“Crash Moment”: Oprah Goes to N’Awlins, Embraces Kanye “Bush Doesn’t Care About Black People” West

By Debbie Schlussel
Since I , Friday, Oprah has made a sudden change in plans.
Oprah’s sudden changes in planned broadcasts of her show, next week, speak volumes. On Tuesday, she will feature a live “Look at Me in N’Awlins Damage” show. Then, in a not-so veiled message, she has an interesting show from the Oprah archives selected for Thursday. Originally not scheduled to air then, Oprah will now show an episode on Thursday featuring Kanye “George Bush Doesn’t Care About Black People” West. It was taped back in April, so why wait until now–after his absurd remarks (to which Oprah probably subscribes) on Friday Night?
The show is interestingly entitled “How My Worst Moment Made Me a Star.” We all know which “Worst Moment” of his made Kanye West a bigger star then he ever was–Friday Night’s “George Bush Doesn’t Care About Black People” comment. (Since the show was taped in April, it is about West’s Grammy win.)
Is Oprah trying to tell us something, by suddenly choosing to show that episode two days after her “Oprah Poses in N’awlins Devastation” show? I report. You decide.
As I wrote on Friday, Oprah was nowhere to be found during the Hurricane devastation, last week. Instead, in an incredible display of insensitivity, she showed re-runs of her and Stedman’s “daughter” dog problems and “Gorgeous Men of Decorating”–while people in the key demographic that made her wealthy beyond her wildest dreams were suffering, starving, and dying. Had she done a live hour to raise money for the victims of Katrina, she would have been the hero she wants everyone to believe she is (and too many morons actually buy it, despite the evidence to the contrary).
At the time I wrote that, Oprah had a tiny link at the bottom of her website to give to Hurricaid. That’s it. Her scheduled shows for the following week (this coming week) were all re-runs. Now, things have changed–a little. The Big “O” will have a live “Oprah” from the site of the Hurricane damage show. A little late. And Oprah is not a member of law enforcement. Her presence there couldn’t possibly help and will only get in the way. Instead of going there to be loved by her fans a la race merchant Jesse Jackson, Oprah could have done a live telethon show from her Chicago studios, last week. She did not.
On Monday, she plans a show with hip pop stars. Then on Tuesday, she will do her live “Oprah on the scene of Katrina” show, telling us what happened there–as if we didn’t already know. We already know what happened there, courtesy of a gazillion REAL news organizations, who’ve been there while Oprah was AWOL. We do not need her reports now. The people there needed her help raising money, etc., last week. That Oprah will now be in New Orleans figuratively (and perhaps literally) standing on top of the dead bodies in the watery crypt to say, “Hey, look at me, Oprah, I’m here, too,” is sickening. Her self-insertion into everything, even when it is unwarranted, as here, is annoying–and, in this deadly crisis, it is appalling.
It is interesting. Oprah’s haste, right after 9/11–to re-vamp her schedule and have Muslim women tell us that Islam is peace on several “emergency” shows–is a haste unmatched, last week, regarding the victims of Hurricane Katrina (who just happen to be among the demographic that made Oprah so wealthy). Apparently, they don’t merit the immediate concern Oprah’s Islamist friends do.
So, with the sluggish response by Oprah to the Hurricane damage, and then her revamped broadcast featuring Kanye “George Bush Doesn’t Care About Black People” West, I ask this:
Does Oprah Care About Black People (other than herself, and best “friend” Gayle)?
Just curious.
Recently, Oprah whined about being shut out of Hermes in Paris after they closed for business as an example of racism–her “Crash moment,” she called it (based on the movie about race).
Well, last week, was America’s “Crash” moment with Oprah. But it was much bigger and more important than buying a silly designer watch for Tina Turner. And like Hermes, Oprah Winfrey was closed for business.

Aw, don’t be too hard on Oprah:
While the flood victims are crawling on the ground foraging for food, clothes, and other necessities…..
Oprah’s still reeling from the Handbag fiasco. The injustice of her not being let in to buy a $2000.00 Hermes Handbag, after hours, at the exclusive store Hermes store.
So you see, she’s faced just as much injustice as anyone else. I wonder if Oprah ever did manage to get her good friend Tina Turner that handbag. Maybe we all need to send money to Oprah’s handbag fund. The injustice of it all!

Just a moment….Oprah’s black? Imagaine that. It has been apparent that the current administration has been pressing the ignore button each day the south has been in dire straights with Katrinia. If this weather pattern had struck New York City, it would have been taken care of by now. If it had struck Chicago, who knows? Why does the current regime care so little about ‘these’ people? Maybe it’s the same reason why herion, crack cocaine and other substances are allowed into segments of this country. They don’t matter. Consider for how long and for all of those in power to whom they do not matter.
As tragic as all of this Katrinia business is, take a long look at the bigger picture. What are the long term results of it all? Americans deciding they chose the wrong president for a second term. George W. unable to leave the legacy he dreamed of? Soldiers over in the Gulf along with millions (or billions) of our tax dollars being spent there to clean up a mess. What about this mess? What are the religious right going to do next? How will spin doctors and the others with the power of the pen, power of the press or those with the ultimate power get out of Dodge? Stay tuned, or listen for the sound of the drum. This revolution may or may not be televised.

As I go out of my way not to hear of “rappers or rappettes”,up til two seconds ago,I never heard of the no-talent-“I’m not James”West until he recently appeared on the cover of TIME;then I caught his no-talent act on TODAY.Then the disaster hit-and now he’s a leading contender for Time’s ‘Men Of The Year Award’ with America’s other most worthless therapists-Oprah and Phil.

How fascinating that everyone has chosen to blast Oprah for not responding more quickly to the Katrina disaster. How interesting you want to blast Kanye West for speaking out on what’s on the minds of so many Americans (or maybe it’s just what’s on the minds of BLACK Americans). How dare you attack Oprah for not acting more quickly. What have you done to help out, hmmmm? What has Donald Trump done? How about Bill Gates, or any of the other super-rich??? I haven’t heard of anything they’ve done, but I don’t see you blasting them so quickly. John Travolta just reacted and has started doing something to help. Where are the comments blasting him???? And while we’re on the subject, since when did Oprah become responsible for doing the job that our government failed and refused to do????? You are attacking her for being rich and black. You are ridiculing her “Crash” moment because she is black and you just don’t and can’t understand what it feels like to still be discriminated against in the year 2005. Many, many of the rich expect the same privileges. Is it okay for them to expect those same privileges because they’re not black????
As far as Kanye West’s comments — sounds like he hit a sore spot. This WAS a racial issue. Bush does not care about blacks. If he did, there wouldn’t have been such a delay in getting the help that was needed more quickly. George Bush and his government respond faster to disasters in every other part of the world than what with all the poor blacks in “Nawlins”.
I guess the truth hurts when you hear it.

V. Christian on September 6, 2005 at 10:49 am

Yo’ V’.the truth is West is a broken boring record
who this jazz fan never heard of before his typically obnoxious rap comment regarding Bush.To watch the coverage of the disaster, until Aaron Broussard-prez of the neighboring Jefferson Parish finally got on-and was hugged by a black resident as “a hero” for busting his ass,the majority of TV comments have been similar to your dumb ones.

jaywilton on September 6, 2005 at 11:05 am

Sorry for the multiple trackbacks!

An American Housewife on September 6, 2005 at 11:28 am

Yo “J” I think your comments are dumb, and I don’t care how many blacks you see hugging anyone on tv. You ask yourself how soon help was given after Ivan and Camille. How soon did the rescue efforts begin after 911. How soon did our government get help, including food and water out to the tsunami victims. THEN you can speak with some intelligence. Just like my grandma always said — the truth hurts! This country and its president care little for its poor and especially its blacks.
And I don’t know what rock you live under, but being a jazz fan does not preclude anyone from being familiar with other music genres. I love jazz, but I have a television and go to record stores and THEREFORE know who Kanye West is and what type of music he makes. Take a listen. Maybe you’ll learn something . . . . . . .

V. Christian on September 6, 2005 at 12:06 pm

Yo V’,I couldn’t avoid seeing West; That’s why I know he’s an obnoxious black idiot and part of a
crowd that is a disaster for black music. If you knew anything about black music, you’d understand why black jazz critic Stanley Crouch refers to rap
as a “minstrel show”.Also, going by morons(ettes) like you, anyone seeing this on tv,has to seriously wonder whether any whites actually were
victimized-and I’m real sure you have the answer for “white” investment in the city.So stop listening to (H)Oprah,Jesse”The Extortionist”Jackson and “I ain’t James”West-and maybe you’ll learn two plus two.

jaywilton on September 6, 2005 at 2:37 pm

First I would like to tell you the comments that bother me most is that everyone is jealous of Oprah and her money get out and get a job if you want money she has worked her way to success fair and square. and as for George bush – he is the worst president of all time !!! there was no reason we did not have food and water ready to go out the second that katrina had pasted new orleans. Bush needs to get his head out of his ass and quit worring about making money for his own pocket !!! He is worthless and cocky and I can not stand too listen to his talk about what he is going to do all the time for this country and nothing ever happens . keep talkin Bush your time is almost up anyways!!!! Useless !!! commpletely useless. Black or white they are americans and deserve to be treated that way !!!!
