Enough of Ted Williams: “Golden Voice” is No Hero

By Debbie Schlussel

Is it just me . . . or are you also tired of the hero-worship and strange new respect bestowed on Ted Williams, the homeless man and drug addict with a golden radio voice?  Sorry, but I don’t celebrate this man, the new (Black male) Snooki.

Ted Williams: “Golden Voice” is Moldy Choice for America’s Hero Worship

American loves its successes and loves seeing those successes torn down.  And then it likes to see them rehabbed and successful, again.  How else can you explain the fact that Donald Trump is still listened to about business of any kind?  The guy was, at one time, the world’s largest debtor.  He was among the first who was deemed “too big too fail,” and that’s the only reason he still has a cent to his name.  Creditors had so much invested in his failed real estate, hotel, and other ventures that they couldn’t afford to let him fail, which is why he was never forced to file for bankruptcy.  But he’s a (rich) failure nonetheless, with casinos he’s mismanaged and lost, etc.  His only successful venture is his absurd reality show on NBC, “The Apprentice,” in which his son and daughter–whose greatest and only real business “achievement” is coming out of the right vagina (one which was copulating with Trump)–have the chutzpah to lecture and judge actual, real business people.

So, now, we have another success-failure-success, albeit on a much smaller scale.  But I still don’t see why Ted Williams is so worthy of admiration or even happiness and pride now that he’s off the streets of Ohio.

The man–unlike many homeless and otherwise downtrodden Americans, today–was a drug addict.  He chose that life.  There’s a reason the Net is chock-full of mugshots of Williams with various cheesy hairstyles.  He led a life of crime and was repeatedly arrested.  He also was a serial baby daddy, fathering nine kids and leaving them without a father or any means of support, growing up.  The American taxpayers probably helped pay to feed and clothe them because he shirked that responsibility after wantonly spreading his seed.  He chose that, too.  And while some of his kids who’ve appeared on TV seem like they were actually better off without this slob in their lives, we know what generally happens with kids without a father:  more likely to commit crime, to do drugs, to drop out of school, to have sex and become a parent as an under-aged teen, etc.

So, forgive me, if I don’t see the merit in rewarding this lout . . . just because he has a great voice and was living on the streets.  America is chock full of out-of-work voice-over artists and unemployed radio announcers.  And most of them are out of work because it’s a tough business, even tougher now with consolidation of radio station ownership, etc.  Most of them are NOT out of work because they blew it and did drugs.  Most of them didn’t father nine kids with several different women and weren’t serial criminals a la Williams.  In many ways, even O.J. Simpson pool boy, Kato Kaelin, was more respectable than this guy.  Many out-of-work–homeless and not homeless–Americans did all the right things.  They lost everything, anyway, because of downsizing, tragedy, and other things that happen in life.  Ted Williams’ behavior earns him a place in line behind them, not ahead.

I believe in second chances.  We all make mistakes.  That’s inherently human, and none of us is perfect.  I also believe in compassion for the downtrodden and less fortunate.  However, I believe in second chances and compassion–FIRST–for those who didn’t do these things this guy did to earn his place on the streets.  I don’t feel sympathy for him.  I feel sympathy–and pity–for the kids and women he abandoned.  Those are the people who really deserve a second chance, since he took their first chance away by snorting and smoking it up into thin air.

And, of course, now we are seeing the real Ted Williams.  With cash and job offers showered on him all over the place, you can’t take the street out of him.  He’s already been arrested for an altercation and was caught drinking alcohol, among the addictions that brought him to the street.  And, frankly, he seems a little mentally ill.

Williams has a great voice by accident of birth and by the grace of G-d.  It’s nothing he did, nothing he earned.  In fact, he’s done and earned nothing . . . unless you count enduring the hypocritical faux-honky-tonk twattle admonishments of Dr. Phil (on which Williams makes an appearance, this week) as hard time.

And, then, you might have a point.

Get it straight, America:  Ted Williams is no hero.  If anything, he’s just another one of the many irresponsible losers who are bringing America down and increasing the size and misery of its underclass.

The fact that he’s now doing announcing and voice-overs for “Entertainment Tonight” and Kraft doesn’t change or repair that.  Not even a little.

I hope he cleans up his act and doesn’t end up on the street again. Very soon, his 15 minutes will be up. And, sadly, I predict in a couple of years, he’ll be back where he was . . . or on his way there. People generally don’t change. And he’s already shown that he won’t.

Yes, anyone in America can become an overnight success.  But the moral here, is that anyone in this country can also spend a lifetime urinating on America to get there.

And the latter is the real Ted Williams story.  It’s not something to celebrate.

WOW. I thought I was the only one who felt this way!

Gee where have I been? I thought at first this was somehow related to THE Ted Williams. Who is this other guy? Why is he getting his 15 minutes of fame?

Meanwhile, many who’ve worked hard and proved themselves as business successes are many times demonized as ‘capitalists’, ‘greedy’, or worse. Just for making products that makes people’s lives easier.

P. Aaron on January 12, 2011 at 2:02 pm

Yes, he made mistakes. Repeatedly. What you are missing, in the Ted Williams story so far – is that he is given a huge second chance here. He is not a hero by any means. Heroes are people who race into burning buildings to save people, and heroes are people who do the right thing at the right time, like stopping an assault they are witness too, when everyone else is frozen in fear or inertia. Who has been calling him a hero and worshiping him? But what he is, is an American. We all want him to succeed. Hopefully he can now financially and emotionally support all his offspring.

I have to wonder about any woman who would breed with this guy! They can’t be any better than him. Lookie here, Ize just gave birth to a welfare baby!

I have friends who got college degrees, obeyed the law, had talent, and worked hard for a career in show biz they never got. Along comes Ted Williams (a man who pales in comparison to the two time war hero, top five base ball great), Snooki, and “The Situation,” and voila, they have overpaid careers with a minimum of skill.

No wonder China and the Islamists are eating our lunch.

When I heard the fact that he had nine (9) children, I cringed and turned the channel.

His GREATEST responsibility in God’s eyes is to father his children. Nothing can offset this failure.

He will be on the street again within 2 years… he will fail to show up to work. The children will get nothing from him, either.

He’s another diversion from what is important for this country to survive.

PS Donald Trump has made a career out of building over-priced real estate with other people’s money. He, too, is a failure. Look at his baby mamas…

I don’t know too much about this Ted Williams guy, so I’m not going to do too much commenting on this guy, but what about John Wheeler, who two weeks ago was murdered and his body was found in a dumpster in Newark, Delaware! Til this day, the FBI hasn’t investigated Mr. Wheeler’s death, he served during the Vietnam War, he was with the SEC in the 1980s or 1990s for the government, etc.

Thank You Sean R. you took the words right out of my mouth. On so many occasions you when you see a so called feel good story such as this its to cover a back story like John Wheeler who is all but forgotten in main stream media. Just like the wag the dog scenario Bill Clinton brought to fruition by having sex with an intern inorder to cover his selling nuclear secrets to China. Now a little over ten years later China has a stealth bommber and nuclear warheads pointed our way.

I agree with Debbie Schlussel that he is neither a hero nor any kind of role model. I aslo like drinkungwithbob’s rant on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdPQ3Zx7hhQ

Max Kuenkel on January 12, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Miss Schlussel, Et Alii:

At the YOU TUBE web site, “DRINKING WITH BOB” has a couple of very interesting videos about this very subject.

In fact, I think he was the first person (that I’m currently aware of) to publicly state this, which initially shocked many YOU TUBE viewers.

Boy, oh boy, did he catch flak from his regular fans for doing so!

But, when he explained his logic, his fans saw the light and agreed, for these facts had not been reported in the popular mainstream mass media.

Do you ever watch the “DRINKING WITH BOB” video rants?

Some are really good, while others are boring.

It all depends on the subject, and/or what sort of mood I happen to be in at the moment.

But, I’m glad you wrote about this.

So far, you and “DRINKING WITH BOB” are the ONLY folks who’ve articulated these things.

Thank you.

There’ve been some others who’ve raised questions about this guy who has the misfortune of sharing the same name as the “Splendid Splinter.” At least one radio host questioned why he was put ahead of the line for voiceover jobs while others trying to break into the business (both radio and TV) have no such luck due to the massive automation, reliance on voice-tracking, etc. (plus the fact that radio and TV stations no longer have their own homegrown staff announcers – some of whose works can be seen [and heard] on YouTube).

As to why he’s getting all the attention: Three guesses, the first two don’t count.

ConcernedPatriot on January 12, 2011 at 3:29 pm

Hmmmm, the first 2 don’t count. Let’s see, skipping #1 & #2 and going straight to #3 Because he’s black.

DS is very spot-on with her thoughts on TW. I feel very sorry for him, but not enough to disagree, and like DS states, the real sympathy lies in his abandoned families.

Emotional blobs just like the feel good story on TW. I can’t feel good because I know for me that comes when this guy can straighten up and fly right. Sadly, doing the right thing is always hard and I don’t think this guy is up for a fight.

Last weekend (prior to the Safeway shootings) a local radio host whom I usually detest (Mel Robbins) talked about how TW prolly could not handle the seond chance (she was right, too!). You should have heard all the pissed off peeps calling in to chastize her…she wasn’t coming down on him, she had the balls to present the horrible truth.

Sometimes I get overwhelmed at how peeps just can’t do the right thing. I wish more people could, but you really can’t teach that type of toughness and intestinal fortitude.

Skunky on January 12, 2011 at 5:12 pm

I’m dissappointed and can’t believe Oprah, Dr. Phil, Ellen Degeneres and other celebrity figures would promote this guy for the mere fact that he is a DEADBEAT DAD, drug head & he’s been a career crimal. His kids aren’t babies or even minors. He doesn’t need the fame or money to help his family. The guy needs help, but he needs rehab first and should get in line for a job by starting at the bottom. Give him a job meanial job like picking up trash and not being overpaid either.

There’s a lot of other people with a GOLDEN VOICE, especially in church that didn’t abandon their family, do drugs or commit crimes for drugs that should be given this GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY before Ted Williams the homeless, drughead, criminal & DEADBEAT DAD!!!

Let’s not forget that he owes the government money for supporting his family.

Cheryl Comeaux on January 12, 2011 at 5:21 pm

Well said Deb. I already have had enough of hiom and U I both know he will be on drugs again once he gets some$$$$ in his pocket.

I for one believe there should be some kind of criinal statute foe serial fathers for guys like him and Antonio Cromartie. he of the 8 kids with 7 different women & he can rememeber his kid sname.

Let’s celebrate real heros not manufacture one’s like this guy.

The Sage on January 12, 2011 at 5:23 pm

It is insulting that you said that TW seemed mentally ill. My little boy suffers from mental illness and so do a few of my friends’ kids (support group). Just because someone is odd doesn’t necessarily mean that he is MI. It”s not a term to be thrown around ‘just because’.

Lee in IL on January 12, 2011 at 6:27 pm

I don’t think the MI diagnosis was being thrown around “because.” 1/3 of the Homeless are mentally ill, and we KNOW he had a confirmed CD problem.

As for the “hero worship”—Liberals these days only worship twisted people. They have no conception of G-d or of what constitutes truly admirable character traits.

Occam's Tool on January 12, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Doesn’t matter how hard you work or study anymore. Doesn’t matter that you delay gratification, make the right life choices, and live clean. Just get a youtube video to go viral, and you’re an instant success. Just bring your trashy life along for the ride.

spiffo on January 12, 2011 at 7:11 pm

As I wrote on the Columbus Dispatch website earlier today:When are we going to stop making celebrities of people because of the way they look or sound? Everyone in the press wanted this to be a feel good story. Real life always gets in the way of the fantasy world. There was a reason this guy was homeless. Most of the entrenched homeless are people with mental issues who should be in an institution getting treatment for their ailments. Instead, someone like a Williams comes along, and all reason and logic fly out the window.

JeffT on January 12, 2011 at 7:13 pm

So are you just trying to be mad over this or can you really not recognize why his story resonates with people? His viral video shows a very humble person, a down-and-out man, with a clear talent and a desire to better his station in life. It’s an undeniably heartwarming story, unless you’re set on disliking him from the start. DS may have more in common with Snooki than does Ted Williams.

Amor on January 12, 2011 at 8:08 pm

The news media likes their “feel good stories” and Gd knows! We could use some.

That being said, this isn’t really a big story. The important thing is that an unemployed person found gainful employment. IMHO, that’s always a good thing.

The process of America returning to a full employment economy happens with MILLIONS of individuals returning back to work one-by-one. This is just one small step to economic recovery and we need a LOT more.

Has anyone ever seen the photo display of the face of Meth?

http://www.barelyhangingon.com/wp-content/uploads/addictfacesofmethL.jpg

Well this guy looks like KING HUSSEIN OBAMA on a meth binge. I could see it now the ‘Before’ face of Obama and the ‘After’ picture of Ted Williams.

However I agree he is no hero, however, it is better he is back on his feet rather than him on a street corner or breaking in houses to feed his addiction.

Debbie you wrote, “wantonly spreading his seed”, LMAO!!

CaliforniaScreaming on January 12, 2011 at 9:27 pm

Those mugshots are fascinating. At various times in this man’s life, he has resembled Geraldo Riviera, Ed Bradley, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and Jimmy Carl Black (the Indian of the group). The one common element to all of those photos is his giant sized John Kerry-shaped head.

Irving on January 12, 2011 at 9:47 pm

He is a man who chose to fall into the septic tank, and he dragged all of those women and his children into it with him. As noted elsewhere, there are many talented and deserving people who have been tossed into the landfill of life due to media consolidations and outsourcing abroad. These people did not set out to trash their lives and the lives of others, but are still falling into the ranks of an ever expanding underclass. Fifty years ago, if you were not making it you were probably not really trying or not doing something correctly. Now, that is no longer the case. Staying out of trouble, showing perseverance, and seriously attending to one’s education no longer even a partial guarantee of even a modest reward in our society.

Worry01 on January 13, 2011 at 1:18 am

Ted Williams is on his way to rehab. He just got the cops called on him the other day because he got in a loud argument with his daughter. He’s totally being set up to go on a binge that will probably kill him. He met kobe bryant and is staying in five star hotels. I was once homeless sleeping under a bridge and can’t imagine what is going through his head. Just being indoors is a shock to the system.

Happy New Year Tyler and welcome back dude. Question for Tyler, just out of curiosity, what are your opinions on the Arizona shootings over weekend? I’m not trying to be a wise guy or anything like that, just asking what your opinion is over this tradgey!

“A nation is identified by it’s borders, language & culture!”

Sean R. on January 13, 2011 at 9:37 am

Ted was a mature adult & had 9 kids before he became a homeless addict. He spent 26 years at not being a success. His kids & ex-wife tried to help him. He’s been at ROCK BOTTON for A LONG TIME!!!

I am speaking from experience. I have lived t…hrough the same as his family. My father, my ex-husband & my kids!!!

I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve a second chance, but he doesn’t deserve all the glorified attention & Golden Opportunity of job offers he’s getting.

He’s not a hero, he didn’t save anyone. Matter of fact, he didn’t do anything to help anyone. He actually abandoned & neglected his family for 26 years. He left his wife for another woman & forced the mothers of his children with the burden & sole responsibility of raising his kids. One of his wives passed away & his son didn’t have a father to show him the right way in life, therefore, he became a foster child getting into his own troubles. The troubles started with his dad not being there. The other wife had her own handicap of loosing sight in one eye, but she still did her part as a mother.

He also committed several crimes over the years to support his alcohol & drug habit. He didn’t look out for his kids, instead his kids looked for him on the streets to give him food & clothes. Not to mention he didn’t even take care of his elderly mother. He filled her life with greif too.

He needs rehab. Should this be on the taxpayers too? He should find a job, starting at the bottom not the top. I think deserving people who lived their life right & trying to make it honestly in life should be the ones in line for the golden opportunities. I’m sure there’s a lot of out of work people & some down on their luck (with a family) that would be greatful to have one of the job offers Ted Williams is getting.

He had a good job as an announcer. That’s when he chose to leave his wife & kids for another woman and the drug & alcohol lifestyle. He made his choice of destructive lifestyle & he should not be rewarded for it!!!

CJ on January 13, 2011 at 10:52 am

Cheryl Comeaux There’s A LOT of people that could be considered VICTIMS, but they choose not to wear the TITLE. They do whatever they can honestly to better themselves. And they have their priorities in the right order.

Ted on the other hand was not a vict…im, he chose the lifestyle he led for 26 years. That way of life gets even rougher as he’s getting up in age. It’s also cold outside!!! Due to the economy, times are getting are rougher on the streets when people don’t have money to give to the homeless/panhandlers.

I’m not leaving single Dads out, but there are thousands more of single Moms out there raising their kids alone. They’re having a hard time doing so because their children’s sperm donors are neglecting them. Their sperm donors don’t have the best interest, nor are they concerned about the welfare of their children. Ted was one of these sperm donors “9 Times”!!!

CJ on January 13, 2011 at 10:55 am

To me, this Ted Williams thing *reeks* of Social Justice. Its a way of saying a big FU to the hard-working, successful people out there. They prop up this loser – and say “HA HA. He is now just like you – he has a job – and he didnt do anything to deserve it! Look what we can do! We can take a loser – and make him equal to you. Your hard work? Sucker. You wasted your life by trying and working hard! You are no better than Ted Williams!”.

asufrin on January 13, 2011 at 1:37 pm

And here I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I happened to have caught an interview with his mother on one of the news channels. She didn’t seem overly impressed either.

Naomi Romm on January 13, 2011 at 1:42 pm

THERE’S MEMBERS OF OUR MILITARY WITH “GOLDEN VOICES” THAT ARE IN NEED OF JOBS “AFTER SERVING OUR COUNTRY”!!! THERE’S ALSO FIRST RESPONDERS WITH “GOLDEN VOICES” THAT WOULD LOVE AN OPPORTUNITY AS “TED THE DEADBEAT DAD”!!!

YOUR PAST ALWAYS PROCEEDS YOU. HE CERTAINLY IS IN NEED OF REHABILITATING. HE MAY BE QUALIFIED, BUT HE ISN’T ENTITLED TO THE JOB OFFERS HE’S GETTING.

USDevilDogMom on January 13, 2011 at 3:10 pm

I concur … however, I guess the only thing I can think about the media hoopla is – prodigal son???
