Terrorists Won: TSA Broke Man’s Urostomy Bag, Piss All Over

By Debbie Schlussel

Sorry to use the word, “piss,” in a headline or even a post on this site.  But this case demands it because the piss is not just all over the subject of the post, but all over all Americans.  Yes, the terrorists won on 9/11 and every time they try something thereafter.  Their underwear and package bombs may have failed in exploding cargo planes, but they succeeded on a much larger scale, in the wholesale molestation and embarrassment of Americans whose only crime is buying an airline ticket and showing up on time to the terminal.  And in the case of Thomas Sawyer, a cancer survivor, the terrorists got a huge bounty:  the utter embarrassment of a decent man who’s already gone through enough, but had to endure more at the hands of way-too-aggressive TSA screeners.

More:

A retired special education teacher on his way to a wedding in Orlando, Fla., said he was left humiliated, crying and covered with his own urine after an enhanced pat-down by TSA officers recently at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

“I was absolutely humiliated, I couldn’t even speak,” said Thomas D. “Tom” Sawyer, 61, of Lansing, Mich.

Sawyer is a bladder cancer survivor who now wears a urostomy bag, which collects his urine from a stoma, or opening in his abdomen. “I have to wear special clothes and in order to mount the bag I have to seal a wafer to my stomach and then attach the bag. If the seal is broken, urine can leak all over my body and clothes.”

On Nov. 7, Sawyer said he went through the security scanner at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. “Evidently the scanner picked up on my urostomy bag, because I was chosen for a pat-down procedure.”

Due to his medical condition, Sawyer asked to be screened in private. “One officer looked at another, rolled his eyes and said that they really didn’t have any place to take me,” said Sawyer. “After I said again that I’d like privacy, they took me to an office.”

Sawyer wears pants two sizes too large in order to accommodate the medical equipment he wears. He’d taken off his belt to go through the scanner and once in the office with security personnel, his pants fell down around his ankles. “I had to ask twice if it was OK to pull up my shorts,” said Sawyer, “And every time I tried to tell them about my medical condition, they said they didn’t need to know about that.” . . .

“One agent watched as the other used his flat hand to go slowly down my chest. I tried to warn him that he would hit the bag and break the seal on my bag, but he ignored me. Sure enough, the seal was broken and urine started dribbling down my shirt and my leg and into my pants.” . . .

Humiliated, upset and wet, Sawyer said he had to walk through the airport soaked in urine, board his plane and wait until after takeoff before he could clean up.

If we are subjecting ourselves to this kind of treatment, this kind of humiliation, it is an even bigger victory than the murder of 3,000 lives. With all due respect to the memory of those innocents who were murdered in cold blood by 19 Arab Muslims, the aggressive TSA molestation is the long-term American minstrel show suffered by hundreds of thousands, which the terrorists ultimately hoped for.

As I’ve said before on this site, the scariest experience is not “Flying While Muslim” or “Flying While Arab.” It’s Flying While American . . . especially if you are a non-Muslim. While this poor man, Thomas Sawyer was literally forced to fly with piss all over, the piss is on all American travelers, frankly, because we refuse to demand the TSA do the right thing: profiling.

Debbie, that’s not the worst of it.

Now dress up as a Muslim and see if they frisk you that aggressively at the airport.

I bet they will let you through with flying colors! And this decent American didn’t deserve this kind of treatment at the hands of our own government.

That’s why they’re laughing at us in the Muslim World!

NormanF on November 22, 2010 at 1:31 pm

The muslim terrorists are laughing in their caves. Our (Obama’s) incompetence is out there for all to see. Our “Intelligence” reacts – is not pro-active. “After the fact security.” Our TSA “Create-a-job” folks have not caught ONE terrorists here since day one! Airplane terrorists are caught by PASSENGHERS! We need to look to Israel for guidance on airport security…..a thing that this anti-semitic administration will not do. Hopefully, we can survive for two more years at which point we can throw out this leftist, pro islam administration. However, they will still have their enablers in the media.

Pray for our nation. (Can we still say that?

The TSA is a frigging (pardon my French) joke. I’m a (European) Israeli who travels frequently to the US (mostly on business) and while there I usually do at least 3 US domestic flights.

On the average, every other flight I get treated to the “special” procedure.

The security at Ben Gurion (Tel Aviv) airport don’t ask you to remove your shoes. They don’t ask you to leave your lighter (there was a time the TSA didn’t allow those). They don’t keep you waiting for hours. And, if you do get selected for the “special” procedure, once done, they will escort you through the rest of the process so that you’ll still make your flight.

The TSA is (unfortunately) a very (sad) joke…

Sue the bastards. A successful suit is just what’s needed to make the TSA staff and their leaders re-think their arbitrary and often dispassionate rules.

Richard on November 22, 2010 at 2:05 pm

Debbie, you are not including a rather important part of the TSA story.

Most of the TSA agents are black. Some whites, particularly at BWI (Baltimore Washington International Airport), have been put through hell, and a few had racial taunts tossed their way by TSA agents. A rare occasion, but once is too much.

Would this man have been treated in such a way if he had been Arab? No. If he had been black? Doubtful.

Many TSA agents are not dutiful, but dumb and malicious.

Jonathan Grant on November 22, 2010 at 2:33 pm

The TSA wouldn’t have the brains to place girl-next-door TSA gropers-sexual molesters there to fondle and grope male travelers, or whatever type of man women might like to give them a thrill, as that sicko “Feminist” attorney expressed at her pleasure in being groped, stating that she has not been touched like that in years. (ha, ha, ha. That’s as funny as a screen door in a submarine!)

I love to travel with my wife and children, but I do NOT want to travel by air, or any other mode of transportation, which is engaging in abuse of law abiding citizens like this while taking extra pains to not offend Muslims, the members of the same group which engaged in the attacks which our government claims led to this draconian, fascist state behavior.

Just to confirm what the politically correct chose NOT to discuss, NPR’s Dianne Riehm had a piece this morning on the new TSA security protocols. Throughout the hour program there was not a single reference to Islam or Muslims, despite the fact that they are the source of the underlying threat. There was one reference to Israel and their policy of profiling as an alternative approach. But the main focus of the hour was the full-body scanners, the potential for mass action among the pre-Thanksgiving Day travelers, and the “adjustments” being made to make those pat-downs “less intrusive”.

And as if things were not outrageous enough, Muslim groups like CAIR are insisting on special accommodations to these security protocols – that examination of female Muslim travelers be limited to their head and neck only and only using a “self-pat” by the traveler… and TSA is reportedly “considering” the request!

The insensitivity, indifference and arrogance of TSA toward those subject to their actions is truly disturbing. Those who humiliate another in public need to be held to account.

Raymond in DC on November 22, 2010 at 3:08 pm

We all know that the TSA does not care about discomfort to passengers. With a few exceptions, government bureaucrats lack social skills and real social maturity; if they were truly adults, with emotional maturity, they would be working in private industry where getting along with people is, with a few exceptions, a requirement. Like the scowling bureaucrat who wears a ‘smile’ button.

I’m sure this airport intrusion has nothing to do with the fact that a terrorist was almost acquitted on all accounts during Holder’s show trial. Now the Government can say that they are doing something to fight terrorists, and can self-righteously say that they regret the discomfort to millions of people, but, duh, they need to do this to fight terrorism. And they hope that most of us, even though we’re inconvenienced and angry over the airport inspections, will say “well, at least they are fighting terrorism.”

They hope that people will forget about the incompetent Justice (sic) Dept. attorneys and phony trials that kowtow to the terrorists. They hope we will not bother to find out about their treacherous foreign policy. The talk-show bunch are helping. They are talking about gays in the military at a time when the US is giving up all rights to missile defense. But on and on about gay rights — an issue appropriate to discuss, but let’s face it, not as important as missile defense.

So they will keep inconveniencing people at airports until the groundswell gets too large, or until they think people will forget all their other capitulations to the terrorists.

Little Al on November 22, 2010 at 3:48 pm

That guy should sue the TSA.

The American people should sue the TSA until they “cry uncle” and discontinue this stuff.

The Israelis do indeed do profiling. But they do threat based profiling. In other words, they don’t pick you out just because you’re an Arab. In fact, most Arab Israelis go through pretty quick.

They’ll pick you out if, for example, you have a bunch of stamps from Lebanon and Syria in your passport. And, they’ll pick you out if you display any of a myriad “tell tales”. Picked up by roving undercover and remote observers.

It’s threat based profiling and the TSA shouldn’t have a problem with that sort of profiling.

Eliezer: What you have to say is spot on! However, if I may add something–Israeli security checks in the airports are done by people who are, first of all, adept, considerate, but firm.

Secondly, many of them have real backgrounds in security and security procedures.

Thirdly, they are all top-notch TRAINABLE individuals that have a vocabulary beyond the Homer Simpson “Doh!”

In addition, they would be absolutely ashamed to treat anyone with the kind of indignities perpetrated by these security wannabees of the TSA.

I have been saying this forever. They are trying to bankrupt our system by making us scared to death, all the time.

Rush Limbaugh today said best-TSA stands for Tough S**t America!

TY: Uh, You mean I Said IT Best. Check out the graphic on this post and others from previously in the day. Guess where he got it from but didn’t give credit? I’ve been using that for a long time on this site and sent him a link to a story he used today. He saw it. DS

T. Y. on November 22, 2010 at 6:54 pm

this is getting worse by the day and the same crap is happening here in Canada too friends – if the powers that be had an iota of intelligence they would adopt the exact same system as our friends in Israel…plain and simple

BIG IRISH on November 22, 2010 at 7:28 pm

…and I love that saying…”not all muslims are terrorists but almost all terrorists are muslim”….rings true….Profiling?…DAMN RIGHT!!!

BIG IRISH on November 22, 2010 at 7:37 pm

2010 is like watching American lambs to the slaughter. These idiots are so oblivious to what the constitution is and that what we have should NOT be taken for granted…and is not guaranteed forever.

Two years into Obamarxist’s reign and people are still asleep. The have no idea of the creeping incrementalism of the left.

This past week I have heard others lament about smoke nazis (and the loss of freedom of choice of smoking) and saying today “Blazing Saddles” could never be made (or remade). On the surface it seems esoteric, but I say these are great freedoms lost.

And now the disgrace of the TSA. Oh yes, the jihadists have won. People will not do what is right and just care about their Thanksgiving and their expediency. I say even if it is inconvenient, a group of peeps HAS to do something to put the kibosh on this 4th amendment violation. If not now, when?

Americans. Asleep at the wheel. When will it be too late? It’s sad to see.

Skunky on November 22, 2010 at 8:51 pm

When we fly again, if they are still doing this nonsense, I’ll have everyone in my family, including me, dress in full Muslim garb, from head to tow, with the burkha and the head covering, obscuring our entire body.

Then they will let us go through without a second look, or a grope, or anything.

Afterward we can fold the garb and place it in our carry-on luggage for future use.

(/sarcasm = off)

William on November 23, 2010 at 1:32 am

Are there any stories circulating about Muslims claiming a religious modesty-type argument to avoid the x-ray AND pat-down? I wonder how that would go… I’m sure there are lawsuits on the way if a Muslim is subjected to either of these humiliations. Abu Ghraib had nothing over the humiliation at Logan Airport.

Anonymous on November 23, 2010 at 10:15 am

Notice how many TSA agents are minorities and low-IQ whites . . . . They are going to show as much common sense and compassion for customers as the folks who work in the Post Office and the DMV. We are becoming a third world country before our very eyes — and most Americans are going along with it, like sheep. My patriotism is being sorely tested these days. Remind me, what is so great about America circa 2010?

Hank R. on November 23, 2010 at 11:08 am

Why doesn’t Congress or the Senators have to go thru the groping process…..I see a House representative was waived directly thru the screeners…….like everything else, Medicare, Insurance, Pensions these people are exemtp from all this crap…….WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE ITS TO LATE
