The New “Tolerance”: Kicking Students Out of Class for Not Supporting Gays; Rainbow Flag – Yes, Confederate Flag – No

By Debbie Schlussel

As we’ve long known, intolerance is now the definition of “tolerance.”  If we accept Islamic intolerance of Western values and Islam’s wish to eliminate Jews and Christians from the planet, we are “tolerant.”  If we accept and are open to homicide bombings by Islamic terrorist groups, we are “tolerant.”  If we accept freedom of speech and are open to those whose traditional Judeo-Christian values do not condone the absurd and the deviant, we are “intolerant.”

Detroit Free Press Headline Celebrates Intolerant Teacher Jay McDowell

And we celebrate those who are intolerant as the “tolerant.”  Such is the case with Howell, Michigan High shool teacher Jay McDowell.  He kicked a student out of class for that student’s “crime” of saying he didn’t accept gays because it was against his religion.  To most of us who have a normal allotment of IQ points and some critical thinking skills, what McDowell did was INtolerant.  And it violated that student’s First Amendment speech and religion rights.  McDowell was suspended for one day without pay.  Oh, and that was after McDowell told another student she must remove her Confederate flag buckle.  McDowell got upset when another student asked why Confederate flags had to go but gay rainbow flags could remain.

You’d think that the liberals on this earth would find McDowell’s intolerance appalling.  You know, the same liberals who forever lecture us that we must allow convicted Islamic terrorists and others to preach hatred of the West and the mass murder of non-Muslims, all in the name of free speech and the open exchange of ideas, no matter how repulsive.  But you’d be wrong.  Nope, McDowell is being celebrated.  Instead, they are celebrating McDowell as “Teaching Tolerance.”  That’s the headline in the print edition of today’s Detroit Free Press (the online edition removed that part, apparently).  No, not the headline of an editorial, but the opinionated headline of a supposedly objective newspaper article.

Jay McDowell should be fired.  He doesn’t know the definitions of basic words like, “tolerance.”  Instead, he teaches definitions via his behavior, which are the exact opposite of the meanings of those words.  He also teaches students what to think, instead of how to think.

And he’s badly in need of a dictionary.  And a case of sensitivity training.  Jay McDowell, a tax-paid, public employee, needs to learn tolerance for those with whose positions he doesn’t agree.

Sadly, the mainstream media is celebrating him.  So, he’ll never learn.  If I were the student kicked out of class, I’d be contacting the ACLU or some other lawyer.  And Jay McDowell and the Howell Public Schools would soon be defendants.  And if the student is reading this, I’d love to represent him in this case.  Mr. McDowell’s intolerance here is illegal and unconstitutional.

Apparently, the only people who get “tolerance,” these days in America, are Islamic bigots and murderers and boys who dress like girls.  G-d help the suicidal West.

It has been said that a Conservative is a Liberal who has just been mugged.
Along those lines, how will these “Tolerant” people behave once they become victims of what they have been ‘Tolerant’ of…

Shootist on November 16, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Liberals don’t like straight people and they don’t like Southerners!

How lovely! Such views guarantee they will remain a minority in this country.

NormanF on November 16, 2010 at 1:00 pm

There is an organization specifically aimed at dealing with episodes such as this one.

They are strong advocates for students’ rights to not be indoctrinated or intimidated by teachers, and are very successful in getting corrections made.

KJ: I removed the link because that organization actually fights for the free speech of Islamic terrorists. They attacked me because I fought to keep Islamic terrorist Sami Al-Arian from uttering his calls for the murder of Jews and Christians on the University of Michigan campus. Sorry, but yelling fire in a crowded theater is only legal when there really is a fire there. And inciting murder isn’t legal. DS

HOLD THE TRAIN!

Islam is “tolerated” (celebrated is more like it) yet is itself intolerant of Gays.

WTF?

Sam Adams on November 16, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Debbie,

I am a huge fan of yours and agree with everything you write and stand for. And the following hypothetical is certainly not what happened here. But I am curious how you would respond to the following situation: Let’s say it was a Muslim student who said homosexuality is against his religion, and he didn’t want to tolerate gays. Would you endorse the Muslim student being kicked out of class?

W: I believe in free speech in public schools. I don’t believe in free immigration of America’s enemies into the U.S. In my world, the Muslims would be saying this in their classrooms in Greater Barbaria, and they wouldn’t be in America’s classrooms. DS

Wearephucked on November 16, 2010 at 2:00 pm

If assimilation of Muslims worked, then Debbie wouldn’t be writing so much about them.

Since its clear it doesn’t work, we have no business allowing them to settle in this country and imposing their 7th Century way of life on the rest of us.

NormanF on November 16, 2010 at 5:42 pm

I saw this story yesterday. It was reported that the teacher kicked out a student for bullying a gay kid. As that was reported, I thought it was a great thing, and I couldn’t for the life of me understand why the teacher was suspended.

Debbie, I assume that if the boy had been bullying the gay kid (being physically or verbally abusive towards him), you would have agreed with the teacher. Am I right?

But stating a view is not “bullying”. The only bullying that went on here was done by the teacher.

L: Exactly. DS

Lisa on November 16, 2010 at 2:35 pm

Saying in a public schoolroom that one doesn’t accept gays can be construed as encouraging violence towards the gay classmate. The same holds true about viewpoints saying that one doesn’t want blacks or browns in the same room. Teachers are faced with the difficult task of allowing free speech, but stopping speech that incites violence. Bullies usually win this o e because they can claim it was only a viewpoint. But, when kids are beaten up or resort to suicide attempts because they can’t handle hearing the “viewpoints” any longer, then people wonder how this could have happened.

Mark Yelka on February 8, 2011 at 3:39 am

To Wearwphucked, that’s a good question, what if a muslim student decides that he or she won’t tolerate gay people in general, I think that the school board(s) probably won’t do anything to that muslim person, and you know why, because in this country we have a few muslim pressure groups that may file a lawsuit against that school for “discrimination”! And to all of you rabid leftist nutjobs out there, YOUR DAYS OF BSING WITH WE THE AMERICAN PUBLIC ARE NUMBERED, FOR YEARS YOU’VE SMEARED, SNICKERED, ETC. TOWARDS US WITH YOUR SO-CALLED “DIVERSITY” & “(IN)TOLERANCE”, I GOT NEWS FOR YOU, ALL OF YOU LEFT WING PRESSURE GROUPS WILL FACE SOME TYPE OF INVESTIGATION! You left wingers are so lucky that I personally am not in politics, if I was in politics, I would demand investigations for Media Matters, moveon.org, George Soros, ACORN, La Raza, CAIR, Muslim Brotherhood, NAACP, Black Panther Party, Nation of Islam, Aryan Nation, etc. If I were in politics, I would clean up and improve this country within a matter of months!

McDowell’s brand of tolerance is garbage. Aside from the fact that the student had every right to her Confederate flag, it was on a bloody belt buckle, which would be hidden while seated in a desk for 80% of the day, and in no way would have been distracting even IF a student was “offended” by the buckle.

As for the student who was dismissed for saying his religious views obliged him to not accept gay people…big friggin’ deal. A decade ago, I got to listen to the cliched and moronic argument of “Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve” during a class discussion on gay marriage, and it did no harm to the 2 or 3 of us gay folk in the class.

Dismissing an opposing opinion from the room during a discussion (which I’m fairly sure was the context of the kid’s mild utterance of non-acceptance) will only stifle productive discussion between queer kids and non-accepting kids.

As Ayaan Hirsi Ali put it,”…with like-minded people one cannot discuss. With like-minded people one can only participate in a church service, and, as is widely known, I do not like church services.”

Robert on November 16, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Maybe if you had understood the point of “Adam & Steve,” you would not be so confused now.

A man’s organ of life does not belong in a poop chute, because it is against biology. When a man ejaculates into a rectum he is celebrating death, pure and simple. No amount of rationalization can change that physical and biological reality.

It has always been a mystery to me why some conservative lawyer, I they’re some out there hasn’t challenged these inconsistancies in our first amendment rights. It conceres me when in movies and such the terms “Thank God” or “Jesus Christ” are cencored as though they’re swear words or profane. If you were to carry this way of thinking to its conclusion sooner or later it will be wrong to worship christianty. However there’s never a challenge against those who feel its they’re first amendment right to say God or Jesus.
Also Islam can be so contridictory when they are intolerant of Gays however behind closed doors or deep in they’re seedy underbelly they have a tradition of indoctrinating young boys for sexual pleasure and God knows what else.

Anthony on November 16, 2010 at 3:07 pm

That boy should’ve just kept his mouth shut, and yes that girl with the Confederate belt buckle should’ve removed it. The Confederate flag is truly anti-American.

NB on November 16, 2010 at 3:15 pm

i spent most of 2010 in south carolina and found that many southerners’ consider the confederate flag a symbol of local southern pride, nothing more.

i was also surprised to see a building used as an open market where many vendors selling sweetgrass baskets were blacks, had the inscription carved into the limestone, “daughters of the confederacy”. apparently doing a good business — in the heart of tourist garnd central of downtown charleston — trumps blacks / liberals objections to anything to do with the confederacy as evil???

    howardroark43 on November 16, 2010 at 5:18 pm

NB, I’m going to disagree with you pal, as you said that the Confederate flag is anti-american, that’s absurd, and I assume your going to say it’s “racist”. I happen to be black guy myself and I’m not offended by the confederate flag, the confederate flag is a southern tradition which is also apart of this country, please study US history 101! In other words NB your taking the side of the school board for being pretty fascistic about the poor boy and girl, and I also assume you’ll support the so-called “Rainbow Flag” and say it’s american? Pathetic!

“A nation is identified by it’s borders, language & culture!”

Sean R. on November 16, 2010 at 3:30 pm

The people who think the Confederate flag is racist are the same people who think the Civil War was fought over slavery. It was not. It was fought over the states’ rights to govern themselves, vs. Lincoln’s idea of federalism. Federalism won, and has been getting more powerful every year.

The abolistionist movement was strong in the North, and the managed to tack it onto the Federalist agenda. However, there were some Northern slavers who objected to that.

Oh, and incidentally, there were also black slave-owners. So, go figure.

The Confederate flag is not about race. It’s about patriotism for your state and the confederacy of states that banded together to fight for their rights. It was really a second Revolutionary war. America won the first one, but lost the second one.

Michelle on November 16, 2010 at 4:17 pm

“Sean R.” – you’re a “black guy???” really?

united states of sharia on November 16, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Of course Confederate flags are banned from public schools. After all public school students are forced to PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE to the Union flag, not the confederate flag, which is the point of why there is a pledge of allegiance in the first place. Why would any modern American school allow the losing side to display their flags?

col on November 16, 2010 at 5:21 pm

Your arguement is not only rediculous, it displays a complete lack of knowledge of American history, the current situations in our schools, and the US Constitution. You said, “Of course Confederate flags are banned from public schools” but that is completely untrue for the majority of schools in this country where no such ban exists. Then you said, “After all public school students are forced to PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE to the Union flag” but that is also untrue- most public schools today do not say the pleadge of allegence to any flag and they haven’t done so for many years- have you been living under a rock for 30 years? Then you asked,”Why would any modern American school allow the losing side to display their flags” again, I wonder if you have ever heard of the First Amendment? Where did you ever get the idea that the government has a right to ban the free speach of anyone based upon whether their point of view won or lost a war? Have you been in a school in Dearborn, Michigan or any of those in America’s southwest? If you had been, you will see the flags of Mexico and/or most Arab Nations everywhere and at one time or another they have all lost in a war against American interests.

Thinker on November 17, 2010 at 4:26 pm

during my recent year-long assignment in s. carolina and not having much interest in most things southern (native detroiter – current pacific northwesterner), i found myself pleased to see southerners’ proud displays of ginormous confederate flags mounted in the back of pick-up trucks.

the south is just too damn hot for me and i’m happy as can be to be back in the PNW, but i gotta hand it to the southerners for the dedication to their local (and national) heritage. it was refreshing. and i have a confederate flag magnet on my fridge here in seattle and if this mcdowell douchefag doesn’t like it, i’d be happy to punch him in his stupid face!

howardroark43 on November 16, 2010 at 5:28 pm

Southerners are the most patriotic and tradition-minded of Americans today.

The Civil War is long over. Yet liberals keep rehashing history.

To quote their favorite expression, its time to move on.

The South has fully embraced the Republican Party. Let’s hear it for American exceptionalism!

NormanF on November 16, 2010 at 5:50 pm

OK, I don’t mean to be confrontational, Debbie, and I agree with you wholeheartedly that a student should not be denied the right to a free public education simply because his religion does not agree with his teacher’s views.

However, what would you say to a student who declared that “Hitler did the right thing” or wore a Hezbollah T-shirt to class? BTW, you already discussed on your blog a case about college students who made and wore a T-shirt glorifying 9/11 and the destruction of the Twin Towers.

In your world, those students don’t have the right to free speech, right? And – yet – THEIR religion, as we all know, causes them to respect and admire the mass murder of American infidels.

So, you don’t really “support free speech in public schools.” You only support that speech with which you happen to agree. Well, Jay McDowell does the same thing.

Mike on November 16, 2010 at 7:21 pm

I really think it depended on the context of that kid’s statement of rejecting homosexuality because of his religion. If he said “G-d Hates Fags” or said bad things about a particular gay student, then he should’ve been thrown out of class. If that student doesn’t like gay people, that’s fine just as long as he doesn’t bully them.

Matthew on November 16, 2010 at 7:21 pm

BTW, I am Jewish and homosexuality, as you well know, is prohibited by Judaism.

However, I do not seek to impose my views on others and prohibit atheists, etc. from marrying someone of the same sex.

Anyone who wants to prohibit same-sex marriage in the whole country because HIS OWN religious views prohibit it, is no better than a Muslim who wants the whole world to submit to shariah and bow down to Allah.

While I am not an Orthodox Jew, there are certain things that I would never do. Homosexuality is one of them.

Having said that, I do not have a problem with others engaging in homosexual behavior or marrying someone of the same sex. Again, I would never seek to impose my own religious or moral views on someone else. Would you?

If yes, then you are no better than the sharia-preaching Muslims you so despise. Why is it that everyone must submit to YOUR views?

Debbie, you say that you are pro-life. Yes, abortions are prohibited by Jewish law [except when necessary to save a life, in which case they become mandatory – since Judaism puts life above faith, unlike a certain religion of (rest in) peace that takes innocent lives in the name of faith.]

However, why do you seek to impose your religious views on others? Would you object to an atheist woman having an abortion simply because it is against Jewish law?

You said at one point that when it comes to analyzing laws, you don’t cite the Torah. You cite the US Constitution. But the US Constitution encourages freedom and liberty to all people, regardless of their faith or lack thereof. How dare you seek to prevent people from doing lawful things – like getting abortions or marrying someone of the same sex – simply because YOU are not allowed to do these things?

I would hate for the world to have to submit to Shariah law, but I would hate it just as much if we all bowed down to Schlussel. Yes, Jews aren’t allowed to marry gays. But why oppose gay marriage among non-Jews? That’s my question – and I’ll be waiting for your answer.

Mike on November 16, 2010 at 7:50 pm

United States of Sharia, yes I am really african-american, check this out bro, whenever I’m on the telephone talking to anyone, the person on the phone think that I’m a white guy, because I speak good english (no I don’t speak so-called ebonics or rap music language). But when they see and meet me in person, they’re clearly mistaken on how I physically look like. Another thing, some folks think that I’m a liberal (I’m very conservative politically), because I’m clean-cut, I dress a little old fashion at times and I wear slack-pants with either a plaid collard shirt or a regular collard shirt, etc. But they don’t know what I’m thinking inside my mindset.

The Confederate flag is anti-American because the Southern Confederacy tried to destroy the Union and the South used the flag to oppose desegregation in the 50s and 60s.

Jewish law allows abortion in more cases than just for the life of the mother. Abortion is also allowed if conception took place outside of marriage like adultery.

Mr Karma on November 16, 2010 at 10:45 pm

Mr Karma,

Jewish law does not allow for abortion due to adultery or any other form of immorality.

In an ideal world teachers are supposed to be ‘neutral’ in their thoughts and opinions, just like the main stream media is(LOL!). If you are not going to allow the confederate flag then the rainbow flag should not have been allowed either. And by the way, purple shirts should be banned as well.

Clay Boggess on November 17, 2010 at 7:59 am

The civil war was fought by the South to EXPAND slavery by violence. They could expand it by legislation, so they went to war to expand it. It’s really that simple.

Don’t believe me? Read the Southern ULtimatums — war ultimatums, by the SOuthern leadership in Montgomery in March of 1861. This was the same group of me who just wrote the Confederate Constitution and appointed the President, VP, and Cabinet. They were literally the founding fathers of the CSA.

What was their first action? TO issue war ultimatums to the North.

What were all five ultimatums about?

Slavery — that slavery must be SPREAD to Kansas and the territories.

Go see their ultimatums. SOuthern newspapers reported these ultimatums joyously — Richmond newspapers headlines were “THE TRUE ISSUE”

All five ultimatums were about ONE thing — the spread of slavery.

Kansas had just kicked out the thugs and terrorist sent by the SOuthern states, in a three year war. Then the people of Kansas voted 98% to 2% to keep slavery out forever.

Which makes the Ultimatums by the South so insane. The ultimatums were that the NORTH would have to force slavery into Kansas — and not just force it down the people’s throats violently, but slavery must be “respected” by the people there.

Very Nazi like.

If you never heard of the SOuthern Ultimatums to spread slavery, it’s because the SOuth knows that kind of thing shows what violent thugs the Southern leaders were, and how the spread of slavery is what they were all about.

http://deathofsoutherngod.blogspot.com/

Go learn some real history — as your OWN southern leaders bragged about it, in your OWN official documents, what the South said and did AT THE TIME.

Not the pure HS you made up later.

First, thank you Debbie for always telling it like it is. The problem in our country is that the majority are letting a minotity run us over using political correctness and fear to keep us in line. If I don’t like something there isn’t anyone in this world who is going to make me like it. And if that offends them, too bad! I don’t care. No one is going to make me change or alter my principles just so they can feel good. We need more people to do the same without fear. A la Debbie. There isn’t a right not to be offended….yet.

Santiago Perez on June 15, 2011 at 10:15 am

Mark Douglas, are you related to “John Brown”? Your statements certainly indicate a relationship. You need to look at some history sources, rather than blogs. My great-grandfather freed his slaves in North Carolina before he enlisted in the ranks lead by “Stonewall” Jackson. Most of the Confederates were not slaveholders, and were fighting for separation, not the overthrow of the Union. Their desire was separation from the Union to live their lives as they wished. No different from the Colonies fighting for separation from England. The South was not industrial, and imported much of the equipment and other goods that they did not produce. The U.S. put heavy protective tariffs on imports to protect Northern industry, which still was not producing goods, on a large part, inferior to what was available in Europe. Tariffs paid by the South were a very large part of the U.S. Government income, that Lincoln did not want to lose.
