Good News Or Just a Blip?: Rap Sales Took a Dive in 2007
By Debbie Schlussel
Yo, Yo, Yo. Good news . . . for now. And I hope it’s a trend. But knowing you can’t underestimate bad taste in America, I’m not so sure.
Rap sales fell tremendously in 2007. While all record sales were down, they were down for the rap “genre,” more than any other:
This year’s record drop in album sales (15%) was reflected in slumping sales for every musical genre Nielsen SoundScan tracks in its year-end report.
Rap suffered the biggest drop, 30%. R&B fared best if you subtract the rap results that are part of its total: It was down about 6%. Rock, the top-selling genre (SoundScan has no pop category), fell 12.5%, and country fell 16.3%, Christian/gospel slid 14.3% and Latin was down 15.6%.
I’m Down Wit’ Dat’, My Bruthas.

Now if only the mental defectives that sing this stuff would be reduced by similar numbers. Cascading effect.
