her behavior. Maybe I have the wrong expectations when I was critical of that and still am and for the record, I don’t think sexuality is just a matter of private behavior. Who we sleep with reflects on others close to us, to the world and to G-d. It can show us in our worst or in our best light.

That said, the legal resolution of that scandal didn’t exactly redeem Clinton for the country. And you can all guess the fate of his would-be mistress in the aftermath of that tawdry affair.

NormanF on May 31, 2011 at 10:00 pm

So, muff diving causes cancer? Sh-t! And here all I thought I had to do to stay safe was to stop smoking!

RT on May 31, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Like I was thinking… decency should be its own reward. I’m not a prude but I do think we should all act according to our station in life. And that’s just as true when we take our clothes off as when we keep them on.

NormanF on May 31, 2011 at 10:39 pm

@RT, Jon Grant…yep, it’s a swamp thang….lol….
btw, Monica damn well knew what she was getting into….she made some reference to getting her ‘presidential knee pads’ in the early stages of her ‘internship’. And her parents are lowlifes….
a 3rd comment aside: Deb brought up the popularity of thongs. I think back to one of her posts where she came up with one of the all-time classic (to me) funny (and true) lines of 2 things that don’t go well together: ” Lo-rise jeans and Hi-rise underwear”. That line still cracks me up.

Not Ovenready on June 1, 2011 at 12:23 am

The HPV virus lives on the skin. It’s not transmitted by body fluids.

Karen on June 1, 2011 at 12:30 am

Karen, maybe you should do some real research and see that 30-40 types of HPV are transmitted through sexual contact, espeically in the genital region of the body.

Oral sex can lead to an HPV infection in males who go down on women.

Abstinence is the best, and only real contraceptive for STD’s.

    homercles82 on June 1, 2011 at 9:24 am

One thought more disgusting than what Clinton does with his cigars is what Barney Frank does with his.

CornCoLeo on June 1, 2011 at 1:07 am

Funny… when you get past the obvious Freudian image – I never looked at cigars in the same light again!

NormanF on June 1, 2011 at 6:07 am

I don’t think there was any rise in obesity during or immediately after William Howard Taft’s Presidency. If men didn’t want to have oral sex, nothing Bill Clinton did or didn’t do would bring it in or out of fashion.

Miranda Rose Smith on June 1, 2011 at 3:09 am

Its an intimate act. Its ridiculous to pretend that just because it doesn’t lead to sexual intercourse doesn’t mean it isn’t adultery. It amusing the farcical distinction lawyers engage in. Morally, cheating is still cheating regardless of the body parts involved, if involves inappropriate contact between people who shouldn’t be in a relationship. An illicit relationship is still a relationship!

NormanF on June 1, 2011 at 5:51 am

C’mon Miranda…you know the followers of this blog are too smart to even consider your very silly analogy.

Skunky on June 1, 2011 at 10:45 am

Bill Clinton IS the cancer on our society, he drove the country down a sexual, economical and moral spiral that we’re never going to come back from atleast not iin my lifetime.
Plus he unleashed the walking environmental plague AlGore on us as another big joke on society. They’re turning our planet against us, using the common elements of the periodic table as their weapon. So many people are unlearned about basic science they’ll believe anything they’re told on TV.

Koeteus on June 1, 2011 at 5:33 am

People will fall for anything… including the obvious lie that sex is not sex because I say so! That is part of the dubious legacy Clinton inflicted upon America.

NormanF on June 1, 2011 at 5:53 am

MIranda I think the bigger issue is the relaxed moralilty that hit a fever pitch during Clinton’s presidency. People just didn’t care. It was ok because Bill was “getting his”.

Relaxed morals is leading to an increase in HPV infections.

homercles82 on June 1, 2011 at 9:34 am

No one has made the observation, so I guess someone has to do it, but I hope this throat cancer thing doesn’t disprove what many have considered axiomatic for most of their live: “If G-d hadn’t intended for man to eat p*$$y, then why did He make it look like a taco”?

CornCoLeo on June 1, 2011 at 9:48 am

I submit that i.c.e. management be put on notice…all that “political fellatio” has it’s consequences.

IceNoMore on June 1, 2011 at 9:55 am

This HPV/throat cancer revelation puts the lie to the (somewhat) old adage that “Eating ain’t cheating”!

Of course, as a diabetic, eating always is.

The Reverend Jacques on June 1, 2011 at 10:21 am

How can we as a society tell anyone that any sexual act is wrong when we stand up constantly and tell people to “accept” homosexuality? You can’t tell everyone that on one hand a lifestyle mainly consisting of brutal sodomy between men is just peachy and on the other hand, oral sex between 2 heterosexuals is wrong.

GianniV on June 1, 2011 at 10:45 am

My view is PDA are gross, regardless of whom is doing it to whom.

If you’re in love, get a room.

We know Clinton foisted his sex life on the rest of us. Did I care to read about in the newspaper? Nope – its still wrong!

And don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

NormanF on June 1, 2011 at 11:00 am

Women do it with women to conclusion , why hasn’t there been a rise in throat cancer in women? I think the researcher was a woman….

George on June 1, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Maybe because women are getting the HPV vaccination?

homercles82 on June 1, 2011 at 1:41 pm

Norman…I agree with you 100%!

Skunky on June 1, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Interesting article; however, not sure what Clinton has to with this. You know oral sex was around waaaaaaaaaay before he was the in charge.

Time Wave on June 1, 2011 at 4:51 pm

Homer,

Yes it is spread through “sexual contact”, but it is you who needs to do your research. The HPV virus lives on the skin in the genital area. Look it up.

Karen on June 1, 2011 at 8:39 pm

Just further proof that heterosexual sex is disgusting and should be outlawed…you know for public health reasons

Pete Bone on June 1, 2011 at 11:09 pm

Whew! For a moment there, I was afraid I would have to quit smoking cigars!

David on June 1, 2011 at 11:51 pm

Karen, I know that. It is still spread via sexual contact in the genital region.

homercles82 on June 2, 2011 at 9:20 am

I know that too. I was just trying to make the point earlier that it is not spread through body fluids, men’s or women’s. It’s actually scarier than that and unless they get a good vaccine, abstinence will be the only way to prevent it.

Karen on June 2, 2011 at 9:40 am

Was never into that department much. Some women smell like rotten pumpkins there. Also, I’m getting older and have hair growing from my ears. There’s a risk of her crabs jumping onto my ear hair and infecting my brain.

Truth on June 2, 2011 at 9:54 am

You need to find a better class of women if they are giving off a rotten pumpkin smell. 😛
