Can’t Afford College? Pretend You’re Iraqi

By Debbie Schlussel

When I read, the other day, that the Obama and Bush Administrations spent over $50 million in U.S. taxpayer dollars to  “clean up hazardous waste” in Iraq, I thought that was bad enough.  After all, that money could be better spent cleaning up waste here, including the oil spill in the Gulf.

welfarestateiraq

But it gets worse.  If you can’t afford to send your kid to college, too bad.  You’re sending some Iraqi’s kid to college.

The Obama U.S. State Department is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to send at least 400 Iraqi students to college, beginning this summer.  The State Department awarded grants to the Academy for Educational Development, which is funding the college education and all expenses for these Iraqis in America and 200 more Iraqis in Great Britain.  The money will also go to develop something called the Iraq Higher Education Advising Network and help Iraq to eventually send 10,000 Iraqi students to study abroad, all expenses paid.  And don’t be surprised if Americans are ultimately stuck with the bill for the entire 10,000.

This is ridiculous.  We didn’t destroy Iraq as a country.  The nation has its own colleges, collects its own taxes, and charges us and everyone else money for its oil.  The Iraqis should be footing the bill to send their kids to college, whether it’s there or here.  There is absolutely no reason we should be doing this.

When will we stop paying for Iraq infrastructure, welfare, and everything else?  The time must come for us to walk away and make a clean break.  We made a mistake going in  because we handed the country to Iranian-allied Shi’ites.  Let Iran pay for the country’s welfare.  And let the country learn to spend its own funds from oil, taxes, and everything else in prudent ways.

It is not the U.S. taxpayers’ responsibility to put Iraqi kids through college on U.S. soil when most U.S. taxpayers cannot afford to put their own American citizen kids through college on U.S. soil.

Enough is enough.  When does it end?  America has a big enough welfare state.  Why must we have an auxiliary welfare state in the Middle East?

Reader Steve writes:

The story and the comments that follow speak for themselves. We are paying to educate Iraqis as if we don’t need to educate our fellow Americans and train them for jobs. It’s always America second, anybody else first with our insane government.

Love your work Debbie. I want to encourage you to hang in there at all times, thousands of people love you and appreciate you.

Thanks, Steve. And right on. We need to take care of America, first and always.

Back in 97 or so, I attended evening classes at a Lutheran University. Two young men from Kuwait were in one of my classes and the thing I remember most about them was that each of them said their government was paying for them to come here and go to school. Their tuition, room and board, etc. was being paid for because there was so much oil money. If that was the case (and admittedly, I don’t know if what they said was true), then why would we have to pay for Iraqis to go to college? Contrary to what liberals may think, they still have their oil.

great, I agree they should cut those aid , and they should cut the 3 billion USD/annually to Israel too !!

joe on June 21, 2010 at 5:08 pm

    Joe,

Israel provides support services infrastructure and intelligence data worth more than 3 billion a year. Also, Joe, Israel is a nuclear superpower. You want no say in how they choose to use that power?

We spend much more to defend France and Germany, and, in addition, we risk our own citizens’lives.

“When will we stop paying for Iraq infrastructure, welfare, and everything else?”
When Iraq’s infrastructure, almost completely destroyed by an illegal US-led war as you ought to remember, is significantly developed. You don’t invade, occupy and ride roughshod over a people and refuse to pick up the tab because things haven gone the way you planned (poorly).
But then this conclusion requires you to apply reason and a sense of right and wrong, too much of an ask I suppose.

“Halima,” sweetheart, you are quite wrong in the following:

“You don’t invade, occupy and ride roughshod over a people and refuse to pick up the tab because things haven gone the way you planned (poorly).”

The reason the US needed to attack Iraq is because it was a troublesome Muslim state that was moving to become more capable of causing trouble. Bush operated on the theory that if the US brought democracy, Iraqis would grab for it, and we’d get an ally. Since the Iraqis are Muslim first, they do not like democracy, and things have not gone as planned. Alas, that also means that the US shouldn’t be funding Iraq as if the Iraqis had become human beings. Why fund the education of vicious animals?

There are consequences for a country thumbing its nose at a tougher country. One is that the weaker country loses land, people, resources, and so on. Next time, I hope the US kills a few million Bnei Amalek from the air.

I’d gladly pay extra taxes to pay to nuke Iraq and all other muslim countries *after* we deport all muslims from western countries.

Kudos… Debbie. Let’s hear what Hamas Pat has to say about supporting Iraqi kids on our dime. I think its wrong and we shouldn’t be in the nation-building business even IF Iraq was a friendly country. They should support their own citizens. That’s not our obligation.

And who knows who these ‘students’ will be? Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if some terrorists filtered in, just like with illegal aliens in general, terrorists edge their way in with the crowd. If these Iraqi students are monitored the way Homeland Security monitors terrorists in general, the problem is much greater than moochers getting college education at the expense of real Americans. This is likely to foster more terrorists incidents.

I wonder what they’ll be “studying.” (That imbecilic would-be Times Square bomber was said to have had an “engineering degree” from some U.S. “college.” that really makes me wonder. The equivalent of high-school dropouts are now running around with utterly worthless “advanced” degrees. Enough with getting all and sundry idiots “credentials” — the Iraqis would probably be better off learning a skilled trade — in their own country.)

Another excellent post, Debbie.

I agree that since from the Iraqi point of view we liberated them from Saddam Hussein and his Baath party rule, that if anything, they should be paying us money/grants; not us paying them.

I also second what Steve wrote above.

JeffE on June 21, 2010 at 9:33 pm

how many of these “kids” are just going to disappear in to the American abyss? Just as those army trainees just disappeared.

Guess they will pop up somewhere.

ender on June 21, 2010 at 10:18 pm

ender, I’m guessing the comment “they will “pop” up somewhere” has a double meaning.

Why in hell isn’t this story anywhere else in the conservative blogosphere?
Hardly a day goes by that Debbie has a story that nobody else covers. (Thank G_d she’s here)
Would the conservative movement in America please get their act together.
If somebody else has seen this story, other than the original source quoted in the story, please put up a link.
It seems to me too much of what is currently labeled “conservative’ has degraded to idiots talking about nothing and attaching other conservatives.

Wow, what a lot of superficial, short-sighted ignorance.

As someone who travels back and forth to Iraq very regularly, I can tell you that the above assumptions are almost wholly inaccurate – and very counter-productive.

Educating 400 Iraqis and introducing them to your culture, your way of life, your values (well, excepting the above) is a means of ensuring your future, not undermining it.

As for ‘Muslims not liking democracy’, well, again, that’s spoken by someone who neither knows, nor cares to know the truth. As far as Iraqis are concerned, in March 2010, they went out to vote, despite threats by al Qaeda, despite explosions, despite everything… As a bunch freedom loving democrats (small ‘D’), would you have the same courage and devotion to the political process? I wonder…

I work with a lot of very decent, very well-educated Iraqis, many whom are now extremely proud to call themselves US citizens. While you lot are sitting here propogating this uninformed nonesense, they’re doing something positive. I really hope they don’t come across this page, they’d be as disappointed as I am.

One thing I do agree on though, there’s a few Americans here that would benefit from the education that prompted this discussion…

this is terrible. the Obama administration will never spend one dime on education in the US, but they are paying for all the Iraqis to go to school? How can we let them get away with such an injustice!!! And why do they spend so many countless millions to clean up “hazardous waste” in Iraq? What hazardous waste is there anyway? This is just another socialist lie. We are FIGHTING A WAR in Iraq. it is absolutely unthinkable that we are spending MORE on cleaning up nonexistent waste in Iraq than on fighting the war there, but it’s true. No wonder this country is going broke.

Seriously? Are you living on Mars? It seems so.
why not talk about the billions or better trillions that the US is making in Iraq, and will continue to do so for a long time in the future (Iraq was made to sign an agreement a few years ago, which its terms were not even fully revealed to government officials, yet they were expected to sign it.) So ultimately, these “expenses” for Americans, are fully recovered with Iraqi money. Here’s a tip for you, go and take research 101.
