Fuss Over Navy Ship Video is Much PC Ado ‘Bout Nothin’

By Debbie Schlussel

Another day, another attack on the U.S. military.  A new year, a new attack on the U.S. military.  But this one is based on video tapes that are four and five years old.

There’s a reason–several, actually–why women and gays shouldn’t be in the military.  And it’s not just that they–the women–get pregnant and that both groups destroy morale and cohesion of the unit.  It’s that they can’t handle the lewd hijinks in the USS Enterprise video, stuff that goes on and has been going on in the U.S. military from time immemorial.

I viewed one of the risque videos, which is the subject of much fuss, and for me, it’s disgusting and inappropriate, and more than that, stupid.  The people in them are sleazy, and I probably wouldn’t want to hang out with them.  But it’s not for me to judge.  I’m not fighting in any war and serving the country in the military.  I’m not stuck on a ship in the middle of nowhere.  I’ve seen World War II cards, drawings, pictures soldiers sent home and shared with each other, and some of them are downright low-class filthy.  But that’s what men do when they are away, without their wives and girlfriends, and have itches they need to, um, scratch, etc.  Navy Captain Owen Honors  showed poor taste and even worse judgment in participating (how dumb was it to be on a video – helloooo . . . ?), but perhaps he thought this was the way to help ship morale.  We don’t know why he did it, as he’s a very respected captain, according to many of his sailors, current and former.  No, it’s not something that’s a credit to our military.  But it’s just a small group of soldiers, hardly representative of the mostly fine people who serve America.  And the videos were meant to be private.

The video–because of its release and the mainstream media promotion of it–is now the stuff of dumb lawsuits, Oprah appearances, and Islamic anti-American propaganda. The fuss over the video is simply the mainstream media doing Bin Laden’s work.

I can just see these Islamic hypocrites from their caves, planning to use this stuff in their recruiting tapes to show how evil the Great American Satan’s soldiers are . . . while Bin Laden and his men make some poor Afghan boy dress like a girl and do Bacha Bazi dances before they all gang rape him.  Thanks, ABCFOXNewsMSNBCBSCNN.

This is the kind of stuff that has always been going on in the military–especially on ships, where it’s lonely and there isn’t much to do, while confined in close quarters.  The fuss about it makes you wonder about the uber-sensitivity of gays and women and their advocates and how their making fusses over videos like this will add to the success of their planned further integration into the military.  If they can’t handle a video, imagine when they’re in a foxhole.  Not exactly a good omen. We’ve become a nation of hyper-sensitive wimps. Political correctness is the death of us.

The release of this videos, made a long time ago–several years ago, will hurt careers and hurt America.  It won’t do much else.  It won’t help gay rights or any so-called civil rights cause.

Like I said, I think the videos are disgusting, showing mocked group shower scenes and simulated masturbation.  But those videos weren’t made for you or me to see.  They were made by military people on a ship for their own consumption, not ours, and not for the world to hate on America and attack our Armed Forces.

And turn on MTV2, HBO, or even soap operas in the afternoon on ABC.  You won’t see stuff too much more chaste.  Brett Favre’s texted photos and request for a masturbation are far more disgusting and they’re all over the place.

I would like to know who leaked the video and why, if for any other reason than to hurt America, hurt our Armed Forces, hurt our Navy, hurt our sailors, and hurt Captain Honors.  Those are the only things that person achieved.  Little else.

We are at war, every single day.  How sad that the Virginian -Pilot, which reported on the 2006 and 2007 videos, doesn’t get that.

Hey, if you are on a ship thousands of miles from home, out at sea for nine months at a time, away from your family, you are entitled to some hijinks.

This is just one more effort on the part of top brass and politicians to turn the U.S. military, and this country, into a bunch of pussies (please excuse the expression, but nothing else is strong enough).

Jonathan Grant on January 3, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Jon, a Navy ship is not a monastery – and it can get lonely for months at a stretch on the sea. And beside the Bin Laden crowd, those boys are models of rectitude. Its interesting they’re criticized for their sex lives by the same crowd that insists when people do it, its no big deal – but its a scandal if that surfaces in the Navy!

NormanF on January 3, 2011 at 3:23 pm

You can bet your bippy this Captain will be leaving the service and the homoerotic crowd will put a notch in its butt….er, uh gun butt (figuratively speaking of course).

Mark F. on January 3, 2011 at 1:56 pm

Yup Debbie, you saw what Brett Favre did when you were an undergrad… while I grant the videos are in poor taste, our military service people are still models of decorum next to the likes of Favre.

This is indeed much ado about nothin’.

NormanF on January 3, 2011 at 2:14 pm

I think this situation is symbolic of the single biggest problem in America today—busy-bodies. If people would only get a life of their own, perhaps there would be less time to try to run everyone else’s. This type of humor is the norm in the military. If one cannot handle this, they certainly cannot handle the real business of our armed forces and would be best served to deliberately cover their eyes and ears any time ANY issue concerning the military arises.
It should not come as a surprise when those who do the dirty work of a nation enjoy dirty humor in their spare time.

peter on January 3, 2011 at 2:32 pm

There are too many managers and too few leaders in today’s military and the rest of society.
This is why they try to expect military personnel, cops, corrections officers, firefighters, construction and factory workers, etc, to act like a bunch of women working in an air conditioned office.
I suppose part of this is because of them allowing women, and now fake women (queers) into “male dominated” occupations.
That, and it’s part of the pussification of America.

RT on January 3, 2011 at 2:34 pm

You never know though — the gays might be worse, with their bizarre sexual practices.

Little Al on January 3, 2011 at 2:40 pm

Excellent piece Debbie.
My last year in the Army is when they started letting women serve in combat units and things changed for sure and helped me in my decision to not reup.
So is this the way it’s going to be with “Don’t ask don’t tell” repealed?
This is what a lot of people where afraid of.
Now our armed forces will not be able to do what they do so well, better then anyone else in the word.
Why serve if you’re going to have be worried about something like this while you’re trying to do your job.

Robert Fleming on January 3, 2011 at 3:19 pm

I watched what was available on u-tube and was quite surprised how lame the video was. I was in the Navy for six years in the mid 80’s. I guess a lot has changed since then. I guess it all started when they allowed women on ships. I guess in order to make it nice and respectful for the women they had to tone it down a lot. I can remember hearing and using the f word as every part of speech in one sentence. Just about every thing on board has its real name and the one we we called it. The one we called it was always pretty raunchy. For instance, the AFFF equipment that is used to draw the ATTT concentrate out of a five gallon can, mixes it with sea water, and sprays it on a fire is known as a “donkey d##g”. I don’t even remember its real name. Every body’s rating title had some sort of sexual equivalent you were known as. So all I can say is if we had video and other electronic equipment back then as we have today, you would have seen some really “raunchy” videos. Not like the lame ones you are seeing today.

augiedog on January 3, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Now sailors are known for salty language and for doing things on shore leave that would make a woman blush. Why are people shocked at this? With political correctness, something of the carefree Navy life has to be buttoned down out of respect for women. This is what happen when we get a Petticoat Navy… and rest assured our enemies don’t have a co-ed arrangement to weaken them. We really become a nation of wimps – if we can’t handle male nature, we’re not going to be able to able to stand up to America’s enemies. And a politically correct military won’t do what the military is supposed to do, to defend the country.

NormanF on January 3, 2011 at 6:18 pm

For those of us who studied history, the US Navy was created in 1801 (over 200 years ago) during the beginning days of the Jefferson administration, Thomas Jefferson created the US Navy because our merchant ships was being under attack on the North African coast by guess who? Muslim pirates! He created the navy so we could beat down those verminist muslim pirates that snuck attacked our merchant-ships. Nowadays, our navy is sorta like a nursery, the reason why I say that is because some of the females in the navy are pregnant and give birth infants, etc. And you have a point on this Debbie. As for gay folks serving in our military, Debbie, your entitled to your own opinion that gays shouldn’t serve, if gays want to serve and want to fight and kill our enemies (who are the islamofascist losers), then that’s fine with me. As for the so-called “don’t-ask-don’t-tell”, I disagree with that, and the only ones who are pushing this garbage are the militant radical gay-fascist!

Sean R. on January 3, 2011 at 3:50 pm

I think we should be more concerned by a commander-in-chief who refuses to recognize the nature of the enemy..islamofascism. The way Obama talks, the enemy is just another criminal.

Of course, in Obama’s eyes, the real threat is Israel. Once he is re-elected, he will unleash his anger on the only democracy in the Middle East.

Jonathan Grant on January 3, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Jon… I leave nothing past Obama. He hasn’t given up on his aim but he has his hands full at home. Should he get re-elected, he’ll be free to do what you rightly fear.

NormanF on January 3, 2011 at 4:33 pm

Well, Fisher’s post is completely off subject. Apparently, this person was either faking poor English or got someone to help him write this screed today.

I’m sure that readers of this site know that the Muslims are the biggest block in the UN with 56 members, so of course the UN is going to criticize everything Israel does. Of course they want to get rid of Israel’s nuclear capability, assuming it exists, as they believe it will be easier to destroy the country.

The situation of the Liberty was exhaustively dealt with in the post about Oprah, where Fisher, with his various aliases, raised it interminably. If this person is Pat Buchanan, is he writing here because his own readership has declined & he wants new readers?

LA: I was forced to remove Fisher’s anti-Semitic, anti-Israel, completely off-base, off-topic comment. But FYI, the best book refuting the anti-Israel crowd on the U.S.S. Liberty incident is Judge A. Jay Cristol’s book, The Liberty Incident: The 1967 Attack on the U.S. Navy Spy Ship. I recommend it highly. DS

Little Al on January 3, 2011 at 4:44 pm

I would also add that when guys like Fisher bring in conspiracy theories, you know they’re not to be taken seriously. Any one who is not bothered to look up the facts for themselves doesn’t deserve the time of day.

NormanF on January 3, 2011 at 6:09 pm

I’ve done my time on U.S. Navy ships and have a pretty darn good idea of what passes for entertainment. When you’re stuck in the middle of the Persian Gulf for say three and half months (I was) without seeing a port call time can begin to drag. It’s the same routine over and over, same food, same shipmates, same work assignments, same movies. We watched the movie “Top Gun” every day for 105 days while forward deployed to the Gulf. I don’t condone what this particular ships company or CO may or may not have done but I don’t condemn it either. It’s meaningless, just a bunch of bored, tired and probably horny sailors passing the time. And for the record, I spent 24 years in the Navy.

Debbie and everybody else on this board, the poster “Fisher” reminds of this poster who used to post on Andrew Breitbart’s (I know your not a fan of Mr. Breitbart, Debbie), he used all sorts of anti-semetic remarks, comments, bashed Israel in about every post this friggin guy wrote, and used all sorts of consipiracy theories against jews and Israel. And guess what, this former poster on Breitbart identified himself as a “conservative”! I believe Fisher is that same person who used to post on Breitbart’s (and I’m a former poster from Breitbart, I stopped posting on his site because Breitbart made every excuse for Sean “Wallbanger” Hannity and his freedom concert scams) message boards? And I believe Fisher is a “Pat Buchanan conservative”, who is actually a “far-right winger” instead of regular centrist-right wingers like the rest of us here and the rest of the conservatives in this country!

I dont get it.. the liberal media cries foul, this Captain’s behavior was inapropriate. Yes it was.. but is it any more disgusting than allowing homosexuality in the military. You see, morality is only applied when it doesnt affect the stench of the liberals. I wonder what would have happened if this commander would have made a video preaching about the Bible and Jesus Christ, then the same liberal pinheads would have had him fired for offending muslims and accused him of being on the far right. You liberals have destroyed the UCMJ, you have destroyed the core values of the US armed forces and as a veteran I am ashamed of this president, who for a few million dollars in campaign contributions from the Gay community, has now turned the most powerful military in the world in to a pit of lechery. What this Captain did pales in comparison.

The same shocked nags that want this Officer’s career ruined are the same peeps who want Barney’s Frank forgiven for having a prostitution ring out of is home (run by then boy-toy “Hot Bottom”) and growing wacky-weed in his yard. And Barney’s Frank still gets re-elected from the said scolds.

The same tsk-ing tools who want this Officer’s career ruined gave Charlie Rangel a standing O when he was slapped on the wrist for his many crimes.

Liberals are destroying this country. They are your enemy. They will enable the mooooooslims to eventualy ruin the world. Look how most can’t even admit to the obvious.

I’m disappointed in you Debbie. A person of your wit and talent missing this opportunity to poke a finger in the eye of management and throw a little gas on the fire of PC.
This would have been a good place to put the youtube video of the Village Peoples great song In The Navy.

Army Guy on January 3, 2011 at 10:12 pm

No, she is trying to respond to a serious issue in a way that will appeal to more than a few middle schoolers. This is another attempt to cast military personnel in a very poor light, and it will have serious repercussions. Obviously some of those involved in these activities maliciously released these materials that as Debbie said were not meant for public viewing. Would you like someone to tape your sexual activities, and then put them on Comcast’s Pay Per View?

    Worry01 on January 4, 2011 at 12:35 am

I am female and served in the military as a medic. I see nothing wrong with women in the military. HOWEVER, women should be more behind the scenes in traditional support roles then out on the front lines or on ships and submarines. I think that the big problem now is just the new generation itself. My sister is about to retire from the Air Force soon and I hear so many stories from her and others about the total lack of respect for rank, the poor work ethic and the ridiculous sensitivity of a lot of these younger kids. It is ridiculous how much sensitivity training they have to endure. War is not sensitive and I have to agree with you that the U.S. is becoming a nation of hyper-sensitive wimps!

Another attack on the military – whats next?

Jason Hains on January 4, 2011 at 6:15 am

And for the record I hope they find whichever A-Hole leaked this.

Jason Hains on January 4, 2011 at 7:44 am

As a former sailor, let me tell you that people these days lack any semblance of thick skin – the stuff of which true leadership and resolve are created.

F— everyone if they can’t take a joke or two. Being a sailor can get you or a whole bunch of people killed, hence the salty sense of humour.

As for Mr. Fisher – whom I had the “pleasure” of reading his “opinions”, there is a proper forum to air his “grievances”: stormfront.org. Gotta be careful when you let someone from the Aryan Nations get loose with a netbook.

KING HUSSEIN OBAMA is out to make the military a social experiment. How well did it work for public schools?

CaliforniaScreaming on January 4, 2011 at 9:24 am

I served on the Enterprise during Vietnam. Debbie has hit the fucking bulls eye on this bullshit. If we would have had women and gays on board back then nothing would have gotten done. Maybe time has passed me by in this politically correct fucked up world, but climbing up some woman’s ass in a bomb bay would have indeed been distracting in Nam and during the tense North Korean crisis.

I am shocked-SHOCKED-that sailors on an aircraft carrier thousands of miles away watch lewd videoes! Something must be done about this!

Jerry Jones on January 4, 2011 at 9:46 pm

While the videos are crappy at best, the XO-4 plus years ago-tarnished “Honor” in the core values trinity (Honor Courage Commitment). Heck, a few years back, an XO I served with ALWAYS showed “Blazing Saddles” during “movie night.” BFD right?
2:1 the “whistle blower” (no pun intended) was/is probably someone who is 1) homosexual, 2) had “words” or Captains Mast/XO inquiry by/with the XO, and 3) had an ax to grind with him and has/had ties to upper level management (“Gay-Lesbian agenda”). He should be releived of his duties as an XO, BUT not releived of his Navy career period. Put him at Nelles, or aboard Del Mar.
As far as “Anti-Muslim” angles…
I remember in the days of the “Iran Hostage Crisis,” t-shirts of “Mickey Mouse” flipping Iran the “bird”- “Hey Iran! *middle finger extended*.
Or, during Persian Gulf I (Desert Shield/Storm) t-shirts with, “I’d fly a thousand miles to smoke a Camel.”
BFD.
One “aww shiite” wipes out a thousand “Atta boys.”
(Is that a pun or not?)
