9/11: Five Years Later, Better or Worse? Ask Guy Gabaldon

By
When Ronald Reagan ran for President against Jimmy Carter in 1980, one simple question was the focal point of his campaign:

Are you better off today than you were four years ago?

Five years after 9/11, Reagan’s campaign question is a good template for the war on terror. On Monday, we should ask ourselves: Are we better off today than we were five years ago today?
The answer is no.

Guy Gabaldon: World War II Hero Would Be Vilified Now

Those who hate us are in our midst, and lax immigration laws have made their entry easier. Politically correct federal law enforcement officials, civil rights proponents, and judges have all made “sensitivity” to certain ethnicities the priority over security for all Americans. Those who share the same ideology, the same religious fervor, as the 9/11 hijackers are promoted as “peaceful” in Hollywood, in Washington, and every other center of influence.
Just looking back five years ago isn’t enough. Looking back at the last great world war, World War II, and comparing it to this– World War III against Islamofascists–the answer is still no. We are not better off than we were even decades ago when we fought the the first Nazis.
A good benchmark for that is the life of Guy Gabaldon. A World War II hero, he died last week at the age of 80. Gabaldon’s amazing feat in getting more than 1,000 Japanese soldiers to surrender was celebrated in movies and on TV.
But today, he’d probably be excoriated by the New York Times, the ACLU, and Chris Matthews. He’d be lambasted in Jay Leno monologues and obnoxious Jon Stewart soliloqies.
Just an 18-year-old Marine, Gabaldon persuaded the Japanese soldiers to surrender in the Battle for Saipan. He didn’t just shake his finger at them and say: If you don’t listen, I’ll get Kofi Annan to write a letter.
Gabaldon used brazen trickery and an elementary knowledge of Japanese. He bribed them with cigarettes and candy. He warned them, making up stories about encampments surrounded by U.S. troops. He coerced Japanese soldiers into abandoning their posts and surrendering.
Gabaldon’s scheme was so successful, he won the Navy Cross, the Marines’ highest honor. His story was told on the small screen in “This is Your Life” and on the silver screen, in the 1960 movie, “Hell to Eternity.”
But today, were he fighting the war on terror, Gabaldon would not be celebrated as the “Pied Piper of Saipan.” He would be vilified and likely court-martialed the way soldier Ilario Pantano was. His ethics and integrity would be challenged by MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. He’d likely be accused of violating the new Pentagon rules banning “abusive” treatment and interrogation of prisoners.
The 1,000 soldiers, whose surrender Gabaldon secured, would quickly get ACLU lawyers and gourmet meals according to their strictest Japanese diet requirements, a la Guantanamo Bay prisoners. Sean Penn might even go to visit them. And George Soros would fund websites supporting them and attacking the Allies.
Today, it’s questionable whether Guy Gabaldon would be regarded as a hero in America. But it’s certain his heroic efforts would be hotly debated and dragged through the mud over and over again.
This is the post-9/11 way. But is it really “Post”-9/11? We are not better off then we were five years ago on 9/11.
Today, we are promoting those from the same religion as the 9/11 hijackers on game shows, like this season’s “The Amazing Race.” Can you imagine putting members of the German American Bund on “Quiz Show”? It would have been unthinkable then.
But five years after 9/11, the unthinkable is not just Reality TV. It is reality.
During Guy Gabaldon’s time, the American mindset was shaped by the likes of Bob Hope and Superman promoting war bonds. Today, it is shaped by Oprah, who refused to visit young girls at schools in Afghanistan when asked by the President.
Yesterday, movies promoted our World War II efforts against the Nazis. Today, billionaire movie-makers, like Mark Cuban, make movies like “The War Within,” sympathizing with terrorists and siding against those fighting them. Yesterday, movies with Nazis as villains got Oscar nominations. But in 2006, a movie celebrating Palestinian terrorist homicide bombers, “Paradise Now,” got that nod.
During World War II, every effort was made to conserve supplies, funds, and resources to fight the war effort. Today, the Department of Homeland Security won’t spend adequate funds to update and unify an archaic set of terrorist databases for visa background checks. But DHS chief Michael Chertoff spends thousands in dollars on Daniel Sutherland, a high-ranking DHS employee whose sole purpose is to fly around the country consoling the most extremist Muslims who openly support HAMAS and Hezbollah.
Yesterday, our Justice Department hunted Nazi War criminals and prosecuted them. Today, there is no similar Office of Special Investigations to hunt Islamic terrorists. On the contrary, today, key Justice Department officials, like U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy III in Detroit, sit on indictments of Islamic terrorists, until they flee the country and visit mosques to gush over extremist imams who incite those terrorists. And Presidents, like George W. Bush, reward efforts like Murphy’s with appointments to the Federal Bench.
Judges, like Gerald Rosen, don’t have the guts to uphold jury verdicts against Al-Qaeda terror cells. And Federal Magistrates, like Charles Binder, don’t have the guts to make Islamic men who illegally alter cellphones–for untraceable, unlimited use and marked for shipment to Lebanon–to stand trial.
Are we better off than we were five years ago? The answer is still no. And it’s getting worse.

Regarding the “proposed” declaration; remove the words “radical” and “moderate”.
If we had to fight WWII as we exist today, we’d lose.

Great column Debbie unfortunately I dont’ think the US will change its tune about realistically fighting terrorism until one of our major cities lies in ruins.

I’m glad you mentioned Jay Leno. He has vicious “jokes” regarding conservatives every night. Most are against GW Bush. Leno will do a joke about William Jefferson (not mentioning that he is a democrat) and make fun of the “republican congress” or “republican Denny Hastert”. His usual democrat joke is about Bill Clinton’s sexual prowess/promiscuity.

In October of 2001, a few weeks after the Islamic 9/11 attacks on America, Franklin Graham of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, (BGEA) was asked in an interview to comment on Islam by an NBC reporter. Graham said that Islam is wicked, violent and not of the same god (as professed by Judaism and Christianity).
He went on to say that; “I don’t believe this is a wonderful, peaceful religion. When you read the Koran and you read the verses from the Koran, it instructs the killing of the infidel, for those that are non-Muslim.”
He also said, ìIt wasn’t Methodists flying into those buildings, it wasn’t Lutherans. It was an attack on this country by people of the Islamic faith.”
Of course, he was roundly attacked because of what he said, even though he spoke the truth. Politically correct minded sycophants i.e., Michael Chertoff, Robert Mueller, and many elected politicians and military leaders will end up causing the death and destruction of innocent people because of the restraints imposed upon the real war fighters in our military and the dedicated intelligence agents in the field.
No, I donít feel safer than five years ago, and we are not better off.

The answer to your question is no and things are going to get much worse. The SICK thing about all of this is that we are doing it to ourselves. That is, because of the PC brainwashing that we’re exposed to daily, because of our lack of solidarity and unity as a people, because of our self induced psychosis that all people are the same and must be treated as such, and on and on, things are going to get worse.
I showed in another recent thread how leaders of CAIR have influenced the FBI’s methods of dealing with crime, how FBI, ICE, and DHS supervisors and agents MUST now undergo Muslim sensitivity training — often taught by Muslims from CAIR itself and how Muslims have assured themselves a protected status much like an “oppressed” minority in this country. I showed how the EXACT same patterns of operation are and were used in Europe with overwhelming success.
But we never learn. We’re too afraid of offending anyone. We want everyone to feel they are a part of us. We can’t even say no to all kinds of deviant behavior that was once flat out illegal in this country.
And so we slide down the slope of our destruction as a people and a nation. The U.S. has become a whore to be raped by anyone who can reach her shores. Open to the highest bidder. Willing to let its own people suffer for the almighty dollar. Just ask Miller Brewing Co. and others. This whore called the U.S. can now be conquered by money, no bullets needed. How long will it take for the IslamoJihads to figure that out? I think they already have.
So enjoy the ride, it’s going to be very interesting.

British historian Arnold Toynbee observed that “civilizations die by suicide, not by murder”. Kinda looks like what’s going on here in the West.

What the? on September 7, 2006 at 1:28 pm

“everyone” didnt wake up all of the sudden in wwII either. don’t kid yourself. fdr lat eastern europe fall to the russians and left wake island and hawaii out there for the enemy just so he could make the british feel bad for having goals of empire. we didnt get into the war until the russians and germans had kicked the hell out of each other for years. and when we finally walked in and started to fight, we did it with crappy little tanks and proppelor driven planes that wouldve been wiped from the sky if the national socialists had decided to use the swallow as a fighter instead of a bomber.
America is a lucky country and has been taught the lie over and over that it is somehow superior to every other because we what?, won?
Get real folks. the only way we’re going to fight marxist class war is by pitting them against each other again, if we can.
National Socialist Germans were white and therefore not communist. Arabs and Venezualans and Mexicans and Chinese are not so they get a pass and an apple from the brainwashed leftists.
Everyone is more concerned with social acceptability more than their own lives and thats just pure satanism. Make your peace with God and get ready for watching the rolling dice again.I just love the look on the reds’ faces when I inform them that I am not even in the slightest bit concerned with their acceptance or sympathy. They are defenseless to that, but in politics you have to get these blobs to vote for you or you have to kill them. Heil Liberals!!

playertwo on September 7, 2006 at 4:03 pm

Guy Gabaldon became a hero because liberalism wasn’t strong enough to destroy him. Furthermore, he was fighting the Japanese, not the Russian Communists. Had he been fighting the Communists, every leftist would have crawled out from under their rock to attack him. He would have died in prison in disgrace.
We won the war because a Democrat was in the White House. If a Republican had tried to fight the Axis Powers, then every anti-American leftist (sorry for the redundancy) would have tried to undermine the war effort. Hollywood would have refused to sell war bonds.
I saw a documentary on the McCarthy era blacklisting of black actors. They deserved what they got. THEY EMBRACED THE SOVIET UNION AND DID NOT RENOUNCE THOSE WHO DID. In other words, they embraced their country’s enemies and would not give their country any loyalty at all. They did so because they naively believed that the USSR was egalitarian. No doubt some had more sinister motives.
Those were the days? At least we survived WWII to fight in Korea and Viet Nam. In Viet Nam, the left could not contain their hatred for this country. They openly against our efforts.
Nothing’s new. The left is up to their same old dirty tricks. If our nation is to survive, we must destroy the left, then we will be free to destroy Islamofascism.
