Was up last night ’til 5:00 a.m. rescuing my computer from evil viruses, thus no posting until after I came back from the movie critics’ screening I just attended for “X-Men: First Class,” which is one of the X-Men prequel movies. Can’t post my review until the movie debuts later this week, but for now, the trailer is below. Can you guess if I liked it?
I think DS liked the imagery and effects, but perhaps tolerated the movie. (I loved Fassbender in “Inglourious Baserds”!)
She is far too intelligent to like most “processessed American films”.
(I saw “Thor” this weekend. I would usually never go to such a film but it was the lesser of many evils. I LOVED the wonderful imagery! That part was fantastic! The 3D was awesome. The movie was mostly poorly acted (except the bad bro, Skarsgaard, Hopkins and a tic of “Thor” himself) and chock-a-block with contrivences! The Earth plot was a real snooze and stupid to boot. I avoid American films like the plague so it was nice to see I ain’t missing a thing…films today are still using the same, old tired cliched plots and reactions as they were in 1982. It is so disappointing. “Thor” was saved by the dark images…and if I were a swoony teen, by the beautiful Australian playing Thor.)

As for a superhero stories that has all the right ingredients this one truely does have it. Magneto/Eric’s bitterness towards humanity faced with an ideolistic friendship that we know has a tragic falling out is what great plots long for and this one has. Still how the director balances the philosophical differences of two powerful men (the central point) with a thrown together action plot and perhaps too much supporting cast may take away more than complement.
As this touches upon a Holocaust victim if there’s insensitivity you will Bin Ladin your review to shreds. If the director has half a brain and can take this Jewish created villian in Magneto and find the right balance my guess is you enjoyed it marginally – 4 Reagans for Eric minus 2 Hillary Clintons for wimpy Charles and 1 Oprah for “Footloose” Bacon.

Do effects and “imagery” really dazzle you people? Are you so easily hypnotized by bits of light dancing about the screen like you were a puppy dog following a laser pointer? Effects are boring without a decent plot. Of course, no one ever went broke underestimating the taste (or intelligence) of the American public.

DS_Rocks, I normally am not taken by imagery in processed American films…it has to be an esthetic I appreciate, but when I do, I am thinking outside of the box. In “Thor”, I loved them and was thinking how great it would be to get rid of the sound, dub in heavy metal music and just re-do it as a video to watch to music.
Another movie that made me think of that was Jennifer Lopez’s “The Cell”, an utterly crappy film…but the surrealistic imagery I LOVED. I have thought of buying a copy and just muting it.
I love to see movies that are creatively and inventively photographed. I am a huge fan of David Lynch and Peter Greenaway.
But as I said, I am a movie snob and don’t waste my time seeing American crap.
I like DS reviewing movies and actually disliking most of them. She has good taste and will say a movie is likeable even
if she disagrees with the premise. Her writing is very creative and funny. I am glad she reviews them. Reviewing movies is a dream job…well, if I could only review the ones I liked.
Back in 2000 my favourite movie reviewer was “The Filthy Critic”. His diatribes were delicious!! I’d laugh so hard. He may have been a filthy crank, but he knew a good movie.

I believe DS marginally appreciated the storyline, the special effects were amazing, however the characters are underdeveloped within the plot so its difficult to care about them. These comicbook characters created over time through many issues and you are given the chance to grow with them something thats difficult to do in a two to three hour movie.
I was a fan of Marvel Comics years ago (still am since I’m selling them now and getting paid) the movies are nice its good to see technology finally caught up with the fantasy but the stories aren’t that good for most except Spiderman, these films are the only ones where I liked all three hands down.

Hi Debbie,
I could simply suggest you to trash your PC and switch to a Mac.
Apple computers are almost immune “from birth” to virus, as their operating system is extremely secure and robust.
Unless you are involved in inherently risky things like downloading hacker stuff or game cheats, a “normal” Mac will run for years without a single invasion – no need to install an anti-virus if you use it for your daily tasks and for browsing the web.
If you’re not willing to trash your PC, you should at least install a good external hard disk and have a complete updated backup of your user files, so that you’ll be able to keep on working in case your main HD fails or gets infected.

Debbie that’s a coincidence. i just downloaded a virus courtesy of LGF, one of many infected websites (also Lucianne.com, Breitbart) I no longer visit. I had to pay some dude $200 to un FUBAR my computer. Anyway we should spend all night together for Shavuot learning about the laws of procreation and eating ice cream.

Sorry about your computer having a virus, Debbie. I’m glad that you are back in action.
As for the “X-Men: First Class”, based on seeing the trailer and your review of the previous Marvel movie, “Thor”, I predict that you will give this movie one Reagan.

Debbie – was it the pop-up window “warning” you that you had an infection and always directing you to an anti-virus website? If so, just do a “System restore” to a past checkpoint and all will be well.

For the movie: a nice little timewaster. I’ll wait for the matinee showings.
For DS: I always tell my customers to do backups and have an anti-virus loaded in their rigs to avoid grief. There are companies that offer free versions of AV software. I’m running one now.
Personally, I love the X-Men comics better than the movies, but that’s just me.
