Video of the Day: One of My All-Time Fave Songs

By Debbie Schlussel
In Judaism, when you are mourning a close relative you cannot listen to music. In mourning a parent, one is not supposed to listen to music for a year (there are other restrictions, like no concerts, movies, gatherings, parties, weddings, etc.). Since I love to listen to music, that’s been the toughest restriction on me in mourning my late father.
But nothing says I can’t post videos and music on my site for you to listen to. Would love to see these guys in concert–they are on a reunion tour which is getting rave reviews–when my mourning period is over. One of my favorite songs is this one from Genesis’ “Duke” album. I like the “Three Sides Live” version even better, so I’ve posted both. Hard to believe this song is almost 28 years old (from 1980). The conventional wisdom is that Peter Gabriel was the best of Genesis’ lead singers, but I disagree. He’s over-rated. Phil Collins’ talent–vocals AND drums–was and remains enormous. Songs like this, “Abacab,” and “Home By the Sea” are great. Have you seen them in concert? How were they?

Why wait a year? I’m sure your Dad in heaven wouldn’t mind. Religion should be a guide, not a chain.

FYI Norman. Debbie is commited to her values, that is the Torah and the guidance of her late father, a man of the Book “bless his soul”. Why do not show more respect instead of being sarcastic?

Daniel,
I wasn’t being sarcastic. I meant no ill will in my last post. Daniel, next time take that pickle out of your ass before you post because it definitely affects your brain.

Thank you Norman. That shows how well mannered you are. I will not respond to your dirty remarks. Why?
1- I already have an idea what kind of person you are.
2- Out of respect to Debbie and her late father “God bless his soul”.
Thank you again.

Daniel,
You are the problem, not me.
Do yourself a favor and learn something called tact over the holidays.
Merry Christmas,
Norman

Forget the nostalgia of a “reunion”. Stick with the live concert videos when groups are in their prime.
I saw Genesis back in the 90’s sometime…it was sort of a “comeback” tour then. I remember only that I was very disappointed. Equally disappointed by a Stones concert in the 90’s. Sting, Bono, Daultry and Plant are all shadows of their former selves as well.

Sorry to hear that. I’ve always heard that Genesis was a great live band. I saw The Who on their Quadrophenia tour about 10 years ago. They were amazing back then.

Norman,
Thank you for the advice.
Merry Christmas to you as well.

Debbie, I’m a long time semi-closeted Genesis fan, just more proof of our compatibility. I never saw them in concert, but I’d take you to a reunion show, Jewish rules permitting. I didn’t like the later stuff they did, so we could kibbitz during that part. Maybe Mike and the Mechanics could open for them.

I saw Genesis in 1980, 1982, 1987 and 1992. They were always awesome. They ’92 show is my second favorite concert of all time (behind Jeff Beck/Stevie Ray Vaughan, shortly before Stevie Ray died). I’m disappointed that Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett aren’t on the reunion. That would be one show I’d pay a couple hundred to see.

They were at the Palace in late September, Debbie. I’m not a huge Genesis fan, but they put on a real good show.

Soo….you’ve been listening to lotsa rap, eh? Pun intended!
Why one year, why not 8 months, or a year and a half….? what’s up with “one year”? Just curious.

I can remember in high school listening to Genesis (early-mid 80s) all the time. Kind of liked both singers equally. Of course, to my shock today’s high schoolers would consider them “our parents’ music”.
Guess we’re getting “old” Deb….

Saw them in 1982 at the Metropolitan Sports Center in Minneapolis (Three Sides Live Tour) and again in 1992 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh (We Cant Dance Tour). We had tremendous seats at Three Rivers, only a few rows from the stage and we could see that the band was geniunely having fun, but Three Sides Live was the better show.
I haven’t heard much about this tour, but I’m always a bit leary of reunion tours in general. I just don’t believe the shows are as good compared to when the bands are at their peak and/or truly doing it for the music.
