So Much For The Saudi’s New “Expanded Freedoms” for Women

By Debbie Schlussel
In the last few weeks, Saudi Arabia has made several announcements proclaiming that the country would expand rights and freedoms for women. For example, they would soon be allowed to drive and rent hotel rooms on their own.
I didn’t write about it, because I think it’s cosmetic baloney designed to enhance Saudi PR, at a time when the mainstream media is finally, belatedly covering absurd treatment and sentences for women who are gang rape victims, etc.
And even the women who may eventually get expanded rights don’t and won’t hate us any less. They aren’t less anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, anti-American, and pro-Bin Laden than their male Saudi counterparts. So what’s the point?
My thinking was, yet again, proven correct. Reader Aunti Dhimmi sent me this story from Saudi Arabia’s own government-sanctioned, official English-language daily newspaper. A Saudi businesswoman landed behind bars for the crime of drinking coffee at the evil Zionist-owned Starbucks with a male colleague who was not her hubby. Shocker.

Same ole’, same ole’ in good ole’ Saudi Barbaria, er . . . Arabia:

RIYADH, 5 February 2008 – A Saudi mother of three, who works as a business partner and financial consultant for a reputable company in Jeddah, didn’t expect that a trip to the capital to open the company’s new branch office would have her thrown behind bars by the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice. [DS: Also known as the mutawa’een, or religious police.] . . .
Yara, who has been married for 27 years, said she spent several hours in the women’s section of Riyadh’s Malaz Prison, was strip-searched, ordered to sign a confession that she was in a state of “khulwa” (a state of seclusion with an unrelated man) and for hours prevented from contacting her husband in Jeddah.
Her crime? Having a cup of coffee with a colleague in a Starbucks. . . .
Yesterday Yara and her colleague found themselves in trouble with the commission. One moment they were sitting together discussing brand equity and sovereign wealth funds; the next moment she found herself in commission custody.
Shortly after they took their coffee and Yara opened her laptop, a member of the commission approached the two and demanded the man step outside.
“Then (the commission member) came to me and said: ‘You need to come with us. This man is not a relative,'” she said. . . .
Yara found herself locked in the back of the GMC. [DS: General Motors, The Official Vehicle of Saudi Exremism.]
“The next thing I saw from the window was that we were approaching a place with a sign written on the outside: Malaz Prison,” she said.
Inside the prison, Yara recounts being taken to a cell with a one-way mirror. On the other side was a sheikh. . . .
“They stripped me,” she said. [DS: Hey, I thought Muslims were so concerned with modesty of their women. Only when we Infidels are involved.] “They checked that I had nothing with me and threw me in the cell with all the others.”
Meanwhile, Yara’s husband Hatim, an executive director of a prominent company, was in Jeddah when he received a phone call. . . . He booked the next flight to Riyadh and, after some strings were pulled, Yara was out of jail. . . . “I know this has nothing to do with the country.β€šΓ„ΓΉ [DS: Riiiight.]
The Syrian colleague was still in custody by the time Arab News went to press. He is a senior financial analyst, who is described by acquaintances as a devout Muslim whose mother teaches Qur’an recitation to children.

In some ways, this is just desserts for these people who are so devout in this hateful, violent religion. Note that this woman was well-connected. If she weren’t, she’d be rotting in prison and we’d never know about it. Not that it matters. They’re apologists for this stuff, after the fact, anyway.
What a joke of a people, a country, a religion. And Gloria Steinem is where . . . ?

Well, for the record: The Saudi government never announced any intention of allowing women to drive. That bit of news came from the The Telegraph in the UK and it’s wrong. Also, women already allowed to register at hotels on their own. That change was made three weeks ago. You are right that this one change is cosmetic, probably in attempt to satisfy the United Nations’ mandates for female equality.
Now for this from you:
“And even the women who will eventually get expanded rights don’t and won’t hate us any less. They aren’t less anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, anti-American, and pro-Bin Laden than their male Saudi counterparts. So what’s the point?”
I’m sorry, I didn’t see your interviews with Saudi women who have these views. I don’t see any examples from you about your Saudi acquaintances being anti-American and pro-Bin Laden. Oh, wait, you don’t have any Saudi acquaintances and if you conducted any interviews of Saudi females, you wouldn’t have made that statement.
But I will email your post to my Saudi female friends so they can share a good laugh and shake their heads at American xenophobia.
Then we have this gem: “In some ways, this is just desserts for these people who are so devout in this hateful, violent religion.”
I never thought I’d see the day where a well-educated female activist such as yourself would wish physical and emotional abuse on woman who committed no crime but was kidnapped by vigilantes and strip-searched. Rather cold-hearted, don’t you think?

[13M: TIRED OF YOUR LYING ABOUT MY WORK, MY ACQUAINTANCES (ABOUT WHOM YOU HAVEN’T A CLUE), AND YOUR APOLOGISM FOR SAUDI ARABIA AND ISLAM. YOU ARE A STEP FROM BANNING. AS I NOTED, IT WAS IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS ABOUT THE HOTELS. YOU NEED TO GET GLASSES AND/OR LEARN READING COMPREHENSION. AND YOU ARE RIGHT–HOW DARE I SAY THAT THE SAUDI PEOPLE ARE EXTREMISTS WHO HATE JEWS AND CONTRIBUTE TO HOMICIDE BOMBER TELETHONS. THE NERVE OF ME. I MUST INTERVIEW EVERY SINGLE LAST UNBATHED SAUDI IN THE DESERT TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THIS DETERMINATION. JUST LIKE I’LL HAVE TO COMMIT SUICIDE TO KNOW THAT IT’S NOT A FUN ACTIVITY. AFTER ALL, THE SAUDIS ARE A PHILO-SEMITIC, PRO-WESTERN PEOPLE, INCLUDING THE MOST FAMOUS 15 OF THEM WHOM WE MET IN SEPTEMBER OF 2001. YUP, THEY ARE SUCH A MODERATE PEACEFUL PEOPLE THAT IF THERE WERE FREE ELECTIONS TOMORROW, BIN LADEN AND HIS HENCHMEN WOULD NEVAH EVAH COME TO POWER. STUPID ME. THANKS FOR SETTING ME STRAIGHT.
**** UPDATE: BTW, I MAKE NO APOLOGY FOR WISHING HARM TO THOSE WHO WISH MY DESTRUCTION. THE “TURN THE OTHER CHEEK” PHILOSOPHY IS NOT ANYTHING I BELIEV IN. DS]

Gloria Steinem? Forget it…she’s another smug, self congratulatory and complacent dhimmi coward who is far too comfortable for her own good, surrounded by sycophants. She is no longer interested in real human suffering and should be forced to spend a month in Riyadh for a reality sandwich.

Saudi women would be getting privileges… they’re just a step above Jews in the Saudi scheme of things. They are neither meant to be seen nor heard. And freedom would not moderate the Saudis…. many of the terrorists in Iraq who’ve fought on behalf of Al Qaeda have come from Saudi Arabia. Just like the 15 9/11 hijackers. And we don’t really need to visit the kingdom to know that its highly unlikely their customs will evolve to those of the 21st Century. The problem is Islam… or at least the Wahhabite Saudi version of it that poses a danger to the West’s way of life in our own lifetime and way beyond.

Well, I think you are over reacting because as you well know, too much consumption of coffee or any caffine beverages with the opposite sex outside the family can lead to illicit sexual behaviour which has no place for tolerance in Saudi Arabia.Just ask the moral experts in the saudi government. The saudis have it right and we could learn a lot from them. They deserve credit for retaining their high moral standards in their country, something we infidels should emulate for our moral corruption.Yes, and even victimhood is a crime, exspecially involving a female. They should have also thrown the book at Starbucks for allowing such degenracy in their coffee shop. Too bad we don’t have death penalties for rape victims in America. It just comes to show you how islamaphobic and bigotted we are for not allowing them to introduce their barbarism into our culture. Shame on us!!!
So Debbie, cut a little slack for our allies the saudis and try putting on a hijab lol.

Well, I guess all that shouting makes you right. I’m neither an apologist for Saudi Arabia nor Islam (nothing in my statements indicate that), I’m simply challenging your assertions that generalize and condemn an entire people. I know that you are more intellectually honest than that. I just would like to see it on your blog. Obviously, I have touched a nerve.

Where is Laura Bush when we need her?

13–I’m sure that Debbie can defend herself, but the caps are used to distinguish her comments on the blog.
More than that, from but a moment’s visit to your blog it is clear that you are little more than a deluded Leftist tool.

Red Ryder on February 6, 2008 at 4:37 pm

“Obviously, I have touched a nerve.”
Yes, the nerve sensitive to apologists for one of the most repressive, hateful regimes on the planet. Your nerve has evidently atrophied.

So where is the NOW gang on this… Oh yeah, I forgot that NOW really stands for “National Organization for Butch & Bull-Dyke only American Feminazis”. This “Hippo”crital bunch cares nothing for the advancement of women. They only care about their own advancement @ the buffet.

But we can’t discount that wacky, Jew-loving Saudi sense of humor, as evidenced in this video clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIgG3qvcUX8
where a reporter does man (and only man) in the street interviews asking, “Would you shake hands with a Jew?”
Or maybe it isn’t so wacky.
[SOS: I FORGOT ABOUT THAT MUST-SEE VIDEO, WHICH IS AN ALL-TIME CLASSIC (EVEN THOUGH IT’S RELATIVELY RECENT. THANKS FOR REMINDING ME AND POSTING THE LINK. DS]

Debbie,
I would leave 13 Murders to his posts. He’s the best example of “apologist Arab Mongoloids” on the net. I imagine he writes this between his fantasy of visiting the bestiality farm in Washington. Hey 13 – Get off that sheep & Push your tongue back in your mouth.

RC Flyer on February 6, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Son Of Sheldon… good video. This is a fairly typical sentiment on the “Arab Street.” Since the Koran says Jews are the descendants of pigs and apes, its clear they view Jews as subhuman… and all the more so because in Israel the Jews ceased being dhimmis. For that alone, they’ve sinned in being haughty and must be destroyed. With that kind of mindset among the Arabs, peace is impossible. Why would you want to shake hands with someone who wants you dead? The fact of the matter is Jew-hatred is deep-rooted in the Muslim World and wishful thinking won’t change the fact they hate Jews.
Debbie Schlussel here gotten a lot of e-mail mostly with very graphic intentions not fit to go into here of what the Muslim and Arab writers would like to do her given the chance. And given the fact they do murder Jews in Israel, such sentiments aren’t the idle ravings of crazed fanatics. They do carry out their Death To The Jews ideology with a gusto.
Its important to see the truth and not as leftist pacifists like to have people believe that its different. Today the PA’s own media (the supposed peace partner with Israel) glorified the Dimona homocide bombers. Things may have changed in how Israelis view the Arabs but the Arab desire to finally annihilate Israel remains as strong as ever.

That youtube video proves that Hitler is alive and well and living in the Muslim Nation. Muslims should chant every day, “Heil, Mohammed!”

An interesting detail no one else has mentioned. “Yara, a petite 40-year-old woman” ….”Yara, who has been married for 27 years”.
Math wasn’t my best subject but Yara was 13 when she married (was forced to marry?). Something about celebrating your silver wedding anniversary at age 38 doesn’t seem right.

Foxnews is this morning calling her American and said the US Embassy was involved.

Aunt Bea on February 7, 2008 at 11:26 am

I am so glad I live in AMERICA and can worship in my Christian Church like I did last night. I easily shook hands and hugged my Christian brothers(& sisters) without fear that I would be scorned or pulled out of the church. My son asked me a few nites ago “is
America the greatest country” I yelled YES! America is the greatest country in the world.
Do we even realize how fortunate we have it in America?
Whadda Country!!!

Debbie –
You should look at other sources besides Arab News (google is your friend πŸ˜‰
TimesOnline here http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article3321637.ece
adds/corrects quite a bit of the story you posted.
She is not Saudi. She is a US citizen, either naturalized or first generation. She’s 37 years old, so it is doubtful that she has been married 27 years. There is much more information inthe article.
