Hilarious: “Harold & Kumar” Do PC Absurdity

By Debbie Schlussel
Every major city in America has what I call the “hometown pimp and ho rag.” It’s the free newspaper that’s insufferably far left and which makes its money with hooker, er . . . “escort” classified ads and the like in the back.
Detroit’s version is “The Metro Times.” My friend, Corey Hall, is one of the bright (and very liberal) movie reviewers for the MT. Corey is very insightful, and I enjoy sitting next to him at movie screenings to hear his comments and asides about the movies we’re reviewing, even if I disagree with his politics.
But Corey’s politics are not this ridiculous. Check out the absurd political correctness–quite clearly not his and very likely his editors’ (though I haven’t asked him)–that changed his movie review and garnered a letter to the editor by an Indian in response. Again, for the record, I did not ask Corey about this and he hasn’t mentioned it, but I happened to notice, and knowing him, I think this is what happened.

Corey Hall reviewed the horrid “Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay.” It stars Kal Penn as an American whose family comes from India. In his review, Corey apparently wrote, in the April 30th issue:

The best political argument here is that we’ve reached the point where a Korean and an Indian can star in movies just as stupid as any white guy . . . but in a perfect world they wouldn’t have to.

But it appears that when PC copy editors got ahold of it, they changed the un-PC word “Indian.” Here’s how it ran:

The best political argument here is that we’ve reached the point where a Korean and a Native American can star in movies just as stupid as any white guy . . . but in a perfect world they wouldn’t have to.

That drew this letter to the editor, from an American who family’s heritage is from India–a letter truly best meant for the Metro Times’ uber-PC editors:

Re: Cory Hall’s review of the film Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay (Metro Times, April 30) and his observation, “The best political argument here is that we’ve reached the point where a Korean and a Native American can star in movies just as stupid as any white guy . . . but in a perfect world they wouldn’t have to.”
I’m not sure if this quote from the Harold and Kumar review was meant to be humor or not. Granted, the movie was dumb. But if you really want to present yourself as an “artsy” educated person or news source with discerning taste, you might try and learn the difference between Indian and Native American.
Indians are from a country in Asia called India; Native Americans are indigenous peoples from North or South American [sic]. My friends and I got quite a laugh out of your mitake. Maybe it comes from your Michigan public school education. I don’t know.
What I do know is you might need to step up your game. I live in Boston and from time to time I visit your Web site; I mean I think it’s good, but this is not making people from Michigan look any more educated than people outside Michigan already think you are.
Good luck. – Michael Jain, Boston, Mass

Like I said, Corey’s a smart guy. He knows the difference between Indians from India and Indians referred to with the PC-term, “Native American.” This is likely an editor’s uber-PC-stylebook taking the place of good sense.
But the letter led the Metro Times to realize their hyper-PC screw-up. This week, in the May 7th issue, the review was re-run, using the hyphenated term, “Indian-American.”
Oh, the hopelessness of the political correctness crowd.

Regardless of the stupidity of the editor, the original authors point is well-made. From Peter Sellers in The Party, to Kal Penn in H&K, we’ve come a long way baby.

Indian-American? How about American-Indian? And exactly why are we all named after that dirt-poor Italian pornographic sketch artist, Amerigo, anyway?

Actually, no humans are native to the Americas. But of course we have to pretend there are.

Caught pants down in bad PC (as if there is “good” PC).
The movie is crap, however, the actors are talented and their work could yield something worthwhile, given a good script. Kai Penn played a Muslim on “24.”
Check out this online film on 3 UK Muslims who ended up in Gitmo, after being caught with Taliban/al-Qaeda in the Fall of 2001.
http://freedocumentaries.org/film.php?id=82
There is not one word in the film about the void of rights claimable by alien combatants captured in failed states. Frankly, the 3 are war criminals, similar to the Germans who faced summary execution, for wearing US uniforms during the Battle of the Bulge. However, the portrayal of US interrogation means, reveals mass incompetence. Crude sensory deprivations and bait-for-confession ersatz-inquisitions, are – properly – laughed at by the criminals. Defense intelligence practises unintentionally make a good case for waterboarding (which I defend in some contexts).
Those who watch the one hour film should do so with prior knowledge that the criminals travelled at least 20 hours through Afghanistan during a hot war, with the purpose of reaching the front line. The fact that they may not have picked up a gun is only a factor of their lack of opportunity, given the fact that they ran into a Taliban retreat. And the capture context reveals a classic case where napalm should have been used.
Punchline: the 3 are now UK Islamofascists, with “cage” creds that local jihadis are lapping up. Islam is peace.

Yep, the PC pundits are at it again. Next thing you know, Wikipedia will have Poontang as the capital of China.
Fact still remains that I wouldn’t waste my hard-earned money on this mind mush.

I have to comment on this- and it’s an example of some of the things I really love to see people get their panties in a twist over…
As an undergrad going to school in Cambridge MA, I desperately needed a job to survive. I had been waiting tables at a quasi-new age place called “Miracle of Science”- geareed toward quiche eaters. I needed “out” from that job for a variety of reasons- time accomodations being the biggie.
Anyway, I saw a classified ad looking for a night clerk at an un-named, but well known conenvience and gasoline emporium. I responded to the ad on the phone before making the hike down to the other end of cambridge from where I was living. I spoke to the manager and he was obviously from the accent, from the subcontinent- fulfilling the stereotype that is so well known for being in such employment.
The interview actually went well, up until the point whre he did the most politically incorrect of things. I personally think PC is a load of crap. Being “native american” (please be sure to note there is no hypen there! 🙂 ) I could give a big rat’s rear less if I’m refered to as an NA, Indian, Injun, Redskin, or whatever. The fact is that I’m an American first, foremost and most significantly.
The manager asked me if I was “Indian”. I naturally said yes, even though I knew what he meant. He was extremely uncomfortable when I showed up for the face to face interview, pussyfooted around the question he had asked, and I asserted I was indeed an Indian. He boxed himself in, knowing that he had stepped into a very deep pile of potentially career ending dog politically correct dog poop. I got the job, and he got fired a few weeks later (not becuase of this but because of some irregularities in the daily receipts). I ended up becoming the night manager, and that’s how I managed to survive financially the last two years of my undergrad studies.
So once in a while, the PC beast can turn around to bite someone in the backside. 😀

Uh-oh. Is Michigan public school education really THAT bad?
Are these PC types so robotic that they’re not even being PC due their principles, and thus inadvertently offend ethnic minorities anyway?
Probably.

Native Americans? I was born as were my parents, in St. Louis Missouri. I AM A NATIVE-AMERICAN. We ALL came here. Some sooner than others. Anything wrong with Siberian-Americans?

Reading the original review of how Harold and Kumar landed up at Gitmo, I recognize that it was inane, but Indian or Native-American, has it ever struck anybody how ridiculous it is to show Infidels being detained at Gitmo, as though they are the ones likely to conduct Jihad? In fact, as of today, have there ever been ANY Infidels detained at Gitmo? (Don’t count converts to Islam, such as David Hick)
P.S. I’ve always thought that there should be a difference in name between America the United States and America the super continent (North & South America).

I heard this is more anti-White bullshit. That they show Southerners as stupid Klansmen, and the Southern White soldiers as one-dimensional hicks, too. And the non-White guys are cool, of course, and they get the White girl. Who enjoys watching this crap? And don’t tell me to go see it; I don’t need to eat every cowpie to complain about having it served to me constantly.
